1:23:00 I doubt there are impossible technical reasons cameras can't be used directly with phones through a cable. As long as the phone supports OTG on older USB types and whatever protocols are necessary with USB-C and its various versions. Nikon's Z cameras can transfer through the cable at least because I've done it with the Z5. Developer resources and cost are probably the biggest reasons it hasn't been done.
First, a small nitpick: my Sony Xperia PRO-I works as a camera monitor just fine with my Canon R8, or any UVC camera for that matter. It's a pretty good monitor too, with quite a few tools. You can even use a capture card to send a signal to the phone, which lets it work with almost anything. Also, this model has a two-stage physical shutter button, and believe me that you want that first detent. It's harder to tap on the screen when holding the phone in "camera mode", so sometimes having a fixed AF point works pretty well (just AF and recompose). But anyway, for those who want a phone that also works as an external monitor, any of the latest Sony phones should do. I think all have the External Monitor function now. Now, I'm gonna be the "um, akshually" guy today, because I just listened to the podcast and there were some egregious errors. Particularly with the "most influential sensors" bit. You guys, like almost everyone else, seem to have forgotten about Aptina. Aptina was a small tech spinoff company from Micron Technologies that specialized in true imaging sensor innovation. They created (and then licensed to Sony) two of the most crucial technologies used today by most companies: dual gain conversion (yeah, that bit about the A7S is bullsh*t!) and on-sensor phase detection. The first cameras to use both of these advancements were the Nikon V1 and J1, which makes Nikon's bumbling, late entry into full-frame mirrorless even more galling (they were the pioneers after all!). In fact, Type-1 sensors is where a lot of sensor innovations happened first. The Sony RX100 V probably represents the peak of advancements, with a stacked BSI chip that also incorporated OSPDAF, the first of its kind. Previous iterations of this line were the first to introduce BSI and stacking into dedicated photo cameras, years before the A9. Not mentioning any of the RX100 models is a serious omission. And then you mention the D810, which introduced deeper sensor wells that are used on a handful of Nikon models - and that's it. The D800E, however, was the one that truly influenced the market beyond belief: its cancelled low-pass filter lead to substantial resolution gains, which everyone scrambled to replicate as well. Sony soon dropped the LPF in many models, Panasonic did it for almost all their photo and hybrid cameras, and Nikon themselves would stop installing them on most models. Hell, even Canon tried (and failed) to launch a direct competitor, the 5DSR. How's that for influential?

Leah is Amazing (Best to You Leah) !!!!! When I started at my 2nd Newspaper (Largest in Arizona) in 1970, the Photogs used either the Rolleiflex or a Speed Graphic with a 35mm equiv of a 50mm lens... They were between 50-70yo (I was 17yo) I showed up with 2 Nikon F's n 24mm,n 105mm Lenses I was the "Odd One" !!!!!! They did not believe that the photos in My portfolio were made with 35mm Tri-X !!!!!!! Yes I lasted for Many Years :) :) :) When I came back from Europe 2mos. ago,,,,, I had spent 35 days there (Porto n Lisbon n 2wks in Paris) betw 9 to 18hrs on the street per day With a Nikon Z7 n 24-200mm lens,,,,It was Amazing (little heavy) ,,!!!! backup cameras 2 Z50 w/16-50mm n 50-250mm (the Z50 are amazing for street,, BUT...... For the tech support question on f1.8 comparison. The exposure is equivalent like Jordan said but the actual amount of light is greater on the full frame. The iso numbers are not equivalent between sensor sizes beyond comparing relative exposure. The noise difference Jordan mentioned is because the smaller sensor sizes is getting less light. So 100iso on apsc is technically boosting more than 100 iso on full frame. Jordan was right but didn't quite answer the specific question. More light on full frame.
1:23:40 Sony's transfer protocol is very open, there are multiple apps to tether your phone via usb-c/Wifi/lan to cameras for file transfer, life view/monitoring etc. Monitor+, Monitor&Control, Creators App are some of them but you can also just use the phones default filebrowser to access the cameras sd-cards

