  • Here is another very old film - the 28mm film gauge was introduced by Pathe Freres around 1912, so we know that this little novelty/trick film was made in France before then. The reference number in the UK Pathe 28mm catalogue was G031b (normally two little shorts were supplied on the one film spool).
    ..
The original French cinema release title in 1908 was "L'Abeille et la Rose" - dir: Segundo de Chomon. I believe there was a Pathe stencil colour version produced. The Queen bee is captured by a spider......
Certainly interesting to see that various methods of trick photography & animation were known about over 100 years ago!
    ..
We know that the Pathe film studios in Paris often used the dancers from the famous Folies-Begere theatre, so maybe these girls are from that venue.
    ..
The 'KOK' used on the title refer to the name of the 28mm projector - maybe connected to the well known Pathe cockerel trade mark.
I don't think this item was later issued on the 9.5mm 'home movie' film gauge ....

(Thanks to enthusiast Martyn Stevens for this excellent transfer!)
