    Ocean plastic pollution is a massive environmental problem. Millions of tons of plastic waste enter the ocean every year, even plastic that goes in the trash can often ends up in the sea! This week we learn about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and look at the dangers ocean plastic poses to ocean animals. Plus, a few tips for you to reduce your own plastic use!

    Some experts also think that the plastic microbeads in face-washes contribute greatly to this pollution since it goes straight into the water system. So also consider switching to a more "natural" facewash that doesn't use these plastics.

    I'm living in the UK, and we're pretty bad for plastic, even though we recycle and re-use a lot. I went to Bangkok 3 months ago and was amazed by the amount of plastic they use for everything! If you get a soda in the street, they pour it in a starbucks like plastic cut, with a plastic straw AND in addition to that put the whole thing in a tiny plastic bag with a handle to carry it around. like waaaay to much.

  • @dorian3260
    @dorian3260 7 лет назад +2

    Recycling is a great idea, but we all need to be better informed on what and how to recycle. I used to work for a large aerospace company. It used to break my heart to find a container in a copy room filled halfway with clean white paper, which is worth big bucks, contaminated with two or three discarded lunches. When recycling companies buy paper, they give it a grade. If food and trash is mixed, the value depreciates. We should also lobby our government representatives to give the consumer more options, like glass instead of plastic. Thanks for posting this!

    the issue is most of us use plastic bags for throwing out our organic waste, it keeps our waste confined to some level, but there are still leaks.
    I was put on a pilot to test a new product, Bagez a garbage bag holder. it allows me to secure any size garbage bag in my garbage bins. garbage bags are a better thicker plastic, and if used according to what your local waste facility can sort and separate, it will help in recapture of material to wards new products rather than end up in landfills. with Bagez i have been able to use just 1 bag to hold our family waste, and add more if needed. i buy my own bags and even use it when i'm outdoors. great product, helps reduce plastics are ending up in the dump, and i don't have to worry about dirty bins.

    Recycling and composting are now mandatory where I live, and I hate plastic packaging anyway, so I've never been very wasteful in that regard. I get nearly everything except food and clothing from Amazon, so that's not an issue. Honestly, it's not that hard to be environmentally friendly. It doesn't cost a lot of money or time (in fact, it often saves both), and it's fun to innovate. I don't mean to preach, but I don't understand why so many people have such a problem with it. We can't suddenly stop impacting the Earth, but we can do our part. Just do what you can, it's not hard.

I've switched to soap bars from bottled shower gels etc. Wooden toothbrushes for all the family (and gave as gifts to friends for xmas), no more makeup wipes - we are using a cloth and coconut oil now, and of course, full on recycling focus in the home.

    If the shops didn't sell "green" veg/fruit bags for damn 80 cents a piece - i would use them.
    The paper bags also cost up to 10 times more.
    Meats/dairy etc need to be properly packed (gas, sterile) - so cant avoid it there.
    Glass bottles are also quite a bit more costly and available in small volumes.
    Price is the problem here - until something changes - plastic problem remains.

    There has long been technology for processing contaminated (unwashed), non-sorted plastic garbage into marketable products: euro-pallets, garbage cans and wine boxes, car bumpers, floating berths, boats, road plastic fences. You can not deceive - getting fuel is expensive and harmful!

      Plastic is great of its uses. But far too harmful for the planet. Especially for one time use. Just plastic over plastic and even more, and most of it is not recycled, just new plastic. Which means more and more and more. We got to move back to our old ways. It doesnt need to be as comfortable for us humans. But hey, like humanity will learn....

    Don't donate clothes randomly. Most of it gets turned away because it invalidates local clothing production where it's distributed. It ends up in the ocean that way.
    Only donate clothing to for local uses, when you know there's a need without insane transport costs and a foreign nation that doesn't want it.

