Till the Vietnam war passed. Since then their planes haven't seen much use. No one else's has. That said the Russians, Chinese, Swedes, and the French so make good planes from the onset. They just generally don't get as much use to tighten down their final designs and productions.

"Saab Draken (=dragon) was the first airplane to implement the Cobra combat maneuver. Credit were given to the russians, therefore its known as the Pugachev´s Cobra." That's because while Draken was the first CAPABLE of doing it, it wasn't until the MiG-29 and Su-27s much more advanced aerodynamically lifting body fuselages changed it from a novelty "thing" to something that could be used as a combat maneuver, or reliably at all, even by a regular pilot. If you go look at Growling Sidewinder's DCS channel, for his overall very amusing video of "what would really have happened in Top gun" with an F-14 facing a Su-57, that video has several excellent examples of maneuvers that fall, at least roughly, within the purview of the Cobra, as the Su-57 is even better at doing such extreme maneuvers. And if you look at his or others DCS channels, you will also notice that pretty much anyone flying Su-27 derivatives or the Su-57 will sometimes use the cobra as a very effective combat maneuver(effectively being able to pull your nose around to completely different direction, get a lock on and shoot a missile, and even if missing, get away with it without losing too much energy or making yourself a too easy target). While it's extremely rare for most other aircraft. This is because of how the aerodynamics of the current generation Russian fighters differs in the fuselage design, it's not only a highly advanced lifting body, but it also has much less drag if, for example, it hits the air moving horizontally, while in a vertical position. The engine nacelles among other things basically creates a virtual wedge, so instead of the fuselage and wings acting as one big scoop hitting the air flat, it acts more like a slight angle, greatly reducing how much energy is lost while performing such extreme angle maneuvers. So yeah, Draken could do it first, but the fact that it was relatively good at it was by accident, while for the MiG-29 and Su-27 and the likes, it is a deliberate part of the design.

I'm sure Swedens have made a mid-field goal. Their philosophy of improving ECM instead devoting insane amounts of resources to develop stealth technology that might become obsolescent with a mere crack of technology fingers in a not-so-distant future, seems admirably intelligent... as long as it might really work in a real war environment. If that really works, I will buy me a Gripen E myself !
It works. It would take a long text to explain the ins and outs of it all. Let me explain it this way: the US are only now getting real life emission data from the Russians from the F-16’s Ukraine now fly there. It’s part of the deal. The idea is to build advanced EECM systems. They fool the radars to see nothing where there is a target by sending ”blank” back to the Russian systems. Sweden has sniffed that data since the 60’s.
The Gripen is renowned for its adaptability and ease of maintenance, making it ideal for smaller nations with limited resources. In contrast, the F-35 is a powerhouse in joint operations with unmatched data-sharing capabilities. Which fighter offers a better balance of versatility and mission-specific capabilities?

I don't have a lot of love left over for Sweden or swedes, but one can't deny their quality. From cars, to jets, to tobacco, most of what comes out of that god forsaken land is worth its weight in gold.
You are not quite right there, there is a very big difference between version C/D and E, on the outside they look the same, e.g. the operation system (OS) that flies the plane is completely separated from the OS that handles protection, combat, jamming, etc., which means you can upgrade the Combat OS every week if you want, compare it for example to the problems the F35 has with its OS upgrade, don't think so there is any other aircraft that ever has or had it. and that's just one of the changes.
Great analysis. Many thanks ! In a future video, could you focus on the advantages of being able to disperse one's fleet of multipurpose aircrafts? It seems to be a fantastic tactical advantage that would suit the configuration of the battlefield in Ukraine and other Eastern European countries. What are the choices made by countries such as Finland, Norway, Poland, the Baltic states...? I would also like to know whether European countries are exploring the possibility of mixing Rafales, Grippens and new 6th gen fighters in development in the hope of strengthening their arms industry, their strategic vision... independently of any non European actor? Are any countries already mixing Rafales and Grippens? How logistically feasible would it be?
Here is the thing people who love stealth airplanes forget. If the EW/counter suite is strong enough, you dont need stealth. Since nothing will be able to hit you, while you can hit them with no problems. If a stealth fighter gets spotted it has to GTFO and come back later and try again and pray their billion dollar RND stealth tech is still viable xD.

I am not a specialist on the matter but there are a lot of people here that understand about fighter planes. How would you rate the Gripen when compared with the best Russian fighters?
JAS-39 Gripen ain't exactly new, they've been around since the 80s, the E/F variants however were new in 2019. So it's as new as the F-16 Block 70/72 of the same year. What is revolutionary about the Gripen E/F is its electronic warfare/jamming suit.

