I think enough people have explained the JC connection already, so let me remind everyone that we always associate Goodness, like healing, with the Light - and when you apply Light to darkness and disease, it disinfects and burns up the darkness, turning it into little flecks of ash that fly away and dissipate into nothing. However, when John Coffey put the remains of the infection from the tumor into Percy along with enough of himself so Percy could see what Wild Billy had done, Percy's mind was infected and he acted on instinct and shot Billy to punish him. Then, after he coughed out the last bit of the tumor, Percy was left with scrambled eggs for brains from the abrupt insertion of the tumor infection into the correct part of his brain to remove all self-control from him. He'll spend the rest of his life in a daze on auto pilot where he can't hurt or torture anyone else again, right in the very institution that he planned on wreaking havoc in.
I really enjoyed reading this when Stephen King released it in monthly installments back in the spring of 1996. The movie is an extremely faithful adaptation, and my absolute favorite movie made from King's works... and I cry every time.

The specks aren't bugs, they are just dark shadows that represent the sickness/injury removed.
The movie glosses over it but all the prisoners on the Green Mile are convicted (rightly or wrongly) of 1st degree murder. Bitterbuck (the Native American) went after someone that hurt a family member & in his rage went too far. He regretted killing them but not attacking them, because in his heart he was protecting family. He should've been given a lesser sentence due to temporary insanity or such, but being an Indian meant he didn't really get a fair sentencing hearing taking circumstances into account. In the end he accepted he brought the law on himself though because he did mean to do the assault. Dale (French guy) was an immigrant that didn't read & write English fluently. Had a hard time finding work, desperately resorted to robbery & in the process killed someone. He also didn't want to die but realized his actions were wrong & regretted hurting someone else. Still he was convicted of 1st degree instead of 2nd, so got the death penalty too. Of course Wild Bill was just plain evil, did deliberately kill more than one person & deserved the death penalty.

    Here's some tidbit of info:
    1) Michael Clarke Duncan paid tribute to Tom Hanks at a celebration of Tom and saying that Tom was the one who helped/guided him how to do this character. ruclips.net/video/47grTxhtN8o/видео.html
    2) Gary Sinise (the man sitting on the porch of the house talking about John Coffey) was the second movie that Gary did with Tom. The first one was Forest Gump, the second one was this one and the third was Appollo 13. In the scene where Lt Dan shows his new legs (titanium same as the shuttle), gives a hint of Appollo 13. Gary was so recognized after the movie Forest Gump, that people started seeing him in public and saying Hi Lt Dan ... so Gary started a band called the Lt Dan Band, and goes around to entertain the Veterans and is heavily involved with the Veterans and military as he has many in his immediate family (and his wife's family) that went to war and knows about PTSD, etc. Listen to his story here. ruclips.net/video/3bbTOjBi7nA/видео.html Also, of course Gary Sinise would be at the same function as Michael and took to the stage to do a tribute to Hanks. ruclips.net/video/rBhL2OztgFY/видео.html BTW, here is a video of Tom Hanks surprising Gary Sinise, as Forest Gump when the Lt Dan Band is doing a live concert. ruclips.net/video/-ac2SfUUGZU/видео.html
    3) Some may not be too religious, but if you notice, John Coffey's initials are JC ... coincidence?
    4) When Belinda asks where did John get his scars, he doesn't remember, but some have said that since there was no record of him before the girls' incident, that he may have gotten his scars from the days of slavery.

Del is a very sympathetic character in the film but he was convicted of the rape and murder of a 7 year old girl. He then tried burning her body which set fire to an adjacent apartment building killing 6 more people.
Part of the genius of the book and movie is how it’s a completely straight up prison movie until John cures Paul. So unexpected. So perfect. My only thought is when Paul is saying his lines at John’s execution he should have said “may god have mercy on OUR souls”.

    1. YOU WILL CRY
    2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".
    3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935.)
    4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
    5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭
    6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse:
The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part.
    7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie.
    8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
    9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of being Percy.👌
    10. A little fun fact: Toot Toot the trustee is played by Harry Dean Stanton.(RIP) The other guards' names are Harry Terwilliger/Jeffery DeMunn
    and Dean Stanton/Barry Pepper.
    11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off.
    13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced
    the GREATEST MOVIE EVER.
    15. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

10:00 Well, I'm sure executions weren't happening every day or every week, so of course they needed to practice. It wasn't something they were extremely used to doing. If you see the number of prisoners they had on their block, that would give you an idea of how often they did it. Enough time in between executions for them to get rusty and the whole process out of their minds. Plus, Paul doesn't want sloppy work: he wants them to be extremely professional at every step.

