@@geraldford6409 Thanks for your reply. So have you had any of the audio drop out, hdmi switching, etc. issues that many have complained about? Yamaha actually announced the RX-A2A RX-A4A, and RX-A6A back in January 2020 at CES so they are already a year behind (probably because of covid-19 or the Panasonic Chip 120hz issues).
@Audiovont I really do think they must have delayed the release partially because of the Panasonic chip problem, but since the RX-A2A came out and it still says "4K120AB and 8K60B are available via a future update" it does give me hope that with this LONG delay we will have most of the 2020 120hz bugs gone, and once they finally release everything they will start working on any new 2021 product compatibility (HDTV). Nice review, resolving the Apple TV issue is some first class reviewer ship. I would of liked a photo with the lid off, and a few words about the amplifier technology and the DAC.
I know, right! - I think manufacturers are missing a golden opportunity to create a perception of quality by using these cheap knobs... I mean would it kill them to use a $5 metal knob with rubber trim? - The knob is the ONE place where the customer actually touches the unit. The ONE place! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that this is the place to put a couple of bucks! It would subconsciously make the user think that the unit is of high quality - I just don't get their thinking.
Agreed they pooched the screw with that one- product design 101= address consumer touchpoints, literally Make the dials feel high quality. Can still make them plastic to meet consumer costs, but thicker and beefier with no wobble Big center Volume dial is OK< but could be beefed up, and just omit the right selector/push dial and do touch sensitive arrows and/or a trackpad-like scroll touch strip for up/down or left/right scrolling through options
I have the previous generation from Costco and I’m very happy with mine. Can’t say I’m happy with the new front panel design either on this one. A bit too minimalist for me. But it’s nice to have easy web access to get into the weeds.
I think zones are going to go extinct, replaced by a dedicated device for each room or zone. That audio-send to the headphones is a really a key feature, allowing someone to use the main theater room in total silence while the rest of household enjoys peace and quiet. That's huge, especially for teenagers gaming late at night, but gaming headphones are also headsets, and who knows if such a receiver feature allows microphone passthrough. A gamer would likely use the bluetooth direct from the console to ensure lo latency two way chat. But as someone who used bluetooth headphones to watch movies on an LG tv from 2016 It's a really good feature to have, even if* it doesn't have microphone support.

I just purchased this unit and waiting for it to ship. My question is if it automatically switches from Atmos to 7.1 would you have to physically move those speakers from high to behind everytime it does this?
@@virgelboyd1792 No, you would actually have the 9 speakers set up (7 base, 2 height). The receiver would automatically do the rest. This amp will only power 7 speakers at a time.
I know this is two years old but found this looking for reviews as I am considering this unit. All that said: I have to laugh. “Solid entry point for someone looking to get their feet wet in the world of home theater.” Apparently I’m failing at life because I’ve been rocking a home theater for more than 2 decades and I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $600 on an AVR. In fact I’ve spent a lot less. Of course: I don’t have bags of money and a ‘golden’ ear so maybe I’m too much a pleb to even begin to understand the nuances of ‘fi-hi-fi’. 😅
I hear ya. Just got mine today, and I’m lost. Watching everything on it that I can before I hook it up next weekend. I’m just looking to hook up my VERY old Boss 901’s, and 301’s to it. I like the integrated EQ though.
A2A is almost the same as V6A this time. A4A is supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks according to a Yamaha insider. Got a peek of the spec sheet too. A4A and above have better DACs (and room correction as usual). If those specs don't change A4A and above will be better than their older counterparts.

A question. In Bi-Amp mode, does the RX-V6A allow separate volume adjustment for the two front speaker inputs (Low and Bass), or would the only way to adjust volumes be via the equalizer? Thanks.

