Family Backpacking on Killarney Park's La Cloche Silhouette Trail with our dirtbag baby and Dog! My wife Tori and I headed out on this legendary trail the second week of September. We brought our 14-month old baby Wesley along for the journey, and as always, our Husky Malamute dog Buck was at our side. We didn't get the best sleep at the car camping site before our trip started with the wild animal fight outside our tent! Camping in heavy rain and wind on Day 2 was miserable, but the weather calmed a little when we got on the trail. (Fortunately, Day-1 was a lot nicer). Trekking was tough with the added weight of bringing another human along for the trip. Tori carried the baby and all his stuff and I carried all the camping gear and food in my 95-litre backpack that weighed about 65 to 70 lbs or more.
We had about 13kms to go on day 2 and, other than some steep sections of trail, the trekking was fairly level through mature deciduous forest. We compleated "The Pig" where the La Cloche Silhouette Trail ascends a huge hill and follows what's the steepest portage trail in all of Killarney Park. Our Dog Buck was keeping up with us fine and carrying a doggy backpack with his own dog food. Buck has been on other trips with his, including a 160km trek in the Canadian Rockies. A little dog training helped him learn to stay close and navigate obstacles with his doggy backpack on.
It was taking a long time to make distance and that, mixed with our late departure from camp in the rain saw us concerned that we wouldn't make it to camp. What was making things particularly concerning was that our dog Buck was falling far behind. We kept waiting up for him and he was walking very slowly. He seemed to be overheating and it seemed like he'd injured himself somehow. He was limping pretty badly.
As it got darker, we had to make the decision to leave Buck behind on the trail. I knew he knew the way and would continue to follow the trail and our scent to where we were camping but it was a little concerning to leave him behind none the less. We got to camp and I helped get a few things set up and then I went back for Buck. He was a ways behind but was making his way along. It was painful to watch him finally hobble into camp.
At this point, Tori and I didn't know what to do. Would Buck be okay to continue on the trail? We were worried because we had many more days to go and much more rugged terrain to traverse. Would Buck be okay if we let him rest up a day? It didn't seem like it. Could he even make it back the way we came? These were the thoughts going through our head but even worse was the terrible feeling that we would not be able to complete our goal of traversing the La Cloche Silhouette Trail with our baby and that the family vacation that we'd been looking so forward to may be over.

Thanks a lot for watching. For those concerned about Buck (pretty much all of us) he is doing fine now. He was making his way along very well until about the last 2km of our second day. He must have somehow hurt himself on the trail. We needed to push on once we saw he was falling behind to get to our reserved campsite where there was a good place to camp and a water source. We knew that this was also the closest place to make it to where extracting him would be possible if necessary. We considered stopping and camping trailside when he started falling behind but, for the above reasons, it was not the best plan. Buck is about 9 or 10 and has been on a lot of trips with us and ones much more serious than this and, he loves them! Like for ourselves, (who were nursing minor injuries before this trip) we bring first aid stuff for Buck which includes Metacam (doggie Advil) and Glucosamine. When Buck was falling behind and it was getting dark, I knew he would know where we were going and follow the trail. Tori and I had to go ahead a ways to get to camp with the baby and, once I deposited our gear there, I went Back to check on Buck who was about 400 meters or so behind. It was not an easy decision for us to make and we were very concerned. When you’re on the trail, you need to be self-sufficient and injuries can happen to either man or beast....stuff happens and you have to know how to deal with it. We will explain more of what happened and how things turned out in the next video.

Yes, this was definitely an extremely stressful and not ideal situation. Buck is an extremely important member of our family and we love to bring him literally everywhere we go. He’s so excited to be part of our adventures that it seems cruel to leave him behind. One thing we didn’t “capture” was my breakdown crying because I was so worried about Buck and not wanting to leave him behind, but I also had my 14 month old on my back. Buck is a tough dog who’s been through some epic adventures and we knew he wasn’t in grave danger or critically injured. We would never ever do anything to intentionally hurt or injure Buck and if we had any idea he would get that injured we wouldn’t have brought him. Anyone who knows us and Buck know he’s very loved, spoiled and has gotten to live a life full of adventure. ❤️
@@victoriafarquharson Buck is an amazing dog, but old dogs have their day. After seeing Jim speak about the adventures Buck has been a part of, I feel your pain. I'm also in tears, because after hiking 5 years with my Timmie (incl. him doing almost 50% of the Bruce Trail with me in 2017) This year, realizing how long it took for him to recover after a hike, I had to make the difficult decision to stop taking him on hikes longer than 5km, he just can't do it any more. It breaks my heart every time I go out for a hike that he can't come and I can see it in his eyes he wants to come. So I make sure he gets his neighbourhood walks, short treks in the woods and yes, spoil him rotten.

