- This Is the Night is a 1932 American pre-Code comedy film directed by Frank Tuttle, and starring Lili Damita, Charles Ruggles, Roland Young, Thelma Todd, and Cary Grant in his film debut. It was made by Paramount Pictures.
The picture is based on the 1923 play Pouche by Henri Falk and René Peter, and the 1925 English-language adaptation Naughty Cinderella written by Avery Hopwood. The plays had already been adapted for film once before as Good and Naughty (1926) with Pola Negri.
Plot
When Claire Mathewson's husband Stephen comes back unexpectedly from the 1932 Summer Olympics, where he was supposed to compete in the javelin throw, he discovers the train tickets for a romantic Venice getaway she has planned with her lover Gerald.
Gerald's friend, Bunny, lies and says that the tickets are actually for Gerald and his wife. With Stephen still suspicious, Gerald must find a fake wife to go to Venice with him. He tries to hire the actress Chou-Chou, but since her boyfriend is a jealous man, she gives the job to out-of-work Germaine, who needs the 2000 franc fee to keep from starving. At first, Gerald thinks she is too demure, but she soon convinces him that she can pretend to be a glamorous wife.
The two couples go to Venice. Bunny, attracted to Germaine, decides to join them. On the train, Stephen questions Gerald and Germaine about how they met. When they arrive in Venice, Claire quickly becomes jealous, as both Stephen and Gerald seem fascinated by Germaine. Claire eventually demands that Gerald send Germaine away immediately, so he orders her to leave the next day. Meanwhile, a drunken Bunny climbs a ladder into Germaine's bedroom and offers to take her away. After she turns down his offer, he falls into a canal on his way out and is apprehended by two policemen. Stephen believes he hears a burglar and goes to her room to investigate. The two are then caught in a seemingly compromising position by Gerald and Claire. However, Bunny reappears and explains what really happened. Her love for her husband rekindled, Claire breaks off her affair with Gerald. Germaine reveals to Gerald that she is not in fact Chou-Chou and decides to return to Paris, but Gerald catches up to her in a gondola and asks her to marry him.
Cast
What a Cast!!!. They did the humor with such fluid Wit and Class.
This is a Great Movie, the film is fresh, like it was just released, although it's over 92 years new.
Fun and fabulous Production.
"Madame has lost her dress!" Gotta love pre code! So enjoyable 🌹🥰👍🏽💯🌹
Roland Young and Charlie Ruggles...perfection!! Thank you! 😂
And Grant played with both of them in other movies! Great actors!
Delightful. Cary Grant hadn’t quite become Cary Grant yet, but he was on his way.
@@RP6575mostI had never seen C.G. this young before. He really was a very handsome man.
This is the first time I ever saw Roland Young play a romantic lead. I always saw him as Topper. He was very good in this film.
He's sort of the romantic supporting player in Leo McCary's Ruggles Of Red Gap (1935) with Charles Laughton, Zasu Pitts, and Charles Ruggles. It's very good.
The perfect 1930’s movie for those that NEED respite from life’s challenges. Thank You 💙