India was looking at 114 Grippen NGs for it airforce as per an airforce official. However, the issue with Gripen is that it imports a lot of parts from a lot of different countries and hence cant provide the transfer of technology that India wants. Also, India is working on its own plane that will be comparable to Rafale's capabilities but with a single engine and canards like the Grippen. Currently SAAB is full on trying to sell this jet to India but French and Americans have more diplomatic weight.
This is what Canada should have bought instead the lame duck F-35 for a fraction of the cost of acquiring and of maintenance. But the MIC got to the decision makers.

Best seller F35? If buyers knew what they were doing they would look at how many of the globes total fleet of F35s are combat ready. This would make F35 go down and JAS 39 Gripen become the best seller. Only 1/3 of the total fleet of F35s are combat ready. The other 2/3 are either grounded or in repair. Ja till JAS. Underbart med vår svenska jakt, attack och segelflyg.
This is not a brand new aircraft. Ignorant people are only learning about it now though but it's been developed since more than 40 years ago
2016
You are not quite right there, there is a very big difference between version C/D and E, on the outside they look the same, e.g. the operation system (OS) that flies the plane is completely separated from the OS that handles protection, combat, jamming, etc., which means you can upgrade the Combat OS every week if you want, compare it for example to the problems the F35 has with its OS upgrade, don't think so there is any other aircraft that ever has or had it. and that's just one of the changes.
It's been around for a while, nice aircraft though👍
@@Ormathon Agreed. The French Rafale has what is probably the most advanced EW suite ever put into an aircraft.
So what you're saying is that the JAS-39 Gripen is the Peter Forsberg of airplanes.
Brand new? The bloody things been in service since 1993!
They are one of the best of the best
another Nordic county joins NATO Denmark being first but it’s good to have Sweden in and Finland also all that Norsk power💪🇺🇸🇩🇰
No, norway was first
You are wrong mate. Norway was first.
The North Atlantic Treaty was signed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom - since then others have joined.
You're all wrong, I was first!
@ America is and was first that is the citizens
Jakt-, Attack-, och Späningsflajpin!
Not "Grippen", it's pronounced "Greepen".
He can't pronounce any of the Swedish words correctly. 😂
Brand new fighter which is decades in service. Yes it shocked the wole world. That's why there are so many volcanic outbursts these days.
For close range 。it can win every fighter available n produced.
I am not a specialist on the matter but there are a lot of people here that understand about fighter planes. How would you rate the Gripen when compared with the best Russian fighters?
Why buy American warplanes when the US is USA First. Let's buy European stuff !
Damn! Hes voice is loud!
Where is the new aircraft?
JAS-39 Gripen ain't exactly new, they've been around since the 80s, the E/F variants however were new in 2019.
So it's as new as the F-16 Block 70/72 of the same year.
What is revolutionary about the Gripen E/F is its electronic warfare/jamming suit.
What happened to Saab cars?
The chinese tried buying them, but GM would not allow it. Then Spyker bought (dutch "car" company) and ran what was left into ground, then the chinese actually managed to buy it (or atleast part of the original saab platforms and machinery. (Evergrande) coinvested by swedes turned into NEVS that first tried reopen production of Saabs in Sweden, but failed. Then almost got an electric car out, but a production deal collapsed when the owner, a guy called Mohammed Jihad was accused of antisemitism. Now NEVS in Sweden and the Emily GT project is on ice/hibernation. NEVS in China is producing electric vehicles based on the the 9-3/9-5 platforms they aquired. The Emily GT developed by the SAAB engineers that transitioned into NEVS. Check out the test drive of that car if you want to see some innovation!
Swedish planes are good. Very good. and so is our submarines, smart mixed stuff. thatäs why they should only sell to partners.
Swedish pronunciation is spot on!!🙃
This is what Canada should have bought instead the lame duck F-35 for a fraction of the cost of acquiring and of maintenance. But the MIC got to the decision makers.
I seem to recall reading my own Country Canada may have procured these Fighter Jets from Sweden if they hadn't went with The F-35 from The United States.
@@palmergriffiths1952 The Gripen was never seriously considered by Canada because of it's limited range.
With the exception of Brazil, every country that procured the Gripen is smaller than most Canadian provinces.
Nothing in this World did not Shock my anymore!
