If the 28-300 - (on D850) is good enough for NG photographer Bob Holmes....its ok with me (yes, I have it)

I use this lens on my D3s. I used this setup at the 2019 D23 event and it was so fun to take pictures with. It was heavy slinging this around for hours and around crowds but there is something about using this combination in this environment with the colors and distance I was shooting in within the huge halls. All in all it was a blast. Photographing with the D3s and this lens was fun to me and that's better than using mirrorless. The feeling of the mechanics of the mirror flipping and hearing it go, it talks to you and feels alive. With this lens it was art in motion and that's part of the experience while photographing, making it very fun.

If you have studied art, you might know that one of Leonardo DaVinci's original techniques when he was an apprentice, was to NOT make everything sharp especially the outlines of the face and hair. He recognized that SHARP EDGES are not what people really see. At the time ( 1460's), the trend was everything sharp, Sound familiar. The primes I use with the same softness around the edges of faces that I enjoy,

I now use a Sony A9 & A7Riv for my serious/professional work. I sold all my Nikon bodies including D300 & D810, along with all my pro glass. But I could not sell my D700, too attached to it's feel in the hand, robustness and quality. I still use it with the 50mm f/1.8G and 24-120mm f/4G for pleasure shoots and monochromatic work in 2024.

All talk and not 1 photo to demonstrate the lens's performance. Yet, it's all about photography. Amazing!

This lens is good enough for Jay Maisel to be his only lens, good enough for you. And he uses it on a z series now, with no complaints

The D700 with the 28-300 lens was my main travel combo for a long time. I even took it with me to Bolivia and ended up selling A LOT of the prints I made. Fantastic video!

I have been shooting Nikon since the D200 and finally 'upgraded' to a D750 a couple of years ago and love it. However I needed a body for work and was given $300 to find one. I chose the D700 instantly and found a beat up example with 150k clicks on the shutter and it still performs outstandingly. Love it.

Loved my old D700. Picked up a lightly used D3S recently for sports. Amazing camera for not much more than a new D5600

Hey Will. Another awesome video. I purchased the D700 after watching one of your earlier videos this year in like new condition. It is a beast. I have it paired with the Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8D which adds to the weight of the camera. I also have the 80-200 that too is a beast as you probably already know. I definitely will be contributing to the education of these videos. Thank U and appreciate your willingness to share your personal knowledge with all of us. Merry Christmas.

I used this lens for years on my D 700 and had great family and vacation pictures. This summer I took the 28 -300 and put it on my D850 I could not believe how clear how vibrant and how great the pictures were. Glad to see someone else promotes and likes the 28-300 lens.

Totally agree. This lens came as a kit when I bought my D700 many years ago, which I still have and use. I recently went to Europe for a month and I took my Z6,FTZ adaptor and 28-300 lens. All the pictures look great and I never wanted for any other lens. It really is a great all in one travel lens, albeit with the inherent compromises that come with it.