Oh Buck! You have broke my heart. Such loyalty to his master in spite of his considerable pain. I know this doesn’t end well, but what a wonderful, action packed adventure of a life Buckeroo lived.

Very hard to see Buck struggling and I see that he has since passed. I know how very hard this is our dogs are like children to us and we recently had one pass too after 9 months of having cancer and having to amputate a front leg. Uecker was only with us 7 years too short. Buck was an awesome dog love to see him riding on the canoe. Glad to see everything went good in the end on this trip.👍
Ya, he had cancer and we didn’t know it at the time but we think it had something to do with him gettinng hirt in this trip because the cancer was in his right front chest and thst’s where he was limping but we didnt figure out he had cancer for another month or so and he died just after christmas. This trip aas sep. it moves so fast in fogs it’s crazy. We did what we could to save him and soent a lot of money but in the end it was his time. His father lived to 17 and Buck was only 9. We were crushed

You could always clipper the Buckaroo when you're hiking in not winter weather. Would help him stay cooler? Loved the vid. My parents used to hike with me asleep in the carrier too!
Aww, ya we’ve don’t that before but recently was told that their linger guard hairs actually help cool them and that we shouldn’t shave him down so I’m not so sure. This was hard for us, not long afterwards we learned that Buck actually had a growth on his right front chest that was causing pain and laimness in his right front leg. He’s just had a complicated surgery to remove it.
Jim, I now understand about Buck after seeing this video. I was thinking about the trip on Magnetawan River I think it was with your brother Ted. Buck didn't want to get out of the tent a couple times. Maybe he always did that and you would know because you and Tori knew him best, but he was showing signs then I think. I'm sure some people might have an issue with him being out there, or Wesley being out there but Buck lived life to be with you there. He wanted to be with your son before he had to go. He wanted to be with his family. What a great dog. I saw a billboard once that read, dog spelled backwards, is still man's best friend. Keep on creating content from these adventures.
On the Magnetawan he didn’t want to get out because of the bugs which is the norm. It wasn’t a very vigorous trip for him so it may have been effecting him at that time however this type of cancer is very fast advancing in dogs, and well, almost all cancer moves much faster in dogs. It’s not uncommon to see the first signs and then they die in two months. He died just after Christmas 2019 and this trip was in June. Thanks a lot for watching this and for your comments. It was a very difficult and challenging situation to me in. It might be easy to be an armchair quarterback in this situation but when you’re out there experiencing it, it’s a different story and looking back on it I think we dealt with the situation as best as possible. This trip was the first signs of him having issues, limping in his right front leg. It turns into that he had a cancerous lump on his right front chest - we’d thought it was his joints here. We didn’t discover the lump until oct and then but the tome he has surgery it had grown and enormous amount. At the time, we were dealing with a lot of issues with our son’s condition, testing, multiple doctors appointments that were a 3.5 hour drive away and then the diagnosis of him having a physically and mentally debilitating syndrome called Fox G1. We may have potentially noticed the tumour on Buck earlier if wasn’t for all that. It was very challenging emotionally. Then we found out about Buck and spent 10k trying to save him but he ended up dying.
Jim Baird - Adventurer I live in Washington now, but used to live in the LA area. I transport kids for a school district and all my kids are special needs. I've kept the same route for years because these kids are special in so many ways. Each one, with the exact same diagnosis, is unique. Wesley 's diagnosis along with Buck is a lot to absorb. I got into this job because my granddaughter was born with multiple birth defects and is special needs. The doctors told my son that she wouldn't survive. My wife and I cried on the way home and I gave up, because the doctors said there was no chance. My wife reminded me that with God, all things are possible. Long story short, she survived her heart surgery, she wasn't supposed to have normal cognitive development. In two months, she turns ten, dances for me, speaks to me, and is defying her diagnosis. I pray Wesley defies his diagnosis, every child is unique. This year, one of the kids I transport who has never spoken a word said something I've said to her for four years. We are going home now, a perfect sentence. It blew me away! You and Tori will get through this with Wesley. Do like you do on your adventures, don't do like I did and give up. Never give up hope. Best to you!