I was browsing through the Canon museum website and saw that the EOS 5 had an eye controlled focus system, which sounds similar to what’s in the R3/1/5ii. Have you ever played around with one? I keep hearing this eye focus thing is new, and then bam 1992 wants its weird focusing back. Edited because I forgot to add that I loved the interview today. Super compelling and interesting to listen to. Perhaps Leah could come out for a future video?
I had an EOS 3 film camera that featured Eye Control, and it worked great for me. It’s just the modern version that doesn’t recognize my eyes. I agree, Leah rocks and we’d love to have her on for an episode! - Jordan
I don't know about monitoring but you can indeed transfer photos from camera to mobile using usb-c to usb-c cable. Tony Northrup actually showed it some time ago. Very nice and fast feature provided you have usb-c camera and mobile. I have tested it with Nikon Z fc & Android mobile.
I know Jaron has his viewpoints. But if he gets enough opinions from people who do the work, he'll realize that many don't share his views. Like Jeff Cable also shot the Olympics and he had 15-minute deadlines to get the shots, edit them and upload them. He accidentally had the camera in 40 fps mode with precapture. So at the end of the first game he did, he ended up with 5000 shots and only 15 minutes to pick, edit, and upload the key 10 images. Then another 30-40 images delivered within the next half hour. Then off to the next venue. Later on, he dialed back the fps to get back to his normal 2000 shots per game. I know when I'm culling images for a wedding, there's no way I can pare 5000 images down in 15 minutes. I usually spend a few hours getting down to the ones I'm going to edit and deliver to the couple.
I really enjoyed the podcast, guys. Miss Chris and his innuendoes always bring a smile to my face. I have a question about the eye control in the R3, R1, and R5MKII. Could it be that the shape of the eye affects its functionality? For example, do people with eyes shaped like eggs experience different results compared to those with eyes shaped like footballs (or "soccer balls" as you call them across the pond, lol)? Just a thought.
No scientific background - but they have to measure the pupil's position. Everything else is pretty irrelevant and would become difficult between different eye-shapes and -colors. I would imagine that they use some sort of infrared to determine the pupil as there is not much behind it compared to the rest of the eyeball. It should contrast on an IR sensor. Now what would throw IR sensors off? I assume, the Petapapas tested it without contact lenses (apparently Canon corrects for that anyway). So maybe different levels of eye pressure? Varying cornea thickness? Or different levels of tear liquid on the eye? Maybe even different lengths of eyelashes if they block some of the sensors.

Awesome interview with Leah. It doesn't surprise me that Canon sent ALL their R1's to the Olympics... I always believed they rushed that camera out exclusively for PR at the Olympics, and no other reason. Just on the topic of Apple, phones, cameras, and especially cameras like the Leica Q3 (luxury consumer cameras) which Leah picked up, humour me for thinking aloud, but... I've always thought I would have loved for Apple to buy a company like Olympus. They could absolutely have released beautifully designed interchangeable or fixed lens cameras to dominate the non-smartphone camera market. Make the cameras seamlessly communicate with Apple hardware/phones and drag the camera industry into the future with an IOS smartphone type interface and computational features. I know the 'proper camera' industry in its current state is a TINY market for a behemoth like Apple. They're focused on developing the iPhone to eventually make all cameras irrelevant but we're a lifetime away from that, and Apple entering the camera market would grow it beyond our imagination. I just think for an Apple camera to focus on whatever the iPhone can't do would be incredible, giving an option for Apple users to progress easily to 'proper photography'. I also think an Apple camera would completely rejuvenate the entire camera market bringing millions of new users to the industry. Maybe it's just me, but I feel Apple are too focused on killing cameras when they could have dominated and grown the market with the cameras complimenting their phones with tech filtering down (ala Sony) and vice versa. Anyway, thanks for giving me a forum to talk to myself, screaming into space. It's obviously a work of pure fantasy and I'm sure no one actually agrees! 😅
I've just tried the usb connection for file transfer and remote shooting from my a6700 to a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e and it all works using the Sony Creators' App. You prompted my to do it because I've only used the WiFi for being much more convenient. With a caveat that I don't shoot thousands of photos in one go. The WiFi connection works seamlessly and fast enough for me for a couple of hundred photos. No need to even turn on the camera as long as it is nearby and not to mention looking for a damn cable.
I saw Chris once on the Calgary C-Train, we got off at the same stop and walked the same way before he took a turn and I carried on to my office. I did not say Hi because i felt it maybe creepy lol this was a few years back

