  • A fatal boating over the Victoria Day long weekend on a lake north of Kingston, Ont., is under investigation by the OPP, after three people were killed and five injured.
    Officials say a speed boat collided with a fishing boat around 9:30 p.m. local time on May 18, in the Bucks Bay area of Bobs Lake. Three people, between the ages of 21 and 23, died.
    All three had graduated from high schools in the Limestone School District. Their names were Riley Orr, Juliette Cote and Kaila Bearman.
    Global’s Sean O’Shea has the details.

      Depends. Boating regs say 10 km/h max speed within 30m of shore but they also say you MUST have navigation lights after dusk. Did the fishing boat have his white 360 nav light on? Was the speed boat within 30m of shore at the point of collision? Could be one or the other or both parties fault. Without more details could go any which way.

      You'd be surprised how little speed equals a big amount of force. I was shocked when my father hit a massive buck with his car (I was in the passenger seat) and we were going around a corner on a country road so we were going 15km to 20km and the huge buck flew the length of a school bus and then it skidded even further.
      It's not surprising that it takes little speed for boats to get on top of each other when you remember that boats are super slick and aerodynamic shaped and water is a lubricant etc etc.

    As someone who was friends with one of the girls in high school, and as someone who works on a boat for a living: we need stricter laws for boating after dark. A boat collision has two big concerns: the collision itself, and then drowning after. I only knew one of the three victims and she was a wonderful person and a ray of sunshine, I am certainly praying for their souls, and for their families.

    • @GrumpyTV12
      @GrumpyTV12 3 месяца назад

      People ..... we all need to not jump to conclusions here ... yes the speed boat is on top of the fishing boat .... many causes might cause this without the speed boat being at fault. Without actually having an eyewitness account it is difficult to make a judgment. And example is the speed boat passing the fishing boat and the fishing boat might have crossed infront of the path of the faster boat. If the driver of the faster boat had hands on the throttle, a collision could very easily cause the driver to lurch forward, causing more throttle to be applied, making it look like the speed boat was traveling way to fast. It also could have been a mechanical failure on one of the boats.
      I am not saying that the fishing boat is at fault or am I saying the speed boat was. I do commend law enforcement in not jumping the gun and doing what looks like a proper investigation.

    Note this happened at 9:30 PM. Being a cottage boater and one who drove day and night, I would bet ultimate cause of collision was no lights on in the fishing boat and no flashlight either. I would estimate once a month I would pass within 50' of a small fishing boat with no lights on and no flashlight signalling us their location. In half the cases I did not see the fishing boat until I was passed them, it depended on the night sky. Speed or alcohol may have been a factor but I doubt the root cause. First thing I would look for is a flashlight or light switch in the ON position if equipped, remember 9:30 is just past dusk they may not have turned the lights ON yet. BTW we had one collision like this in all my years on the lake, no alcohol and reasonable speed. It was a small aluminum with no lights that caused the collision, fortunately no injuries but the aluminum looked like Jaws bit the front off the boat.

    I suspect two things, A- the speed boat driver wasn't going that fast and B- the people in the fishing boat had no lights on. If the speedboat were WOT it would have cleared the fishing boat and ended up 50ft away. I think the driver of the speedboat didn't see the other boat (no lights) and hit it at low speed, it's all very tragic.

    I would say that during the investigation there will be a high probability of alcohol abuse in this collision. The time of day of the collision, the weather conditions power contribute to excessive alcoholic consumption. I hope that is not the case but if I were a betting man I would definitely put my money on alcohol being the cause

    Everyone needs to shut the hell up. If you weren't there and didn't witness what happened then don't pass judgement. I am sure this was not as simple as one party at fault, it looks like a series of bad decisions and ignorance lead up to this tragedy. My heart is very sad for all parties involved.

    Happen Saturday, pulled the boats Monday. In a 10km zone two boats wouldn't have that impact. Who's driving and if it has been advised that no one says who, the rich caring man doesn't care as much as you think. If not one of you, it's all of you on 3 counts of manslaughter. Not sure why it's being mentioned different high-schools to people who have been out of school for years on aledged ages. On the looks of the age if boat owner, I'd hope the reason for no charge 'yet' is because it's family. Hopefully not hookers or minors that seem not able to be victims lately. Absolutely horrific and yes I have speed through 10km waterways in my younger years, and thank God I'd didn't commit manslaughter doing so... or does it matter if you do or not. To the investigators who may have someone invading a Police investigation. It's now Tuesday and if driver is still unknown, you definitely have someone invading and loosing chance to making 3 counts sentence to 1 and adding another charge of invading a Police investigation

      If people like things without have defined meaning, have I got a story for you. So it's being aledged hammas is in Canada (still not updated on the government terrorists watch page, but nothing has for years. People keep telling me that it doesn't happen in Canada). Either way I've been claiming that hammas has committed The biggest retreat in human history, for you can't get any further away from the still live hostage situation they started. Well we are getting closer to residents on the moon so, might be beaten one day. That's only if this is still considered a retreat because with thought, that public treasury money has been online extorting children, without parents permission, because to the child, thier parents are in trouble for them not being 13 yet, having an account could put thier parents in jail. hammas didn't retreat, they came to paradise if that's the moral fiber of aledged national security. When my generation was that age, common knowledge was girls had to suck a dick to get in a movie. Now that is the movie and hope that thought of self-proclaimed national heroism isn't just youthful common knowledge 😳 Hollywood Me Too movement was a while ago now and took way too long before activated. If it's a reality of this happening and being common knowledge to the youth, I'd hope it's not 20 years before something is done... and it will get done... huh