❤
Yes, it is so nice to escape the reality we are living in.
Ah so lovely to watch.
This movie is rated a 10. With the male leads in this movie, including Cary Grant, need I say more. A golden classic.
This is funny as hell! Very well written! Excellent actors! Laughter comes hard for me. And I caught self laughing quite a bit!
I absolutely adore Charles Ruggles. He’s so darling.
Imagine Cary Grant playing second fiddle to anyone.
It took me a few times watching this to realize the cigarette box was playing, “Madame has lost her dress!” 🤣
I really loved this era with its charm & the beautiful Italian & English singing. Great & Fun Movie! Thank you for uploading it.
Roland Young, Charlie Ruggles and Cary Grant's first movie, I knew that this would be worth watching, thanks.
Prelude to the Topper era.
So funny, Cary and his vaudeville roots, thanks ❤
Great movie! And to see Roland Young in a romantic and comedic role was hilarious. Everyone was wonderful, thank whoever is responsible for showing movie on utube!!!!!!
Lovely, charming film. It is sad in that Thelma Todd made this only 3 years before her “mysterious “ death at age 29
Yes it’s sad what happened to her. I love watching Fra Diavolo with Thelma, Stan & Ollie and Dennis King!
Such a great movie! Loved the craft of Thelma Todd. I thought she was only a vamp but she acted her way through this role with total control!
I love hearing Cary Grant sing! Too bad he didn’t do more of it. He sang only 2 lines in ‘People Will Talk’ while singing 2 lines in Gaudeamus Igitur at the very end. Loved it!
Ну что там с 1:17:10 ждж
@@Nick-gq2iy sorry, in people will talk he was singing while conducting.
Cary Grant did sing and or played piano in about 14 films.
I loved this artisticly choreographed light-hearted comedy romance! The scenes were beautiful and the acting superb! It is now one of my favorites! Thank you so much for posting this treasure!
A lovely movie
Worth Watching
Thank you...another added to my archive. ❥
Thanks for listening
Mine too.
This delightful movie has an Ernst Lubitsch feel to. It's hard to find, but check out Lubitsch's 1932 masterpiece 'Trouble in Paradise'. It also takes place in Venice and has the same light tone and music as 'This is the Night'. Also both have Charlie Ruggles.
What a satisfying movie from the good old days! Highly recommend to watch!
Love the train station sequence!
That was good loved the singing.
I agree
Just one swell movie. Good story. Comedy and fun. Great cast. Although I can't believe Claire Dodd as Chou-Chou, in the cast list. She was the star that made the story. Loved it. Thanks DK
I think that's Claire Dodd at 20:05, the girl that is told she has to take the job and turns it over to Lily Demita's character who I thought was Chou-Chou. I'm confused.. IMBD said that Claire Dodd plays Chou-chou, too.
Cary Grant was indescribably beautiful and charming
So grateful for the u tubers that have taken the time & effort to put up these gems. Truly, thankyou
Wonderful classic 🎉🎉🎉
Great show, thank you
My pleasure!
one of the COOLEST movies evrr made. Bravo director!!
I’m just a young girl living by my hips ? That one flew under the radar
It was pre-code.
Cary Great actor love all his movies❤❤❤
Cary was supposed to compete in the Olympics and changed his mind because he missed her? 😂 What a premise. 😂
FUNNY ASS MOVIE...😂👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻💥
🌬💀🏴☠️
I love this movie!!! 😍
Pre code: “BJ” = “Before Javelin” ?? Ok! 😂
I wondered if that was innocent or how long "that reference" went back.
They did the humor with such fluid Wit and Class.
Well Well , Uncle Willie gets the girl. "who'll go with me in my little car...?"
The opening scenes where everyone is talking in time with the music reminded me of the Munchkins singing in The Wizard Of Oz. In fact, the rest of the musical numbers also had that Wizard Of Oz sound. But that was okay with me.
For any film buff, the chorus line of Parisienne Porters is bien suffisant!
❤TRADURLO IN ITALIANO GRAZIE ❤
It was very entertaining although sad from the point of view of the girl. Okay, they made a sugary and unrealistic ending, a rosy one, that no one could believe, but that did not spoil the film. It was just quite impossible to believe that the girl would fall in love with that man older and not kind and not charming and not good-looking, a man with nothing to go for him. But as I said even that could not spoil the film. Bunny was very sweet and the girl too, and Grant was his usual never disappointing self.
How can anyone cheat on Mr. Handsome (Dead man dont wear plaids) specially with that guy 😳
It would be many years before they would make another film so rife with delightful sexual innuendo.
every 5 minutes is 10 minutes of commercials thumbs down. too bad cause its a good movie.

Clare Dodd and Thelma Todd, aka hot Toddy, in the same scene if only for a moment
About a million ads.

So good quaLity .cast
Love Cary Grant😊
Lovely, simple, slightly slapstick, slow to start. Gary Grant about 27 years old. That man stayed the same until his late seventies. Lili Demita married Errol Flynn 1935..
He got better looking every year ❤!
Thanks for the upload of this wonderful movie (third time watching it) 😊
Also, the film is a good copy
You're welcome 😊
Didn’t know that Robert Taylor and Cary Grant resembled each another so much when they were young. Love your channel and the old classics ❤
Thanks!
Love this film ❤
As a romantic lead, Roland Young makes a better lothario.
Imagine cheating on Cary Grant with Roland Young. 😂
@@ducksinarowpatience3670,
Mrs. Topper thought that was happening with Mrs. Kirby. 🤷♀️
I can’t imagine it myself.
Wish i was born in 1930 😅😅😅 really
Excellent: Very funny in an extremely sophisticated way. Mocking it's self in an ironically self-deprecated reflection...😂
Adorable. Those pre-Code films got away with a lot! Cary Grant losing to Roland Young does beggar belief.
전부 줄어들었고요 뱀기운빠졌네요 잘 된거에요
very cool opening scheme. Tearing the dress was copied from Jean Harlowe losing her's the same way in Laurel + Hardy short.
❤
What cities are at the head of the list? Most spectacular? Venice. Most romantic? Roma. Fun? Paris. Pleasant? London. Clever? Amsterdam. Intriguing? Istanbul. Familial? Barcelona. Sweet? Vienna. Exciting? Berlin. Winsome? Prague.unspoilt? Stockholm. Done.
dddd-dry....clothes? dddd-dry champagne !
I suffered through the first 8 minutes and 50 seconds. I'm done.
Cute movie🎥
Ruggles superb😊
🎉🎉🎉😊😊❤❤❤ that's all
I loved this movie

Roland Young really? Unbelievably silly the wife falling for Young come on do you take the public for fools? Roland is no leading man he was miscast. Roland kissing Damita made me sick yuck 🤢 probably made her sick too 😂😂Young and Demita should have been replaced. Horrible movie 👎🏽
I would love to watch the movie, but there don’t appear to be any captions. I enjoy watching your channel so much with the RUclips captions, but they don’t seem to be available with this movie.