You should get Jeff Cable on to talk about the R1 at the Olympics -- or at least look at his blog. He shoots for Team USA Water Polo and then whatever else he can, blogging daily at the Olympics. He used the R1 and and R5 II exclusively. (Note: He was the one that broke the R3 at the Olympics when it was first introduced.)
As a spectator I was so annoyed about the unclear photography rules. The official rules said that spectators can bring lenses with up to 20cm length. It was not clear what than means though. Some security said that it means the actual length of the lens, but other said it is the focal length. That can't be true though, because focal length is measured in mm, not cm. So one day I missed a match by Coco Gauff just because I brought a lens than was 19.3cm long, but had a longer focal length. So to be one the safe side, your lens should neither surpass 200mm in physical length nor focal length.
PSA: Any festival, concert, party, large gathering...etc that EXCLUDES "professional cameras" isn't a function you will ever find me in...don't want my camera, then you don't get my money! 😉

That last speed pipe "question" just encompass so much that is wrong with today's tech landscape. Buying a camera is not an entrance ticket to a cult that requires you to defend and minimise any and all potential criticisms of the product, it's just a tool which does a job. I cannot and will never understand these people who seemingly actively prefer to have less knowledge on the product they are buying. Are they under the impression that all products they are buying are perfect? If we take the logical extention of their position, which is to minimise all the potential product downsides and only emphasis the upsides, why do we ever need new products, and more importantly, why even do reviews at all? Hell, why is this person even watching a review? Did they get lost after watching some sponsored influencer video somewhere? Personally I think they got punked buying a Z6III; a used 5D mk1 is probably like $200 and with that you get the full frame aesthetic and great image quality. The fact that anything beyond ISO 800 is terrible, you can't focus it in the dark with either autofocus or manual focus (because you can't see anything in the OVF) or it's slower than a slow thing is completely meaningless. The average user isn't going to notice those flaws in every day use, and if they do, they're just using it wrong.
There were plenty of professional photographers shooting at the olympics in paris with canon. So I guess they are at least slightly usable. So why the hate? You are not forced to buy canon. Go with a different manufacturer that provides what you are looking for.

Since canon is on top, and Sony is in second place, Sony shooters will bash Canon to make their camera brand look better and try to say Sony is the true number 1. When Nikon was in second place, Nikon shooters did the same thing to canon shooters, but since Nikon is 3rd, it’s Sony shooters doing it. That’s all it is.

Very surprised the folk festival allowed cellular photography as musicians hate smartphone pics because they detract from the gig.
24MP apologists?! Is 24MP so bad it's worth apologising for 🤣 I think most people acknowledge that high MP is sometimes necessary but it's for very niche situations. Photographing a rowing regatta at the Olympics where you are quite far away from even the nearest boat I think is niche as are most Olympic events due to TV cameras getting prime location and also the vast number of photographers in attendance. But for soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball and most field sports 24mp and up to 600mm FOV equivalent is sufficent. When I shot the first division rugby matches in Ireland 20mp and 24mp was enough, used a 70-200mm and 400mm, I'm not a pro but most of the pros there were the same. I imagine sports/events like sailing, airshows and equestrian a higher MP could be advantageous though.
The Canon bashing is unbelievable, and the constant Sony promotion is exhausting. There are now tons of video on the R5m2 that say that Canon has produced an exceptional hybrid camera. I am sure the R1 is the same outstanding crop. Truth will prevail against advertising. Canon is an extremely reliable brand, with 60 years history on the market. At every purchase, I was over the top with Canon (since 1990). Time after time. I did never have the same full satisfaction with the company you promote: the TV, the camcorders, etc. Canon will survive, thrive and I hope prevail (I wish Nikon could too).

