Interesting review but very honest. I ordered my ST back in January this year and looks like I won’t get the car til this coming January. The price has certainly gone up; I ordered the magnetic plus HUD, panoramic roof, blind spot, driver assist pack, performance pack and park assist. With a dealer £500 off, I have a total price of £36,500 (plus I’ll get around £2k back trading in my current car). Looks like I got a good deal; as you say £40k is too much. I’ve gone for auto, partly because I’m getting older and lazier but then there is still manual mode with the paddles for a bit of fun!

We ordered ours January 2021 and it got built in November. Same colour as yours. Arrives in a few weeks, currently it’s at a dock in Holland.
I ordered mine this year on February 1st, the dealer told me it will take about 10-12 months … and last week he phoned me telling me that it was built on March 2nd… I will get it next week. The market is so weird at the moment…

Buy one (manual) stuff the price, just go to mountune and get the 360bhp upgrade. Now that's a flying machine with a sub 5 sec time to 62.....wheeeeee.
I agree David, 6 speed manual is a better suited application to the Focus ST

I got the Auto. Had it 6 months and love it.
It's not actually that bad, the more I lived with the car I started to enjoy it more, especially having no clutch pedal in start stop traffic

Further to the price, if you go over the £40k with the extras, you will pay additional road tax for 5 years. Don't press those extras guys.

Good video and review. Ive got a low miles 20 plate manual, and at £25k from a main dealer makes a lot more sense than £40k new. I think theyre great cars, but new cars are all silly money, and the Focus is no exception. Will go over to the sub button now. Keep up the good work. 👍

@@PocketRockets Ford are not known for great automatic transmissions of late. So I'd say wait a few years and see if the transmission is reliable.

Honest review. i ordered this just yesterday, but managed to wangle 3500 discount off brand new. taking it back down to the price it was so i picked it up. Im moving from the fiesta mk7 to this. I think it really is a 35k car top with all specs and should be the classic ford affordable prices

I wouldn't have thought of a Ford Focus as a "Pocket Rocket", it's actually wider and taller than an old Ford Granada which was considered a large car (a bit shorter though ;)
Still a hot hatch although cant stop thinking about the good old days of no nonsense small fast Ford's

My biggest issue with auto boxes, especially in performance cars, is that they're unpredictable to the point of being dangerous. Several times auto boxes have tried to kill me by kicking down when least expected, delivering a massive kick of unexpected torque. I don't understand why they can't be made to hold the gear when mid corner!
Also, what the hell are Ford thinking fitting those tyres over the Michelins? I have those on my Mustang, I can't wait to get shut of them. They're deadly below about 10 degrees C.
It's mainly down to being a torque convertor, but from experience, it's how they are programmed by the manufacturer
Wasn't so bad in the Focus to be fair especially in Sport mode but miles apart from something like the I30N with its DCT box
Yes P Zeros in the UK I think is a no no, myself and Car Obsession found this out in the i30N that ran P Zeros on a wet cold English day 👎🏼

Interesting point about the Pirelli P Zero tyres, Hyundai has also opted for them too on the i30n. Wonder if it’s cost cutting or supply chain issues?
Yes correct Kevin! Funnily enough, I tested an i30N against a pre facelift Focus ST (that ran Pilot Sport 4S) and the i30N had a Pirelli P Zeros 🤷🏽♂️

As I said before Andrew, I'm quoting full retail pricing by the manufacturer. I'm going to shop around finding discounted pricing to undercut the actual manufacturer that have given me their car to test
But this highlights potential buyers can shop around and get a better deal, it's a win win for everyone 👍🏼

Slippery mode is for when the road could be slippery eg when it's been snowing or icy / slushy. Power delivery is softened so less chance of losing traction in slippery conditions so it will help you when pulling away or doing a hill start. Don't like the Kermit green paint colour.
I know Gary, just doesn't make sense in a FWD car to me
The Mean Green paint does indeed split opinions, each to their own - good thing Ford allow you to choose other colours

I’ve never got my head round turning traction control off when it’s snowing, but then again I’m getting on a bit, my mode of transport is a focus active x auto which I quite like and which I think likes me 😬
But the whole point of the st is being able to reve your engine how does an automatic fair in that?
Revs out like the manual version (as long as you have the box in Manual mode so you have the control)
Stick to manual, it's a better application and feels better too!
Good video. But you need to have a look on the market, you will not get anything cheaper. All hot hatches cost this much now.
I went for manual . Tested few before I got mine and none of what I was interested in didn't do better job then this.
Choice was between Megane, I30 and Civic.
And
Sorry Mike incorrect, you can get a Hyundai i30N for sub £35k and I've tested both and found the i30N to be a more engaging experience (tested both on the same day & roads)
If you mean Civic Type R, that wipes the floor with every hot hatch on the market
The Focus ST isn't bad but when comparing other cars on the market, it certainly isn't the best option especially on price in this current climate

I30 auto comes to 37 something. Anyway asked around so I had a decent deal. Managed to get around £2100 off final price. Shame that Track package wasn't available then.
Civic, well I really didn't like how it looks and £47k price tag.
Megane only automatic. I didn't even realise they stopped using manual gearboxes. But it was fun to drive.

