I stayed up late on a school night specifically to hear this session, my first ever Wedding Present song and my first ever John Peel show, just because a girl I fancied said she liked them. Gedge would approve of that reasoning I think.
David Gedge and Peter Solowka demonstrating why guitarists usually pick with their dominant hands and fret with their less developed hands. The pick-hand rhythms and speeds are incredible.
At the time I used to think I was the dude, playing punk bass in a couple of bands. Then one night listening to the radio I heard this. Completely changed my approach to music. Thanks Dave.
Thanks ever so much for posting this; a version that is, in my view, far superior to the one that later appeared on Bizzaro. Takes me back to Xmas '88, Peel's Festive 50 and all that. Thanks!
You're absolutely right...a friend used to record the festive 50 for me each year and i can remember long train journeys home listening to this as well as every other gem Peel's festive 50 used to throw up.
Even as a teenager, being on the barrier for Take Me, it was marathon, thousands pressing forward, getting through it at the end of a gig was brutal, and I wouldnt forego any of the memories I associate with this song and those 80s and early 90s wedding present gigs.
Oh my God! What a title in the NME (or was it MM?) "From Russia with love". And that in mind - nowadays Mar 2022 - that Peter Salewka (guitar) had a ukrainian background. History can be so cruel...
What a tune!. late Eighties. Reading Festival 90 with the Pixies. Bristol Uni early 90s. I love the Weddoes. What was the name of the Gedge splinter group in the late 90s I saw in a pub in London? Christ knows. But by god I love this tune and others.

I’m not sure the Wedoes and reasoning were ever in the same room. Except after the fact. But yeah I loved them too.

Hah! It's difficult to even _air-guitar_ along with 'em for the duration!

Just the best. My favourite song of all time. Headphones on and get lost in the noise with the melody emerging. Love it.
I used to try how many guitars where in the mix. Never got it right.

Fantástico!! Guitatarras, guitarras y más guitarras atronando los cielos de Europa.
Makes me cry every time! Thanks so much for posting!
Oh my god I forgot how much I LOVE this song and band. Takes me back but still sounds ahead of it's time. Goose bumps!

Warm hands and the things you say you get lovelier every day
Absolut unglaublich !
Le roi de la cocotte.
Sorry, I don't have the english for that.
the bizarro version that followed this lost the edginess that this has. The lead guitar sadly gets lost in the background on that version.

Go Gedge
orange slices and a fall lp
I knew David a bit in the 2000s. One thing about him is that he is very keen on toilet hygeine and insists that you bleach the bowl after every use.
This potentially explains everything...
