I think the D700 still punches far and above it's weight class. Great color science with jpeg, no post processing needed.

D700 hands down. I sold my D700 5 years ago to finance a D4, have always regretted selling it, and bought a "new" D700 last weekend with 6000 clicks for the equivalent of USD300. It feels like I have come home again now.

Considering we are viewing the pics at about 2mp on our screens, the mp of each camera becomes irrelevant, which is a good thing. That said, I preferred the images from the D700 (I might be biased owning one). More vibrancy, oomph, whatever.
No arguments regarding the lenses in my opinion. That 85mm Ai-s is magical. When distance isn't an issue and I want the best possible pic, I always put my 50mm 1.4 on my D700.
Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it.

Mainly I shoot film, but I have a few digital. D700 is my favourite. Even being digital it keeps reality on a photo. I love it! D300 also... 85mm great lenses. But for a third of the price an 100mm series E it's an incredible lenses.

Fun to watch you with the 3 bodies I own. I could talk for a long time on all of them, but I enjoyed watching someone else do it. In today's world, the D700 occupies a different type of head space. When shooting sports, action, wildlife, it's hard not to reach for the Z9. When using fast lenses, and shooting wide open, it's hard not to reach for the Z9. The ability to quickly grab focus where you want it, reduces subject and photographer fatigue. The focus and recompose days (for me just 5 years ago) are over when shooting the Z9. Silent shooting without blackout etc. You know the drill. All that said, if I want to shoot some low light with monochromatic noise for that special color profile of the D700 - then it's either that or the Canon 5D Mark 1 - another legend for different reasons. It's really hard to go wrong with any of those bodies. Even using f-mount glass on the Z9 (such as the 105mm f1.4 and the 200mm f2) - it makes those lenses so much faster, accurate, and easy to use. That said, hand held, the D700 is more forgiving at slow shutter speeds. As for which combination produced the best results - like apples and oranges. I agree, the longer focal lengths meant you were less "in touch" with the shot and that might translate just a bit to less creative - but not really sure about that. The 100-400mm images left me lacking some connection to them. Preferred the images from the other combinations. Probably just the subject matter. ;-) Cheers!

    Now, after seeing this c
video of yours I subscribed to your channel right a way! I mean, nobody here is talking about the sinergy between the camera and the lenses. It has always been the same, first the lens and then the right camera and the only one to break that rule is the D700! Even with modern Nikon S glass the pictures still look much more organic then the Z cameras with the Z glass which lean much more toward the analytic and cool Zeiss approach. Put the Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f1.4 on the D700 and the dreams are yours ❤❤❤

Your set of images from the D700 were more pleasing to my eye.
Aesthetic beauty never shows on the spec sheets, but if it did, the D700 would be near the top.
Yes, I have a D700, recently bought this big camera for photographing small things.
I also have small cameras with which I photograph big things. And fast things.
Right tool for the job, want beauty, get a D700.

I just purchased D700 tonight "like new" with 27,399 shutter count. Just recently purchased the D300 and mind blown! This all started opening up photos from a D40 and mind blown how the images looked like film, and just recently picked up a D70 [still in route] with 543 shutter count. As a Canon user, kinda now in love with Nikon =) "Right tool for the job" Nice!!!

Wow- so this is a bit late- if you see this comment- great- as an owner of the D700 since 2007 and the D850- 2023 and Z8- 2023…. And I have the 70-200 F mount and my 85 1.4 is the D… so right after the AIS?…… I have to go with the D700 as the winner.. with the D850 a close second…… honestly all your shots were beautiful…. I was most impressed with your settings- both D700 and 850- you were at base ISO… and shot wide open- every shot was wonderful- I think - the Z shots were auto ISO?… anyway… wonderful comparison…… I am at Lake Tahoe (June 2024) right now - looking out - on to the beautiful lake…. And it brings back memories- to the first time I really worked my 85mm 1.4 lens on my D700… at night- on the Cabin deck…. Overlooking the lake late at night- with a full moon…. It was at that point - that I understood what it meant about “having great glass”…… I was blown away - with the moons reflection off the lake…. And how the boats moored on bouies- (I know I misspelled) were bright and shiny- the deck was about 600 feet above the lake- I was in love with my 85….. thank you for reminding me to never sell my D700- or any of my F glass…….. cheers

D700 sensor offers better results for my eyes. And that 85mm is not the best lens of the trial. Love that camera, it'll probably be my last digital unless something really special comes to the market. But its sensor has a special characteristic which will probably never be surpassed in FF: the largest pixels EVER on a sensor - any camera size sensor! That's why it had only 12 MP but whose enlarging capabilities are incredible. I've seen prints with more than a meter wide, VERY nice. Of course it doesn't have the resolution of a 45MP at this size, but it doesn't lose detail, jag (stairs)which gives it that film like many mentions.
I shoot film since the 1970's, the D700 is the closest I've seen. My definitive digital. Love it!
Thanks for the video! A very enlightening comparison! All the best!

Between all 3x camera bodies. D700 - D850- Z9. Resolution for the last 2. For colour D700 -D850-Z9. Vivid thru to pastel colours Z9.(Currently the way of accepted seeing colours). Maybe the future Z7111. Gets it right. Big thanks for the video Griniflix.

Use some custom picture controls and very good set of lens D700 sensor can do magic with the jpgs ❤. Don't see a reason to upgrade unless you are a wildlife / hybrid shooter. For everything else D700 is perfect and will be perfect for next 10 years easily.

Really enjoyed that comparison! Just confirming that for me personally, for what I shoot my D700 is still a strong choice.
I cannot knock its 12.1mp files. They are easy on my computer system and with some careful exposure they still hold their own in today’s standard. Only the most gate-keeping, pixel-peeping, anal photographer amongst photographers will point their nose in the air at what’s capable with the D700. For literally everyone else the D700 is still and incredibly exceptional beast of a camera capable of excellence.
Kudos to you for being honest and saying you enjoy shooting all three cameras!

Perhaps using the same lens for each camera to compare. A D800 with it's 36MP sensor would be a good technology bridge closer to the D700 to compare to the other higher MP cameras.
