- A playthrough of Titus's 1994 license-based racing game for the Super Nintendo, Lamborghini American Challenge.
This video shows the entire championship mode played though as Sly.
Lamborghini American Challenge is a conversion of Crazy Cars III, the final entry in a trilogy of behind-the-car sprite-scaling racing games originally created for the Amiga.
The aim of the game is to become king of the illegal American street-racing scene as you race a Lamborghini Diablo through a series of three leagues. As you move up through the ranks, you'll use your winnings to upgrade your car's performance and buy your way into higher-stakes races.
Gremlin and Magnetic Fields' Lotus and Jaguar games were top dog when Crazy Cars III came out in 1992, and Titus's Lamborghini-licensed effort was clearly intended to challenge the pecking order. To that end, it failed, but it was a good effort that introduced some fun new ideas.
At the start of each race you can bet against the competition to increase your potential winnings (or losses), and the risk-versus-reward style gameplay does a nice job of making every race feel meaningful. In a nod to Test Drive, the game also features police units that attempt to hinder your progress by boxing you in and fining you for traffic infractions.
The SNES version tosses in a few new ideas of its own, including a bizarre mode that has you shooting anyone in your way with the SuperScope, but it's largely the same game as it was on the computers.
The graphics are less detailed and there's a huge black bar filling the bottom of the screen, but the game runs at a smoother framerate than it did on the Amiga.
The SNES game also has a new soundtrack and music now plays during the races, but I really could've done without that addition. Lamborghini American Challenge's audio is the worst I've ever heard from a Super Nintendo game. That buzzsaw guitar sample so intolerably harsh and grating that I have to outright mute the audio to play the game.
The controls feel terrible at the beginning, but they improve as you upgrade your car's handling, and after awhile the driving starts to feel pretty good.
I know that it has its fans, but I'm not particularly enamored with Lamborghini American Challenge. It's not bad, but this style of racing game had already been done far better on the SNES with Top Gear 1 and 2.
Sorry Titus, but Gremlin wins again.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
This game is the reason I’m knee deep in simracing. And racing games in general. Loved to play this and F-Zero as a kid.
well F-Zero is getting a battle royale re release soon!
I always loved the map in this game. It’s like it’s alive, so cool.
back in the 90s i was at winn dixie with mom and just about every game was rented. i took a chance on lamborghini american challenge. i can't believe how unappreciated this game is.
remember when you could rent a game for a dollar? blockbuster rent 4 days for $4.
Very underrated game I think not a whole lot of people knew about it. I think it was better than the top gear series! Have no idea what the hell my parents did with my copy or my SNES for that matter 😟
Melhor que Top Gear? NUNCA!
Agora você forçou, amigo.
This game also has a hidden mode with Super Scope support. Not much of a race since you just blow all the other cars off the road, but it's an amusing novelty.
Even police cars?
I liked the PC port very much! Back in the day it really was a cool game with neat graphics.
Nice to see this. My cousin had this on his nintendo and when i came by we used to race each other😊
47:41 I actually used to live in Houston and I WISH the area around it looked as cool as it does in this game, the only thing they got right was the humidity
I don't care much for the main game, but the shooting mode unlocked by plugging in a Super Scope is actually a lot of fun
You know it's the American challenge because there's a massive American flag on the main menu.
😆
I disagree with what you said about the music, I actually love it. The in-race music, especially, is among the very best on the Super NES in my view.
holy the amount of nostalgic Im hit with right now!
This game is like Top Gear, But only the Lamborghinis
This brings me back
Rented this from Blockbuster once. While playing it I encountered a glitch when I got pulled over by the police by being given over 3 BILLION dollars.
Admitamolos 😂 todos elijiamos a Sly 😎 porque era el único personaje genial de este juegazo de carrera Lamborghini de la snes 💎
It's way better than you'd expect from Titus, but Lamborghini American Challenge feels like a second-rate Top Gear wannabe.
Was this Titus' best title?
It doesn't have to do with the video, but your earthbound video was your first time playing?
@Patrik Bengtsson I can't say since I haven't played all of their games, but it is the best of the ones I have played.
@@maycoed7874 Nope.
@@NintendoComplete 🤯
Note to self "Drive extra careful in Florida because people love throwing their umbrellas 🌂 out in the middle of the road".
Probably a result of the random 15 minute torrential downpours that happen everyday.
DOS version is hell hard.
Your car is much lighter and much easier to get off track
Very little room for mistakes
No saving game until clearing division challenge.
Also in DOS version when using boost, why the gear is N?
This was better than the N64 sequel
Square Enix called; they want their SNES port of Rad Racer back
How does the company that made Superman 64 make this?
I had the MS-DOS port of this.
It's sure hard in that version as your car is much lighter as if you ride motorcycle
Also your gear changes to N when using boost
Lamborghini are really fast huh, from 0 to 300mph in 8 seconds.
nice👌
Now I can't stop being annoyed that there's no headlights
Team Sly 💪⚡
Game has so much potential, a bit LAZY on the stage design.
4:26 11 frankie place wolverine x men it's you?🤔🤫
when you are arrasted, you get rich, I dont remember why, but it happens
Why does my car gets sold automatically? When I upgrade to 5 th manual
You don't have enough money for the next race. Do notice that every race you're in, you need to pay a certain amount of fee.
@@jimmychong8415 ah I understand it, now I can play again haha thanks so much (btw im 36 and playing retro games) :-D
@@Comdesk-f8o Glad that I could help.
I'm 35 and I'm not playing retro games but rather enjoying listening to the soundtracks of retro games
@@jimmychong8415 yeah mee too, I also listen to snes music. But I had a summer holiday and played some games for a few minutes usually when ivs nothing to do, thanks again!
If local racer won the race in the first place instead of you or any rival, who will take the total bet money? No one??
Should of had better music and been called super rad racer. Hopefully someone does msu cd music patch for it thats way better😊
Background scrolls way too much.
It doesn't seem to run that much smoother than the Amiga. And it has much less detail as you said. The Amiga version tries to emulate the Sega Super Scaler level of detail with much more roadside objects, the SNES has much less, not that impressive.
Lamborghini american challenge
All right
Es mejor que top gear de esl estoy seguro
Cheater 👎🏻
Why?
Damn you, Hagar 😅