I think Canon are falling behind. Their flagship falls short and for me the r52 is ok but still behind cameras over a good few yrs old in some features. Credit to Sony for innovation and pushing other manufacs to try and keep up.
In my experience, characterizing the PetaPixel organization (or Petapixel team members) as camera reviewers (in the way in which I understand the word "reviewer") could not be more inaccurate. Petapixel are Sony advertisers and have been for a long, long time now. They never miss the chance to bash Canon and promote Sony. When they can't say anything bad about Canon they will be sure to say "well...yes it's good but I'll just say it: it's not a good a Sony". I agree it is exhausting and boring, which is why I unsubscribed from the channel and stopped watching this video. If not for financial reasons then for personal reasons, Petapixel is, in my judgement, undoubtedly biased towards Sony. Petapixel is entertainment; I personally would never allow their opinions to influence my buying decision.

Editorial direction of PP consists of many strange (and often repulsive) things, but being amazed by 2005 Jobs quote about phones killing music players in the future (taken from one of the most famous biographies ever, which came out 13 years ago) and being inspired by it to write an article in 2024 is next level. Especially considering that we can read in said biography that iPad and iPhone development started pretty early in 2000s. And knowing that in 2004 Motorola released hugely popular E398 phone which had advanced music playing capabilities and even was followed by ROKR E1 model made in collaboration with Apple. Another level for photography-centric website is being inspired to write an article by Statista graphic. Which is based on CIPA data. Which is open all year-round for everyone to look at. And their website has had this exact information for many years. Yes, that CIPA, who is main shipments data source for whole camera industry. What's next? Will PetaPixel suddenly find out that mirrorless cameras take 4 times larger market share than DSLRs now?
Yeah the R1 has decent upscaling inbody feature to 96 megapixels... go crazy cropping! U cant be shooting sports with all raws right? Dont bluff and u cant shoot sport with pixel shift in the A1 or a9iii... it will get all blurry hahaha
Thanks for the podcast and answer to my question about usb-c connection. Jordan's made a point about phone manufacturers protecting their phones from "random" usb-c connection. But Acsoon can do it! And every camera brand has its onw app, which could be exclusively granted a permission to comunicate with a camera. My theory is that usb-c to mobile connection require some specific processing on camera side (albeit Canon cameras easily connect to win and mac computers). And Sony allows connection to their phones. Maybe it is all a Smallrig / Atomos / Portkeys conspiracy 😅

I don't know about monitoring but you can indeed transfer photos from camera to mobile using usb-c to usb-c cable. Tony Northrup actually showed it some time ago. Very nice and fast feature provided you have usb-c camera and mobile. I have tested it with Nikon Z fc & Android mobile.
I know Jaron has his viewpoints. But if he gets enough opinions from people who do the work, he'll realize that many don't share his views. Like Jeff Cable also shot the Olympics and he had 15-minute deadlines to get the shots, edit them and upload them. He accidentally had the camera in 40 fps mode with precapture. So at the end of the first game he did, he ended up with 5000 shots and only 15 minutes to pick, edit, and upload the key 10 images. Then another 30-40 images delivered within the next half hour. Then off to the next venue. Later on, he dialed back the fps to get back to his normal 2000 shots per game. I know when I'm culling images for a wedding, there's no way I can pare 5000 images down in 15 minutes. I usually spend a few hours getting down to the ones I'm going to edit and deliver to the couple.

I really enjoyed the podcast, guys. Miss Chris and his innuendoes always bring a smile to my face. I have a question about the eye control in the R3, R1, and R5MKII. Could it be that the shape of the eye affects its functionality? For example, do people with eyes shaped like eggs experience different results compared to those with eyes shaped like footballs (or "soccer balls" as you call them across the pond, lol)? Just a thought.
No scientific background - but they have to measure the pupil's position. Everything else is pretty irrelevant and would become difficult between different eye-shapes and -colors. I would imagine that they use some sort of infrared to determine the pupil as there is not much behind it compared to the rest of the eyeball. It should contrast on an IR sensor. Now what would throw IR sensors off? I assume, the Petapapas tested it without contact lenses (apparently Canon corrects for that anyway). So maybe different levels of eye pressure? Varying cornea thickness? Or different levels of tear liquid on the eye? Maybe even different lengths of eyelashes if they block some of the sensors.

