9:40 That is a wonderful observation, and there is lore behind it that I can mostly sum up in a pair of quotes. "Rejoice at the end of Kings." and "Kill them, until they are family.". Noxus is a Militarist, Expansionist Meritocracy with a STONG sense of Might makes Right and Survival of the Fittest.
They conquer not just because they are Greedy or Evil, but because the majority of Noxians genuinely believe that the people they conquer are better off as part of Noxus than serving under their current rulers. And the scary part is... They're Probably Right. They don't slaughter those they conquer after the war is won, they fold them into their ranks and welcome them as Citizens of the Empire. Noxus is a tough place, and NOT where you want to be if you're crippled or handicapped in some real way. But for those with vision, strength or guile, there is no better place to be than Noxus.
There is a lot of more subtle action going on behind the scenes, the looming threat of Mordekaiser's return, Swain's visions of looming apocalypses, machinations of a Secret Society Cult called The Black Rose and some Actually Just Warcrimes(cough cough Singed, Sion and Rell), but it all goes into building a very interesting and unusual "Bad Guy" empire.

@@AvanteReacts Quite the opposite actually, Swain isnt a very emotional character, he is calm and calculating. a quote from him to irelia if you taunt her in game (i think?) is: "Am i to seek revenge for my poor departed arm? If anything girl... you did me a favour."
After their fight, he was left with an injured leg and without an arm, and as he was bleeding out on the ground, Raum came in crow form presumably to feast on secrets, it is how Swain and Raum met, tho much is left to speculation on how exactly Swain got Raum to agree to let Swain control him altho another quote from swain is "never make a deal with a demon that you intend to keep" , so take from that what you will. A few other characters have a few quotes where they seem to think or imply that it is inevitable for swain to lose control of raum eventually, and it is even possible that swain knows this and plans on it, and that is probably a big reason as to why he made sure that he isnt the only ruler of noxus and that he has the other two to keep him in check just in case.

    • @verdadlumin7423
      @verdadlumin7423 Год назад

@@FallenGranny He most likely made a "Faust deal" in order to even make Rhaum give 1 flying fuck about what a mortal could give him, but Swain gave him the good ol' "bambozoole" and now he is in control. but barely. He is in borrowed time since the more secrets and souls of people he takes (yes, Rhaum consumes the souls and learn ALL of the victim secrets instead of slivers of it) the more powerful and hard to control Rhaum becomes. Even Samira and LeBlanc states this:
Swain: "By my hand will Noxus rise"
LeBlanc: "which hand? yours or the demon's?"
Samira: "Hey general! how much time we have before the demon takes over?"
Also the skin of Tyrant Swain is a "what if skin" that shows how Swain would look and act if he got consumed by Rhaum.

    • @FallenGranny
      @FallenGranny Год назад

@@verdadlumin7423 i agree on most points you made, but imo it would be rather impossible for any mortal, even a borderline genius one like Swain, to outsmart or deceive a literal demon of secrets, how do you keep your true intensions hidden from something that is capable of passively sensing/consuming them? Also afaik we dont really have any idea of how powerful Raum really is outside of Swain cos we just dont have that much lore on Raum afaik, so who knows if he is giving only a sliver of power to Swain or if Swains current power is pretty much the limit of Raum himself.
Also its important to note that Swain thinks the deal is trivial or doesnt need to be paid, which if we look at how other demons behave like Tahm Kench for example, is complete nonsense, a demons price is always steep, and i think that swain is smart enough to know that, so clearly swain is planning on doing something himself to avoid paying whatever the price is that they agreed upon. If we apply Kindreds voiceline towards swain by tying it with the deal that Swain made (even though Kindred could be talking about something completely different) it becomes even more ominous and supports the idea of Raums price being steep. Also idk if i am wrong but it seems fairly impossible to prevent a demon from collecting on his deal made, unless you are somehow significantly more powerful than the demon in question, and also afaik there arent any examples of people tricking demons in the lore, and getting away with it with no consequences right?
Ultimately though i think that Riot can take this storyline into many different places, and its up to us to either believe in Swain and trust his plan, or to think that Raum will eventually get the better of him and screw everything up, which makes the uncertainty very interesting indeed.
Also full disclosure im not a huge loremaster, im just a Swain main so i could be wrong about some things, but im confident in my Swain lore knowledge.

