Gudday Ian, Cottee's is definitely an Aussie company, set up in the 1920's by my great grandfather & his brother. It went on to become a big soft drink company, as well as making cordials & jams, etc. It was eventually bought out in the sixties by General Foods from the US, but it's still seen an an Australian brand. Schweppes then bought the formula for Cottee's Big Boy Lemonade - and that became Schweppes Lemonade.
1:10 - for those that don't know: 1. nasi goreng was an Indonesian dish that was huge (in Australia) during the 80's. Every 'how to cook' magazine, TV segment etc. had recipes for nasi goreng, hence the play on words 2. as an introduced species, Australia has a huge problem with rabbits. The Federal Govt. even built a 300 mile fence called 'the rabbit-proof fence' to keep rabbits out of pristine farmland Great commercial though !!
Context is everything for the corn ad (Marge, marge, the rains are ‘ere). That was released during the millennium drought that lasted for 13 years (1997-2010). We’ve just had record breaking floods across the east coast of Australia but back then we barely saw a drop of rain fall. My niece was 7 years old before she ever saw rain. And she was scared sh*itless when she was in the car with her mum and she saw real rain for the first time. Australia is a land of extremes. Including the harsh sun. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time travelling south east Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia) and I can apply sunscreen once and stay out all day without getting burned. Here in Oz I can only go 2 hours maximum, even with sunscreen, before I burn to a crisp. Australia is a great place to live. So much space and natural beauty. But the environment is harsh. You have to be prepared.

Emporer Nasi Goreng! Everyone loved this ad. Nasi Goreng, of course, is a type of Asian fried rice dish - Indonesian I think. Fun Fact: Bryce Courtney, one of Australia's greatest novelists (South African immigrant) invented Louie the fly when he was in his 20's and working in advertising. Bryce Courtney's most famous book was 'The Power of One', roughly autobiographical novel of his early life in South Africa. It was a best-seller, translated into 18 languages and has sold 8 million copies, and made into a movie.
@Ian . Fun Fact - the original 'ma nan a na' song appeared in a 1960's European adult movie. It then showed up in the Muppets tv show 20 odd years later, re invented as the kids song that we all know so well today...🤷♂️😅
the old bloke on the bike is Alf Stewart, a character in Home and Away, a very popular TV "soap" i guess, and he's usually pretty grumpy in the show too, also Thorpey is Ian Thorpe, one of our legendary swimmers, won multiple Olympic golds and held a few world records.
Great, now I have the Cottee's Cordial song stuck in my head. "My Dad picks the fruit, that goes to Cottee's, that makes the cordial, that I like best!"
Ah the memories,, and check out the ‘Toyota BUGGER’ ad,, the ‘no milk today’ milk ad,, the ‘Rhonda and ketut’ car insurance ad (this become an ad mini series!!),, and ‘Not happy Jan ‘ old phone book ad! Funny how you’ll still hear people today say ‘Not happy Jan! ‘ lol Thanks for sharing 😎😎
'The Emperor Nasi Goreng' is one of my favourite ads. Nasi goreng is a famous Asian dish, not an emperor 😂 As for sunscreen, Australia has the world's highest skin cancer rate 😏 so yep, you need to slather it on regularly in summer!
@@vpdownunder9032 grew up there myself, I still sometimes get caught out by it, when I’m down there, on those very mild, low 20’s summer days, that burn you to a crisp 🤣
Beach cricket is one of the national sports of Australia. Cordial = non fizzy soft drink. You buy a 2 litre bottle of concentrate, and mix it at a ratio of about 1:5 with (chilled)water. Saves bringing home 12 litres a week. They've have the same jingle for as long as l can remember. Louie the fly ads have been a part of Mortein forever. Some of these ads are parts of a series of ads that go on for years, rather like the Australia Day lamb ads. You might check out other ads for the companies mentioned.
I love the Ultratune ad in which mum in the front seat talks about an annoying noise the car was making that they fixed. All through the ad the kids are in the back squabbling. She finishes by saying the annoying noise was gone...
If you ever want to find an Aussie in a crowd in another country all you gotta do is say "1300" and they'll finish the rest, That number is literally my passcode to my phone as its engrained into every Aussie
There’s one ad (or a series of ads) you should probably have a look at is the old TAC ads. Any Aussie who grew up with those ads will know how bloody brutal those things were.
There's also a meme of the reading writing hotline phone jingle. A horror film set in Australia, the killer is stalking the house for their victim, and they've hidden, so the killer goes "1300 6555" and then the hiding victim yells "oh six" Also Cordial is pronounced, Cor-dee-all, not like Cord-yall
That Mortein, auto-spray insect killer really works. We came home from a long weekend 10 years ago to find spiderwebs all throughout the living room, from ceiling to floor, wall to wall, with hundreds of baby spiders making it their home. Since then, we started using this auto-spray, and now the only spider I see inside the house is a dead one. It's brilliant. And this is Australia. The fuckers are everywhere.
The Cottees ad from the 80s or 90s was where the tune in the background came from. Worth watching as it gives it more context. SPC is another one. There's so many good old aussie ad's. Car add where the owner said " come on down Parramatta Road and Let Me Do It Right FOR YOU!" LOL
1:22 One thing I never picked up on as a kid is that "nasi goreng" isn't even Chinese *or* a person - it's a rice dish from Indonesia/Malaysia, which literally means "fried rice".