Awesome interview with Leah. It doesn't surprise me that Canon sent ALL their R1's to the Olympics... I always believed they rushed that camera out exclusively for PR at the Olympics, and no other reason.
Just on the topic of Apple, phones, cameras, and especially cameras like the Leica Q3 (luxury consumer cameras) which Leah picked up, humour me for thinking aloud, but...
I've always thought I would have loved for Apple to buy a company like Olympus. They could absolutely have released beautifully designed interchangeable or fixed lens cameras to dominate the non-smartphone camera market. Make the cameras seamlessly communicate with Apple hardware/phones and drag the camera industry into the future with an IOS smartphone type interface and computational features.
I know the 'proper camera' industry in its current state is a TINY market for a behemoth like Apple. They're focused on developing the iPhone to eventually make all cameras irrelevant but we're a lifetime away from that, and Apple entering the camera market would grow it beyond our imagination.
I just think for an Apple camera to focus on whatever the iPhone can't do would be incredible, giving an option for Apple users to progress easily to 'proper photography'. I also think an Apple camera would completely rejuvenate the entire camera market bringing millions of new users to the industry.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel Apple are too focused on killing cameras when they could have dominated and grown the market with the cameras complimenting their phones with tech filtering down (ala Sony) and vice versa.

I've just tried the usb connection for file transfer and remote shooting from my a6700 to a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e and it all works using the Sony Creators' App. You prompted my to do it because I've only used the WiFi for being much more convenient. With a caveat that I don't shoot thousands of photos in one go. The WiFi connection works seamlessly and fast enough for me for a couple of hundred photos. No need to even turn on the camera as long as it is nearby and not to mention looking for a damn cable.
I saw Chris once on the Calgary C-Train, we got off at the same stop and walked the same way before he took a turn and I carried on to my office. I did not say Hi because i felt it maybe creepy lol

You should get Jeff Cable on to talk about the R1 at the Olympics -- or at least look at his blog. He shoots for Team USA Water Polo and then whatever else he can, blogging daily at the Olympics. He used the R1 and and R5 II exclusively. (Note: He was the one that broke the R3 at the Olympics when it was first introduced.)
As a spectator I was so annoyed about the unclear photography rules. The official rules said that spectators can bring lenses with up to 20cm length. It was not clear what than means though. Some security said that it means the actual length of the lens, but other said it is the focal length. That can't be true though, because focal length is measured in mm, not cm. So one day I missed a match by Coco Gauff just because I brought a lens than was 19.3cm long, but had a longer focal length. So to be one the safe side, your lens should neither surpass 200mm in physical length nor focal length.

That last speed pipe "question" just encompass so much that is wrong with today's tech landscape. Buying a camera is not an entrance ticket to a cult that requires you to defend and minimise any and all potential criticisms of the product, it's just a tool which does a job. I cannot and will never understand these people who seemingly actively prefer to have less knowledge on the product they are buying. Are they under the impression that all products they are buying are perfect? If we take the logical extention of their position, which is to minimise all the potential product downsides and only emphasis the upsides, why do we ever need new products, and more importantly, why even do reviews at all? Hell, why is this person even watching a review? Did they get lost after watching some sponsored influencer video somewhere?
Personally I think they got punked buying a Z6III; a used 5D mk1 is probably like $200 and with that you get the full frame aesthetic and great image quality. The fact that anything beyond ISO 800 is terrible, you can't focus it in the dark with either autofocus or manual focus (because you can't see anything in the OVF) or it's slower than a slow thing is completely meaningless. The average user isn't going to notice those flaws in every day use, and if they do, they're just using it wrong.

There were plenty of professional photographers shooting at the olympics in paris with canon. So I guess they are at least slightly usable. So why the hate? You are not forced to buy canon. Go with a different manufacturer that provides what you are looking for.

