Outstanding! What a creative idea. I love both Rad and paperboy but never thought of anything like this . Truly a great idea . Did you see Rad in the movies this past year? They had a one night only showing for "RAD day" It was on march 21st. I hope they do it every year it was so fun . people came to the theater in their jerseys and t shirts. Paperboy is something Id love to own but like you said they are 4K . Perhaps making my own would be a good solution. I was hoping arcade1up would make one but it seems like all they want to do is pac man.
9-18? We have the same Birthday, plus 4 years for me. Happy Birthday!!! I love Rad and sadly missed the limited 4k release. Thankfully I could purchase it on Amazon video. I also share the same last name as the town they live in in the movie. I always thought that was amazing as a kid. Love your videos. Hope the downside of the hill treats you well 🤣
I gotta say, I haven't played paperboy in probably 35+ years. Those graphics are actually pretty great. Not sure if that would be considered an isometric perspective but it aged well regardless. Blown away with this build. Every time you post a new build they just get better and more elaborate. Also happy birthday. I'll be 45 in a couple months and you're right its a number. When I turned 40 it was just another day.
It's definitely not an arcade cabinet I come across too often, I can't even think of the last bar cade style place I saw that had one, so I'm not shocked many people haven't had an opportunity to play one in such a long time. Graphically it's really cool, lots of great sprites and things on screen moving and mixing up to keep things interesting. They did a great job on this game design back in the day.
Think I saw Rad when I was a kid but it’s long overdue for a rewatch. Awesome cab, never apologize for being you and doing things your own way. Happy birthday sir!!
Favorite film of all time. It came out in theaters when I was a small child, so I never got to see it in theaters… until they recently brought it back for one night only. It was amazing being able to see it on the big screen.
Definitely rhe Radest Paperboy I have ever seen! What an awesome idea! It looks awesome and all the little details are perfect! I am absolutely blown away by this build! Great stuff Doug!
I love Rad watched it in the movie theatre when I was a kid. I though it was the coolest movie. I immediately asked my mom for a BMX bike then I modded it. Love the video the cab looks dope!!!
Great job on your Paperboy… even a arcade collector has to be impressed with this build. Finding a working med-res monitor for an original is tough. Good for you!
yeah and those medium-res monitors also fetch a pretty penny if you can find someone to part with them. I just don't see the need to spend tons and tons of money just to be a purist.
That is an AWESOME build. Just. WOW!! Rad is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I have a burned vhs to dvd copy I pretty much wore out. Now I have it digitally on Vudu. I do have to admit out of all the arcade builds I've seen this has to be the best one so far. Great job!!
Rad was my childhood favorite!friend and I used to watch after school daily until my copy went all snowy...still get the soundtrack stuck in head often lol
Love the custom builds. I do builds very similar. I did an x-men Konami cab restore but used a unico 26 and a mini pc. It looks amazing. Workin currenty on a midway sport station cab that will have a unico and pc. You can’t even tell the difference. Saves me $$$ and looks brand spanking new
I totally agree, when you use quality components like you mentioned, it's such a no brainer. One can make their own machine for a fraction of the cost and it is often times more bullet proof than one of the originals being refurbished.
You always make the coolest stuff Cooltoy. Love your style dude. Combining RAD elements on a Paperboy is a no brainer and adds such a personal, one-of-a-kind touch. Also HBD!
Happy 40th Bday Doug! I saw the RiffTrax Live of RAD in theatres last year and had a blast. Such a classic movie. Love what you did here. Always amazing what concepts and designs you come up with. Enjoy your new machine!
absolutely unreal, you've blown my mind! paperboy is one of my all-time favorites as is Rad (and bike freestyle in general for that matter), so this is perfect. well done! and putting stuff like super hang-on with it is like a dream cab. i like that you just did it however you wanted and think that's the way to go, after all, it's YOUR machine. looks great! i think the newspapers near the screen are a good idea in theory but would get distracting, so i'd love to know what you eventually decide. happy birthday!
So far the newspapers overlapping the screen hasn't bothered me much. I love the look of the bezel when the machine is off for certain. Glad you liked the build 👍
I never loved Paperboy but I enjoyed playing it when I did in the arcades but it was never my go to game. My wife loves Paperboy though and wants me to get an A1UP that has it on there. As for the movie RAD, if it wasn't for a childhood friend, I would've never known about or seen it. It is cheesy 80s goodness though. Really love your build man and great way to combine your two childhood loves, it really works together! Since its a PC in there, you should go ahead and add the option to play the RAD movie on there and/or the RAD trailer. You may never watch it that way but it would go with the theme for sure! Happy Birthday man. Love the content, keep it up!
So freaking cool brother! Happy Birthday - shoutout to all my fellow 40 something retro gamers 🎉 The purist can kick rocks, haha. Looks stellar in the space, solid work!
Sadly the problem with making more would be finding handlebars to use for controls. That's the biggest rarity in a Paperboy arcade machine. No one reproduces them, and it's why the arcade machines fetch such ridiculously high prices these days. If someone like Glen at GRS could make a paperboy yoke like he did with Star Wars then it would be feasible to make more paperboy cabinets.
I haven't, I did send him a suggestion to make some paperboy controls as there is definitely a market for them. But I don't know what his plans are in the future for making new stuff such as that.
thanks for the birthday wishes, burgertime's cabinet shape was always something I thought was really cool, it will be awesome for you once you complete that project!
that's a hell of a birthday present, haha. I'm way more used to paperboy on home consoles, but that custom arcade is dare I say, rad? also cool it's a multi featuring some other similarly-compatible games on there, too cool!!
I hear you, I definitely played Paperboy 2 on the Sega way more than the actual Arcade game. Most times I came across a Paperboy arcade in the wild it had an out of order sign on it.
I think Glen needs to make one as well. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult since he could reuse a lot of the components from his existing Star Wars yoke.
That's cool man, I beat paperboy on the NES. Never played the actual arcade version but you've got a nice lookin' one. Some day I should check out that Rad movie
That cabinet is dope man! Great attention to detail and nice custom touches! Yeah the Rad movie is pretty cool though cheesy. lol Speaking of which I own two 20" 80's Diamondback Vipers. You killed it with the artwork! Building a replica Cru bike is definitely high on my list of things to do next.