In Australia the dealers are dreaming with how much they are asking for these 40k+ for a focus they caN shove it.
A big disappointment I know 👎🏼 if it means anything, it's still a cracking package, but it's up against some strong competition

You're going the right way looking at prefaclift, no major difference between one and a Facelift in reality

The fact all these cars are above 40 k now is that the upper celling is 39,999 for the 175 a year road tax above the 40 k and u pay the full road tax
Cars over £40k, it's called 'Luxury Car Tax' so you get hit more based on value on top of CO2 emissions

Focus is a fair bit bigger and more practical than a Mini JCW, a better comparison would be against the Fiesta rather than the Focus

Isn’t there a manual mode in the transmission to override the automatic shifts?
I bet manual transmission is only a state of mind - a Johnny Bravo mentality. Manual transmission is a more complex because of clutch and gear pairing. There are very cars where a sweet spot maintained. Even 2 Civic Type R wouldn’t have same clutch and shift tuning.
Yes, you can select manual mode and shift yourself
But still doesn't beat a manual shifter where you can rev match

Ridiculous money, I specced one recently & went over £42k, no chance I'm paying that for a Focus
I know Ian, it's eye watering but at some others in the comments have said, you can shop around on a few websites and get money off retail prices but saying that even with discounts it's still mental!
You're better off with a Mk2 Focus ST instead, can't beat a five pot rumble! 😀

All about the ££ that why they want to go into EV SUV like most car companies, use to be selling in numbers can not see people buying or leasing new cars at these prices, even used cars are crazy, a second had old 1lte run-arounds are 3.5 to 5.5k atm

I struggle to get my manual one to pop and crack. Not sure though if it’s too new still as only done 800 miles so far.

@@PocketRockets yeah pretty much most of the time. I can get it to do more in race but proper stiff on the roads round my way
Exhaust needs some running in or it's just exhaust filters preventing it from doing it more
Means only one thing - aftermarket exhaust 😈
if it was RS cool, for ST way too much money
It has a lot of character from the Mk3 RS personally (I owned one) minus the AWD system of course
But yes it's a lot of money for a ST product, and could only imagine a Mk4 RS being £50+k for Ford to make it viable probably making it the sole reason behind not going into production unfortunately

More than £40k. As you’ll have to pay the VED luxury car supplement. Anyone who buys a new car that has a list price of £40k or over has to pay £390 for 5 years from the second time the car is taxed. That’s on top of the £190 you would usually pay.

After attempting to drive the MK4 as a daily driver for £27k with blis, hud, performance pack etc... its been so unreliable I wouldn't pay anything over that for one! Awful experience owning the early MK4 ST.
What unreliability have you been struck with?
@PocketRockets Unable to use as a daily driver as planned. Headlights, software updates, error warnings a plenty, key not recognised, pre-collision assist not working, HUD faulty, if car starts no display... disingenuous stealership... front diff setup allegedly missing two bolts on third service but never noticed on previous two so only noticed certain things when out of warranty... even with discount I'd never buy a Ford again, including the new VW platform options.
Bloody hell! Sounds like a nightmare. Did you buy it new or second-hand?

No I don’t think Ford have the quality of the Build, a three year old ST focus Has Rattles , Gear leaver squeaks ,
Window squeals ,. Suspension clonks ,
Clutch Knackered on 10.5k miles .
Their Engineers are Comedians .
The dealerships dust their hands of you once you’ve bought the car.
Don’t want to fix things on Warranty .
Their disorganised . Clowns .
I feel the quality of new cars has sloped downhill across most mainstream manufacturers
But saying that the Focus tested wasn't bad in terms of build quality. However, it's difficult for me to gauge that review in 3/4 years' time

Yes that is the issue fraud seems nice but IMO as it gets down the road in age it shows up the poor quality .
And Their quite complicated now with electronics so dealers are the only ones who know how to fix things but they don’t like too, they take your money diagnosis and tell you nothing is wrong .
The whole customer service thing is 💩

Yeah, I can understand your point. When you drive a good manual hot hatch and then drive an auto, they just don't feel the same
Although an Auto opens a broader audience, i.e., People who struggle to use the clutch because of knee issues
