'Deception... disadvantage because that's a grown man' and Matt's nod of approval. It's so outlandish that there's no reasonable way anyone would EVER try to actually pull something like this off. But then you just roll two nat 20s like a boss.
I love that, somehow, this chaotic family works as follows Dorian: dad Orrym: mom Darriax: idiot son Ferne: cluesless daughter Opal: crazy aunt, no one knows which side of the family she is from
@@tatsusama3192 Opal and Ferne are both aunts: Opal being the aunt that constantly has a red nose, and Ferne being the one that just never left the 60s.
As a DM, you would want to say... "Even with a 20, folks are somewhat puzzled...", but then the player rolls X2 20... !OK...!, guess the lady helping you is a bit blind or light headed.
Her handling of that situation was a wonderful example of a way to DM that I'd never have considered. I've always expected that a "well the dice say so, so screw logic" kind of approach would break my immersion so hard I'd nope right out of the game. However it fit perfectly with Abria's fun, lighthearted tone and instead I found myself crying with laugher that the ludicrousness of that plan working!
@@Baraz_Red Yeah, if you didn't impose disadvantage, a nat20 is just the top 5% of how well things could go. That's not *that* rare. Especially since nat20 ability checks aren't "crits" in the rules, unless you house-rule that way. (Brennan Lee Mulligan does, and really likes to have fun "honoring" a nat20, which can get interesting with his improv training and skills. I think Aabria did this soon after playing a character in Pirates of Leviathan on Dimension 20 with Brennan as the DM.) But here, when they were already rolling at disadvantage, nat20 is a 1/400 chance. That's rare enough that full success is still on the table, with a more unusual explanation for why. Especially if you have a decent +persuasion modifier. Opal's a warlock, so Cha is her primary stat, with a +3 modifier from her Cha 17. She's not proficient in it, IIRC, but 23 is still a pretty solid roll. DC20 to 23 sounds reasonable for that level of shenanigans, especially if you're accounting for some of the situational difficulty with disadvantage. (e.g. that Orym is armed and an adult *male* halfling.)
@@chad8767 - Yeah, agreed. Especially in a game with a less "serious" tone like this one, it's great. I think my point was that a nat20 with disadvantage deserves way more "honoring" even if you were playing in a more serious / realistic tone. It really does deserve to be treated like a truly critical success, because it's 20x rarer. --- In a game where you're trying to be more realistic and serious, the DM has to be more careful about allowing a roll at all if a nat 20 is an auto-success, though. Because some things just aren't realistically possible, like a human jumping over a 40 foot wall. Even in a kind of "silly" game, you wouldn't let a nat20 athletics do that. Or for a nat20 on a straight roll to go way beyond anything you might have hoped for, that's fun but can bend the narrative to be more silly if you aren't careful. Like I said, that's not always a bad thing if you care more about the fun in the moment than the realism of story you're telling, in cases where those things might be at odds.
@@averagegirl7113 Yeah mine too. All I wanted for Gilmore after campaign 1 was to find someone who will love and support him. I'm so happy now when it happened
Liam's mannerism during the whole Gilmore encounter says "I'm seeing my ex again for the first time in years and I might not be 100% over them and feel just a tiny little bit awkward. I don't know what to do with my hands. Geez I'm so happy they're doing well because they deserve the world."
I now desperately need someone to write a comic or cartoon of Opal and her daughter Nancy who clearly is a 30 year old grumpy man but for some reason nobody sees it. The dryness and "oh fuck" in Liam's face when he said mother just did it for me.
The party using pretty idiot energy to hustle cheaper deals out of the magic shop is SUCH a perfect reintroduction to Gilmore's shop. Poor Inanna, she's adorable.
"awh! And I got a nat 20 /sigh" "No you didn't! Not with that prefo-" "Ohh! A second one! I got 2 nat 20s!~~" The dice have decided. This grown ass man is Nancy now.
The funny thing is only Dariax's intelligence is actually low with an 8. Fearne is next lowest at average human intelligence, 10. Both Dorian and Opal have 12s, which for me makes me think Opal's idiocy might be an act, we'll see with time. And lastly we have Orym and Little Mister at 13. The group really isn't that dumb, just chaotic as shit. Three out of five characters are chaotic neutral. Then there's the fire elemental monkey that's unaligned, but given his form is a monkey acts chaotic and self serving anyway. Dorian is chaotic good, so really he's manly concerned with the morals of their shenanigans, not the hijinks themselves. That leave Orym, quiet unassuming Orym. The only member of the part that isn't chaotic essentially relegated the role of babysitter. Which to clarify, after reading this all back before posting, it sounds negative, but that's not true. I'm loving the party and Exandria Unlimited.
