That immersion heater attaches to a drum full of water. It heats the water by dripping diesel fuel down into the ring at the bottom. We used them for heating water for showers and for cleaning in the field, all the way into the very early 1990's.

Emersion Heater. Great way to lose your eyebrows. Army issue. Put into a metal trash can full of water, prime, light, heat.
I was in Vietnam and never seen anything that looked like that. Sure it wasn't Korea or WW 2.
I was active duty army1968-70. Every field kitchen had these.
