  • After an early wreck, the Daytona 500 was plagued with drivers riding around at half throttle trying to save fuel as a strategy play heading into the end of the first stage. The real talk of the night though came when William Byron and Alex Bowman were neck and neck coming to the line as a caution came out and the white flag flew.
Is there anything to fix about Monday's race? Dale Jr. gives his take on it and explains that the strategy and cautions are sometimes just the way things go down.

Was it reasonable, on the second to last lap, to potentially allow two wrecked cars to sit in the grass as the rest of the field took the checkered flag? Yes. Stage cautions need to go, but stage points are pretty cool in my book.

In general, not referring to Sunday's race. Why on earth can't they race back to the line on the final lap? I understand throwing the caution heading into turn 1 on the final lap, because the wreck happened at the start finish line BUT. With how big Daytona and Talladega are, why can't they race back when they get half way down the back stretch and a wreck happens? The next lap will be the cool down lap anyway. Perfect example, 2001 EA Sports 500. Big Wreck happens, Bobby Labonte flips over, and they raced back. Once Dale Jr crossed the start finish line the wreck was still quite a ways ahead of him on the cool down lap. His spotter even said to be very cautious about the wreck on the back stretch. There should be a line or an area on the back stretch that once it's crossed, they race back. Especially at the big tracks.

The only way to legislate the fuel saving strategy out of the current speedway product is to bolt on the softest set of rubber Goodyear can bring.
If they have to change tires every 30-40 laps, there is no advantage to saving fuel to create the shortest possible last pit stop.

So who gets to race to that line? Just the leaders? So if the second and third place cars wreck at the starting line, do we want the rest of the field going 190 mph around them trying to race to the back stretch? If that’s the case then why not just have them race all the way back and forget about safety? Seems like the way they did it for years was as good as any. If it’s a 500 mile race, whoever leads at 500 miles wins. If it’s under caution it’s still the rightful winner.

That's what bothers me is how why can it not be we are going to let them race back to the checkered flag because after all it is the last lap. If the crash is bad enough then obviously throw the caution, I think if you add it up the last 20 years they throw the caution too much at the end of the day, how many times does somebody simply just spin out and they throw the caution

That photo Nascar come out with is not even a good angle to tell who’s in the lead and doesn’t show if that is a light or not for all anyone knows that’s a trash can. The lights on top of the flag stand wasn’t even yellow in that picture. Go watch Bowman’s in car camera and you can definitely tell has already passed Byron when the yellow light appears. Promotes being up front throughout the race (instead of just the last 5-10 laps of a stage) and gets rid of the fuel mileage games due to stage cautions. Average running position is easy to compute with electronic scoring and should be pretty easy for fans to understand.

I'll tell you how to fix plate races if you want complete race competition. Stop stages and give points out by the AVERAGE position that you held for the entire race. With today's computerized scoring it's not hard to calculate. Still give 5 extra points for the winner and 3 for most laps led. If you ride around in the rear but charge to the front late you will get backmarker points because that is where you were for the most part. If you run top ten all day but blow a motor or wreck with two laps to go you still get good points and aren't penalized because you finished in the rear or got a DNF. It also doesn't overly reward fuel mileage finishes or penalize people who ran up front all day but ran out of fuel with 1 to go. Sure, there are possibilities for ties and what not but it will keep everyone up on the wheel the entire time. The drawback is of course that they probably will wreck the entire field by lap 20 but it saves watching a parade and then getting the wreck after 3 hours anyway. It gives everyone a chance to go do their yardwork...