@@13vatra Even though Robbie says Dorian is CG, he's acting awfully shifty about 1) his identity (which we now know "Dorian Storm" is a pseudonym) and 2) his desire to hold onto a *known* evil artifact, despite being unable to actually use it himself. Then there's also throwing Gilmore under the bus by pointing the Nameless Ones at him (we as the audience know that Gilmore can take care of a few bandits by himself easily, but _the party_ doesn't know how powerful he is). Clearly he has ulterior motives, and whether they're for "good" reasons or not is TBD.
If I had a nickel for every time one of Ashley’s characters offered to cut of their hair for someone else to use, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
Orym’s quote: “It was a great idea, I think that it just suffered from too many additional layers. I think the core idea was strong.” Any review of a TV show that falls apart after season one.
I'm amazed by how much Liam is obviously touched by interacting with Gilmore again :) (Orym is meeting him for the first time, so it can't really be him rp'ing Oryms feelings) And next to him Ashley is even less able to stay in character and sighing and making heart eyes all the time xD And it honestly just warms my heart. Really shows how invested they were in their VM story.
I love the contrast between Liam constantly making everyone aware of how short and comparably small he is physically, and Aabria making a point during the Nancy scene to describe Oryms very much mature bone structure and muscular physique, to the point that if Opal hadn't gotten two Nat 20's no one would have believed that he was a child.
One thing I appreciate with Aabria as DM, specifically for Critical Role, is that her style, to me at least, seems so different than Matt's that it's almost impossible to compare the two. I think this is an amazing choice to first hand show everyone what Matt himself means with "find your style of DMing". Awesome stuff, awesome DMing, can it please be a Monday .)
I appreciate it as well! First, it was bizarre that they receive so much inspiration and everyone can roll all the time (skill checks). But since the DCs are very low most of the time, it doesn't really matter anyhow. It's fun to see them watch, telling a story together without having the dice play an essential role.
@@louis1372 Yea i also get the feeling that she play a lot more into what will happen unlike Matt who sticks much more to the dice. I never really get the feeling like any player would die in this campaign for example. Or if they do something cool it feels like it will almost always succeed in a lesser or greater way
I feel like I can speak for everyone when I say the town distraction had me rolling. From burlesque, belly dancing valley-girl Matt; to Nancy and Opal; and Ashley and Robbey being back up floutists. It was just pure chaos.
Don't speak for me. One time is funny, two times is fucking annoying no? Third episode of absolute chaos and aimlessness is getting a little tiring. They're consistently wasting half the session performing the most mundane things in the most unnecessarily chaotic and overcomplicated way possible. You'd think with this much experience there'd be a little more direction here. Sometimes having a no int party is a bit of a disadvantage. I just hope they don't keep doing this the whole time. I don't mind gags and jokes here and there and some dumb fun every once in a while, but they have done in 3 sessions what should be done in 1.
@@Mike23443 I respect the opinion that you're putting out, but if it annoys you then maybe you shouldn't watch. This is game and they are playing to have fun not necessarily to entertain. They picked out things that they find interesting to play for themselves. Just thought about what you said and decided to also state my opinion.
"I give Dorian the look a spouse gives to another spouse" I love how Liam and his characters are always at least a little bit gay for the other players/PCs
You people always have to sexualize everything. That was just a way to denote the type of look, being a bit intimate, and showing the jokey-we know each other admonishment look.
@@BigCowProductions I mean, yes, but given the contexts of Liams other characters being canonically Bisexual, it has a gay connotation; also I don't want to assume your intentions, but "You people" is rarely used in a non-bigoted way, so either please rephrase it, or say it with your whole chest.
I LOVE Liam, Ash, and Matt, from YEARS of watching them create the most unique content I’ve ever seen..... but ga’dammed if I can’t tear my eyes off of Aabria for all the looks and 4th wall breaking she does. She is a 1-man marching band. I can’t look away. She’s a gem.