Corn. Glad Buck is Ok. I was wondering how old he’s getting to be. I had to start giving my Husky metcam and already had her on glucosamine and Omega 3s. Even had a round of Gabapentin this spring after slipping in the bush. Senior dogs still wanna have fun and make your heart cry. Glad he’s feeling better.
The doggy pharmacy comes with us on camping trips now.

Scott Rodman thank you sir! Buck is an amazing dog. Externally well tempered and an bush dog who was not a pet that I got when he was 4. I couldn’t have trained him so well myself I sit think.
Agonizingly right decision, have to keep your son safe. Buck has ran shorelines alone for kilometres on his own tracking you while paddling rapids, he is a very special dog. Knowing you, I’m sure you would have re-walked the trail all night to find him and then carried him back to your campsite.
By the time my third child was born, backpacking and camping was just as comfortable as being home. It was something we did all the time. Our youngest was a month old on her first backpacking trip, a twelve mile in twelve mile out overnighter. My wife carried her in the baby pack along with a few items we could strap on to it. I carried the bulk of our gear and our older two kids carried their gear plus a little of the food. Our German Shepherd carried his food plus the adult beverages. It was an amazing family trip that our two older kids still talk about 22 years later. I always encourage people not to be scared away from the outdoors just because they’ve had a baby.
Just reading this gave me goosebumps. I totally get it after this trip with the baby. It was definitely not our first but it was our longest with him yet and the memories I made and the stronger bond you make is undeniable. Thanks for sharing that!

Hi Jim, thanks for replying about Buck. AND his update: Yes I agree that we need to be prepared for any injuries be it human or animal. The Bond you have ....nobody can take that away from you. It is another journey that you will need to carry. I’ve come to love Buck due to the bond I had with my boys (working dogs) you become one soul almost a marriage and a tight team. Buck is a family member and will always be loyal to you. My heart is still very sore 💔💔 😭😭 I’m just so emotional right now about your best furry friend Buck. Special hugs for Buck 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Wow! Just caught your channel! You and your wife are amazing! Your pack and Buck kind of overshadowed the pack Tori was carrying! Which looked like no easy feat either! Especially trekking some of that rough rocky terrain with elevation and descents. Yikes! Yes, poor Buck! I know you're very concerned and love him. My 11 year old dog started laying down on walks with me, right in the middle of the path, like Buck. He had some arthritis too, but later i learned it was his heart. Anyway, sorry it had to take this long, wonderful trek for it to materialize. Keep on trekking. We'll keep on watching! Love to you and family. It is and it’s well named! Killarney is so beautiful. That’s the first time I’ve seen a corn plant growing out there like that though. I thought that was pretty cool.
This loop is best done backwards. Start hard and end easy. Just my opinion though:) Glad to watch any Killarney journeys. Happy Buck is okay too!!

Jim, I really liked this one. Everything about it was great. You have a wonderful family. I just did a similar trip with my family (17m old son) in Grundy. It did not go as planned. The weather was great, but travelling with a baby is another level of extreme. It's not for everyone. Looking forward to this series.
Ya man, it definitely ups the adventure of it all. I also find my self constantly more concerned out there when the baby’s along but of course we’re prepared and none of the things I worry about happen. In the end, what I got out of this trip traveling with the little one was a closer bond with him and I thinks that’s because being out in the woods with him struck a primal cord in me that maybe came out of the added fear of having him along.

I think it is funny how the Alone producers are training the people who go on to do a much better job of making wilderness videos. Your 14 day solo in the Yukon is ... is ... I don't know how to describe it words can't do it justice. It is good, great, fantastic. One suggestion - I wish you would say more about your equipment. I would like to know what equipment you bring on your trips.

poor buck! we were on a backpacking trip in the early summer and the same thing happened to my newphews dog. We ended up carrying the dog for 1.5k. At camp after a long rest and some food and water, the pup rebounded and was fine for the rest of the trip.

