Thank you! Everyone I know starts out completely "free." Tried that and spent the entire afternoon running around a huge paddock with little results haha. This makes a lot more sense as a transition to free work based on how my horses has worked thus far :)
haha oh wow yes that sounds very familiar... i know how you feel!! Oh yay I'm glad! Yeah it took a while to sus it out but I've found this to be a much easier way for both you and the horse haha
When they start compleatly free their probebly using the join-up method. Witch in my mind is more effectiv bc then the horse choses to be with you. But with the method in the video it can be that the horse thinks that it’s a leadrope there when it isen’t. And then the horse can leav easier. But with join-up the horse will never leav your side.
I admire people like you because I personally struggle with liberty. Although I have been moving around horses for a long time I always get nervous and my heart rate speeds up when I try to lead the horse with my body, not the rope. I am happy to find your videos and I hope it will help me. :) Thank you
Thank you so much for this! I'll be getting myself a horse soon, and this video has been showing the most effective form of basics I've seen so far. I myself am still learning how to teach a horse liberty myself, and I like the way you do it much more than a few other videos I've seen.
A friend of mine and I are starting our colts out on liberty for the first time to try and make a better connection on the ground with them (hopefully it will transfer to the saddle when they are of age) this video was perfect! Covered the basics of what we need as a foundation without being super long or confusing! LOVE IT! THANKS
This was so helpful for me! I'm currently working with a 9 year old, 17hh Percheron mare, and she's VERY pushy, and a little nervous. I have wanted to try some liberty with her to see if more release of pressure helps her to trust more. So glad I found this video!!!
You are an outstanding equestrian and a great teacher. Thank you for sharing your wisdom clearly and succinctly. I hope to put what I have learned into practice one day. I long for a friendship with a horse. Aloha to all from Kauai.
Just the video I was looking for! Love the way you taught the horse with simple exercises. I have been browsing through RUclips trying to teach my horse to follow me, but all I get is people using treats. I love your video and how you are growing a stronger bond with Monty! (Think that’s you spells it’s name) 😅❤️❤️💕💙
Thank you for this video! Can't wait to watch more on learning how to do liberty with my mare. Some of the videos I've watched on RUclips are very heavy on the treat giving, and that isn't working for me right now, as when I do that, my mare just stays glued to me and my treat pouch (yes, she's a foodie!). I can't wait to try some of this and learn more! Any tips and advice would be most welcome.
OMG this was perfect within not even half an hour my horse was doing this and I even look off the lead rope and he did it perfectly (he is a thoroughbred) I also tried it with my other horse she wasn't too good at it but she was still doing it going to keep training her with ur tricks as it worked for my thoroughbred (my other horse is a Standardbred) thank u so much telling all my friends about u
thank you thank you thank you. I've been wanting to do liberty for ages but never knew how to start. my horse is currently being spelled due to an injury on her whither. so this is a great exercise for us. thank you. can't wait to see next video.
Aww thats great! Most people want to learn hut just simply dont know where to start! im so glad this helped you! Yes this is great excerise if your horse is out of work. i actually started liberty after I had reconstructive knee surgery and couldnt ride haha. Its a lot of fun
The poor horse in the background was like I want to be in the video too! I wanna be famous!! Teach me! Teach me! and just gives up cause it was ignored. XD
I am glad she doesn't use treats. It show that the horse understands that she is the leader of the 'herd'. They have a mutually respectful relationship. You do not need treats to accomplish that.
I did it yesterday without a whip or anything 😂 And Ziggy has never done liberty before, but this is a great video for horses that don’t understand the point! 😄 My next lesson will be liberty, which is awesome! When my instructor saw Ziggy following me without me holding him or anything, she looked amazed, and said that maybe liberty is what we should do 😂 I want to teach Ziggy to kneel down so I can get on and then he can stand up, but thats a looong way away 😂
Amazing job for a young girl very refreshing keep up the the informative work to teach other equines that patience ,time, knowledge gets you where you need to be with your mate.🖒
I loved this video, I tried it with my horse and it worked so well! Could you make another video on some more liberty work to try after you can do these exercises? I would love to learn more!
That was a really well made video. Very clear and simple thanks I can't wait to try it! My pony is very hot and doesn't really like people on her back so I thought to try this as she is smart and likes to be worked somehow. Thanks so much :)
I have done Liberty work before with my pony. I am also teaching her to bow, but I think I will try doing liberty your way because it's a lot of just ok yeah follow you and do I have too with my pony so thank you for this video! :)