  • @surrealllama
    @surrealllama Год назад +1

Really late obviously but here’s some explanations/elaborations on these, especially since the video doesn’t specify whom or what each quote is directed towards.
    1. This quote is directed towards Poppy, referencing Poppy’s quest to find the “hero of Demacia.”
    2. Generic quote, used during his crtl+2 taunt in LoL.
    3. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    4. Ditto.
    5. Ditto.
    6. Ditto.
    7. Ditto.
    8. This is actually two quotes stitched together, the first half is a generic quote for capturing an objective in LoL, but the latter half referencing Vastaya blood is a response to a quote from the champion Rakan. Rakan claims Swain is wasting the Vastayan blood he has inside him, while Swain seems to insinuate his was involved in a slaughter of the Vastayan people (most likely during his campaign as a general in Ionia,) and dismisses idea that he was born with or somehow gifted Vastayan blood. Personally I also think this line is a retcon, as Rakan’s voiceline was directed at pre-rework Swain, where there was no demon present in his lore and “Vastayan blood” could be a plausible explanation for his magic and ability to turn into a raven, this quote disproves this possibility.
    9. Generic quote referencing his own lore. Swain’s full name is Jericho Swain, and he was to nobility (a patrician,) but he chose to pursue a education in stratagem. This further highlights just how much Swain personally despises the concept of nobility, as he had both of his parents executed for treason, has no tolerance for tyranny, issued laws and edicts that limited the power of noble houses, and in the short story “The Principles of Strength,” shows disdain for the concept of hereditary inheritance and pits himself against the nobles of the Delverhold. He also had his house, House Swain, disbanded shortly after his parents’ deaths.
    10. Generic quote. Refers to the literal demonic power he holds in his left hand, and that in Noxus, a country where merit trumps all and the strongest and smartest lead, it is the right to rule.
    11. Generic quote referencing his own lore. Swain was intentionally lead to defeat in Ionia by the Black Rose (we’ll get back to that.) and Grand General Boram Darkwill (the previous ruler of Noxus.) He was deprived of resources and reinforcements before a major battle at “the Placidium,” a turning point in the war. The battle would leave Swain with one less arm and a shattered leg after an encounter with another champion named Irelia. Because of his failure and because Darkwill’s regime looked sourly upon cripples, Swain was stripped of his rank and expelled from the military, but he witnessed glimpses of Raum during his near death experience (its suggested people’s secrets are most often extracted by Raum when they die,) and he was able to find Raum deep within the Immortal Bastion (a massive fortress serving as the capital of Noxus, built long ago by the champion Mordekaiser.) He apparently tricks Raum into an unfair deal and then uses his newfound power to execute a coup against Darkwill. This quote recognizes the irony that the reason they belittled and exiled him would eventually lead to his triumph over them. Some new lore also suggests Swain is much more accepting of cripples in Noxus, a look into a core part of his belief system since he believes only merit and strength matter.
    12. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    13. Ditto.
    14. Ditto.
    15. Ditto.
    16. Ditto.
    17. Ditto.
    18. Generic quote, similar quotes suggest secrets and visions come to him in whispers, maybe others can also hear Raum? It’s also worth noting the whispers Swain hear in game are feminine, which could suggest Raum is a feminine figure or even feminine but male, a common theme with European-style demons (see King Paimon.) This could also reference the fact that one of his ravens (and his favorite) is named Beatrice, a feminine name.
    19. Generic, these quotes are also spliced together for some reason. Second half plays when Swain places a ward in LoL, a tool that lets you see things even when you are not present, much like how his ravens operate in lore.
    20. Generic quote that only plays when using the Bilgewater Swain skin, in which Swain is a pirate lord vying for control over the pirate nation of Bilgewater.
    21. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    22. Ditto.
    23. This quote refers to Ekko, it could imply many things but personally I believe it suggests Swain is interpreting secrets from Ekko after he as already used his Zero Drive to travel back in time, potentially after losing in a battle against Swain since failure is often why Ekko uses the Zero Drive. This basically gives Swain the ability to see into the future, at least through Ekko’s eyes.
