At 3:40 you show inserting the shaft back into the shock body. I found that if you don't tighten up the bottom cap that has the two O-rings and spacer, it is a LOT easier to get that shaft through the bottom cap. Tightening that bottom cap before inserting the shaft causes expansion of the two O-rings making it harder for the shaft to insert through the bottom cap assembly. In fact, I would think that sliding that shaft through the O-rings after the cap has been fully tightened can cause abrasion and damage of the O-rings from the threaded portion of the shaft. Thought others would like to be aware of this tip.
I found that odd too. Use $40 snap-on screw drivers and wire cutters on the shaft? I see their point and it's better than what most people would use. I just used paper wrap and needle nose vice-grips
funny enough i actually was disassembling my shocks earlier today, and i couldn't figure out how to unscrew the top and bottom part. i figured i would use my screwdriver to put into the hole, and (the thing used here) for the bottom part. and that was without watching this video first!
My plastic spacer in between seals on my Traxxas TRX-4 shocks were far too big. This caused the seals to be pinched when replacing the lower cap. I sanded mine down but hopefully Traxxas takes note of this
Question guys. If the shocks are to be filled up fully. Then how is it that if the shock is too full and won't depress/ Release some oil for the fix. That part made no sense bro. Can you clarify/ is there a shock style or brand that needs this method of taking some oil out to make it depress. Or are shocks easily overfilled and becomes stiff. I'm new to the hobby just learning. Spent 1300on a mini revo and a crap ton of gear and upgrade parts. 4 extra batteries and all that good Jaz. Anyways why I ask this is because I have 80 weight oil and will do my oil change after I watch some shock maintenance Videos. Nice video Brutha 👊😎

Hello TRAXXAS I know it’s a long time since you’ve made this video I do hope you’ll see this My question. Is how comes with the TRAXXAS x maxx shocks their built with no rebound like I think pro racers would use the term a dead shock yet these slash shocks are built with rebound🤔 Thank you for making this video
Try compressing the shock shaft half to three quarters of the way in before installing the diaphragm and shock cap. If that doesn’t work maybe you’re over filling the shock try a little less oil.
Traxxas also sells upgrade shafts for their ultra shocks. They're hardened steel with a more durable titanium nitride coating. Use part number 1664T for the front and 2656T for the rear.
I need some help, my ultra shocks have oil on the shafts after they compress. The seals are absolutely perfect so no oil ‘should’ be leaking. Should I just buy big bores and forget about these?
Well, your Tires may not be Balanced!! I have a Traxxas Nitro Slash, and i had to Balance the Front 2 Tires!!! I used Red Modeling Clay. Red Matched my Rimes. I put the clay on the inside of the Rimes.
That means you don't have any rebound. That's not necessarily a bad thing as long as you don't have any air in the shock. If you don't have rebound and hear bubbles when the shock is compressed, then it needs more oil.
The shocks on the slash 4x4 are bad. Today i went to a skate park i didnt go to crazy with it and 2 shocks got the top cap ripped off. Also the plastic driveshaft on the rear keeps breaking. My dads senton got a hell of a beating and it survived only a tire blew.
You can fix the shock cap problem with aluminum caps (you don't have to replace the whole shock). For the driveshafts, you might want to try the ones from the Rustler 4x4 VXL. They're bigger than the stock Slash 4x4 driveshafts so they should be able to take more beating. Part number 6852A for the rears, 6851A for the fronts.
Shocks dont usually "squeak" but if it does you could have a bent shock shaft or worn piston. I would say its more likely that your turnbuckles or a arms where they pivot are squeaking.
It's been 2 hours of trying to snap in the top e clip to the shaft. This step seems nearly impossible and I doubt I'll be able to do it anytime soon.... Absolutely frustrating.
What shock oil comes in the stock ultra shocks, I like the way my Brushless E-Maxx came and it still has the stock ultra shocks but I broke 2 and ordered more but don't know what shock oil Traxxas uses. I've got a bottle Traxxas silicone shock oil and not sure if that's what came in my truck
For me this does not work, I use the original shock absorbers from the Trx4 Sport and if I fill them exactly like that, they can not be pressed together ...
Traxxas sells upgrade shafts for their ultra shocks. They're hardened steel, making them more resistant to bending, and have a more durable titanium nitride coating. Use part number 1664T for the front and 2656T for the rear.
I just recently purchased a Traxxas UDR and I am having front end problems ...when I turn and accelerate the front end shakes. Can this be a binding issue in the front differential?
that's not a very easy to understand answer but having a little experience I don't know what you're talkin about try explaining it to him where he'll understand it's really stupid that Traxxas doesn't include things like this in their owners manual you get with the model most people don't even know you can do all that stuff to it I just found it out by accident
Tsm is if your rc is going to flip the rc will turn and try to save it self it can be adjusted on the multi function knob and mine has shook since the day I got it.
@@zakk87pl Thanks for the answer. Being on lock down I am waiting for the original fluid to be shipped... so was looking for a solution in the mean time. Anyway, it didn't work because it is way too fluid and... you are right... I think the seals didn't really like it.
i like how that shock was FULL of oil. FACT its not that way from the factory. Fact its almost empty from factory. Go ahead ask me how i know. I litteraly just did this on a slash less than 3 weeks old..... BS btw. it should be FULL NOT HALF EMPTY. Traxxas you owe me 17 bucks for shock oil.
Thank the lord that this channel exists
I couldn’t figure out how to put on the shock oil stuff I can’t put it together