I really like your way to teach your horse. I do some liberty work with my horse but I think I wasn't that clear in what I want so he didn't understand sometimes. I will try your way cause I think that could work really well. What I would like to ask, my horse is a little pushy sometimes and when I walk beside him especially when I pick up speed he starts biting in my direction. It's not an aggressive or mean way of biting, more playful. It was very bad in the beginning, it's a lot better already but it seams he just can't let it be. Can you give me some advice?
Tina Binder when he bites or does something you don’t want him to starting at his shoulders do a half moon shape towards his rump he should turn his rump when the hind leg closest to you crosses over the hind leg futher away from you stop and continue this helped a lot with the horse I ride Nova
My horse is the same way, I have only tried this method out one time, but he was kind of pinning his ears and getting a little mad, which makes me wonder if he doesnt enjoy it or?
Hi Ellie! I have ran into your channel and Im so glad i did! With no help at all I have trained my horse, Whisper, how to follow me with the rope around his neck at a trot and a walk. I can tell him to stand, and he will stand while I go into the barn or wherever. Though he doesn't fully respect me. I want to start liberty circles with him but i know for a fact he won't follow me. Any suggestions on how to get him to fully respect me?
Thank you for the video it has been really helpful! I have a mini Shetland who I would love to do Liberty with however I can't really see her doing it as if I let go of the leadrope she would just walk away or eat grass and ignore what I'm asking at the minute. I'll try your way and hopefully that might make some difference
I definitely want to try this, I understand it might take a while as although my horse is smart she's very wilful at times, she's always struck me as having the ability to do this but because /I'm/ not clear on how to teach her then she can't show me she can do it, I'd like to teach her to lie down as well starting with the bow, think I'll start this tomorrow and see how far I can get.
Idk if this Is oki to do but me and my horse are sport horse champion and so all I did was when we were practicing I was giving her commands (Note: my horse is an Arabian) when we picked up a trot I uncliped the rope carefully and that's how I learned. So ya :) but great vid!!
To stop my horse when he's following me I usually just stop if I'm in front of him or if I'm beside him I put my hand in front of his chest and ask him to halt. I really like your way though, it's like your just leading them minus the rope. It's more familiar to people. Idk where this comment was going or what it was pointing out. 'Tired me is dumb me' :D
I try to do this with my horse but she just walks away from me when I don’t use halter. However when I have the lead rope in my hands I don’t put any pressure but she follows perfectly. How can I fix this?
Joely Y whenever she walk away grad her lead rope and walk in a half moon shape towards her rump she should turn her rump if she crosses her back leg over the front of her other back leg when she does stop by doing this it’s turning a horses engine of off the horse I ride Nova used to walk off when I went at a trot still does sometimes that’s why I take it really slow now this really helped I hope it will help you
Joely Y I have a mare who does this too. What I did was keep applying pressure to her hip. If she walked off, i swung my leadrope towards her hip and made her turn and face me. This took a while, and I'd recommend using the whip rather than the leadrope as you can keep more of a distance and remove the chance of being kicked. Just keep applying pressure and as soon as they stop walking, release the pressure, turn away and walk away. Repeat this and eventually the horse will learn :)
Does anyone have any tips for encouraging your horse to go faster while their following you? My horse will follow me at the walk but I have to put so much pressure on her to get her to trot. Any suggestions?
My horse used to do this but I started running with him and a lead so that he knew that when I gave a tug on the rope it meant to speed up and it worked
hey! what about horse who loves grass? my horse, medicine, i want to try liberty work him. Ever since ive watched heartland ive wanted to do liberty work. we certainly dont have a dirt arena and i cant do it in his stable. i do know that this was long ago but... yeah
woow i was searching for someone who knows liberty on my barn but i didn't found no one. And I found this video😍 Thanks and when are ypu going to upload the video you sayd???😏
my horse learned liberty by herself. it was actually really weird lmao I was putting her tack on and after I took her bridle off I accidentally swung the brush (im a butterfingers LMAO) and it fell in the arena. I knew she wouldn't run off so I went to grab it and she followed me. I walked back to the trailer and she still followed me so after my ride I went to the pasture with her as always and gave her some treats, I put the treats back at the trailer and came back and asked her to follow me and she did then I started running around and she followed me, soon it became a habit to where if I didnt have to I wouldn't even use a halter unless I was at a barrel race or in public because she wouldn't even try to go anywhere. she would run all over with me without a halter.it was rly strange to me and she was the best horse I ever had but sadly she passed away last march. and the terrible thing is was that she was killed by my psychotic father. glad hes out of my life which he of course completely ruined...and I haven't been able to find a horse that I have a bond with like I did with her. :/ but I try to stay strong even though I miss her everyday..