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!!
I am ashamed to be Estonian because we dont have no fighter jets and no tanks.
In Sweden we use metric system. 🙂
Skål från Sverige 🥂👌👍🇸🇪
The F-35 and the F-22 have both been bested in mock combat by the Gripen, the Rafale and the Eurofighter.
Never been bested had to not use stealth and other weapon systems to make it fair. In real combat the Rafale and Gripen would be shot down before they knew F22 was there. The f22 and 35 are not dog fighters.
@jonathangalante2829 The F22 was specifically designed for air superiority...One was also 'shot down ' by an Emiri Mirage 2000.
@@canadasleftcoast.5744 You don't get it. Those are not separate units, they are nodes in a large network. Flying sensor suites first, weapons platforms second, with lots of carriers for firepower far in the rear.
It all may be too complex for you to understand, idk... Don't blame me for that.
Doesn't mean stealth was necessarily the right thing to bet on. It might become completely useless in the near future, that's definitely one possibility. Or not. We'll see.
WDYM brand new? its over 30 years old at this point.
Swedish quality as usual!!😊
We live in an unbelievable World of the People doing absolutely nothing to check what Future . Interesting some studies and layers every year but the second class are roboting
Sweden knows its pwn agenda, but stealth ðoes too.
on fact "vigg" actiarly is a bird. adn the name "viggen" means that vigg
Gripen E has a new airframe it's bigger
What, no coffee?
It is difficult to sell a plane with an American engine due to American policies.
Nah, these terms has been hammered out before Saab contracted the use.
We have more secret aircrafts
I appreciate the math🎉
Are you the same person as WATOP account? You sound the same.
It's not brand new. And no one is shocked about it.
I hope for FRED
Jeeeeeeeeez, ive never heard an american slay the Swedish language as bad as this..... U know, we swedes joke alot about "Swenglish" which is smth we use for fun, cuz older ppl cant speak english very well (mainly cuz it wasnt mandated in school back "then") But damn, no matter how far u will try to take Swenglish, it still wont get close to this absolute SLAYING of our language, damn... Maybe u should move out of ur moms basement bro?
But Gripen isn't the new plane.
Rememeber, we swedes never voted to enter nato and we dont want any war with Russia, the majoriity of people wants their nutrality back.
Brand new? Anyone shocked? Nah.
Shock my a$$ . Why every time is about shocking and drama , I am not shocked and mark it dislike
So in a way F35s are already down.
It,s funny dat the basic gripen has a volvo rm 12 turbofan engien😂 im olso swidish so...😇😇😇
Bring back Viggen,js 😊
Sounds like a used car salesman. Hope their planes are better than their polestars!
that's good Sweden can made better Gripen , good news
True dat itsta workhorse not a show horse 😊
Shocked ?? Why ?
We are supposed to last 2 weeks all in all....
So what is the point of making Wallenberg even richer..
Like Ukraine was supposed to last 2 weeks, right?
How do you utter all this nonsense and don't feel ashamed?
@@vmasing1965 I am sure Sweden would last more than 2 weeks if the whole west was supporting,
However Ukr had 35milj people we don´t have that. Our whole strategi is about deterrence and not about "lasting" more than 2 weeks.
And yes.. . I am ashamed to have fellow Swedes who are so naive and ignorant.
@@vmasing1965 Btw,,, have you seen Gripen or Viggen do a cobra or hover ?
@@roki5941 The Cobra maneuver was INVENTED by a Viggen pilot. Later it was falsely attributed to a Russian pilot.
I think it's absolutely hilarious how delusional and misinformed people are. The dumber you are the more arrogant, that's always the rule of thumb... Sad, but also very entertaining. You, my friend, are the entertainment!
@@vmasing1965 Sure and water is not wet... (Worked with Viggen during 12 years and the "Cobra" is completely BS. It´s more of a brick in comparison)
Arrogance is the name of the game in old Svedala.
Stealth is overrated.
Yes, it actually is. As soon as you light up your own radar, the enemy know which direction you're coming from. Withe Gripen E's system, it can fly in formation and deach plane can detect the enemy and triangulate its position and then launch a missile at the source without even lighting up its own radar.
What some people don't seem to understand is that it's all about radar visibility. Some stupid people think that it means the plane is invisible even when you stand next to it.
It is not that radar invisible when looked at directly from above. Like from a SAAB AWACS...
Say that to the latest Israeli attack on Iran..Iran didn't know what struck them..
@ lmao not
@@olivierfaber8478 Iran is not exactly a tech giant and S300 and it's radars are being destroyed in Ukraine by something so primitive (the ones used) as drones.