I probably wouldn't grab the shock shaft with a pair of side cutters. It'll put a nick in shaft. Just use a set of shock shaft pliers.
Fuel line tubing slipped over some small needle nose pliers works well too.
I found that odd too. Use $40 snap-on screw drivers and wire cutters on the shaft? I see their point and it's better than what most people would use. I just used paper wrap and needle nose vice-grips
If you grab the shaft close to the threads , you wont nick the shaft where it slides on the o-rings.
You can also use needle nose pliers with electrical tape rapped around them to prevent maring the shock shaft
Oh yeah Traxxas is hitting home runs !!!!!!

Cool! Man! Great job. Shocks are not that fun for me yet. But, i manage.
Congratulations on your new found mechanical aptitude, you're basically a master technician.
I'm a simple man, I see RC stuff and I click.

Great vib, you save my life 🤝
This was a lot of help. Thanks!
Please can you guys make another nitro support video for after run maintenance and maybe cleaning?
Amazing video!!! Love your guys cars!!!!!😄
On the website it doesn’t specify to pull the shock shaft out before the top cap but the vid helped thanks
Thanks traxxas! Really helpful :)

could do with some more videos on this channel
Thanks man that just happen to my rustler vxl cool shot off I fixed thanks to u but need new shock tho
Pls more video on slash VXL brushless 2wd cause I'm getting it
Just bought a new rc and I love the shocks. How do I get my older rc like the new one?
4:51, nu shock are not coming back up, how can i fix this?

Good video! Thanks.
can you do this for the gtr shocks plz? i have a hard time getting the right amount oil in the shocks
Try putting about 95 percent of the way full, push the shaft up and down to bleed, add more to all the way full and push on the bladder
Is one bottle of 30 ml of shock
oil enough?
Radim Ziegler no
Thanks, will buy 2 bottles then
Radim Ziegler dont buy 30wt it sucks buy 450sct and use the 1 hole pistons included with the slash
Yes, 30ml shock oil shoul be good. The shocks are not that big, and the shocks dont take much shock oil
i put new oil in my slash shocks, rear ones are fine but the fronts are just like pogo sticks
Did you make sure all air bubbles were bled?
Try compressing the shock shaft half to three quarters of the way in before installing the diaphragm and shock cap. If that doesn’t work maybe you’re over filling the shock try a little less oil.
So I thought that rebound was not ideal?
Depends on your setup and conditions where you run
The amount of bent shafts Ive had is absolutely ridiculous. WHY DONT THEY MAKE THEM THICKER?!
First run out with fresh shocks and I bent the shaft 🙃
Traxxas also sells upgrade shafts for their ultra shocks. They're hardened steel with a more durable titanium nitride coating. Use part number 1664T for the front and 2656T for the rear.