Hi The horses often had its ears back. How do you tell the difference between not being happy and what was happening there so I don’t misread their body language? Thx
My mare used to be abused, so i atarted doing this with her and it only took her 3 days to follow me around the feild, i can now lead her out of her paddock with out a halter, and were slowly working on hsr getting ridden
QUESTION ABOUT HORSE LIBIRTY! Okay so my mare tends to chase me around in the round pen. so i can run around and she trots after me. How do i know if she mad at me while following me or if she is following me as in libirty?
the pony that I want to start doing liberty with is very energetic and young, she barely gets ridden or exercised, so when I turn her in the paddock she starts running like a maniac. Should i let her run before doing it so she lets all her energy out or not?
My horse is gaited so whenever he trots beside me he goes fast but tries to stay beside me and ends up weirdly positioning himself. Either he just gets frustrated and leaves or runs really awkwardly with me should I maybe speed up or is he supposed to slow down?
jade amean just like how you asked your horse to walk on the lead rope with a whip at a walk do the same thing but at a trot and when it gets behind give some encouragement from behind with the whip and see how it goes then keep at it til your horse gets it down
My horse gets aggressive and doesn't listen to me. She's fine with the whip until I wave it around her face and the back end , Then she gets mad and kicks or threatens me and charge towards me. She's never kicked me or actually charged into me but no matter how hard I try I can't get her to trust me. She won't join up, she won't follow me, and when I ride her if she doesn't fell like jumping or working no she'll stop and won't go. Any advice
Possible get some professional training done to her? They have 30-60 day training programs for horses like that. I use to have a Clydesdale mare and she was the same way, we had 60 day training done to her and now she's a perfect, happy, sound, horse.
Adrianna Grigorov It's sounds like you have some underlying issues going on. If she is showing signs of aggression I wouldn't recommend trying to train her at Liberty until these problems are fixed. It's hard to help without actually seeing the horse but I would suggest stripping right down to basic ground work exercises. Get someone experienced to help you gain more respect from her. If I find I'm really stuck with something, asking for help from someone more experienced has always made such a difference! Try working with a trainer to see what the problem is. Sometimes horses can be moody or stubborn or just have off days like we do. But if she is being consistently aggressive then it's important to find out why before trying to work her at Liberty. Hope this helps! Xx
Brunette Beauty , thanks I will I gust need to find a good trainer. I started teaching her liberty and she is ok at it. She can do it with out a whip or a lead but she's to lazy to trot or canter with me😂
Yes, I have advice. You need to do the 'join up' technique correctly. Study the Monty Roberts video carefully. Note Monty's body positions, the degree of pressure applied and when, when to release some of the pressure. You must have the horse view you as the leader. You can not proceed with training and be effective until you do.
I have s horse that only walks behind me on a lead rein. I can never get him to line up with me He's also a slow, bit lazy, walker will it work with him?
I've tried to teach the gelding that I ride to respond to nothing but my seat with no reins, however he was gelded proud so he thinks he is a stallion (🤦🏼♀️😂) and he really doesn't respond. Any tips ?
True. No metal. Not needed. No bits or spurs or buckles or chains, if you respect your horse. Liberty is about mutual respect instead of fear or force or pain, which is unfortunately still the norm.
So I started training my lease horse awhile ago. He will come when I whistle but he won't trot up to me and takes for ever. Any tips on how to get him trotting up to me from far away? Also he is very respectful of the crop and when I try to teach him the Liberty circles he just runs away from me. Please help. + when I run and try to run with him he doesn't do anything but walk
Julia Ingram For the crop part, maybe try it without using a crop and just extend your arms? My pony is the same way with trotting. I would start trotting with the lead rope on first, then when the horse gets the idea of trotting with you, take it off. Just some suggestions
What could I do because my horse is terrified to go next to whips, I got her from a school so the others had originally hit her with it for no reason so I can't use a whip for my training
You could replace the whip with the end of your leap rope. But i think the best thing to do is to desensitise her to the whip. Although there are many videos online that discuss whip desensitisation, if you aren't confident the best thing to do is ask your instructor or an experienced horse person to help you. :)
i feel like your gonna be the new Amy flemming off heartland!!😊
skye_ lynette03 yessss 😂
I agree!!!
Yesssss i love heartland
Yesssss I feel u
Last week I went to my first show , this is all because of you.
Thank you! Everyone I know starts out completely "free." Tried that and spent the entire afternoon running around a huge paddock with little results haha. This makes a lot more sense as a transition to free work based on how my horses has worked thus far :)

