Halfway through the race, I engaged my nitrous system and passed everyone except Dominic. Near the end of the race I engaged the nitrous again, causing the floorboard to fall out but I managed to pass Dominic. Seeing my Eclipse surpass him, Dominic engaged his own hidden nitrous system on his Mazda RX-7 and soundly beat me as the race neared the finish line. Some people don't understand why Scotty says to not buy cars with turbos or NOS. He is talking to the people that wants a car to last for a long time with minor repairs and maintenance...that understand almost nothing about mechanics. Like he says..."cheap like me".

NOS definitely became popular in some racing games like some of the Need for Speed series, midnight club series, and some other racing game genres. Many people crave the rush, adrenaline, and the thrill of going fast that is way beyond their cars limits. I would like to say I am a fan of some racing games going fast but in real life I'd be kind of scared to go extremely with the possible chance of crashing. But on a serious note, drive safe everyone, don't be another statistic please and thank you.

My old Big block Corvette was rebuilt years ago NOS ready by a Professional who does it for a living and is street king here in Colorado. After he rebuilt my 454 and made it NOS ready, I drove the car and have enjoyed it so much and it has so much power , I have never had the need to install the NOS. Tom informed me that a 50-75 shot would not faze the motor and that I should be aware that although it may seem like only a small HP increase, he warned me that the Torque would go way up because it is a big block. WAY UP!! I am over 500 ft lbs at the rear wheels at 9000 feet as it is. A 50 shot would put it over 600 ft lbs! Tom explained we could install a switch as to where the NOS would only come on in 3 and 4th gears. Not 1st or 2nd . Why would I want to do this? Well.. He did make it NOS ready. That means this big block can take a 50 shot easy with no harm at all. Well... It may tear a motor mount sooner than later. But the reason is that some of these new cars are making a lot of power. 10 years ago, I would eat just about everything alive including Crotch Rockets! But now? Wow! Some of these new cars and bikes are really powerful! I need to install the NOS now!!! Not sure I will survive it.. But I feel the need for speed!! Help!!!!
turbo
Even with NOS u will still need a newer car that can handle better.
You don't need a new car to handle it better. You have to build what you have to be able to handle it. That means not only the engine but everything that power is going through.
@Old Ironracing? Where did that come from?
Floor-It-Duh. Costly to upgrade suspension steering and brakes. And even than its hard to make a old muscle car Handle well on turns. Its heavy, probably solid axle, ect.
Good for speed tho.
Fast and the furious movies made this popular
And then even more NFS Underground 2 haha time flies... 😒
Funny thing is, people think Nitro/Meth is fake.
But nope! nitromethane/methanol mix that gets injected.
@@UnTamedMustang leave my meth alone.
People were using NOS long before those movies and games. Bonneville salt flat cars, drag cars, etc, were using them way before.
@Health is Wealth Well first Underground 1.Why people keep forgetting about it. It was also more realistic without any magic recharging involved.
yes Scotty if you're putting NOS in a stock engine of course there is gonna be damage done, but there's no fault if your engine is souped up as well. as far as the tank being small, its only meant to be used for a couple seconds at a time, not minutes replacing your fuel during a race. even most drag races are a couple seconds long
Piston ring end gap is bigger for nitrous. Small end gap causes the rings to bind from increased heat and blow/crack the crown of the piston.
Well I’m sorry Scotty but my eclipse needs to keep up with the Rx7
Just get a gallo 24 and you should be fine
I don't know why I want to watch to the very end, and see Scotty ring that big bell. I do it every time. I guess only Scotty would come up with something original like that.
nos doesnt blow up engine people do. NOS is safe if you do it corectly and you can do just a 50 shot and you will be fine!!
Sounds a lot like what Republicans say...
Why even bother with a 50 unless its on crotch rocket
We used the plate systems. We had an old 350 in a 3/4 ton that was dieing. Se we put a double plate with 2x 250 Horse kits. The carb was missing out. So we took it to the flat drag track. Hit the gas and the carb completely stalled. The truck lunged forward about 100ft, and stopped. It turned pistons sideways in the block. It was fun.

Wow! Scotty has ears everywhere! I was just looking at this two days ago. I even put a NOS in my cart but I thought twice about checking out. Thank you Scotty!
Funny how so many people on here talking out their butts about nitrous. If you never used it why act like you know something about it? Been using nitrous oxide for 35 years drag racing and if you know what you are doing most likely won't have a issue. Stop watching B.S like fast and the furious garbage and do some research about nitrous. Bunch of silly kids on here today.
I've only been using it for about two years, but I researched the hell out of timing and fueling theories while on the sauce. Also running colder non projected tip plugs. Learning to read plugs and or having an accurate wideband is a very good idea while spraying.
Same here nitrous 20 yrs no issue
Been using nitrous on a street/strip car for 10-15 years as well and It's like anything else: Do the research and figure out exactly what you're doing, or you will have problems. Edit: A modern fuel injected OBD II car.

It will double the battery flammability.

