    I bought this book on Amazon because having a musical background, in studies of music theory, I felt that this book would help me grow as a musician/ singer songwriter.
    I look forward to receiving it, and putting forth the time in continuing education study . Thank you

    I purchased the old Levin Books for guitar and they did a great job of making me give up reading books to learn guitar theory. I really hope these guys made a better effort to produce a book that makes sense to a person who is not already trained and not a prodigy. I cannot discount the prior books, as theyre considered the gold standard, except for them reading like the intended audience is for other music professors.

      @@jazzguitartoday It's Leavitt, not Levin or Levitt. :) Those books were written 50 years ago, and the focus was a little different than what the needs are of most contemporary guitarists. One of that series' priorities was in helping guitarists play notation of music that they weren't familiar with. This new book (and some other recent and upcoming publications) is more aligned with the interests of most contemporary guitarists today, though there are certainly many lessons to be learned from the Leavitt books, which were revolutionary in their time, and still a treasured resource for many teachers and students.

    As to the book: MAJOR FAIL............... It is not spiral bound. A classic phrase when applied to getting someone to buy a product, make it convenient.
    Yes, I realize I can have it spiral bound. But this is a teaching implement, a reference, that is impossible to keep open. Add a buck or two and have it spiral bound.

      @@jazzguitartoday Sorry to be negative. So let me share something positive that might help. I've loved jazz for a long time. Ironically, not jazz guitar, other than Django and Jim Hall. I don't play jazz, but Tomo Fujita, who had changed my guitar playing life with his videos on triads, connected me to jazz guitar. Recently I was looking at Hendrix and trying to understand extensions. And RUclips showed me an interview with Tomo where he explains why everyone needs to understand jazz guitar, using Little Wing as an example. I mentioned in a comment on Tomo's channel that Jerry Garcia liked Charlie Christian - he said Christian was the first guy to play a guitar like a horn (and Armstrong is one of my heroes) - and Tomo pointed out that he taught John Mayer Christian's performance of Rose Room at Berklee. Since I like Benny Goodman I'd heard it before, but hadn't listened carefully to the guitar. Didn't know enough either. Anyway, searching for Rose Room, Tomo's video on the song was the second link. From Garcia to Christian to Tomo to Mayer... to me. So I'll give Rose Room a shot.
      There are all kinds of entry ways into jazz. But they aren't always obvious. I played the trumpet as a kid. I was very good, but I was a reader. I probably played arpeggios, but had zero idea what they were. I liked marches, but didn't want to march. So I quit. If I'd heard Armstrong's Potato Head Blues I might not have. Later, when I bought Kind of Blue because of a Rolling Stone article on jazz records, where every critic listed it, it blew me away. No one ever told me you could breathe into a horn like that. I'm more familiar with the jazz past than today. My last jazz concerts were Benny Carter, and McCoy Tyner and Emily Remler. I've also see Sun Ra a lot. All dead I think. Even then, my friend who ran the jazz department at a cd store couldn't get his nephews to listen to their own musical heritage.
      I know RUclips presents an opportunity to change that. But no idea how to do it. IMO the danger of a music school like Berklee or GIT is that students come out with knowledge and chops... then what. Communation is more important than technical skill IMO. (Rick Beato can interesting - great interview with Sting with the take-home message
      ... Bach,, Bach,, Bach - but though I may be elitist, I'm not sure his jazz is my jazz.) I've returned to guitar seriously because in this crazy world, it seems like one of the few things worth doing and offers a road to sanity. Good luck.

    • @jazzguitartoday
      @jazzguitartoday  Год назад

      @@mikem668 Every musician is on their own unique journey. Formalized school settings provide structure to those students that learn that way. The idea is for them to be prepared to perform in any setting. In addition, students meet other musicians while they are there creating a network and often building relationships that last a lifetime.

    • @mikem668
      @mikem668 Год назад +1

      @@jazzguitartoday I understand that. And I'm sure the relationships are important. However... it's not clear that that kind of training produces the best music. I also believe that someone can be over-trained. Great art often requires limits. The two non-teaching musicians I know of that went to Berklee are John Mayer and Molly Tuttle. Mayer left after one year. Tuttle probably graduated. People used to go to GIT to become session musicians. Those gigs dried up.
      I'm not arguing that training isn't useful in their journey through life to someone who loves music. I'm questioning its overall importance. Classical and jazz are probably the two kinds of Western music that require the most training. But are they thriving? I love both, but most of the folk, blues, and rock music didn't seem to require training as much as talent. I know many of the great jazz musicians were middle class and did have some serious training. Miles went to Julliard and Marcus Miller played the clarinet before picking up the bass. There's some Julliard connection, but I forget what.
      I'm making a guess and a claim. The guess is that most of the great musicians post 1950 did not have training. And the claim is that most of my favorite music benefits from the rawness of being untrained. My top three musicians of the 20th century, in order, are Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, and Bob Dylan. AFAIK none of them had anything like the kind of training you receive in music school.
