The dvd drive on my Dell Optiplex 780 SFF just failed and the process to replace it took less time that it did to take the pc out of the computer desk and remove all the connecting wires and not a single screwdriver was needed!
My 4700 with identical configration still works well, apart from the unbearably noisy fan. And that dvd-drive-won't-spin-up-during-booting problem bothers me as well. Instead of beating it, I found out that unfolding the top five categories in the bios then going back to "Boot Sequence" and exiting would usually solve it. Maybe I should try your way next time XD. My computer hates me anyhow. It seems that dell removed their stored sevice tags of some old models this year, I tried my tag and got the same message. X300SE was a pretty pointless card when it was new and now without hardware video decoding function, it's utterly useless, when compared to it's successor like X1300 or even 7200GS which is a worse card in regard to 3d performance but can accelerate video frame rate to an acceptable level, Quite useful when paired to an old CPU like P4 and watching youtube videos.
this computer was trying so hard to boot up. i have a 4700 myself, but it hasnt been used in 13 years. and nowadays, its just sitting under the desk collecting dust while our HP compaq 8100 hard drive is being tortured by windows 10.
9:49 okay, i have a funny ass story to tell. so you heard that whirring noise, correct? well, there was a time when i wanted to see "what would happen if i put a ps4 disc in the family HP compaq 8100". my dad switched it over to windows 10 since windows 10 came out about a year after he bough the computer, and the thing is practically toruring the hard drive. its slow and laggy, and is just.. shit. anyway, i put the ps4 disc in the computer, and waited about 10 seconds, nothing came up. so i waited about 10 more seconds, and nothing still didnt come up. i was about to take the disc out when OUT OF NOWHERE, i started hearing a whirring noise similar to this dell 4700, but it was much louder. i then remmembered my friend telling me about how when he was playing on his Ps2 slim, he heard a little scratching sound and then the door popped open and the disc flew out nearly taking his head off, and it cut off some of his hair. so i jumped under the desk and waited for it to stop, and it did. but that moment scared the shit out of me, because i thought the computer was either going to explode, or eject the disc at light speed LOL
I have one of these and the tower turns on is running but the screen is black/not displaying??? All the cords are attached and plugged in (I triple checked) and the screen is still black??? Please help 🙏
@@bradturner385 I took my computer in to the local computer repair guy and he fixed it pretty easy.. Something burned out in there, I guess but he just switched it out and fixed it for me. He charged me $100 tho
I have the Dimension 4700 and it wont even boot up anymore. The first time I tried, It showed "128 BIOS" (all i could remember from it) and then the second time I pressed the button, it just popped and shut off. I've never worked with Old computers before. My limit is 2015 and above.

It was his before mine, he downgraded to a Dimension 3000 that he destroyed. Had a Celeron.
If your goal is to recover photos, pull the drive, and put it in a external enclosure, or a known good system and clone it before you do anything else. Once the drive is cloned, you can recover the photos from the cloned drive and you would save yourself about a few hours of time.

Yeah, the drive is failing for sure. The grand total of bad sectors (thus far, it goes up half the time I scan it) reaches several megabytes. I made an attempt at cloning but it looked like it was going to take forever because it was tripping up on the (not yet marked) bad sectors... I could imagine cloning a drive of good health taking only a little while.
@@I430VX Spinrite is pricey but it does a good job of cleaning up drives, the down side is it can take upwards of 14 to 15 hours depending on the level of attention you choose.
