The anxious longing, very essencec of the inherent raas in this raag is so melodiously articulated, which seems so pure of her heart, the kind that is enlightened since Kalidaas's Meghdoot, the transcendent blooming engraved within the clouds movement in moonsoon! (Not a FAN though, Just distant admirer)

Thank You Darbar festival for this wonderful usage of the Internet- thank You for giving us the Gift of Music. In fact, there is similar story about Tansen and Akbar's challenge. It is said that a few jealous courtiers in Akbar's court plotted against Tansen as he was one of the King's Gems. One day, Shaukat Mian (one of the conspirators) questioned Tansen's genius by telling Akbar that a singer's genius can be measured by her? his ability to sing Raag Deepak. Akbar, obviously, did not like anyone questioning Tansen's brilliance like this. So, Akbar ordered Tansen to sing Raag Deepak in the court. Tansen then requested Akbar for two weeks to prepare the Raag. He knew that Raag Deepak would ignite lamps, burn him from the inside and kill him. But, if someone were to sing Raag Megh immediately after Raag Deepak, there was a chance of survival (as Raag Megh induces rainfall which puts off all flames). Keeping this in mind, Tansen trained his daughter Saraswati and a disciple of Swami Haridas, Rupavati, in Raag Megh. He told Saraswati and Rupavati to start singing Raag Megh just after the lamps of the city are lit (due to Tansen singing Raag Deepak). On that fateful day, all of Agra was informed about Tansen's attempt. The royal court assembled that evening for Tansen's concert. The palace grew warm as Tansen sung the alaap. As the music progressed, people started sweating and feeling hot. Slowly, the lamps in Agra were lit and Saraswati and Rupavati started singing Raag Megh. By the time Tansen finished, his eyes were bloodshot and a horrific terror had set his body aflame. Tansen ran outdoors as soon as he finished- and to his greatest joy- soaked in the rains brought by Raag Megh. For a month, Tansen was sick. All he could see was fire. Akbar prayed fervently to restore Tansen back. After Tansen recovered, Akbar fed the poor for eleven days and imprisoned the conspirators after coming to know about their real intentions.

However, noteworthy to notice that she did not entirely restrict herself within the dictums of Bishnupur style; the intricate interplay of both nisads to start with, reminds the beginning that late Ali Akbar Khan did. On the other hand, ma pa ni dha Ni ni dha Ni sa re sa, in one stroke with little tappa like melody, followed through re pa ma pa ga ma re, remids that of Vilayet Khan's style. Sitar doyens are most of all on the other side of horizon now, except her father. In that she is a brilliant hope. There are many players but not an artist anymore! I believe she knows about Chopin's unity with nature in his music or Abdul Karim Khan's unity with almighty in his singing, and wish she keenly meditates into it.

I would characterise myself as an amateur devotee of Indian classical music, but this short extract encapsulates everything I love about the genre: studied, unhurried, supremely played, ravishing and totally captivating. After I first time listened this rendition, by 2 weeks I repeated many times, without the video, just the sound, to feel the purity in the rendition and realized the presence of the devine in this poetic presentation; then put it in my sacred collection besides Chopin. The anxious longing, very essencec of the inherent raas in this raag is so melodiously articulated, which seems so pure of her heart, the kind that is enlightened since Kalidaas's Meghdoot, the transcendent blooming engraved within the clouds movement in moonsoon! (Not a FAN though, Just distant admirer)

In fact, there is similar story about Tansen and Akbar's challenge.
It is said that a few jealous courtiers in Akbar's court plotted against Tansen as he was one of the King's Gems. One day, Shaukat Mian (one of the conspirators) questioned Tansen's genius by telling Akbar that a singer's genius can be measured by her? his ability to sing Raag Deepak.
Akbar, obviously, did not like anyone questioning Tansen's brilliance like this. So, Akbar ordered Tansen to sing Raag Deepak in the court.
Tansen then requested Akbar for two weeks to prepare the Raag. He knew that Raag Deepak would ignite lamps, burn him from the inside and kill him. But, if someone were to sing Raag Megh immediately after Raag Deepak, there was a chance of survival (as Raag Megh induces rainfall which puts off all flames).
Keeping this in mind, Tansen trained his daughter Saraswati and a disciple of Swami Haridas, Rupavati, in Raag Megh. He told Saraswati and Rupavati to start singing Raag Megh just after the lamps of the city are lit (due to Tansen singing Raag Deepak).
On that fateful day, all of Agra was informed about Tansen's attempt. The royal court assembled that evening for Tansen's concert.
The palace grew warm as Tansen sung the alaap. As the music progressed, people started sweating and feeling hot. Slowly, the lamps in Agra were lit and Saraswati and Rupavati started singing Raag Megh.
By the time Tansen finished, his eyes were bloodshot and a horrific terror had set his body aflame. Tansen ran outdoors as soon as he finished- and to his greatest joy- soaked in the rains brought by Raag Megh.
For a month, Tansen was sick. All he could see was fire.
Akbar prayed fervently to restore Tansen back.
After Tansen recovered, Akbar fed the poor for eleven days and imprisoned the conspirators after coming to know about their real intentions.

Further to my previous appreciation, I would also but like to add that there is one slip in this rendition, though very minor but did not escape my ears. Also, aalap is not expanded into the lower octave, which is characteristic of this raag. This is unlike her father's excellence in lower octave, as well for that matter has been that of late Nikhil Banerjee. However, noteworthy to notice that she did not entirely restrict herself within the dictums of Bishnupur style; the intricate interplay of both nisads to start with, reminds the beginning that late Ali Akbar Khan did. On the other hand, ma pa ni dha Ni ni dha Ni sa re sa, in one stroke with little tappa like melody, followed through re pa ma pa ga ma re, remids that of Vilayet Khan's style. Sitar doyens are most of all on the other side of horizon now, except her father. In that she is a brilliant hope. There are many players but not an artist anymore! I believe she knows about Chopin's unity with nature in his music or Abdul Karim Khan's unity with almighty in his singing, and wish she keenly meditates into it.