Since canon is on top, and Sony is in second place, Sony shooters will bash Canon to make their camera brand look better and try to say Sony is the true number 1. When Nikon was in second place, Nikon shooters did the same thing to canon shooters, but since Nikon is 3rd, it’s Sony shooters doing it. That’s all it is.
ChatGPT must be a BIG help in finding out what's interesting about a sport you're not familiar with. Artistic photos may be appealing to most people, but probably not enough for sports coverage.

It's NOT musical artists who request the suppression of professional images by non-pros at live gigs, it's the record companies. Very surprised the folk festival allowed cellular photography as musicians hate smartphone pics because they detract from the gig.
24MP apologists?! Is 24MP so bad it's worth apologising for 🤣 I think most people acknowledge that high MP is sometimes necessary but it's for very niche situations. Photographing a rowing regatta at the Olympics where you are quite far away from even the nearest boat I think is niche as are most Olympic events due to TV cameras getting prime location and also the vast number of photographers in attendance.
But for soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball and most field sports 24mp and up to 600mm FOV equivalent is sufficent. When I shot the first division rugby matches in Ireland 20mp and 24mp was enough, used a 70-200mm and 400mm, I'm not a pro but most of the pros there were the same. I imagine sports/events like sailing, airshows and equestrian a higher MP could be advantageous though.

Traveled to Himalayas, Thailand with Sony A7R3, 28-200mm, 24mm, gimbal. Tiring. Sold the whole lot and bought 360 X4, DJI A4, P3. Best move.
The Canon bashing is unbelievable, and the constant Sony promotion is exhausting. There are now tons of video on the R5m2 that say that Canon has produced an exceptional hybrid camera. I am sure the R1 is the same outstanding crop. Truth will prevail against advertising. Canon is an extremely reliable brand, with 60 years history on the market. At every purchase, I was over the top with Canon (since 1990). Time after time. I did never have the same full satisfaction with the company you promote: the TV, the camcorders, etc. Canon will survive, thrive and I hope prevail (I wish Nikon could too).

I think Canon are falling behind. Their flagship falls short and for me the r52 is ok but still behind cameras over a good few yrs old in some features. Credit to Sony for innovation and pushing other manufacs to try and keep up.
In my experience, characterizing the PetaPixel organization (or Petapixel team members) as camera reviewers (in the way in which I understand the word "reviewer") could not be more inaccurate. Petapixel are Sony advertisers and have been for a long, long time now. They never miss the chance to bash Canon and promote Sony. When they can't say anything bad about Canon they will be sure to say "well...yes it's good but I'll just say it: it's not a good a Sony". I agree it is exhausting and boring, which is why I unsubscribed from the channel and stopped watching this video. If not for financial reasons then for personal reasons, Petapixel is, in my judgement, undoubtedly biased towards Sony. Petapixel is entertainment; I personally would never allow their opinions to influence my buying decision.

Editorial direction of PP consists of many strange (and often repulsive) things, but being amazed by 2005 Jobs quote about phones killing music players in the future (taken from one of the most famous biographies ever, which came out 13 years ago) and being inspired by it to write an article in 2024 is next level.
Especially considering that we can read in said biography that iPad and iPhone development started pretty early in 2000s. And knowing that in 2004 Motorola released hugely popular E398 phone which had advanced music playing capabilities and even was followed by ROKR E1 model made in collaboration with Apple.
Another level for photography-centric website is being inspired to write an article by Statista graphic. Which is based on CIPA data. Which is open all year-round for everyone to look at. And their website has had this exact information for many years. Yes, that CIPA, who is main shipments data source for whole camera industry.
What's next? Will PetaPixel suddenly find out that mirrorless cameras take 4 times larger market share than DSLRs now?

Thanks for the podcast and answer to my question about usb-c connection. Jordan's made a point about phone manufacturers protecting their phones from "random" usb-c connection. But Acsoon can do it! And every camera brand has its onw app, which could be exclusively granted a permission to comunicate with a camera.
My theory is that usb-c to mobile connection require some specific processing on camera side (albeit Canon cameras easily connect to win and mac computers). And Sony allows connection to their phones.
Maybe it is all a Smallrig / Atomos / Portkeys conspiracy 😅