@@anonimushbosh I understand he replied that there are no separate volume controls for the frequency paths. When I asked the question, I already suspected that, since the volumes are delivered to the equalizer. I just asked the question to confirm.
@9:16 - can you explain why that is? My HT speakers are rated @ 6 ohm - should I not set the receiver to match? [edit] - Just found your article that speaks to this. I get it, liability - and - it starves your speakers of power. Here's the odd thing though - I own this amp (Or the Costco TSR-700 version of it anyway) - and I get MORE volume when set to 6ohm, at the same "volume setting" than I do at 8ohm. Is that not odd?
No thats not odd. Thats the way it works. Your supposed to switch it to match your speakers. Thats why that setting is there. I have always done it and it always improves the sound quality.
Just bought it today and I am planning to use this unit as a 3.1 channel for now. My speakers supports Bi-amp so what would be the ideal configuration in this scenario to maximize the power to obtain 100W @ 8ohms?
Hi. I have this receiver and I want to add an external amplifier to run my front channels. Do you have an amp recommendation and also tips on how to adjust it to balance with the rest of the channels being fed by the AVR?

I have the RX-V685. I guess the auto switching between 5.1.2 and 7.1 is new? sounds really good. I guess at the V685 I would have to recalibrate the whole setup again and switch everything manually in the menu before. What a large, flat, blank expanse on the front for such a small display. Nice thinking out the typical reciever box. Of course how it sounds and what it can drive is most important.
Agreed- better layout and look for non-techie buyers who just want 5.1/7.1 sound with maybe an overhead speaker pair. The old skool of thought with large number of buttons on the front, even if hidden behind a flip down panel, is just not a good way to go moving forward. Never been a fan of Yamaha's exterior looks. I know fans of Yamaha rave about their quality, but like cars, looks is a matter of taste even though it's what's inside that makes the difference.

Never mind. I just got a deal on this unit for $499. and it includes a free 3 year extended warranty to boot. Figure I can't go wrong for a measly $500. I was in need of a 7.1 with a second zone in my comupter designing office which has a lower level where I watch movies. The upper level is where I do computer design, modelling, illustration, and previsualization so that is where I do my 'listening' to straight music via two channel Focal speakers. This will do the job. I hope.

@@geraldford6409 Thanks for your reply. So have you had any of the audio drop out, hdmi switching, etc. issues that many have complained about? Do you have a newer unit with the newer/updated hardware? Also, off topic, but I'm reading up on the latest technology and have learned that optical outputs cannot carry the latest Dolby Atmos. Yamaha actually announced the RX-A2A RX-A4A, and RX-A6A back in January 2020 at CES so they are already a year behind (probably because of covid-19 or the Panasonic Chip 120hz issues).
Sean Hauer... Do you think that the new receivers for May 2021 already come with the problem of the 120hz chip solved?
@Audiovont I really do think they must have delayed the release partially because of the Panasonic chip problem, but since the RX-A2A came out and it still says "4K120AB and 8K60B are available via a future update" it does give me hope that with this LONG delay we will have most of the 2020 120hz bugs gone, and once they finally release everything they will start working on any new 2021 product compatibility (HDTV). Whew...I know I can't wait, if they don't bring out the RX-A6A this year I might be going to Denon, or Marantz...but I hope not.

I’m happy with my RX-A2070. At 1:08 the plastic dial it’s so cheap and awful...
RX-A3070 here and I totally agree with you.
It is cheap
Agreed they pooched the screw with that one- product design 101= address consumer touchpoints, literally
Make the dials feel high quality. Can still make them plastic to meet consumer costs, but thicker and beefier with no wobble
Big center Volume dial is OK< but could be beefed up, and just omit the right selector/push dial and do touch sensitive arrows and/or a trackpad-like scroll touch strip for up/down or left/right scrolling through options
I have the previous generation from Costco and I’m very happy with mine. Can’t say I’m happy with the new front panel design either on this one. A bit too minimalist for me. But it’s nice to have easy web access to get into the weeds.
So you like it cluttered with buttons and stuff?😳🙆🏻♂️
I do.@@Turtleback8024
They are most definitely not going away
@@kurtislowe6749 I feel their use will be looked back on as a funky high end feature, like intercoms.
@@SwirlingDragonMist they will just make the amps smart like they are already starting to do. Can turn different zones on and from your phone and cast different things to different zones.
@@kurtislowe6749 I see a trend towards a more internet of things, like Sonos amps, but from more familiar big box brands. More of a mesh network of trimmed down devices, instead of a monster flagship with it’s tendrils running all over the house. I feel just for the sake of ease of use, it’s conceptually softer on the mind to have a device in each room for each user. What we think of as “lifestyle” speakers like what we see from Google and Apple and Samsung and Sony. I see zones as a niche use case that adds cost for every buyer and functionality headaches for the whole family to figure out how to properly use.

