    Yay! I bought a house and I'm moving there soon. If you have a greenhouse you probably could survive, plus people from the mainland couldn't just come over and rob you. Also Newfoundlanders tend to work together and help each other so would probably pool resources.

    • @daphneraven6745
      @daphneraven6745 Год назад +7

      @Xmx2772: @Nate: Yep. People do traditionally work together, but over the last few there’s a lot that’s changed in the city at least.
      We have people that go around at night and just break into others cars and houses. We have a neighbourhood type app, and people are sharing the security images of the actual criminals breaking into their cars and trying to get into their houses.
      The police won’t even show up to investigate. And word is they can’t even get the police to come get the video or have a look at it.
      As for the idea that people don’t just show up at other peoples’ houses to rob them, during the last heavy snowfall, it became a thing that criminals were actually climbing the snow drifts just to walk directly into second- and third-story windows and balconies specifically to rob others’ houses.
      In the winter time, the days are really short. A person sees a little bit of sunlight just before starting work, and it’s dark just as the kids leave school.
      There can be snow into June, and if the ice flows come in, the temperatures will be subzero at that time, so that crops can’t even be planted, and when the ice finally subsides, the short growing season may not be long enough for the food gardens to mature before the frost hits. So it’s important to know that, and really to make the best of the years were you can do those things. It’s just that It seems that most people have lost the skill set. Some are reclaiming it, but in the last 20 years, it seems that people have chosen to just buy what they need and to surrender their independence.
      At the best of times, ice keeps ferry services with goods & services from crossing to the island. When that happens, produce doesn’t arrive. Nothing else does either.
      Not much manufacturing happens here these days, and although most people had enough land to grow enough food for their families, most people have sold off any extra land that they had for other people to build on. So food is mostly purchased and brought in. This means that there are real problems Such as high cost of living, and and availability problems when the ferries cannot get in.
      Even though there’s lots of fossil fuels right offshore, and it is being harvested, and there is a refinery right on the island, for some reason, fuel is trucked in. It is expensive. And dependent on the ferry service.
      There are people that put up solar panels, but again you’re dealing with heavy snowfall much of the year, and sometimes we have rain drizzle and fog for weeks on end. So the person spends a great deal of time trying to keep those panels exposed to enough light for them to do their work.
      A person might expect To see lots of wind jacks, but the winds can be really high.Many communities have laws and regulations that prohibit their use because of the noise, but the truth is, the winds gonna be so high at times, that they would pose safety risk. Back when there was a railway system here, there were such high winds that in at least one of the province, that a person was paid to live in one particularly bad spot, to gauge the wind. It was so high at times, that it would just blow trains off the tracks. So, although I don’t know of many people that have tried to set up wind generators, I can show you the remains of the attempt. Just like I can introduce you to a lot of well-qualified guys who’ve had to try to keep radio towers up. The weather is no joke.
      That’s not easy for most people.
      Particularly when you consider that a person often has to get up early to dig out before going to work.
      And the people that work together tend to be people that have made friends. In an exceptional situation, people do pitch in. Many like to work together, but a lot more people are in the house playing video games these days, instead of out doing social things. So they’re not putting in the groundwork to have those relationships in place. If you don’t normally work together with your friends and neighbours, you probably won’t have that in place later. People will get sick of it really quickly if you’re basically making yourself a big babysitting project for others, instead of becoming involved in a reciprocal sort of community situation.
      Nate says that we have lots of Fish and game. This is true. Except the fishery collapsed a number of years ago, and it is heavily monitored; the people only have the right to jig fish, in limited numbers, once or twice a year. It is possible to angle, certain times of the year, and if you’re not from here, you have to have a license for trout, and if you are from here you need a license for pretty much everything else except possibly smolt and capelin... In the area where I’m from, the local fisherman a few years ago, during capelin season, Formed the chain across the mouth of the Harbour, and caught every single capelin that was on its way into spawn on the beach. So there are no longer Capelin for the people to collect in that place.Everybody knows that it happened, and the authorities refused to do anything about it. because capelin are not glamorous or high-profile.
      Nonetheless, there’s nothing of that very important species for anybody to have anymore in that area, Because that species returns to the area from which it was born in order to reproduce. Since the entire spawning population was wiped out, none will come back. All the other fish species depended upon that one population, so that harbour looks pretty desolate.
      Nate, said that we have a relatively long growing season.Yes, compared to Labrador, we have a longer growing season. But you really need to take a look at the zoning map that gardeners used to have really accurate idea as to what to expect. We have to buy short- season seed varieties for our gardens, or we don’t get to see our food ripen. Many years, the growing season is not long enough to ripen fruit on the few fruit trees. Most of the apples that grow here are ornamental or crab apples, for example.
      And as for that Picture of that deer that was shown at the moment when Nate, said there was plenty of game, you need to know that we don’t have deer. There are members of the deer family, moose and caribou, but those are the only species.
      Years ago, people died of exposure and starvation all the time. But people also lived because of the social ties. If everybody is struggling, a persons who has spent no time with everyone else as a rule, will be viewed with suspicion if suddenly s/he starts showing up wanting stuff. The same is that person would be anywhere else. Let’s be clear about that.
      The smallest communities that are isolated along the coast, with the highest probability of recovery of the resources, or suffering from something new. The government is reducing the requirements to shut down communities. That means that the smallest places with fewer people in them, who would have a better chance Of benefitting from better recovering resources, are losing neighbours, Medical personnel, electricity, and access to supplies. Those would all have to be personally retrieved by boat, from other areas, By you personally in those situations.
      So, you need to know what you’re walking into. Anyone can come move in; but if you’re looking for a situation where you’re going to be surrounded by supportive people in hard times, who will be glad to see you coming through the door, Take the time to make the friends and get to know the culture. Be a contributor, and you’ll probably be fine. Some of the finest, beloved, and competent Baymen I know started off as mainlanders, but they’ve all embraced the lifestyle and culture.❤️