Excited to see your reaction to this film. Actually prefer this one to Shawshank. Stephen King has amazing non-horror books like my favourites the Green Mile, Under the Dome and 11/22/63, with the latter being my absolute favourite (time travelling + preventing the assasination of JFK). But the Green Mile is the best film adaptation in my opinion. Equally as good as the book if not even slightly better. Always crying like a baby - especially at Dale's part. :(

According to a Stephen King interview, John Coffey (JC) is the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ (JC). A healer, foreseer, he feels all the hate in the world, there was 3 executions like there were 3 crucifixions, he knew all the constellations, he said the dancers were just like the angels in Heaven & other subtle hints. Great movie, great reaction.

I love that Melinda gave John the medallion after he healed her. St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers against death on a journey. Many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand, leading the lambs to the light... fits John Coffey.

Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 2 years... makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.

You know, the ending was more than just what he considers a curse, it goes deeper… in 1935 he was a prison guard on death row… he had to bare witness to the death of the prisoners. Now, he is 108 years old, and even though he left his former profession years ago, he has to continue to bare witness to the death of his friends and loved ones. Just like he did on the mile. Also, i know Stephen king was thinking of if Jesus was alive in modern times, what would it look like. But when i see Coffey, I don’t think of him as Jesus if he was alive in modern times… i think of him more as God putting a gift in a man, who would he choose… it would be the one who is innocent, child-like, and with the purest heart. Not the smartest, or the richest, but the purest of humanity.

Yes, sir, John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Note the scene when John is watching his first ever “flicker show” and the light from the movie projector is shining from behind, illuminating his head just like a halo - the Christian symbolism is unmistakable.)

Some facts: All executions, even the ones done today in the United States are rehearsed so that the squad is able to pull off each one with as little difficulty as possible, both for the squad and the inmate. There might be mutliple rehearsals. John's initles are J.C, same as Jesus Christ. John puts the good back into someone and takes the bad out, in the form of the bugs. My question is, how did Harry (the guard helping Percy put the cap over Del's head) didn't realize the sponge wasn't wet and didn't say anything. But then there wouldn't be that plot point in the movie to make the audience dislike Percy even more.
Also, you have to understand the time period that this movie was taking place in, the mid 1930s, and racism was still blatantly open especially in the south where this prison was taking place. To answer your question about why the train for every execution, they don't execute prisoners every day, week, or even month. It might be a year or more before the next execution takes place.

Imagine sitting with someone to watch a movie, one that they haven't seen and you have. Then imagine them talking and asking questions and making unnecessary comments throughout. Would you want to sit there and watch it with them? I would love to see their reactions though, it says a lot about a person. Would you give your time or money? Most people won't, just think about it.

    • @rbrainsop1

If you're complaining about the chatter during the movie, it's just part of the gig with reaction videos. Sometimes it's frustrating when they talk over something they needed to hear, but they have to do it. It's literally what people are here to see. Plus, if they aren't "adding value" they'll get copyright claims for just showing clips of the movie, and that's usually easier to quantify when they're giving commentary (rather than just their facial expressions in the corner of the screen). And I've actually seen reactions where the person hardly says anything, and honestly, it's pretty boring. It's a very different experience from sitting in a room with someone who's watching the movie with you. You just end up watching the clips instead of them, at which point, why not just watch the movie yourself?

@@rbrainsop1 Thanks for the reply Molly. Try not to think of it as complaining, think if it as criticism. Of course everyone is not like you or me. Also, I understand everything about RUclips and what you have to do, no worries there. I've seen the movie and I've watched many reactions to it, actually with channels that have many more subscribers, and they were good reaction videos, they were not like this. This is one of my favorite movies and I like to see how other people react to it. Are endless questions and questionable comments really "reacting" to the movie? It's also obvious that someone sitting in the corner making faces is not what I meant either. The truth is I'm an "average" viewer, and I enjoy the heartfelt reactions, many people do feel the same. I made it through 15 minutes, and I heard a stream of comments and questions, he has subtle reactions on top of it. Maybe the editor is poor at editing, I don't know. It's simply criticism, try not to take offense at it and maybe Newfie can think about it and maybe incorporate it into his stream. Bottom line is you don't get much time to grab a persons attention, if you don' they won't be back. I will certainly think twice about clicking on another video and I didn't subscribe, which is the only reason he exists on here. Good luck Newfie.