I still have the Apple TV issue, even after having changed to HDMI Mode 2.
It takes about 20-40 seconds for the Atmos to be recognized, sometimes not at all.
Tried both the Netflix and the Apple TV+ apps.
My unit was horrible till I made the change. This issue has been brought up with Yamaha though.
Outstanding. Mine arrives tomorrow and this is a great intro.
How do you like it so far?
@@chrisdiesenbruch7201 Really good. Super easy set up. Excellent tho not outstanding on 2 channel and very good on movies. Looks and feels good to use. Almost too easy compared to others I've had. @@daveconroy6859 thanks I set mine up last night but still working through a few things. On the power amp assign menu on the screen down the bottom it has sp1 as front presence and SP2 as rear surround but I can't figure out how to get down to that menu and tell it I want it to choose SP2. So with the Power Amp Assign - the "Basic" setting with the "Select Automatically" setting; I can hook up a 7.2.1 speaker system... (7 lower speakers & 2 Atomos height speakers) and if the receiver detects Dolby atoms it will use the 5.2.1 , but if I put in a 7.1 DTS (non-atmos) Blu-ray, it will use the 7.1 setup up?? If that is correct that is pretty cool.

Are there more Aventage models coming? The most recent models I’ve seen don’t come close to the performance of the 2080 or 3080.
A2A is almost the same as V6A this time. A4A is supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks according to a Yamaha insider. Got a peek of the spec sheet too. A4A and above have better DACs (and room correction as usual).

Regarding power amp assign, is there a way to do 3.1.2+Bi amp, since this would be 7 channels?

I hope.
@@ideiben3190 How do you find it after a year? any regrets? i'm thinking of sntaching this thing up.
Very informative
What does Enhancer do? 10:35
Too many limitations. No overhead if you want 7.1, and most new visual features (hdmi 2.1 etc) in a hypothetical future firmware update.
If you want 7.1.2 then you need a 9 channel receiver which you're not going to find at this price point unless you go used or closeout on previous year models.
@@OHMAudioChannel Many features are locked behind a hypothetical future firmware update. I'll just wait for newer models that have everything at release.
This is super informative but I'm struggling with the pre amp assign settings. it doesnt seem to switch between 5.1.2/7.1 automatically. anyone else have this issue?
Choose straight mode to automatically switch between 5.1.2 and 7.1. Only drawback is while playing stereo it plays in 2.1 using the front channels
Over here in the UK it would be about £450 notes Not bad for people just getting into AV & Atmos but if your wanting something with a bit more clout go for the other makes
What do you mean by 2 channel driven?
Does this means it supports only 2 channels?? Or how this works
It supports 7 channels. But with all channels driven the power is gonna be less. The power ratings are almost always displayed with 2 channels driven. It's a lame marketing trick I suppose
@@skeevybastid689 thank you.. So it has some limitations playing 7 channels.. Not sure how this will sound in Real time
@@JagadeeshPN I think if you get speakers that are easier to drive and don't need a whole Lotta power to sound good you should be fine.
@@skeevybastid689 thank you.. now understood the whole concept of 2 channel driven.. Thanks for your reply 👍
Had a very poor s/n of 71db at Audio Science Review.
Review would've been much more helpful if you explained what each setting did. It was like watching a powerpoint presentation where the presenter reads every word on the slide, but doesn't elaborate or explain anything.
He doesn't know anything! Lol
@@rlwings oh your here too. Could you imagine if I explained every setting. You'd lose your mind. I mean your already falling asleep on the video as is.
I have my movies on my PC. How do I connect my PC's HDMI to the AV receiver? Will I only get the video or the audio too?
IP Address thing doesn’t work. 😢
Love you Masonic Symbol in your logo. I'm a Master Mason also.
Anyone know how long the cable is on the calibration mic?
20 feet? I'm guessing... It's pretty long