    I live in a very popular tourist town on the shores of California. This plastic straw pollution idea is total B.S.! I see 100 times more cigarette butts laying around the streets and beach than plastic straws. What is really sickening is seeing this kind of media b.s. while people are ignorant to the effects of the Fukashima disaster. I have walked this beach almost daily for the last 20 years. I have never seen anything more devastating than the effects of Fukashima. The first to go were the star fish. Then all the little animals that cling to the rocks. The summer followed with millions of birds invading the area looking for food. Then came more whales than I have ever seen here in my life. They die from starvation because there is no krill. The entire fishing industry impacted from Alaska to South America. The government is concerned about plastic straws? What a joke! You people who live inland have no idea the horror that has been laid upon us. Keep believing that plastic is destroying the environment as its already been destroyed and being destroyed because they haven't done squat about Fukashima. Its still burning into the ocean..

    The majority of the waste belongs to corporations, not costumers. Let's say every consumer committed to the steps listed above, the world will only be 10 % of where it needs to be in regards to waste.

    • @ohno2146

    • @MegaMruno
      @MegaMruno 7 лет назад +5

      I guess there's always a risk but I was thinking some kind of micro/molecular submarine that collects all the traces of plastics and disposes of them or breaks them up into something not harmful

      There is a fungus and a bacteria that can digest plastic.

    • @flax9999lp
      @flax9999lp 7 лет назад +17

      Well as far as i know there are certain plastics that can be digested by a certain type of microorganism bred for that specific purpose. It is possible, but the problem is just it would most likely never get rid of all the plastic. We just have to pull the brakes ASAP and really avoid plastic in everyday situations.

    Let's add another R. Maybe Redirect? In addition to the individual, aiming these messages at businesses, communities, and policies can have a much larger impact. For example, if an entire restaurant chain stopped using plastic straws - we'd be doing the ocean a tremendous favor.

    • @k.w.1459
      @k.w.1459 6 лет назад

      Mike Likes Science yes. Businesses needs to change but consumers are the huge link in the chain. If we “vote” with our wallets and refuse plastics as well as educate and inform and write legislation then corporations should theoretically change their ways. Btw, McDonald’s in UK just announced they are piloting a paper straw likely because of the petition for them to do so last year was launched. I definitely want that to take over world wide.

    Years ago many stores used to allow you to refill large pop bottles at grocery stores, but we are being so filled with terror on every front these days that it;s almost insane. I'm sure that saved many bottles from ending up where they shouldn't. Also, if you sell bottled water and pop on beaches, it will likely end up in the oceans too. Why not sell it in recyclable paper cups instead? If stores allowed people to refill bottles again but each refillable bottle would cost $50 and no other refillable containers would be permitted, that might help as well, provided no one sold this in regular bottles anymore. The more something costs, the less likely people will throw it into the ocean. the problem is that most of the food today that people purchase in stores (meat products etc.) also comes in plastic. It's a world where people are being literally ENCOURAGED to throw away as much garbage as possible. Seems like 50% of even the non food products today are wrapped in plastic and often even heavy plastic that takes up twice as much space as the product itself. Worse yet, that plastic is often so heavy and so thick that it can literally slice through the skin if not opened right.
    Seems that if you put more store products behind glass instead, and hire more clerks to monitor what each customer is taking and has put back, there might not be so much of a loss when you consider massive theft today even when items are wrapped in plastic. Stores might actually break even and employ millions more in the process, allowing millions more also money to purchase things. the computer trend to try to unemploy most of the world's people to save money has backfired in multiple ways and will continue to do so.

    Here in Europe my monthly garbage is maybe the same as MAYBE half a shoebox. It is so little that I don't even have a trash bin for non recycables and I just go directly to the big bin. We recycle literally everything and shopping bags are very very expensive so everyone uses cloth bags. I now use toothbrushes that are made from eco friendly products. Even the packaging is bio degradable and the box is from recycled paper. I thought I was really making big difference in our planet till I visited Asia and India. Unfortunately there people use plastic and aluminium for everything and they just throw them and they burn them at the landfills. There wasn't a single beach or forest that it wasn't full of plastic. Very very sad!
