Funny story about Hellhammer. My friend and I met "Tom G Warrior" at a Celtic Frost show in Portland, OR around 1985 (the show was them, Running wild and Voivod) and he was a REALLY nice guy and chatted with us for about a half hour. As we were talking some dude came up and said "You guys are great, you sound a lot like this other band I really like called Hellhammer!" When the guy said that Tom turned to Gary and I with a big grin and said "Hellhammer? Who the hell is Hellhammer??" the guy said, oh dude, I didn't mean anything and disappeared.. The album name actually comes from the name of a human skull, which King Diamond acquired somehow back then and it was said, that it belonged to a witch named Melissa, who was burned alive. That's what the title track Melissa is about basically. It's one of their best songs, so maybe check that one out next!
I think he took it from his friend's father.. who was a medical teacher and had a drawer full of skulls/bones. He brought it home and wondered about the person's life and eventually came up with the story about melissa

Just before recording this album the producer asked the band for lyric sheet so he'd know what he'd be working with. After reading it he came back to the band asking "You guys SURE you wanna press THIS on vinyl...?!"
Mercyful Fate! Let's go! First two albums are brilliant for the time waayy ahead of everyone else. And those 90s albums got some great songs too, especially In The Shadows. Time, Into the Unknown
I was really just searching for older bootlegs of this song performed live, but gave your video a shot. Your grin is contagious, so I watched the whole thing with a big ol smile on my face. Always a pleasure to experience THE KING with others. Cheers, brother.