Carolyn Resnick's Waterhole Rituals teaches it starting out completely "free". Learn the language of equus then you can do it.

The poor horse in the background was like I want to be in the video too! I wanna be famous!! Teach me! Teach me! and just gives up cause it was ignored. XD
Thankyou so much Ellie for putting this vid on the tube. Very helpful indeed. You are a beautiful soul.
Amazing video! I think this is going to help me very much. When will the next liberty training video be out? :)
Lovely video, how do you keep the horses interest without the use of treats? Mine would just start grazing!
LOL Mine too!!!
I am glad she doesn't use treats. It show that the horse understands that she is the leader of the 'herd'.
They have a mutually respectful relationship. You do not need treats to accomplish that.
sonseere10 she does though......
I did it yesterday without a whip or anything 😂 And Ziggy has never done liberty before, but this is a great video for horses that don’t understand the point! 😄 My next lesson will be liberty, which is awesome! i watched this & started working with my pony right after! this is so easy to follow & understand! thanks for sharing 😊
This is just beautiful !!! Well done !!! It#s really inspirational :)
Keep sharing ❣️I am getting a little Colt soon and this is how I plan on Training Him 💜🐴Laura from California 🇺🇸

Sky's The Limit Schleich Stable yes thank you for this video
My horse and me have a so strong bond so after a month riding her she automatically followed me and she could gallop, canter, trot and walk
Samantha Smith, Wow!... best comment ever. Congrats!.
I really like your way to teach your horse. I do some liberty work with my horse but I think I wasn't that clear in what I want so he didn't understand sometimes. This is a great way to start liberty training! Did you ever make the liberty circle video??

Keep up with the liberty videos Ellie ;-)
*The proper use for bending poles!*
wdym???? pole bending on horse back and rodeo is way more fun!
OMG THANKS SO SO SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! This helped me so so so much I’m subscribing!!!!