      @n1uk : Yes; There are good things in many sheds. That’s true. But tools are only useful to the person who knows how to use them.
      And people only lend tools to very trusted friends. experienced people do not take on freebie jobs for others who have not taken the time to form bonds and reciprocal relationships. they certainly don’t let people outside of that chain have to use at the shed unsupervised. And probably not even supervised.
      you know what I’m saying is true.

      And a lot of us do have woodstoves. That’s true.

    • @daphneraven6745
      @daphneraven6745 Год назад +1

      @@Qasibr : Now you’ve pinpointed it. Taxes here are high, along with the cost of living. If you make $100,000 a year, which most people don’t, check the tax guide to see what your percentage of taxes would be. It’s the reason for which we can’t keep medical professionals here. No joke. The ones that are here are often here because they’re from here, and don’t have any debts to pay.
      We have a lot of transient medical people here that come in from other countries, but they only stay long enough to get established so that they can take lucrative jobs on the mainland or in the states.
      There are lots of places where every time a person sees a physician, it’s basically a new graduate or an immigrant, and a different one every time they go back to the doctors office. As a result, especially seniors can end up with a long list of meds, some of which conflict with others, causing major problems.
      And the waitlist for certain specialists can be nearly too long for the patient to survive. And that was before so many healthcare workers were dismissed for not wanting to take inoculations about which they were not able to find reliable data.

But here you’re talking about very slow moving, nearly standing water. It’s a lot easier to heat an area that doesn’t have much movement than it is to heat an area of a river, with its’ fast-moving water.
      Since the water wheel is specified to be for the production of energy, there is a bit of a catch 22 going on here; it’s one thing entirely to generate electricity and use a portion of that to keep the water immediately surrounding the intake of nearly still water warm enough not to freeze, but it’s entirely another to heat things up when water is moving past the structures fairly quickly; and it’s another entirely to prevent heavier chunks of ice from jamming things up.
      but if you go ahead and construct one and find that it works really well year round in this environment, perhaps you’d be kind enough to publish your sketches and share a link with us here. If you can make it user-friendly enough, I’ll be very interested in giving it a shot myself.

      @@northboy7996 Yeah I wouldn't call this an accurate depiction of Newfoundlands culture Newfoundlands culture is very unique and founded in traditional Gaelic culture. The reason the Caribbean loves salt cod is because they traded with Newfoundland (a country of its own unlike any other Canadian provinces (the biggest difference of them all)) for rum. Newfoundland would trade cod for rum and when the rum arrived it was used to make screech which was historically Newfoundland moonshine. I don't think there's a single place in Canada that can claim the level of culture Newfoundland has in food, music, dialect/language, architecture, history, etc... It's truly the only distinct society in Canada because it has a completely separate history and culture from that of Canada being its own country unlike Quebec. For God sake they don't even eat cod in the maritimes its all friggin Haddock with the fish and chips.

We lack roads as in alternative routes to the highway but we have many bays and inlets for boat traffic and air strips and runways for every type of aircraft.