Don't break the oath is an amazing album. First I ever heard and been my favorite metal band ever since 17 years ago. The song A Dangerous Meeting is amazing. Its the first track and had me hooked instantly. Rewound the first 30 seconds when his voice kicks in like 50 times when I first heard it.
I saw the King back in 2014 and at the end of one song he went straight into this and the place went completely mental. Afterwards he just looked at the audience, hung his head low for a second, and went "You're not going to let me get away with playing only ONE Mercyful Fate song are you?" To which we all collectively shouted "NO!" And he went into Come To The Sabbath. Come To The Sabbath and The Lady In Black are my two favorite Fate songs and either is my recommendation.
My favorite tune of theirs, I think. That first verse truly epitomizes dark metal: I was born in the cemetery Under the sign of the moon Raised from my grave, by the dead. And I was made a mercenary Oh in the legions of Hell And now I'm king of pain, I'm insane! It took me a while to come around to King Diamond fandom, his singing specifically, but musically he's always crafted solid heavy metal.
This song is great & the lyrics lol ! You can start with any early Fate stuff - Melissa, Don't Break the Oath, & Nuns Have No Fun ep (their 1st). 'Desecration of Souls' is a great song off Don't Breath the Oath to check out!
You should know that the lyrics of “The Oath” were entirely copied from the band Coven’s 1969 album _Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls,_ the final track of which is a 13-minute-long track called “Satanic Mass”. I wish that King Diamond would have mentioned them.
Mercyful Fate/King Diamond my fav since I was a kid... I appreciate your video and hope you cover more... I love many genres of music, so I look forward to seeing more of your channel... I was recommended here because of this band, so props to your video🍻
Mercyful Fate was one of the pioneers of progressive metal, and King himself was heavily influenced by bands like Rush, Thin Lizzy, BOC, Uriah Heep, in addition to Alice Cooper and Judas Priest. Interestingly, the opening riff to "Satan's Fall," also on the Melissa album, was lifted from Scorpions' "Polar Nights," found on that band's record, "Virgin Killer" (released in 1976) as sort of an Easter egg.
Actually, Halford was belting out those high pitches since 1982 (Screaming For Vengeance - check that album out, especially the title track), maybe earlier, lol.
@ The Adventures Of TNT: When you want to "start" with MERCYFUL FATE, then take the songs "Doomed By The Living Dead" or "A Corpse Without Soul" from the EP (1982).The first album "Melissa" (she was a fictive witch, so it is not the name of a former girlfriend) came out in 1983. Yes, "Evil" is on this album, but if you ask me, this track does not belong to the great songs of "Melissa". I prefer "Into The Coven", "Satan's Fall" and "Curse Of The Pharaohs". Their best album in my opinion is "Don't Break The Oath" (1984) with superior songs like "Come To The Sabbath", "Welcome Princess Of Hell", "The Oath", "A Dangerous Meeting" and "Gypsy". Btw., "Abigail" is also not a name of a former girlfriend. Abigail was a real person. She was the mother of a girl, which (the girl) died on July 7, 1777.
Before 1974 , in Hiroshima too . And in 1973 Priest too But the way Halford hit the high notes is very different mainly to how King does Halford : Full and mixed voice King diamond : Falsetto .
Nice vid man. A couple of notes... About Rob Halford taking possible influence from King Diamond, its definitely the other way around because you can hear Rob's falsetto on Judas Priest songs like "dreamer deceiver" and "Victim of Changes" which are from '76 while Mercyful Fate started in the early 80's. and Judas Priest has in general been a huge influence on Mercyful Fate's sound which you could hear more once you get more acquainted with both bands. Also Melissa comes from the name of a real human skull king had (tho idk the full story with that or with the name Abigail) And I would reccomend going chronologically from Mercyful Fate to King Diamond as the best route
I know it's a different song but, the most true metal lyric ever is "bring me the blood of the newborn child". I saw MF in 1984... absolutely amazing. Exciter opened and killed it too. Motorhead was the headliner and literally blew the doors open. Still a top 3 show of mine.
6:20 Rob sang like that since 73/74 but used it occasionally then. since 76 he used it more often and sang more raw in 79-83 period but still sang very high. later he sang more high up continiously like he did in 76-79. Check Judas priest - SInner, exciter, victem of changes, dissident aggressor, screaming for vengeance, deceiver, devils child ect. all before 1983. I think its more the other way around as king diamond even did one or 2 judas priest covers.
I think the most "hardcore" lyric in this song is "And when you're down, beyond the ground, I'll dig up your body again, and make love to shame" LOL!!!! "Cold Ethyl" to "Evil" to "A little piece of heaven" necrophilia alive and well in rock music!
You know I've been waiting for a KD or MF reaction when I almost got a heart attack when I saw the video to my homepage. Love this reaction man, thanks a lot for this.
If you're going down the King Diamond road, you have to listen to Black Rose, the band he played with before Mercyful Fate. It's only a rehearsal album and it's immensely popular is the Kings home country.
Listen to A Corpse Without Soul, or any of the songs off of the original EP (Nuns Have No Fun, Doomed by the Living Dead, Devil Eyes) if you want to go all the way back. Those are all classic tracks.
I just watched the "Code Blue," which is funny cuz there are the lines in this song: And when you're down beyond the ground/I'll dig up your body again/And make love to shame. Don't let Tasha listen to this one.

Into the Coven or Curse of the Pharaohs from the same album are good picks to get a feel for early Mercyful Fate. (edit) Doomed by the living Dead! Come to the Sabbath from the second album (Don't Break the Oath) is a classic that he also kept playing live at his solo concerts. Other great songs: A Dangerous Meeting, Witches Dance (there's an official video), The Bell Witch, Egypt (those two are from their 90ies comeback album). Admittetly their mid to late 90s material wasn't as good as their first half of the discography but there's still good songs on every album.

