I just watched it last night and I LOVED it. Cynthia and Ariana's voices were STUNNING. As was the cinematography. The movie looked like you could eat it it was so colorful.
I feel like I’m the only person in the world that loves this book. In fact it’s my favorite book of all time. I think it’s incredibly smart and intellectual and it’s littered with philosophical questions about the human condition. However, I understand it’s not for everyone.
I feel the same way! I’ve actually read the book 3 times and it is easier to understand each time. The first time I read it, I was in high school and was not intellectually ready to fully appreciate it! It’s so complex and enlightening in a sense. Glad I’m not the only one that enjoys it!
@@aaronmarshall5628 oh my God, the same thing happened to me. I already in high school because at the time I was into the musical. And I hated it. I reread it as an adult and I had a totally different experience. I read it four times this year alone. For whatever reason, I just like the musical now
Honestly? Happy to hear they pulled from both the book and musical since I love both for their different tones and ideas. I can’t wait to go see the film, I saw the original cast on Broadway and was brought to tears ❤ I know it won’t be as emotional for me, but it’ll be great non the less Edit: I think the reason we spend as much time as we do in the Philosophy Club was to really cement the way talking animals are treated like commodities and slaves, which Elphaba could in ways relate to for being looked down on! It feels out of place, but it enhances the core theme and Elphabas reasonings for caring so much about their plight
@@WhytheBookWins It’s been awhile since I’ve read the book! Fantasy reader/writer here! I loved the Wicked book. I remember binging it over a weekend with my parents in a cabin and had a great time. I like politics in fantasy, so I really enjoyed that part. I like the characters and the depth and subtlety I found in it. That being said, I liked the Wicked musical too and the plot changes it made to suit the format. I was in high school when the OBC dropped and Defying Gravity was sung at my graduation ceremony.
Thanks for commenting! Since you like fantasy and politics within fantasy, that makes sense you enjoyed the book more than I did. I'm glad you liked the movie too 😊 Defying Gravity is such an amazing song!
I love LOVE this book!!! ❤ I actually enjoyed all 4 books. I love the darkness of the book. It's an adult book. I think its way better then the play story. Most things are Disney-fied. I prefer the real issues in the book.
There is a lot in this movie that was in the book not in the play and so on and this book and play are taking place in the judy garland timeline and universe the judy garland storyline is set up at the opening of the movie it’s in all the trailers and promos and all I’m saying is they had the perfect balance of all 3
Going to watch the movie later on today I haven’t watched the musical or read the book 💀 this is the first book vs movie I haven’t consumed either source material only thing I know it’s part of the Wizard of Oz world
I loved all 3, lbs! The movie definitely wins, then the musical, then book. I am a fantasy reader so I really liked the book, read it a couple of times but the movie was amazing
Never read the book. Not a fantasy fan. I prefer mystery and suspense. I still thought it was very obvious that at Jeff Goldblum’s character was her father. The moves alone….
I just saw the movie this morning! I loved it so much, which is kinda funny since I wasn't a huge fan of the stage musical. I never got a chance to see it on stage, just a slime tutorial or two, so might have been part of it. I thought the pacing might have been a little fast for me on stage, mainly the relationship side of things. The movie didn't have that issue for me since it felt like the characters could actually breathe. Can't wait for part 2!
I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, the third was kinda dull, but then the fourth book was great. I'd say the second book Son of a Witch is my favorite (my screenname should give that away lol). I'm so excited for the movie.
Oh nice haha, since I have a hard time getting into fantasy I doubt I'll read the others but now you gave me curious! I'll have to read online what happens in the next books lol.
Thank you so much for this! I've always loved all things Wizard of Oz, so, when this book came out, I immediately bought it. I got some of the ay through and I just couldn't do it anymore. "Repulsed" might be too strong of a word, but it was the opposite of the whimsy and fun. So that made me hesitant about the musical, but you broke it down and showed me it's not a literal adaptation hahaha 😅 Thank you for what you do!🫡
@@WhytheBookWinsslight correction. The first book actually takes the entire 14 books by Baum into account (as do the following 3 books) plus parts of the 1939 movie
It’s like this is the thing if the movie got an r rated movie and it was closer to Sweeney Todd devils carnival repo the genetic opera on that level where they could go closer to the book and keep it a musical and have smaller ties to the play and go way closer to the original wizard of oz book and the wicked book it would be nice if John made an R rated cut while filming this cut that is pg
But that's the whole point.. her being green shouldnt be a big deal in this weird fantasy world, and yet people act wnd behave like it is.... In the real world, some people still have this sort of reaction to people of different races and this isnt a fantasy. Thats the weird point the show and the movie are trying to get at.
I’m vary confouse because ain’t she have a sister that was a which then a house selling her then her evil sister came who is her sister if the girl in the wheel chair not a which I’m so confused
The girl in the wheelchair is her sister. In the book she isn't in a wheelchair though, instead she is born without arms. But yeah, this character is the one that Dorothy's house falls on and she dies.
If you reallllllllly dislike fantasy...and you know that as a bias. WHY devote so much time and effort into producing soooo much video about Wicked? Hmmm.... to make money from ads since this is the hot movie right now.. Got it. And you haven't seen the musical. Even though the movie is a movie OF the musical. And the musical is primarily an adaptation of the 1939 movie with very little of the Maguire novel.. so.. yeah. I stopped watching your review.
When she is born in the book at first they can't agree on if she is a boy or girl but then realize there was something on her down there that made them think it was a p3nis when it really wasn't. But a rumor is kind of started that she it's a hermaphrodite.
@WhytheBookWins it has been over a decade since I read the novel, but it seems I remember it implying it several times in the novel, especially during the lovemaking scene. I wondered about it because in some cultures hermaphrodites were often seen as holy or divine or possessing magical powers. In Ringu, for instance, Sadako is also a hermaphrodite. Strangely, of all the things in Wicked this is the aspect of her character that stayed with me longest.
@@falgalhutkinsmarzcal3962 I think you are right about the love scene, I forgot about that but I do think it was implied in that section as well. But you make a good point as to why Maguire includes that if they were seen as having powers or being extra special in certain ways.
@@WhytheBookWins thanks for your time. I appreciate your videos and your enthusiasm. I might need to reread the novel. Actually, now that I think about it I might have read it two decades ago. I am sooo old...

It combines things from the first Oz book as well as the 1930's movie.
