Sean, I walked into a church in the E. Village during an anti Viet Nam protest and standing inn the center of that small hallowed ground stood Joan Baez and Country Joe singing protest songs. I still tremble when I recall that moment.
I am SO grateful this clip shows the name of the writer of this song, Zoe Mulford. In the earlier clip from this interview I heard Joan say the song was written by a young girl... first I'd heard of attribution. This was a wonderful interview and performance by a truly gifted and blessed person. Thank you, Joan and Thank you Skavlan. Magnificent!
Thank you so much for this! The most beautiful song on the new CD....Baez is a National Treasure for the entire world and still The Queen of Folk....Now that's aging gracefully! Long Live the Queen~
Ah Joan! When I hear you, I am so proud to be an American. From my teens hearing you sing under the swaying of the coconut tree in the courtyard of the torpid afternoon heat in India, to the cool evenings in Northern California, I've traveled through time with you. How quickly that river of time flows. I am here now in the same place as you, never having met you, but admiring you so much. I love you Joan, and thank you for your service to the country and to the world. And your songs, those glorious songs!
I've seen Joan Baez in concert several times in LA and I have loved her for a long time. She is such an inspiration to better my soul, heart and mind. Peace, Love and Harmony. Long live Joan Baez !!! xoxo
I saw her perform free, one year in San Diego, during the War years. I ultimately chose to leave at the intermission, because for every wonderful song, she gave a political speech even longer. I truly admired her passion, but not being a political person myself, couldn't make myself stay for the music.
trout fishing - I was dedicated rock fan, but some friends talked me into seeing Joan at the Santa Monica Civic. Jesus, she had no back up. It was just her with an acoustic guitar. But her voice! And she’s an extremely talented guitarist. Every song was good, she was funny and loose, and -Yes - she was promoting an agenda (that’s what she does). It wasn’t preachy in the sense of admonishing the audience, it was a benefit for the United Farm Workers, and she just explained what the situation was and asked for any help anyone was willing to offer. She’s only political in area of non-violence. There weren’t any calls to support candidates or legislation. I don’t think she even believes in voting (she doesn’t vote herself), and she explained why: she doesn’t trust the process. Given what we now know about how we pick our leaders, she was nothing less than prescient. I have to say it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
Joan says her voice is affected by age, but damn, she's still got it! Perfect pitch, great phrasing and control, more so than most singers 50 years younger than her.
JAGAE : #Bernie2020 !! The man who is on a mission to provide everyone with FREE healthcare insurance, which America doesn’t have because when Harry Truman tried to enact it, white people blanched at the prospect of sharing hospitals with black people. Yes, I thought that I would just leave ‘blanched’ in there. It boggles the mind that people think he was a great president. PS: Watch #DemocracyNow which has archived every show that they ever did. The website frequently has musical guests, and they talk and perform ( They talk as long as they want to. ) #RacismHurtsEveryone

A young man came to a house of prayer They did not ask what brought him there He was not friend, he was not kin But they opened the door and let him in And for an hour the stranger stayed He sat with them and seemed to pray But then the young man drew a gun And killed nine people, old and young In Charleston in the month of June The mourners gathered in a room The President came to speak some words And the cameras rolled and the nation heard But no words could say what must be said For all the living and the dead So on that day and in that place The President sang Amazing Grace The President sang Amazing Grace We argued where to lay the blame On one man's hate or our nation's shame Some sickness of the mind or soul And how the wounds might be made whole But no words could say what must be said For all the living and the dead So on that day and in that place The President sang Amazing Grace My President sang Amazing Grace
Not a partisan issue. It is odd, this tribute to religious feeling. But there was always a strand of thought in those old lefties that respected the traditions of the people they came from. Like Guthrie’s original ‘This Land’ chorus, was ‘God blessed this land for you and me’’. Well, this is what it is.
Great Joan , as usual ... and in despite of your opinion itself , I think your voice is still wonderful , well-aged like a good wine , and you are that backyard bus walking down the road but u stopped and u've singing to us
How can there be no thumbs down ? I can believe that Joan Baez is well liked and may be the most gracious person in the world. Very happy to see her and still a good listen .
Joan Baez,is a legend. She's the personification of Love through Music. The way she emoted this song in this setting. So Sad what that fool did to those innocent people in the church. Love will always prevail.
It's November 4. We're still waiting to know if we must endure four more years of Trump. I asked my phone to play Joan Baez and this came up.Never heard it before.Cried like a baby.
What a tremendous blessing to have lived at the same time as Joan Baez! We've been young together, we've aged together. Thank you, Universe.
Our Christmastime always started hearing Joan Baez sing . She will forever be part of my life and memories

Wonderful!! I'm from southern part of India and I was introduced to Joan's music by my mum.
She as a person and her voice are hauntingly beautiful! Thank you, Joan for you and your music!
I've often heard the name. Now I know the voice. And what a joy it is!
Thank you so much for that beautiful tribute, Joan. Very powerful,
I've had a crush on Joan Baez for more than fifty years, and it's not just or even primarily her outward beauty or her voice---it's her soul.
I love that she just stayed right where she was sat and grabbed her guitar. Felt like a jam sesh in the living room :)
Joan as been in my record collection since the early 60's...thanks Joan...and congrats on your Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You are loved.
One of my favorite singers of all time. I'm so lucky I got to see her live in concert one time. ❤

Still got it Queen Joan.
I don't think she's ever sought to be a queen. She's spent her career trying to shine a light on others, not on herself.

We argued where to lay the blame
On one man's hate or our nation's shame
Some sickness of the mind or soul

But no words could say what must be said
For all the living and the dead
So on that day and in that place