I used NOS on my '76 Trans Am 455. It sounded like a different beast and it redlined really fast. It was quick.
How to make a Scotty Kilmer video :
1- Choose a name along the lines of "Why Not to Use *literally anything* in Your Car"
2- Make the video and explain why using literally anything that's not original stock equipment is "bad".
3- Do the editing
4- Publish on RUclips
5- Profit
No seriously, many of your videos have very useful, instructive content, but these days all I seem to see is "why is this bad for your car" and "why is that bad for your car" and "why you shouldnt do this" and "why you shouldnt do that", it seems that these days, doing anything unusual or non-stock is automatically a terrible mistake that will ruin your engine...
Seriously lol
This is some very useful information for people who don't know anything about engines and that I drive my vehicle everyday
that's why you only use it as an occasional boost on a high performance engine designed for the occasional extra cylinder pressure.
I was at the drag strip and it was 1985. A guy was running nitrous on his brand new Iroc Z. He apparently hit the nitrous on launch. The car stalled out. Then the driver attempted to restart the engine and after a series of loud explosions there was pieces of intake and coolant leaking onto the track. They should have pushed it off the track and removed all the sparkplugs and let it air out. I'm sure he learned an expensive lesson the hard way. But it does work great when properly used.
Well, back in the late 70s and 80s i started playing with nitrous in Sand Rails. What i discovered quickly was greed will blow up engines. Its so easy to put an extra 50 or 100 hp in your car when on the bottle. Simply add more fuel nitrous mix. That easy. Problem is your engine could handle an extra bit of HP, say 75 Hp. Then you decide to add 125HP. Oops! Parts on the ground. The added HP located the weak spot. Other then the greed problem it was cheap Horse Power.
Interesting with humor, a great mix for a video. Another good job, thumbs up!
Scotty been watching you for years and you've helped me more than I can say. So from one old fart to another I thank you!!
This has got to be one of my most favorite Scotty Kilmer videos.
I was under the impression that nitrous was fairly safe for your engine, AS LONG AS you widen the gap on your piston rings so they don't expand and cause the piston to lock up in the cylinder.
It is in small amounts, but when you go above 100+ and don't have the IQ god gave a snail, you should probably be doing other things with your life! LOL
Big problem if the ring gap is not increased the rings will over expand do hi heat and you WILL have piston failure
It actually doesn't cost very much here in South Texas to install a wet plate kit with a tune really cheap.
Reuben Lopez That's because it's a carburetor. Just starting off it's already cheap.
@@epsorks I am talking non. I had a 2012 5.3L Chevy extended cab engine mods are. Custom comp cammed, milled heads, headers, c.a.i, TR9 Wet plugs and finally a Wet Plate Kit from Nitrous Outlet setup for a 150 shot and it ran really good and the nitrous lasted more than a few minutes depending on how big the Jets of the nozzles are. Mine were set for 75 fuel and 75 NoS which equals 150 just in case you didn't know. I paid way more for my other mods than the Nitrous Outlet Wet plate kit. and tune combined so if you live somewhere we're it is overpriced then it's time to look somewhere else or watch a RUclips video and D.I.Y Then purchase a flash tuner and do Emailed ECM tunes with a well known tuner if you are SOL. Hey Scotty, what do you think of the pros and cons of a methanol injection system, as compared to a nitrous oxide system?
The fastest car I've ever been in was a built '454' Nova with a 300 shot of nitrous. (He didn't even hit the 500 shot) I'm not lying, and I have a video somewhere. From 30mph -140mph (after he hooked) it took less than most modern cars do to get to 60mph. The 600hp corvettes and coyotes I've been in seemed like they were sitting still compared to this Nova... This was my dads good friend, who was a Chevy boy. He built cars like that all year long. He sold that Nova for $19,000 and it's still running strong today. (It's a street car!) Of course I'm not gonna tell tommy from down the street to throw some Nos on his Civic that has a Short Ram intake and Skunk2 exhaust.. When you have a built V8 monster, I might just say go ahead and see what that thing can do! (A stock block can take 50 shots and 75 shots for a while. I HAVE seen brand new Silverados eat the dust before though, because someone thought that NOS was a good idea on a motor with less than 500 miles on it 😒) So basically, if it's built then go ahead! If it's your daily car, and primary source of transportation maybe you should wait or buy a car to build with the intention of throwing Nos on it. Remember, DO NOT install nitrous on a motor you can't completely rebuild yourself. That's a good general rule of thumb. 👌
This is like giving your car an heart attack! XD
Why not to use MAP GAS/PROPANE systems on your car. "Challenge accepted" 😄. Scotty you have some excellent content on your channel. I think it's some of the best. nos doesn't blow up engines, people do. when its setup and used correctly it works fantastic to get some extra power. its so well done now they used nos to spool up bigger turbos that would normally have a lot of lag or in some drag cars the engine cant even spool the turbo til the engine is under load its that huge

Slow and furious is next movie from the fast and furious series. Cause you can’t use nos and that will make em furious cause they can’t race fast anymore
In my days ( same days as you) NO2 was much too expensive in Canada so we used Naphtha gas, a cool can filled with dry ice and an electric adjustable gas pump. Not as good as NO2 but not far behind. If mixed too rich, it would also blow holes in the pistons or melt the valves. Ahhh the good old days.
Really scraping the barrel for content now aren't ya?
Nitrous Oxide is far from a cheat. It takes a great deal of work and tuning (as you noted) to make it work properly. The better systems I've seen are NOS-aided intercooler systems which increase MAD and give an even bigger performance over just increasing boost pressure in supercharged or turbo charged systems. You are exactly right that NOS systems are terrible for anything but special racing applications.
Rev up ur ricer! Jk

I had a 1998 Toyota Corolla with over 200k miles on the engine and it was giving out so I got some NOS from a friend of mine and decided to have some fun. It took us about 5 seconds to blow up the engine.
But you’ve gotta SKRRT SKRRT!
Another reason they're illegal, at least where I live, is first responders arriving at an accident scene don't like finding large canisters of compressed gas. They don't know if it has been damaged in the crash; even if the contents aren't flammable itself it can still be an explosive hazard. Perhaps the valve at the neck has a small crack or something. It can complicate a rescue.
More fun to inhale it. Lol 😂