Love it
Lol I ran the left tire of my bandit vxl into a mailbox...
L Yik what the heck has that got to do with rebuilding shocks
Noah Rollins I ran mine into a lamp post
Pop Wall maybe he needs to rebuild his shocks after he hit the mailbox.
Pop Wall it could break the shock off
Well it unscrewed itself and it needed fresh oil.
Are spring retainers all the same size for different cars
No, they are all different. ultra shocks have bigger retainers than big bore. idk about any others. also some might be the same.
What could cause one new shock to move back slower than its paired shock?
Bent shaft
For me this does not work, I use the original shock absorbers from the Trx4 Sport and if I fill them exactly like that, they can not be pressed together ...
Ty soo much
My shock shaft is bent at a 90 degree angle
I went full speed into a pole, don't ask
Traxxas sells upgrade shafts for their ultra shocks. They're hardened steel, making them more resistant to bending, and have a more durable titanium nitride coating. Use part number 1664T for the front and 2656T for the rear.
No locktight?
My ESC XL5 on my slash 2wd doesn't tern on and my battery is fully charged I don't know what to do can someone tell me what to do please and thankyou.
Little Bryan have you tried re calibrating it?
Edward Ruiz no but if I do it will it work
Little Bryan it should fix it, I did that with mine, another test would be another battery. Could be that also.
Edward Ruiz Ok I'll do that thank you
try calling traxxas
I just recently purchased a Traxxas UDR and I am having front end problems ...when I turn and accelerate the front end shakes. Can this be a binding issue in the front differential?

Never use side cuter
is this for traxxas slash 2wd and 4wd?
Both models use the same ultra shocks.
Nice
I'm trying to rebuild emax 3906 and everything is Rusty
Try soaking the rusty parts in some apple cider vinegar
Is this cheaper than a new shock?
Yes. The ultra shock rebuild kits are around 3 dollars each
do i need to lubricate the shocks? and if yes what lubricant use?
micapl12 no. It's all set. Unless it seems to bind a little then a drop or 2 of oil worked in wouldn't hurt anything.
I wish I could get RC car but we are poor
my shock aren't rebounding unless there is a spring in place, Is this a problem?
Carter Bostick possibly
Try and rebuild it
Might fix prob
This is normal the oil keeps it from compressing to fast
he's not talkin about compression he's talkin about the rebound boy you guys just aren't too smart
I can’t get the shock cap out I’ve tried everything
Did you turn it?
Oh my I thought I had to buy new shocks mine are used asf and I could not drive my rc
How much oil do you put in initially prior to final filling?
Close enough to the top that you can stroke the piston up and down getting the air out but not pushing any oil out.
@@ian.thompson nice yz bro is that a 250
@@aidenmaves5537 thanks man! it’s a 125.
Can I use 5W40 or 5W30 engine motor oil to fill my shocks?
Car oil will damage the seals.
@@zakk87pl Thanks for the answer.

Traxxas Ultra Fragile shock shafts. Why name them after any other very fitting word.
Can't seem to get the shock out of the a arm
Good morning Traxxas.
Good morning! Well, actually...good afternoon!

Rebuilding ultra shocks is a nightmare they never work properly
It’s going to leak out the oil now lol
MILIAN49 and let air in making annoying squeaking sounds
Yeah I always hated the squeaking of the shocks.
I just but motor oil to my rustler's front suspension
How does it work ?
No hate but ultra shocks ARE CRAP! The caps always pop off and the shafts bend easy ( if your a basher)
I use aluminum shock caps and hardened shafts, both of which Traxxas sells, and haven't had either issue.
I feel like it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a hole new set of shocks for $20.