    24. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    25. Ditto.
    26. Ditto.
    27. Ditto.
    28. Generic quote, could be referring to a variety of unseen or obscured threats throughout Runeterra. Most likely referring to the Watchers, Eldritch beings that are hidden in the darkness of space.
    29. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    30. This refers to the Freljord, an ancient and disunited land who are threatened by a variety of things as the magical wards left by their forebears literally fade away, unleashing ancient evils.
    31. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    32. Refers to Bilgewater, where locals have to fight against the Black Mist and the Harrowing constantly (the mist above the seas,) but Swain insinuates there is a greater threat beneath. This could refer to a variety of things; Nautilus, Pyke, or most likely Nagakabouros, which some speculate is actually related to the Void.
    33. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    34. Ditto.
    35. Ditto.
    36. Ditto.
    37. Generic quote, plays at match start in LoL, obviously referring to the battle that will soon occur, maybe even referencing the fact that it happens over and over again at the same location within the game.
    38. This quote refers to the champion Darius, an important figure in Noxus and a great ally to Swain. It specifically references the events of the “Darius: Blood of Noxus” comic, in which Darius has a lover that dies. Within the comic it’s speculated whether or not his lover bore any children before she died, Swain expresses indifference, to him family doesn’t matter, only the empire and found family matter, and so he suggest his daughters/sons are his soldiers. Darius expresses distaste for the sentiment that family doesn’t matter in the “The Principles of Strength” short story.
    39. This quote refers to the champion Elise, a Noxian noble and member of the Black Rose who uses seduction to lure people to the Shadow Isles, where she feeds them to the spider god Vilemaw in exchange for immortality (it also makes his look like a spider, spooky!) I interpret this quote as a sort of Runeterran spin on the term “skeletons in your closet.” As in her vaults are empty of what they ought to hold and instead house the obscene amount of murders she’s committed.
    40. This quote refers to the Undercity/Zaun, it simply highlights how much of a hellhole it really is, and yet children still play and grow down in the depths, almost like a twisted appreciation of Human resilience, very apropos for Swain.
    41. This quote refers to the champion Viego, but also the champion Mordekaiser. It’s suggested (or at least is was suggested before Viego’s release) that the Ruined King and Mordekaiser drew from the same sort of power, this quote clarifies that connection.
    42. This quote refers to the Black Rose. Swain is criticizing the Black Rose for expanding their empire only through murder, misdirection, and other backhanded methods, while it is suggested that Swain at least occasionally takes a diplomatic approach to expansion, and at the very least only conducts his conquests through legal manners. Oh also the Black Rose seem to kill each other a lot, like a lot a lot.
    43. This quote is a generic quote referring to all Demons, it suggests that Demons derive their power and even their mannerisms and appearances from Humanity, to the point that they are a literal dark reflection of Humanity and their wrongdoings. Secrets, fearmongering, agony, obsession, and many more if the Noxian Grimoire that released with the Fiddlesticks rework is to be believed.
    44. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
    45. This quote refers to the Void. It seems to elaborate on the fact that the Void very much consumes, studies, and evolves, that it’s a living magic that takes the form of what it sees and absorbs.
    46. Generic quote, plays when Swain dies and acts as a direct reference to Edgar Alan Poe, author of “The Raven,” which serves as inspiration for many of Swain’s motifs.
    47. Generic quote, plays when destroying a structure in LoL.
    48. Generic quote, a glimpse into Swain’s ideology and belief in the few for the many.
    49. Generic quote, a glimpse into Swain’s personal view on what a true Noxian is.
    50. Generic quote, another glimpse into Swain’s belief system.
    51. Ditto.
    52. A quote showing distaste for his dissenters. There are several champions shown to be opposed or indifferent to Swain’s rule, and in lore the majority of noble houses are angry with his actions.
    53. Generic quote, once again showing glimpses of Swain’s ethics and philosophy.
    54. Ditto.
    55. Generic quote, referring to how the shadows of his ravens overhead is a symbol of the influence of Noxus over conquered and soon to be conquered lands.

