Thanks, this was really useful. I had been using the browser version and didn’t know the free app had the voice option. I am also a French learner, and one thing I would suggest is not to do translations too much. At your level you can give the prompts in French and “converse” more naturally that way, and you learn to think in the target language rather than translating all the time.
I have the same problem with Spanish. I was trying to learn that way some time ago, but it speaks too fast. This version of GPT cannot control the voice, so it won't work until the new version is available to me.

"I walked" and "I was walking" are "past tense" and "past perfect tense". Past perfect is great for authors telling a story that happened a long time ago. Pretty standard stuff for writers to use--even without knowing the name of the grammatical context (because the names don't matter--I'm just a nerd). This is a super cool series of ideas. Thanks for putting this together for us!
she ate dinner is not really "elle a mangé le dinner" which is litteral I got it but we simply say "elle a dîné". But the rest when u introduce yourself etc is tremendous with this app; into bargain of that, the accent is there...wow.
I later asked it what is the best way to tell someone you ate dinner in french instead of just translating my english sentence and it use dîné the way you did as well, so I think just asking a ton of questions is the best way to really zero in on the right answer. For the accent, when you prompt in French, the accent is great. When you prompt in english for it to say something in French it has an english-ish accent and sounds odd.
It might help with your past verb tenses if you think of the passé composé as a SNAPSHOT of the past (you can see the clear edges!), while the imparfait is a video or film. The difference is clearest when you pair the two in the same sentence and you can “see” the snapshot “crash” into the video. For example, you were crossing the street (see the video) when a car hit you (snapshot). The same thing is happening in English, but we don’t even think about it: Je regardais la télé quand mon chien m’a mordu la jambe - I was watching TV when my dog bit my leg il étudiait le français quand son ami a frappé à la porte - Hé was studying French when his friend knocked on the door. 👍
It's a great tool to assist your language learning journey. As a native French speaker, the first two sentences you used as examples were somewhat off. The translations provided did not match was was being said.
Hi Braunventure That looks like a great tool you’re presenting today. But for the distinction between passé composé and imparfait I suggest you not use translation with isolated sentences, because a lot of times you can translate “he did” (for example) with either, depending on the context and on the nuance you want to express. It’s not a 1 to 1 translation. I think it’s a much better idea to work with a text in this case (and in general it works better too). Cheers!
Thanks for the tip. I have played around with having it give me an English paragraph where I only translate one sentence to do the translation with more context. Also translating with 2 verbs in the past to distinguish. I'll keep working on it 🤠
@@braunventures Sweet! Do you feel it's a little better this way? Another idea of something that could help even more with imparfait and passé composé is to read easy and short stories with these two tenses... and then try to observe and get a feeling about when you should use one or the other... but without establishing big theories about it and without necessarily translating each sentence. I think the distinction passé composé x imparfait is one of the distinctions that may require a lot of exposure and feedback on your own usage of tthem until you "master" it, so no need to rush ^^

@@Mega-mo8en It‘s just not that simple - regrettably! Passé composé is generally used for a single completed action in the past, so simple past in English. Imparfait is used for something without a definite beginning and end, often the description of an action that was going on when something else happened, so the classic past continuous in English. It is also used for situations that English describes using „used to do something“ and for descriptions of situations in the past.
