After taking precious advices, I hv firmly realized that you are the real legend & Gold medalist with extreme knowledge of shotgun handling. ALOT Of respect to you👍
I enjoy your videos. It’s amazing how much difference the pitch can make. I had a Miroku sporter that after 50-100 shots would leave me with a sore face for several days. After some advice I played with the pitch and ultimately added a pitched spacer. Now I can shoot that gun quite happily with no ill effects.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes pitch can be either a friend or enemy. Too little and you will have a sore face and too much and you can have a sore shoulder.
I have a FN Belgium Winchester 101 and it beats the heck out of my shoulder. I'm going to add the spacer to take the pitch out and see if it helps. I'm used to shotguns but this thing leaves me sore
I very much like the idea of the DIY pitch wedge. I might make up a couple of these for my 870 Express to see if they improve the felt recoil a bit. I'll likely use heavier/harder wood than balsa, though; that's gotten expensive (as well as hard to find locally, meaning I'd have to order a bundle to get two small wedges) since wind power turbines started using a lot of it for their blades.
What’s the impact on POI when the pitch of the stock is changed? A lot of people says that pitch is only a confort measurement, but I have the impression that when I change the pitch in my guns the POI also changes.
It's a great question. In theory pitch shouldn't vary POI greatly, however if changing the pitch allows you to place your head/face in a significantly different position on the comb then it can dramatically change where the point of aim/impact on a shotgun
Gday Russell thanks for the great videos. How much pitch was with your Beretta? was it about 50mm. I have a D grade Browning with a curved kickpad and it is hard to make it feel right on the shoulder and I have always had a red mark on my shoulder.
My Beretta has about 35mm of pitch when measured at the 28" mark of the barrel. This is pretty typical. A curved pad can be a problem especially if you haven't got the cast at the toe figure correct (watch the video we did on this topic). You cannot buy a Perazzi or a Beretta with a curved pad for a good reason!!!!
@@GoShooting I have measured the length of pull and because of the curved kick pad the measurement in the centre is 10mm less than the heel and toe measurement. My top barrel was approx 35mm from the wall at 30 inches when stood up
@@GoShooting Thank you for this info...you basically hit the nail on the head with the problems I have been having with an MX8 I have been using since April...which has a curved recoil pad and is causing I believe, the muzzle jump I get. I tried a colleague's shotgun of almost identical stock dimensions but with a straight recoil pad .....the results and feel were significantly different....thanks again !
I've used a 3/8" tapered pitch adjustment shim but I still feel the recoil pad is impacting the top of my shoulder first. It would seem I still need to take out more pitch with this gun. Not sure how best to take more pitch out.
Hi Russell, I’m a junior shooter going into my fifth competition season so I figured now is the time to alter bits on my gun and try things. Just wanted to ask, if I alter the pitch on my beretta to make it more “positive” would that help me keep my head on the gun? I have the tendency to lift my head. I have an adjustable comb and have raised it slightly as it was VERY low.
I wouldn't generally think pitch and lifting your head are related unless the gun (through its lack of pitch) is giving you some cheek slap. If the recoil is not bothering you I think you have answered your own question as you may simply be lifting your head to see the target properly due to a bad habit you have learnt from shooting a very low stock. Have you patterned the gun? What is the % above and below the aiming point?
Hello Russell, My gun does have some muzzle jump. Not terrible, but noticeable. One question for your regarding pitch. If you do change the pitch to cut back on muzzle jump can it change your POI?
Small changes in pitch shouldn’t alter your POI too much, but your muzzle jump may not be caused by the incorrect pitch it could also be the cast at the toe. Have a look at that video also

Wow. Amazingly explained. Love watching you channel.
Cheers
Very good explanation, much appreciated!
The muzzle jump brings bruises on the cheek too! ESP with 12ga pump guns.

If it’s hitting the top of your shoulder you may try more pitch
Good one
Thanks

I like the content of your videos. Far too much rubbish from some others. Keep up the good work. Rob cpsa senior coach.
Thanks Rob, hope you guys are safe over there
