Thanks for this walkthrough. I also have several of those orange handled HF picks, and they are great for many uses. The dental picks are a good idea. 👍

YW - Glad to help. Of all of the tools, my picks seem to get the most use. Very versatile

Another item you could add is a 6" magnetic bowl for your parts tray. When Harbor Freight has these on sale, they go for $1.99. The metal parts will stick to the bowl.

Thanks Roger. That assumes the parts are magnetic, but a good tip nonetheless - Best wishes - Dennis

Dennis you left out the most important tool you use more than any other tool, your knowledge.

I most use the Chapman driver set I put together, my Tekton hard handle pick set, and I use the WRIGHT Tool 1/4" drive kit that I put together, then theres various pliers tweezer and the parts brushes.
I don't use the entirety of my extensive Chapman set or my extensive WRIGHT 1/4dr kit on fishing reels though, and they are only extensive kits / sets because I put them together for use in other repair applications.
From reels guns and airguns for the Chapman set to bicycles small engines and other such things for the WRIGHT 1/4 set, I always have way more tools on hand than I actually need when working on reels.
I have my general purpose tools in the main shop that I use for whatever from a random loose fastener here and there to building/ making something, then I have my more dedicated/ specialized tools like the Chapman set and other gunsmithing tools in my small hobby shop / mancave.
I like having specialized dedicated tools but also prefer to buy the best quality hand tools I can afford which to me means American made.
I won't say it's wrong to use standard flat blade screwdrivers on fishing reels but I never do it.
Reels guns and airguns use screws with a straight cut slot and it is best to use parallel ground drivers or use as much care as possible, if you have to apply any kind of real torque to remove a screw a normal taper ground driver tip just isn't a good idea.
They don't offer the variety of precise sizes widths and thicknesses either because normal V slot screws don't have as much variety.
It's much harder to strip a screw slot with a propper fitting parallel ground driver than a regular driver thats " close enough ".

For me the tools are as much of a hobby as the things I use them on are, so the WRIGHT 1/4 kit was kind of a pet project goal of mine.
I started with the 2426 ratchet a few years ago and really loved it so I decided to build a kit / set around it.
I added the " flex handle " ( breaker bar ) then the flex head ratchet and a spinner handle, then the sockets metric & SAE standard & deep well.
Then came the extensions 1" 2" & 6", universal joint, bit holder, driver bits, a bit ratchet, and some screwdriver sockets.
I went further adding the other things I tend to use along with the 1/4 socket set, ignition wrenches, hex keys, a few small screwdrivers, a couple picks, a small inspection mirror, then the 4" pliers Channellock #424 and #524 slipjoints.
It evolved over about 2 years but before I knew it I had over $400 into the kit, but It was well worth it to achieve my goal with a 100% American made kit that does everything I wanted and then some.
I couldn't have done it without the Snapon party box which is a proper functional mini steel tool box that came as a case for a collectable poker set 30 years ago.
It's the key to the kit since it holds everything in a compact grab and go format.

I use a Wheeler soft blow/brass hammer made for firearms repair. They have a nice punch set as well. Amazon is a good source for Wheeler products

Dennis, I use the same set of micro-screwdrivers that you do. I got them from my wife who used them for repairing band instruments as she was a band director for 30 years. I’m going to send you some photos of my workbench. I have to use an arm mounted lighted magnifier because of my vision limitations. I have the complete set of the Mitchell tools that included three parts. I need a st of deep sockets but I have a few work-arounds for them. I have about three sets of different micro-pliers. I have two sets of snap-ring pliers as well as several different soft-blow hammers. A lot of these tools I got at a craft store that was going out of business. My bench also has a small vise on one end and an electric bench grinder on the other end. I guess all of us have our own ways of using and even creating our own tools for specific uses. I have a nice Drexel tool set that occasionally comes in handy as well as an attachment for my cordless drill that I use to remove unwanted fishing line off of spools. This was a good idea for showing someone just starting out working on fishing reels what the basic necessities are. Great video! - Chris

Thanks Chris - you are right, no two benches are the same or tool preferences.

Dennis, I wondered if you ever used the OEM tool that came with a vintage reel. Like the Pflueger Little Giant?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 года назад

Sure do. Sometimes you cannot work on the reel unless you have the OEM tool.
      Thanks - Dennis

What would be your recommendation on the best built saltwater reel in a 3000 size in the $50 and $100 range?

Good video once again Dennis. What size wrench do you use for a spinning reel