Witnesses are for legal issues. If there's an accusation of foul play or the execution being performed inadequately/with undue cruelty the witnesses can attest to the validity or falsehood of those claims. It's protection for the prison/guards

It's a great movie and I've seen many reactions to it because of how nuch I've been moved by it. But in that time you begin to pick up on its flaws too.
And the big one I am seeing today is that the Tom Hanks character deserves a whole more pain and condemnation than what he got. He had a guy on his block who could cure cancer, cure all sorts of maladies, even bring people back to life from catastrophic injury if he gets to them in time, someone like the world hasn't seen for say 2,000 years. And not only does he know he's innocent, he actually knows who really killed the two little girls who's murders he was convicted of.
So even though John is nice enough not to want anyone to get into trouble by doing something illegal in order to save him how about asking John if he could try to do something legal and only a tiny bit unethical like say lie and tell everyone Wild Bill confessed to the murders before he died? That and some money should be enough to get a good lawyer interested in the case who in turn can get a stay of execution until they can investigate. And the investigation would easily show Wild Bill's guilt now that they know what to look for.
But nooo. He decides he'll keep it all to himself. And he doesn't even give John Coffey the opportunity to weigh in on the fact that a good lawyer could get his case repoened and probably get him off. So how does that make the Tom Hanks character a good personn? He was willing to do whatever he could to get John out of there - but only apparently as long as it didn't cost him any money.

…ya not many good lawyers for people of color in the south at this time. And the few good lawyers aren’t going to risk their life and their family’s lives to take a death row case about 2 dead whites girls 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @Kayjee17
      @Kayjee17 Год назад +1

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this. He was willing to let John Coffey escape to freedom, which would either put him and maybe some of the others in jail, or they'd be fired and blackballed, unable to get another good job and probably make them starving in the 1930s when jobs and food were very hard to come by. And you're ignoring the biggest problem with your ideas - it wouldn't matter what they lied and swore to because it happened in the very racist past where no one with the authority to release John would give a damn if they swore he was innocent or not because it would be one less N word in the world.
Plus - John wanted to die! He told Paul that he was tired of being in pain all the time from feeling all the ugliness in the world. Sure, he was scared of dying, but he still wanted it and it was the only mercy that Paul and the other guys could give him. I don't think Paul's long life was a punishment at all; it was an unintentional gift from John to his friend Paul so Paul could see what John saw. But because John had no idea how long he'd been alive, he had no idea how long his gift would keep Paul alive, and God wouldn't remove a gift from His son.

    • @tgfitzgerald
      @tgfitzgerald Год назад

In the book Paul does all of the things you're talking about. He's actually figures out that Wild Bill killed the girls on his own. He goes and looks up Bill's previous records, talks to the deputy who investigated, literally leaves no stone unturned. But no one will even consider reopening the case. He and his wife Jan have another meeting at his house, hashing it all out just trying to find some way to save John but to no avail. In fact, Jan gets so angry and frustrated she ends up raking all the dishes from their meal off the table, smashing everything. They didn't include all that in the movie because even without it the film was 3 hours long. But I guarantee if you read the book you wouldn't fault Paul or the other guards for not doing enough. Innocent people still get wrongfully convicted today,, despite forensics and DNA evidence. Imagine how difficult it would have been to overturn a murder and rape conviction in the South during the 30s involving a black man and 2 little white girls.

    • @itt23r
      @itt23r Год назад

@@tgfitzgerald Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like it is the movie that is at fault in not addressing the issue. Or maybe not. The producers may have felt it would have been too distracting to the flow of the movie to go into it, because it is not something you could cover quickly with a simple line or two of dialogue. But I still think maybe a montage of Paul doing his due dilligence to get John a new trial in the face of a justice system that would have no part of it would have gone a long way toward explaining the scene where Paul asks John if he wants him to bust him out.
And if they felt it would have made the movie too long there is a lot of fat in it at the end they could have lopped off. The movie really ends just fine after they go to visit the mouse and all the pontificating after that scene showing his friend in her casket, etc. etc. seems pointless and anticlimactic.
