  • “Ultimately, this is about remembrance of Allah.”
In this first of two sessions on the inner dimension of Prayer given at Al-Maqasid’s October 2021 retreat titled, 'On Prayer: A Study of Book 4 of the Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din’, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains the six states of the heart one should have while praying:
    • Presence of heart (ḥuḍūr al-qalb)
    • Understanding (tafahhum)
    • Exaltation (ta‘ẓīm)
    • Awe (hayba)
    • Hope (rajā’)
    • Shame (ḥayā’)
He also provides practical advice on how to acquire these states. Shaykh Yahya begins this session by translating a powerful metaphor of Imam al-Ghazali that shows the beauty and wisdom of going beyond the obligatory acts of prayer by performing the Sunnas and following the rules of etiquette.
