The more I study from other designers and artists on youtube, the more I'm realizing that college mostly only taught me how to use the tools (very slow, much expense), and hardly anything about designing for success. I've also come across many tutorial videos and webinars that made me regret college altogether as I could have saved so much time and money. My degree didn't get me any full time jobs, but my learned skills brought most of my clients to me by word of mouth, most returning for more, with very little networking effort (but to viewers, DO network!). My life advice would be to skip college altogether and go straight to the online mentors, where you won't be put into a lifetime of debt for a degree that will mostly be ignored. It is my personal opinion that if you've developed your skills well enough, your work should speak for itself. *This is only my perspective based on my own life experience, and is not intended to be in any way offensive, but to contribute to discussion.
Jen, Thanks for you POV. I agree about the fact that formal design education is sorely lacking in the real-world graphic business skills building department. That is one reason why I am doing what I am doing here on YT.Sharing all the stuff I learned AFTER I got out of school - the really important stuff that you need to survive and succeed. The one thing you didn't mention though it that school does teach you aesthetics - and that is very hard to teach online. You can also really notice it when someone has not had a formal education when it comes to composition specifically. I know lots of folks who know the tools, but don't have the aesthetic.
There are definitely those who know the tools and don't have aesthetic, I agree. Perhaps it's just my college that was really underwhelming, but they didn't teach me much about composition, and definitely didn't teach me anything about using the golden ratio or the purpose of overshooting in typography (those are just a few things I'm learning on youtube currently). That's sort of what I meant by designing for success, as aesthetic is vitally important.
Jen, you are going about it in the right way! Assessing what you are missing and going after it with continued self-directed learning! Congrats and never stop!
I thank you more than you deserve. Learning to design is really a lifetime journey. You really can't escape the basics, start from scratch and you will surely get there.
Many of these lessons really go beyond design--as someone who's coming into design from a software engineering perspective, the ideas of learning the history of one's field, learning the fundamentals (first principles), and life-long learning, in general, are so, so important. Many thanks for the video!
Hi Phillip, I am an architect, in learning. And have finally gathered the balls to start my own. Just wanted to express that your videos have given me a lot of direction on how to go about the sector that I didn't know anything about while I was at college or at the design offices I was working for all this while. Many thanks, and keep up the good work.
I appreciate your channel so much! As a graphic designer, it's difficult to find quality advice and new tips from an experienced graphic designer. So, thank you again and keep 'em coming! ❤️
Terricia, You're very welcome. Be sure to check out the other videos in my catalog. There's tons of great stuff there! Glad to have you as a subscriber...you did sub right?
Madhukar! I'm so glad you keyed-in on this one point! It is a really important one. Do what you think is right that will make an impact. You will be respected for your take-charge initiative. And VERY rarely will you have to ask for forgiveness, I promise you!
I am currently attending a community college right now and I just figured out that graphic design is the route I would like to take. I am planning on getting an internship after completing my portfolio then starting my career in graphic design right after I get my associates degree. I have looked at many RUclips videos to help me learn some good tips on it but yours stood out to me in many ways. Thank you so much for making this and keep up the good work!

Thanks for your observation and personal insight on your vast subject. The key factor to be a good designer is "Take it and Make it simple" You are an amazing mantor. Good designer must develop these qualities - 1- Observer 2- Develop Prespavtives 3- Good communicator
It's good to re-watch this video. I find the most important thing out of all that is to listen to feedback and don't take it negatively. I used to do that and it's only been the last year where I really have gone "hang on a minute, just listen, accept and create something even better". It can' t get any worse and you find yourself realising that it can make a huge difference not just for your own work but how your business runs. This should go with any type of business, even Gordon Ramsey is always obsessed by feedback and taking on board criticism as he just wants to make the experience even better for the customer.
Stuart - you have unlocked one of the hardest things for creatives to leverage - the ability to really hear criticism - and translate it into motivation to move to even higher levels of achievement - rather than chafing at it...It's a real sign of creative maturity!
