In response to your 9-year-old question... she ate peanut butter and banana pancakes that were poisoned by The Satin Slayer (Alexander Cambias, Zach's father who was going around murdering the women of Fusion) which were ultimately meant for Babe. This caused one of the biggest controversies in AMC history... Dixie came back from the dead and barely lasted 2 years on the show just to be killed off, again... especially with a death like this... by posioned pancakes of all things. Fans sent pancake boxes to ABC in protest (I was tempted to do so myself).
Yes, Dixie died in 1997. But Dr. David Haywood brought her back to life in 2011. There is a big chance that her body was frozen. Dr. Haywood unfroze her and brought her back to life, before All My Children ended in 2011.

Have not watched AMC since the 90s but I like Dixie character. They killed her off from eating poisoned pancakes? Give me a break!
The poisoned pancakes caused her to have tachycardia which led to a heart attack. It's genius actually.
