    You rarely find a movie with so little dialogue that makes you care so much about the characters and their relationship. And that is mostly due to the incredible performances of both actresses. They conveyed such deep emotions, that by the end I was touched. Great film.

    The fact that this film functions on little to no music, and original music at that, and still manages to remain as beautiful and compelling as it is is a testament to the filmmaking on display. I finally got to see it (in theaters too), and I’m just in love.

      @@PetrolPatrol it's actually a harpsichord and both it and the ending scene are renditions of Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Summer). The acapella music at the bonfire was written for the movie and seems inspired by contemporary composer Caroline Shaw. I think the relative lack of music is meant to simulate Héloïse’s lack of experience and fascination with music. Apparently the director was very attentive to the timing and flow of scenes to point of counting steps between actress'.

    I wasn't bored for a single frame of this movie. And I have incredibly annoying ADHD. This movie captured my attention from the very beginning up until that last long shot. It was tragic and beautiful. Happy and bleak in its use of isolation. It reminded me SO much of late 19th century literature where you're holding your breath hoping characters who are stuck in situations beyond their control find some way to be happy. I think the secret language lesbians and women in general had to use back then plays a huge role in the film. Music played a huge part in tying them together even after the climax. Everything worked.

    finally got to watch this. Stunning. Extraordinarily captivating. The set up of the movie (the artist who must study her subject during the day so she can paint at night from memory) puts us in her perspective which allows us to study her subject with her. It is a novel film experience to just be able to stare at a person for long periods where they are not engaged in some dialog you need to listen to or performing some activity you need to attend to. You just closely observe this film. Every freaking frame. Actually a tribute to Kubrick's lenses created for Barry Lyndon- you have perfect balance and color rendition even in extremely low light single candle lit scenes. A very intimate film.

    I hope Celine Sciamma gets to make a biopic on Alice Guy-Blache who is the first female filmmaker in history and a forgotten pioneer of cinema on the same level as The Lumieres and Georges Melies. It's a juicy role that I think either Adele Haenel or Noemie Merlant could fill. It would be awesome to see their take on the infancy of the medium in France and later in America as seen through the eyes of this unofficial mother of cinema.

      Her eyes are FIERCE. I really appreciate that both women are beautiful but they aren't "movie star" gorgeous. I hate using that as a comparison but I often feel like Hollywood leading ladies are overly glamorized or flawless (hair, skin, teeth, etc), like you would never actually run into anyone who looked like them because they don't exist outside of Hollywood. Perhaps that was a part of Celine's intention with her actresses; she didn't want them to appear as objects but as subjects.

    • @joycei5926
      @joycei5926 4 года назад +2

      Adele Haenel (Heloise) is pretty famous in France. Celine wrote the part of Heloise with her in mind. Celine had a hard time finding Marianne. It was important to her that they are seen as equal in all aspects. Noemie and Adele are the same age, same height and built. Both are also left handed. And born/live in Paris. Apparently when Celine put them in frame together, that’s when she knew she found Marianne. Lots of good back story. Also it’s a low budget period piece which in itself is already tough. What a master piece. Wouldn’t have worked if not for great acting by Noemie and Adele.

    Based on what I've heard from your review, Chris, I've come to the conclusion that after some thinking, Celine Sciamma would be great in directing a biopic about Chris Stuckmann.
    Presuming that the film spends most of the runtime around his reviews, Celine's mastery of performance conveying in a film can be useful in showing the subtext of how Chris feels about his life outside his movie reviews, and additionally the movies he is reviewing can also serve to add a layer of depth to his character!
    I don't know about you guys, but I think this is a perfect directing choice. Regardless, I would be interested in hearing who else you have in mind for the direction of a Chris Stuckmann biopic.

    I was confused when he said it was shot in 8K as 35mm has a native resolution of 8K, so doing some research the director wanted a raw digital look from an 8K camera because using film felt old and timeless. Weird choice but I respect it just hope it doesn’t have that overly clean sheen look that the newer higher end cameras give off.
