@@iBackshift Thank you! And yes when I’m empty and lazy I do the same! I learned on a milk tanker and that forging liquid really helped me to get the shifting just right!
@SternDrive thank you for explaining how you float the gears…I will look at your video (my husband is not a truck driver so he can’t possibly know how to float the gears) 😊
When I drove a truck with the 13 speed I usually skipped using the 1/2 gear splits while shifting. I only split the gear on the final shift into 13 when I drove for a while. When the trailer was empty I started out in 4th low range then flipped into high range going into 5th It gets me going a lot quicker rolling down the road with an empty trailer or bobtailing.

I am shocked to see that you shift a crash box with single clutching like a car! I drive an 18 speed Peterbilt as well, and if I ever use the clutch it is just partial clutching. That is, I pull it out of gear with no clutch, and simply clutch it into gear. It is just modified double clutch shifting. I'm curious to find out what you do if you miss a shift? How do you find lost gears. Single clutching will not help you on a non synchro transmission when that happens. For me shifting without the clutch, this scenario is never an issue. I just rev match and it falls into gear. Fascinating to watch your shifting.
I am double clutching…I have gotten quite a few questions after posting this video about that. I am planning on making a video showing my foot on the clutch as I’m shifting (going to mount the GoPro on the door side pocket). @@LafondaJackson436 Oops! Sorry. You're double clutching then is excellent, because you miss very few shifts. It's just that it looks almost like single clutching. @@LafondaJackson436 I just watched your video again. Your shifting is excellent and smooth. I am impressed, BUT that is NOT double clutching. It is single clutching. Which you can get away with, and you certainly do well with it, But to do a successful double clutch you must in neutral let the clutch right out to engage the clutch plates. Your clutch is not being let out nearly far enough to call it a double clutch. But it is OK, because your shifts are great. Also, I know why you are not able to float shift without the clutch. It's simple. When you do your clutching, you are clutching early. What this does is it slows your shifts down to an unnatural speed. So when you try to shift without the clutch it will grind, and you will miss your shift, because you are trying to shift at an unnatural slow timing. Shifting without the clutch is naturally much faster. You can not float shift at your usual timing speed. That is what is throwing you off. Here's what I recommend, if you want to try shifting like your hubby with no clutch. Start off with partial clutching. I have a video on that. Pull it out of gear with no clutch, and then clutch it into the next gear. A word of caution though. This is essentially floating, and it will need to be much faster than your normal "double clutch" shift. I'd be interested to see how you do. Good luck!