      56. A quote referring to the champion Kindred, a spirit that can be summarized as the Runeterran version of Death. It proposes the hypothetical that Death would come for Swain, and how Swain would attempt to bargain with Death that taking him now would leave Noxus under the influence of Raum, or the Black Rose, or Mordekaiser.
      57. Generic quote, sheds light on Swain’s intolerance for tyranny and incompetence. Noxians HATE kings and queens.
      58. Generic quote, Swain explains how people choose which “truth” to believe.
      59. These two quotes are spliced together, the first half is a generic quote for killing an enemy champion, while the second half is a quote referring specifically to Demacians, who Swain seems to regard as rather simple and dim-witted.
      60. Generic quote, Swain emphasizes his belief that everyone has their purpose, just like destiny.
      61. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
      62. Generic quote, plays during gameplay when “losing” (down gold.)
      63. Generic quote, plays when attacking another champion.
      64. This quote refers to Vastayans, not much of what he means here has been elaborated on, or at the very least I haven’t read any materials on it. Maybe there’s some sort of curse placed upon Vastayans? Or maybe he’s speaking more metaphorically.
      65. A quote that plays when attacking a Freljordian while using the skin Northern Front Swain, which as you can probably infer involves Swain fighting in snow and cold, which Freljordians are accustomed to.
      66. Swain dismisses virtuosic interpretations of war as a means to an end, no matter what the ends of war is death, men and women will die.
      67. Similar to above, a quote about Swain’s outlook on warfare.
      68. Generic quote, plays during gameplay when “losing” (down gold.)
      69. Ditto.
      70. Generic quote, plays when respawning after death, just like being left for dead in Ionia, death is only a minor setback for Swain’s grand scheme.
      71. A look into Swain’s appreciation for tactics and strategy, even with a Demon that hands him all the intel he needs he plans meticulously.
      72. Generic quote, actually a reference to Game of Thrones, as Swain’s voice actor played a role in the show.
      73. Generic quote, plays when killing a champion.
      74. Swain’s quote when picked, reflects on his own opinion that the things he can’t see should be what’s truly troubling, and also refers to the fact that Swain appears to be an old man, but is actually one of the most dangerous Human characters in the entirety of League’s lore.
      75. Swain believes others fear their true feelings and motivations being revealed more than they fear the unknown.
      76. Swain interjects himself as the abyss that stares back, a figure obscured from view that others can understand, but that can understand them just fine.
      77. Generic quote, a taunt directed towards Swain’s enemies.
      78. Ditto.
      79. A generic quote once again highlighting Swain’s knack for diplomacy.
      80. Another look into Swain’s opinions on strategy.
      81. A quote referring to the champion Shen, an important figure in Ionia who works to maintain balance between the physical world and the spirit world. Swain showcases his hatred of tyranny here, outlining Shen’s efforts as useless, as there is no true balance if someone is tipping the scale a certain direction, as he is. Also a look into Swain’s objectivity. A lot of people would classify Noxians and Ionians as arch enemies, and yet Swain consults Shen here as if they were acquaintances.
      82. Swain’s ban quote, he highlights that cowardice and attempting to avoid what you fear is often confused with wisdom and preparing for what could occur.
      83. Generic quote, segways quite nicely into the Katarina comic, as Swain asks things of Katarina.
      84. Generic quote, refers to Swain’s delving into the depths of the Immortal Bastion in search of Raum. The Immortal Bastion is filled to the brim with countless relics and boundless knowledge from around Runeterra, dating back as far as the creation of Runeterra itself.
      85. Generic quote, plays when respawning after death.
      86. Generic quote, plays when killing an enemy champion.
      87. Generic quote, plays when encountering an enemy champion.
      88. Generic quote, plays when killing an enemy champion.
      89. Generic quote, plays when using the skin Bilgewater Swain, and a play on the quote “Dead men tell no tales.” The quote itself dates back to the sixteenth century but this is probably a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean, because of the pirate theme.
      90. This quote refers to the champion Aurelion Sol. Speculation mostly points to the idea that Aurelion Sol, a “Celestial,” is most likely siblings with the Watchers and by extension the Void. It’s unclear.
      91. A quote referring to the champion Kayn, a Noxian sent to Ionia as a child soldier under orders from Darkwill to sow confusion in Ionian ranks. This experience would lead to Kayn’s hatred of Noxus, and eventual adoption by the Ionian champion Zed. Zed’s hatred of Noxians reflects on Kayn, and their relationship is quite toxic, but Kayn confuses it with love due to his horrendous upbringing. The sad tone indicates that Swain finds Darkwill’s actions during the war regrettable.
      92. This quote refers to the champion Kassadin, a Shuriman who uses a variety of ancient Shuriman artifacts to delve into the Void in search of his daughter and wife, who disappeared in an incident involving the Void many years ago. This quote served as a teaser for the champion Kai’Sa, Kassadin’s daughter; detailed in the quote, there were rumors that a girl had somehow emerged from the Void.
      93. A quote referring to the champion Warwick, highly speculated to be Vander. This most likely suggests that Warwick is incapable of realizing Vi and/or Jinx are as close as they are because of the extermination he would have had to gone through to become Warwick.
      94. A quote referring to Ionians, it was already canon that Ionia had a special connection with the spirit world, almost as if they were overlapped, but this quote seems to suggest this connection may be unnatural, caused by some sort of hole or wound in the spirit world. My own personal theory is that it may have to do with Ivern’s (another champion from LoL,) lore.
      95. This quote refers to the champion Kalista, I’m not entirely versed on Kalista’s lore but I believe this is referencing the fact that Kalista made an oath of loyalty to Viego when he was still alive and king of Camavor.
      96. This quote directly references the events of the Katarina comic, in which Katarina’s father, Marcus, asks Katarina to murder Swain, as Marcus aligns with the Black Rose and opposes Swain’s rule. It’s also stated that Swain killed Marcus’ wife.
      97. This quote refers to the champion Taliyah. I’m also not too good on her lore, but I believe when she first discovered her power she was rather distraught with them until encouraged by her family and people.
      98. These quotes are spliced together, not sure why. The first half refers to the champion Galio, a massive living statue sculpted by a long dead Demacian named Durant. The latter refers to the champion Jarvan IV, whose blood was used to revive the champion Sion, a resurrected Noxian Warlord of legend. Swain obviously has a distaste both, as he is frustrated that Durant’s secrets are so difficult to uncover, and he finds Jarvan stupid and incompetent (in fact Swain and Jarvan are technically rivals,) and insults him by insinuating only his blood is useful. May also refer to some of the behind the scenes manipulation of Demacian nobility in the Lux and Katarina comics, in which Jarvan has noble blood.
      99. A quote referring to the champion Lux, presenting a hypothetical about Lux’s current situation. Is it worse that Lux may die in battle as a weapon for Demacia? Or is it worse that she falls in line with the racist and hypocritical ideology of Demacia, allowing herself to be exempt from punishment for her magic blood because of her royal lineage. The sad tone once again reveals Swain finds this all regrettable, as he most likely sees potential in Lux because of his meritocratic belief system (the strong should thrive and Lux is strong.)