And as lovely as Aimee seems to be as a person...I don't think she entirely gets how to play D&D. It's her first game ever, so understanding is there, but the unexplained outbursts and 'acting for the camera' rather than roleplaying with the people as the table is a little hard to watch, IMHO. Robbie's pretty quick on the upbeat though, likely had some improv experience, I enjoy him. :)
Aimee: "you should become an actor!" Matt: "I don't know, I've hung out with a lot of actors, they're all kinda terrible people." Ashley: "I've heard that too, the few that I've met, I just hate 'em" the fact that this line happened in a group of actors/voice actors is absolutely hilarious
1:52:38 "The people of the quinceanera"and "Don't you lie to me you beautiful boy" But seriously the way Aabria does Gilmore is just spot on and beautiful. Also Matt is a troll and I love him as Dariax
I just gotta say that the move Ashley made with the charm person at the end was fucking amazing and a great play. That and what Matt did at the end was very smart as well. Essentially showing Paska that they fucking lied to her and that they actually still do have the crown was a fucking amazing way to get the heat off of Gilmore. I hope now that she knows they lied and didn't actually sell anything to him that she will ignore Gilmore all together and just run after them.
Matt(or Dariax)'s play there was smart in that it manages to untangle the web of lies enough that there won't (hopefully) be collateral damage. But in an immediate sense, that is the most idiotic thing to have done from a self-preservation standpoint and I love it so much.
@@josh___something Maybe so, but what I took from that is that it wasn't really a Dariax play, but it was a Matt Mercer play. I think Matt was kind of freaking out and was scared for Gilmore considering he is his NPC. So I think he was searching for anything he could do to put the heat off Gilmore and he was like "Well the one thing I can think of doing is showing her we fuckin lied out of our ass"
@@jw__11 technically speaking it is an optional rule with String instruments you can use Dex however, we know for a fact that She did not based on her rolls previously xD but it is a option
I know the fandom is mostly super loyal to Matt to the point of being hyper critical of Aabria in his favor, but I really need to express how much I love her style as GM. She's brilliant, and compassionate, and SO funny. And I love the rapport she builds with everyone. You can tell they felt safe and comfortable in her care
Idk man i never got that feeling. Sure its fair to say their is probably some of the hyper critical of abria but even after thinking on it long and hard i just like her less and less as a dm. Ive said it before she has some good points as a dm but she is not even remotly close to having the level of ability to be dming on a top dnd show. Let her start her own dnd show and im 99% sure it wont go even remotly well for the first game. Unfortunatly or fortunatly since its critical roll their wont be any critiques coming from the cast since its not what they do. And if the new peolle did say anything public they would more than likely cast out silently and shunned. The story continuity was to chaotic and not well developed, the pcs seemed to be confused almost constantly, the communication Errors were astounding causeing to many dm vs pc intent conflicts. she was very heavy handed with her railroading, which appeard to be cause by her inability to get the stories intended course across combined with her poor managment of setting up pc character development causeing constant issue with the pcs going will idk what to do, or her forcing the crown to be worn when she clearly didnt want to. She was kinda cruel to a specific pc though i dont think it was intended but her ability to read the situation and respond accordingly was lacking to the point of no recovery.
@@skaternutxOriginal I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea what you're referring to for most of this comment. I'm interested in other perspectives here, but I literally can't tell what incidents you're referring to. Aabria railroads a bit more and has weaker NPCs than Matt on average, but I think her willingness to let the players run away with creative scenes has allowed for some amazing moments (like the music contract scene)! She's different, but I still think she's great.

@@skaternutxOriginal honestly I think your just a bit biased towards a certain type of dm because there is not really such thing as a bad dm stroke and Aabria does an excellent with hers. In my own opinion I like aabria as a dm better than Matt that’s not to say Matt is awful by any means but he has to create a show and so he gets very invested into the game which is great but I feel aabria is able to do much more as a dm because she a balance of serious and light hearted moments.
@@masonguthrie1257 if its possible to be good at something its possible to be bad. Violence is always the answer if you're good enough at it. "As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero." Vaarsuvius, _Order of the Stick_ "A hero is someone with the strength of heart, courage of spirit, and might of will, to go to strange lands and enact violence on things there. We go to places where there are things that must be destroyed, and we destroy them. Wandering from town to town, getting into trouble, meeting in drophouses and taverns, getting into scrapes with the law, and otherwise finding ourselves engaged in all manner of tomfoolery and shenanigans, sometimes violent, sometimes fatal. Yes, fatal; and a hero is a violent wanderer who enacts their will bloodily and with strange magicks upon the world." - Arthur Aguefort, Principal and founder of the Aguefort Adventuring Academy, _Dimension 20: Fantasy High, Episode 1: the Beginning Begins_
Watching Matt as Aarabria plays Gilmore was fun and heart warming. The way he's smiling during the interaction and at times taking it all in. Aabria absolutely nailed that character. The interaction and nuance felt the same as I remember from season one. She's doing a great job.