Hi. a bit late to comment, but @ (roughly 3:00) 'Snoop Dog' in the ad was not Snoop Dog at all, but a look-alike actor. He did such a convincing job for the advertising company and their client that the advertisement had to be modified with a subtitled disclaimer saying it was just an actor playing the role.
From my memory, I think the one of the mail opening vids last year, you had a glass bottle of cordial that broke covering everything in a sticky mess. Bickford's raspberry I think. Cordial is very popular here. Just an easy way to make a cool drink in the summer. It basically a concentrate flavour, almost a syrup, you add to water.

The reading writing hotline is a great service to help adults with literacy issues - the number has remained the same for at least a decade and just about everyone in Australia could sing that line.
Cordial? That's simply a heavy fruit syrup to which you just add water! Very refreshing - but red and green cordial are definitely NOT something I would ever give to a mob of kids - they'd go bananas within seconds of it reaching their stomachs!! By the way, if you are making any more of these fabulous trips down advertising memory lane, for goodness sake make sure you add "NOT HAPPY JAN!" I'm shocked you missed that one! But thanks for the 'rabbits', my all-time favourite!!

Menu Log you are correct is a delivery service just like UberEats etc. At the start of the advert, which was specially shot for the NRL State of Origin series, the first guy climbing out of bed is NSW player Mitchell Pearce, next, after Snoop, the big man eating his breakfast at the table is Greg Inglis, NRL Maroons legend. Ian if you haven't you need to watch his highlights video on Ytube. Greg is now retired, he played for Australia, Queensland and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Obviously he was as brilliant, very athletic and a physically strong player, who scored many tries for Queensland.
Nasi Goreng, is an indonesian rice dish. The rabbit proof fence runs across a lot of australia, in the back blocks. There is an ad for an unbreakable ute, which falls over a cliff, then is found in the surf, on it's wheels, the guy gets the keys out of his pocket and drives it away. The old guy in the snickers ad, is in the soaps.