      100. Refers to the champion Riven, in her lore, Riven’s warband was caught in the crossfire of an infamous Darkwill appointed general that used chemical weapons provided by Singed in Ionia. She watched her fellow Noxians as well as her enemies in Ionians burn and suffer in agony, and she wished for death because of the horrors she witnessed and felt responsible for because of her participation in the war. Excellent opportunity for me to shill the multi-part short story “Sisterhood of War” here, if you’re gonna read any LoL short story, read this one.
      101. Refers to the Jinx, specifically the incident that occurs in Arcane between her, Vander, and Vi.
      102. This quote is referring to the champion Cassiopeia, a Noxian related to Katarina and Talon. She spent her time manipulating people and tomb raiding in Shurima, but because of her wrongdoings would find herself cursed to become a half snake. This curse, however, would allow her entrance into the Black Rose.
      103. This quote refers to the champion Sion, and most likely the “Grey Legion” (an army composed of undead) as a whole. It suggests that the undead have a mere echo of their former soul, and as revealed by lore revolving around the Grey Legion, the soul can be brought out with excruciating pain. This leads into the tragedy of Sion, as he becomes a mindless zombie when not in battle, and can only reclaim part of his former self by constantly fighting and experiencing great pain.
      104. A quote referencing the champion Ahri, a Vastayan who has to feed on men like a Succubus to live. Ahri desperately wants to be loved and respected, but Swain believes it is better to be feared if you want respect.
      105. Refers to LeBlanc and the Black Rose, obviously some rose symbolism in this quote, but it is also one of multiple quotes that lead people to suspect that despite being enemies, LeBlanc and Swain are intimate.
      106. Also refers to LeBlanc, a bit more hostile, one of multiple quotes in which Swain insinuates he is winning his proxy war against LeBlanc.
      107. These two quotes are spliced together, generic quotes that play when killing an enemy champion.
      108. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
      109. Generic quote, joke quote and a reference to pre-rework Swain.
      110. Generic quote, may be referring to some kind of offering he has to make to retain his power and control over Raum. It may also be referring to an offering to the Wolf, a symbol of worship in Noxus and one half of Kindred. Looks like Swain’s religious.
      111. Generic quote, plays during gameplay in LoL.
Anyways, hope this helps even though it’s been months and you’ve probably already done your own digging. I would still recommend checking out Swain’s wiki page, any of the stories he’s involved in on the League Universe page, and even some of his new interactions from Legends of Runeterra. Cheers, and welcome to the community!

Noxus is the most accepting of all the nations, and the reason behind it is fairly simple: the strong rule. Noxians impose what they can and accept what they must, and all are equal in that regard. Should LeBlanc kill Swain, as far as Noxians are concerned, she was right to do so.
I don't know if you have ever played Morrowind, but they have roughly the same mindset as House Telvani.