Thanks for always sharing the difficult stuff in both an honest and raw way. By putting it out there you're bound to get critics but it also makes your channel the best outdoor channel on you tube. How you don't have over 1 million subs I have no idea. Can't wait to see e.2 to see how you deal with the challenge of Buck coming up lame. We can all learn from your experience (as always) as I'll bet many wouldn't have thought of this problem until seeing your vid. I think you made the right decision to go ahead and set up camp. Nobody can help Buck if they are exposed and at risk themselves (Wesley is #1 too...)

For example, in my upcoming video I’m in the remote Yukon on a river that sees very little travel and my cloths are soaked. It’s also just been raining. I cut down a small cottonwood poplar out of a thicket and used it to build a drying rack. Then I cut down a standing dead tree for firewood and use some granola bar wrappers as tinder to get the fire going. And I mention how using garbage as tinder is a good way to get a fire going in a pinch.....I imagine I’m going to hear about these things.

Poor Buck....my heart is hurting 😭for him.....he’s getting old and maybe time to hang up his harness. I woke up one day and harnessed my seeing eye dog and he suddenly kept stopping and panting and I was told to keep up with my boy....it was time to retire him. It broke my heart 💔 and he was 8 and a half years old. He went on to live until he was 15 .....To this day, 30 years later, a day never goes by when I think about him. I still miss all 3 working seeing eye dogs. I out lived them and my other pet dogs that were German Shepherds who were 18 years old before passing away. I loved all my pets. Recently I lost my Cat Bo who was a Persian cross Ragdoll . He was a rescue boy. He was 15 yeas old when we had to make the hard decision to lay him to rest. 😭💔 I’ve come to love Buck too ....and feel for him and think how you will be feeling right now. Huge Hugs for Buck please and some kisses . Thank you so much ...

The Bond you have ....nobody can take that away from you. It is another journey that you will need to carry. I’ve come to love Buck due to the bond I had with my boys (working dogs) you become one soul almost a marriage and a tight team. Buck is a family member and will always be loyal to you. My heart is still very sore 💔💔 😭😭 I’m just so emotional right now about your best furry friend Buck. Special hugs for Buck 🥰🥰🥰🥰

The plant by the fire pit is a corn of some varitie could be anything from maize to popping corn. Hope the oll Buckaroo is ok he looks like he's got my sore hip :) he's still smiling tho, hard core family fun, keeping tuned for ep2 Piece :)

Yes, really is beautiful there. We’re going to have a look into a couple different options for Buck too.
I had a Kelty baby frame pack. My boy Alex loves to hike when he was younger. We took him tent camping at 6 weeks....lol
The outdoors are definitely in his blood.

That’s a good idea for sure. We do bring metacarpal and some other first aid stuff for him. Poor guy must have gotten hurt somehow. I think now that he’s older he’s more susceptible.
yeah, hard when they get older... easy to see he loves being out there, though! i'm hoping maybe its something simple and easy, like a cracked pad, thorn stuck... maybe pulled muscle... if its age, he might not make the long, rough terrain walks much anymore or maybe pull him on a sled. hoping for the best for buck!

We thought he’d injured his right front shoulder joint but it turned out to be a tumour on his right front chest

I think he hurt himself somehow and we didn’t see it. He’s doing better now.

Haha, ya...a dirtbag is a term for a hard core backpacker, rock climber or person who spends a lot of time in the outdoors. So, it’s actually a compliment. I imagine if you don’t know the reference it might seem strange for sure. Thanks very much for watching 🙂

Thanks a lot, Buck is doing a lot better and he actually just got back from doing a five day canoe trip with Tori. He didn’t have any issues on the portages which was great to hear but of course, most of it he got to snooze in the canoe so it want anything highly rigorous but ya, he’s doing way better for sure!

@@JimBairdAdventurer I'm definitely not a hiker lol. But it was definitely cool to see the park from a different perspective rather than from a canoe. The weather sucked though, cold and rainy quite a bit.

Buck is doing okay, he’s still sore though. I hope he gets better and that it’s. It a permanent thing. Backpacking with a baby is more nerve racking because you’re always worried about their safety etc. for the same reason, being in and traveling in nature with your family strikes a primal cord and you bond more with them. That’s what I got out of this experience anyways.
I don’t know if it’s necessarily harder but definitely more stressful... I’m usually bringing way too much stuff when we canoe with him so it’s hard to pare it all down to the bare necessities. Wesley seems to love being outside so that helps...