i had a mate at school who was from texas. she came to school one day with a water bottle full of cordial and couldn't stop raving about it! it was so cute! "oh my god guys, this is so frickin good, we just have cool aid in texas!" lol!
also, does anyone else remember, "my mum, picks my bum, to get the goodies! to make the cordial that I like best!" or was that just me and my feral friends lol?
Probably just u
Emporer Nasi Goreng! Everyone loved this ad. Nasi Goreng, of course, is a type of Asian fried rice dish - Indonesian I think.
Fun Fact: Bryce Courtney, one of Australia's greatest novelists (South African immigrant) invented Louie the fly when he was in his 20's and working in advertising. Bryce Courtney's most famous book was 'The Power of One', roughly autobiographical novel of his early life in South Africa. It was a best-seller, translated into 18 languages and has sold 8 million copies, and made into a movie.
@Ian
.
Fun Fact - the original 'ma nan a na' song appeared in a 1960's European adult movie.
It then showed up in the Muppets tv show 20 odd years later, re invented as the kids song that we all know so well today...🤷♂️😅
Mortein ads were iconic, there were even petitions at one point to save or kill off the main fly in them 😂
I remember Paul Hogan doing Winfield cigarette adds in the 70s.."anyhow...have a Winfield "..cheers I Rocker🍺🍺🍻
A lot of Australian ads are tongue-in-cheek but it brings back good memories
So snoop dog makes an ad for the local market and still manages to to say Shrimp on the Barbie the absolute Flog.
the old bloke on the bike is Alf Stewart, a character in Home and Away, a very popular TV "soap" i guess, and he's usually pretty grumpy in the show too, also Thorpey is Ian Thorpe, one of our legendary swimmers, won multiple Olympic golds and held a few world records.
Great, now I have the Cottee's
Cordial song stuck in my head. "My Dad picks the fruit, that goes to Cottee's, that makes the cordial, that I like best!"
Ah the memories,, and check out the ‘Toyota BUGGER’ ad,, the ‘no milk today’ milk ad,, the ‘Rhonda and ketut’ car insurance ad (this become an ad mini series!!),,
and ‘Not happy Jan ‘ old phone book ad!
Funny how you’ll still hear people today say ‘Not happy Jan! ‘ lol
Thanks for sharing 😎😎

'The Emperor Nasi Goreng' is one of my favourite ads. Nasi goreng is a famous Asian dish, not an emperor 😂 As for sunscreen, Australia has the world's highest skin cancer rate 😏 so yep, you need to slather it on regularly in summer!
6 minutes in some states during summer. 6 minutes is ALL it takes to get sunburnt!
Nasi Goreng is Fried Rice. Nasi is RICE and Goreng is FRIED
Tassie is actually the worst place for sunburn, believe it or not!
@@timjohnun4297 Living here in Tas I can confirm that lol.
@@vpdownunder9032 grew up there myself, I still sometimes get caught out by it, when I’m down there, on those very mild, low 20’s summer days, that burn you to a crisp 🤣
Beach cricket is one of the national sports of Australia. It’s also hugely popular around the world wherever cricket is played, and is of course closely related to backyard cricket, street cricket, gully cricket in India, etc. Some of my fondest memories of growing up in NZ are playing beach, backyard and street cricket for hours, especially on holidays.
Not Happy Jan became a catch phrase, started in a commercial many years ago. I think for the yellow pages phone book.