Jesus. Thats so weird. And percy is in his geting up there in age. Like idk percys age in c1 i always assumed mid to late 20s so hes like mid to late 50s. And its ammusing cus he just gets wrinkles his hair doesnt change. Maybe balds a bit
"So we need to sneak into the city without attracting attention..." What follows is a burlesque dance performance with backing musicians and someone shouting for their fake lost child. It's like they were competing for which party member could attract the MOST attention.
I've seen a few memes about that throwaway NPC which the players latch on to like glue, and I've never really felt like it applied to me. Then Aabria portrayed Inanna, and I wanna pat her on the head and tell her it's all right.
The dynamics that Aabria and Aimee get into in every episode have me gasping, they are SO good! Also, why TF is Aabria so smooth?? I need to get my game on her level 😂
The hilarity of Dariax is firmly on point with Intelligence as the dump stat and wisdom just a smidge higher but still subpar. I did not see it coming when he decided to factor the discount in an unexpected manner.

I'm curious to know if this still holds true with the FCG backstory and the whisper bits in C3
I have to give it to Abria for just absolutely respecting the Nancy natural 20.
I think Aabria did this soon after playing a character in Pirates of Leviathan on Dimension 20 with Brennan as the DM.)
But here, when they were already rolling at disadvantage, nat20 is a 1/400 chance.
@@Peter_Cordes playing with skill checks can be crits just adds fun to the game IMO
---
In a game where you're trying to be more realistic and serious, the DM has to be more careful about allowing a roll at all if a nat 20 is an auto-success, though.

I'm amazed by how much Liam is obviously touched by interacting with Gilmore again :) (Orym is meeting him for the first time, so it can't really be him rp'ing Oryms feelings)
And next to him Ashley is even less able to stay in character and sighing and making heart eyes all the time xD And it honestly just warms my heart.
I love how much inspiration Aabria is giving out. She is genuinely loving the stupidity and absurdity, like all of us Critters.
And he creates so much space for her. He never leaves his lane as a player. He's setting a great example of how DMs should behave as players.

I've seen a few memes about that throwaway NPC which the players latch on to like glue, and I've never really felt like it applied to me.
Then Aabria portrayed Inanna, and I wanna pat her on the head and tell her it's all right.
"I'd like everyone [NOT YOU] to give me a stealth check" - dyyyyyying
Dariax trying to pay 900 gpld for 600 then only getting convinced to pay 600 because of a ‘hard bargain’ is freaking hilarious
Goes with his INT of 8...Just look back at Grog with his INT of 6, he was constantly overpaying for things (much to Vex's dismay).
"Do you need an adult?"
Things working out for Dorian in roleplay because he’s pretty versus things going so very wrong for him in combat is the perfect juxtaposition 💀
Also loving the fact that a lot of Dorian’s cuteness factor is just Robbie’s personality carrying over from real life
At 2:49:10 did ANYBODY hear Liam bring out Caleb to talk about amber? Or was it just me LMAO
Ashley sure did.
me: trying to figure out how they end this in 5 episodes
I'm from the future: They don't
TPK always works
then actually making it a sort of prequel to campaign 3 was really smart
somehow they've managed to be more chaotic than Mighty Nein
They have damn near topped vox machina and mighty nein. And its only been like a week in game.
Laura Travis Marisha Taelisen Sam arent here. Different group dynamic. Sam would be great with this group!!!
The dynamics that Aabria and Aimee get into in every episode have me gasping, they are SO good! Also, why TF is Aabria so smooth?? I need to get my game on her level 😂
"lost in the memory of something long ago" *flashing back* She-e-E-ERry bABy, Sherry baby
I had always wanted more of her in campaign 1 and this is very much making up for that.
YES!!!
"Are you a... BARD?!" Lol...
I cheered when she said it was sherry!!
The hilarity of Dariax is firmly on point with Intelligence as the dump stat and wisdom just a smidge higher but still subpar. I did not see it coming when he decided to factor the discount in an unexpected manner.
Paska: Everybody sleeps
Vax, somewhere in the court of the Raven Queen: *draws his daggers*
Imagine Vax escorting souls one day and The RQ tells him today’s soul is a special one. Dear Lord. He will not have that.
And my immediate first thought was: "The last time an assassin tried to kill Gilmore in his sleep, they were force crushed into oblivion. Good luck."
@@FireBowProductions If something happened to Gilmore we Vox Machina would decide it's time for a reunion.
@@FireBowProductions Ah yes, the glorious spell of "Fold Person"
