We recently bought a pantry/hutch which had a good number of deep scratches on surface. This was the first thing I came to watch. Going to try this over the weekend! Thanks!
This is a excellent video! One thing that was over looked was to always test the existing finish to understand what the finish is, lacquer, varnish or shellac.
38yr old here, I know I'm a late bloomer, but after years of renting i finally OWN my own home, and I just want to say that I've fallen in love with this show (tv & youtube clips). I love doing projects around the house and look to find any new ones I can work on, I never go without finding a helpful clip from "ATOH". Also, does anyone else feel that Kevin seems to be the NICEST guy??
He could have used a French wiping technique when I work for a department store that sold furniture I was shown several ways to hid scratches or gouges could have also used a lacquer stick to melt into the scratch then use special lube an a scrubbing pad to buff down the patch so it is even with the original surface
That usually requires re-finishing. Meaning first, removing the original finish by chemical, scraping or sanding; second, addressing the water damage - it may need oxalic acid if stained; thirdly, applying a new finish that matches the rest of the piece.
Don't stain your wood, find natural colors that work for you. Then use a hardwax oil. When the wood is scratched or there abrasions, simply sand the area down and add a hardwax oil only to the areas that you sanded. Make it easy.
Hey guys, let's lift the whole heavy chair onto the table, and then remove the top half and lower it back down to the ground, instead of just taking off the top of the chair on the ground.
*_Amateur scratches!_* Come to my house and I'll show you some *REAL* scratches! I have two cats that have scratched nearly every wood surface within reach throughout my house!
@ This Old House just watch this weeks show, season 43 episode 25. Where does Kevin get off calling Tom “pops”? How disrespectful. Plus it makes him sound like a jackass. He should apologize for his disrespect.

Very big thumbs down on what was my favorite show for over 40 years allowing norn Abraham to leave with no mention from any of the cast members or producers the man was this old house every week he and Bob villa would work on all types of houses giving the public there first look at life on a construction sight showing home owners that they had the ability to do some of this work that had been clouded in mystery for so long norm was a pleasant intelligent soft spoken man who was a magician with wood his knowledge in the early episodes from a you man who had never done television had what seemed like a contractor and home owner in Bob they gave generations of viewers the feeling that they could tackle some of this work or at least no. What the pros where talking about norm where ever you go of to I thank you and Bob for showing me things that others in the trades didn't want to show anyone I started in construction the year this old house premiered the first house was right down the street from my house my grand father because of his name got and invitation to the grand opening and I went with him I met Bob villa and norm just because we had the same first and last name as the producer it was a different world then and you kept us up to new techniques and advancement in tools I felt proud of my trade because of you so thank you master carpenter norm Abram in my opinion and entire episode should be done for you all of the how to shows that came after and the warehouse stores owe you there lively hood the first and definitely the best God bless norm and bob

Nathan's presentation style has gotten so good over the years!
He has definitely gotten better and appears more comfortable in front of the camera.

Remember, the damage is always there! It's just an illusion I was taught this by a master finisher!
Thank You Francis P.!
amazing tips from the Masters. I love this channel
Surprisingly artistic. Great job! I've used the wax filler before, but I rubbed it in, I'll try melting it next time.

So happy you posted this video.. I have several scratches on my floor that need addressing.. perfectly timed video lol

Awesome show, great crews, enjoy every episode
6:35 How would you know what kind of finish you have? Polyurethane, shellac, lacquer?
Yes, the last part of the equation remains mystery to me!
@@stankhomenko6116 This video explained it well ruclips.net/video/Xp4layfBXkA/видео.html
Nathan needs his own show , he's a natural!!
I'm glad I found this video, have a few spots in my oak floor this will help. THANKS ATOH love you guys

French polish is an awesome technique, though labor intensive. Plus, shellac sticks to any base finish. =)
That was surprisingly fascinating 🤔
Very interesting video, very informative.
Excellent video. Now i have to get busy. 👍❤️
I would love to see a similar clip for French polish. Have a beautiful dining table that has a couple areas ruined by water.

I must have “This Old House” cookies in my head. This is exactly the right video at the right time for me. Thanks.
What is the kind of paper/cloth used in there to apply the tint?!
My outside faucet’s handle is broken. It is hard to turn on and off. Can we just change the handle only? Please advise. Thank you.
Magic !!!
So...what do we do when it *does* scratch into the finish down into the stain?

Make it easy.
He is using Mohawk markers and fill sticks by Mohawk!
I couldn't even see the scratch after the wax step. You'd have to go looking for it.
Could you use this method to conceal a water stain in a floor?
What is the name of the first product he used to remove abrasions?
Another great video with good tips!!!!!!!! 👍
He got rid of that gouge real good.
Can you please address how to remove a heat stain on a table top?
Get a new table.
How do I fix water stains on my oak window sills. My wife likes to put her plants there for light but the Potts leaked? Help
look into oxalic acid. not sure of spelling.
Was Nathan one of the apprentices from the episodes of GENERATION NEXT?
Yes
This is awesome
Love the contrnts
How about guitar with wood body?(:
How about real life dog paw scratches on doors ?
❤❤❤❤