Ha, just did it then!
There’s one ad (or a series of ads) you should probably have a look at is the old TAC ads. Any Aussie who grew up with those ads will know how bloody brutal those things were.
There's also a meme of the reading writing hotline phone jingle. A horror film set in Australia, the killer is stalking the house for their victim, and they've hidden, so the killer goes "1300 6555" and then the hiding victim yells "oh six"
Also Cordial is pronounced, Cor-dee-all, not like Cord-yall
That Mortein, auto-spray insect killer really works. We came home from a long weekend 10 years ago to find spiderwebs all throughout the living room, from ceiling to floor, wall to wall, with hundreds of baby spiders making it their home. Since then, we started using this auto-spray, and now the only spider I see inside the house is a dead one. It's brilliant. And this is Australia. The fuckers are everywhere.
Louie the Fly has been in Mortein ads since I was a kid and I’m 61. Still love those ads.
My daughters are 28 and 30 and still remember the reading and writing hotline from when they we’re about 10 ish..!!! 😊
Hi Ian my favourite ad was the great Wall of China, Have a great day, keep up the good work 👍 from Dave in Australia.
Wow these brings back great memories growing up with these ads
1:22 One thing I never picked up on as a kid is that "nasi goreng" isn't even Chinese *or* a person - it's a rice dish from Indonesia/Malaysia, which literally means "fried rice".
These bring back memories. Another jingle ad 'Don't wait to be told - you need Palmolive Gold!' lol. The AMMI insurance ads were very funny too
Ian Thorpe is a former Olympic swimmer who’s won multiple gold medals and broke many world records.
Gday Ian , its was great seeing thee old ads again , the Mortine ad featuring loui the fly is Australias longest running ad. loui the fly was created back in the late 60's. cheers mate
LOVE the Great Wall of China ad. It's brilliant. There are a bunch of Oak milk ads that are hilarious. (they're about being Hungry thirsty)
I'm 53 and still a Cottees kid ;)
I have the automatic bug spray and it works quite well. I barely see any bugs inside.
Cor..Dee..All is how us Aussies pronounce it 😂👌😂 love your channel Mate 👍
Hi. a bit late to comment, but @ (roughly 3:00) 'Snoop Dog' in the ad was not Snoop Dog at all, but a look-alike actor. He did such a convincing job for the advertising company and their client that the advertisement had to be modified with a subtitled disclaimer saying it was just an actor playing the role.
Emperor Nasi Goreng. ><
Nasi Goreng = Malaysian fried rice. Literally "rice fried"
Funny thing is the reading writing hotline is the only phone number all of us remember off by heart even if we forgot our own
🔹️ 8:19 Cordial. Like Kool-aid or Punch, sugar flavored concentrated drinks, just add chilled water
🔹️ BTW, Cordial is a concentrated liquid, not a powder like Kool-aid
I love your content! Thank you 🙏
YES, those battery operated fly dispensers do most definitely work. There are other brands too
From my memory, I think the one of the mail opening vids last year, you had a glass bottle of cordial that broke covering everything in a sticky mess. Bickford's raspberry I think. Cordial is very popular here. Just an easy way to make a cool drink in the summer. It basically a concentrate flavour, almost a syrup, you add to water.
Bickfords is syrup not cordial
@@DpMario11 nxt to all the other cordials. Counts as cordial to e'one I know
@@DpMario11 Syrup is what a cordial is. It goes back a couple of centuries.
the rabbit comercial many people mocked that for years its a classic
I always get the cottee's song stuck in my head "my dad picked the fruit, to take to cottees, to make the cordial, that I like best"
Mate! You missed the LEGENDARY ones. No.1 and finest the "I like aeroplane jelly" song, and runner up "We're happy little vegemites. I nearly died when I first heard No.1 at breakfast 53 years ago as a New Australian migrant. I wondered what planet I was on! Lol.
A blast from your past:

Everyone used to quote the old lady in the Paul's Milk commercial. And heaps of people still quote the Reading and Writing hotline ad.
The old guy in the snickers ad is an Australian staple on TV with his crazy Australian slang. His name is Ray Meagher and he's the the TV show Home and Away since 1988 to present day
Menulog is like Uber eats
The reading writing hotline is a great service to help adults with literacy issues - the number has remained the same for at least a decade and just about everyone in Australia could sing that line.
@godamid i think he was only interested in the jingle not what it does
I haven’t lived in Australia for twenty years and haven’t heard that ad in that long… and I could sing along perfectly.
Love the corn drought add👍
Looie the fly has been an Aussie fav for many many years .
We had the automatic insect spray and we Knew when it was out of spray , the flies came back
The menu log ad I think the company is called Just Eat everywhere else in the world, the US has similar ads for it but obviously with different lyrics
We have doordash and uber in Australia too, but deliveroo, menulog and ozfoodhunter are Australian
As a 5 year old I use to love lime cordial and I started making my own mum was like where'd all the cordial go I didn't know that you were meant to add water, all that sugar tasted so good as a 5 year old
you should see the "not happy jan" yellow pages ad. its iconic and is part of pop culture now.