Well presented, informative and good sound, Excellent!
when will your next video come out? im so excited! ill try this tomorrow!
Great video! Very clear! Thank you!
Thank you for posting this for us. Where do I find the next video, please? I am working with my filly on this and my two saddle breeds. Thanks!
Very nice and gentle

Does anyone have any tips for encouraging your horse to go faster while their following you? My horse will follow me at the walk but I have to put so much pressure on her to get her to trot. Any suggestions?
Raechel Annen use a whip as a extended arm and just keep reminding them until they get it and when they do reward them a lot
My horse used to do this but I started running with him and a lead so that he knew that when I gave a tug on the rope it meant to speed up and it worked
hey! what about horse who loves grass?

Hello, loved this video, but I cant find your video about starting liberty circles

Im so sorry for your loss, losing an animal is very hard.
Hi
The horses often had its ears back.
Thanks for the help just want to ask if you don't have bending poles what do you use
QUESTION ABOUT HORSE LIBIRTY! Okay so my mare tends to chase me around in the round pen. so i can run around and she trots after me. How do i know if she mad at me while following me or if she is following me as in libirty?
My horse is called monte !
My horse loves liberty!!
the pony that I want to start doing liberty with is very energetic and young, she barely gets ridden or exercised, so when I turn her in the paddock she starts running like a maniac.
I love this, I think it will help me a lot!
I love the Aussie slang !!! ☺️
My horse does it with a halter on but he just starts grazing when I take the lead rope off. Also he doesn't trot he only walks.
What size is your whip? What do you do if your horse is afraid of the whip, for the horse I ride a whip means faster to her.
my horse has been taught to move away from someone’s body, how do i retrain that without teaching him that he can invade my personal space?
My horses follow me in a walk but I can't encourage them to increase speed. What should I do?
Great stuff - going to try this out now thanks x
Hey! Is there going to be a liberty circles video? I can’t find it x
How do I get my horse to trot beside me? He doesn't stay with me but he falls behind
jade amean just like how you asked your horse to walk on the lead rope with a whip at a walk do the same thing but at a trot and when it gets behind give some encouragement from behind with the whip and see how it goes then keep at it til your horse gets it down
that was so cool. i wish i could do that
My horse isn't the type to play with and trot with me. How can I get her excited?
where did you get this whip? :)
How you you keep the horses interest? My horse just starts grazing :/
Wow thanks! This was very helpful!😊

Is it best to work outside or inside without distractions?

It's sounds like you have some underlying issues going on.
She can do it with out a whip or a lead but she's to lazy to trot or canter with me😂
Ellie Sales , thanks so much I will try to find a trainer, but t in my area there's not many
Yes, I have advice.
I can never get him to line up with me
He's also a slow, bit lazy, walker will it work with him?
Where is the liberty circle video?
I've tried to teach the gelding that I ride to respond to nothing but my seat with no reins, however he was gelded proud so he thinks he is a stallion (🤦🏼♀️😂) and he really doesn't respond. Any tips ?
Did you upload the liberty circle video?
hey um i have a quarter horse x paint mare and she is quite pushy and when i do this all she wants to do is eat the grass!! please help!!
Oh, interesting. I think that maybe I'll try this.
I'm going to try liberty with my horse Angelina
Loose the clip. And use a lead line that ties to the rope halter. No metal around a horse's head.
Gerry Coleman seriously?.... What the hell do you think bits are 😂 are you actually that stupid 😂
Sydney Eitelgeorge you do know that there is no metal bit required to ride a horse, don't you?
Gallop Girl you are totally correct
True. No metal. Not needed. No bits or spurs or buckles or chains, if you respect your horse. Liberty is about mutual respect instead of fear or force or pain, which is unfortunately still the norm.
Hmmm! Well said!
Where are you at? It looks africkenmazing
My horse is great about walking with me but when ever we go to trot he gets angry and/or runs off. Anyone have any tips?
Hi my horse won’t let me use a whip what can I do then
I really want to do this but my horse just doesn’t want to do it. He’ll just start eating instead of listening ;(
I love this. ❤️
My horse is named Monte as well 💕💕💕