Rob halford has been singing in a falsetto voice since the 70’s. Mercyful Fate we’re highly influenced by 70’s era Judas Priest. However, Kings falsetto and overall vocal style is nothing like Halford’s. both singers are very unique but no other vocalist has sounded like King Diamond before or has since.
This was a brain melting hybrid of new wave of British heavy metal style riffing, mixed with way more Progressive elements and extended musicality. Mercyful Fate worthy act to beat in terms of advanced musicianship in the metal genre brother. At least within the underground metal scene anyway. You can hear in the production that it's not quite metal yet in so much as it is got a hard rock kind of sound to the guitars they had not really figured out the super crunch yet. That transition comes with Metallica and Kill em All. Really one of the first times the super over driven palm-muted guitar crunch. They were still struggling here from an engineering standpoint with diamonds voice here. There is a lot of layers of Reverb And Delay etcetera etcetera that kind of make it sound murky, but it does have a overall vibe to it that is pretty damn spooky. This is considered Proto Black Metal by the way, largely because of the predominance of occult and satanic lyrics. I'm sure someone else's probably touched on this already in the comments, but Halford proceeded King Diamond and was an influence on diamond.
I would love it it you would react to King Diamond's song Halloween on Halloween 🎃 Keep posting your awesome material. Best wishes to you and your woman. Be well, and thanks for all of the hard work you both put in. ✌
Hi T, what do i have to do to ask for a song reaction? I don't know if i have to donate through a specific method (PayPal or Patreon), of course i know i could do that during your live streams but you know... Just in case. Thanks for everything you do on your channel, by the way 🤘 Oh, just one more thing: are your live streams scheduled (besides country music and metal meltdown on Friday nights)? I couldn't find anything about it.
Oooooh, early Mercyful Fate! BOLD move for the uninitiated! I listened to them since 1984, and never really grasped the lyrics so was unaware what King was saying in most songs, lol. Then I got hold of the lyrics (thanks internet), and let's just say I got a little shook, haha. Some pretty DARK stuff! And I had already been listening to it for several years, lol. I sorted it that while King is a self-proclaimed "Satanist", his beliefs/views are more in reference to the philosophy put forth by Anton Szandor LaVey, and King does NOT engage in any of the insidious black mass blood sacrifice stuff that he sings about on the early MF albums. That's my resolve, that's how I reconcile everything, please don't pull at those threads. :-) All that aside, enjoy the KD/MF odyssey!
long souvenir for me this album ,i remenber that,i had 4 track cassette in 1987 ,and i bring this track in school ,and teachers confisqued to me,they said to me,this is too much satanic
That was (and still is) an awsome LP. Classic heavy metal with a twist. But I find it ridiculous to call it Black Metal ... because this is theatre with "horror music" in the spirit of Black Sabbath (although much more contemporary "NWOBHM" sounding). Black Metal is something else. A more naked approach to the barbed wire of life. Whereas King Diamond is the Phantom of the Opera. Closer to Power Metal than Black Metal (and I feel quite confident that he himself will agree).
Dave Mustaine considered Mercyful fate his favourite band before Mercyful fate broke up in 1987. Hank Sherman and Micheal Denner are one of the greatest guitar duos in metal.

Admittetly their mid to late 90s material wasn't as good as their first half of the discography but there's still good songs on every album.
i mean the title track is a great place to start if you havent heard it.
The Beginning version of Evil is amazing imo.
Mercyful Fate will curl/straighten your hair. I was born in a cemetery!
Mercyful fate - Come to the sabbath
A dangerous Meeting is another one you should react to
I have been looking at your content for a couple of hours. I like a lot of what yinz guys are doing. But this really got my attention. My favorite album from King Diamond is The Eye. I recommend you listen to whole albums because they tell a story. Hope to see more King Diamond soon.
🦇🤘😈🤘🦇
You're deaf if you think this is "not quite metal yet" 🙄
@@Wagoo if you go back you might just notice I was referencing the production of the album and the engineering.. not the actual music or songwriting.
So many I could recommend
House on the Hill from the 9 album
Bell witch, anything from don't break the oath, witches dance, the church of St Anne
Every day is Halloween.
King Diamond!!!
I would love it it you would react to King Diamond's song Halloween on Halloween 🎃 Keep posting your awesome material. Best wishes to you and your woman. Be well, and thanks for all of the hard work you both put in. ✌
This Song Is Dope
I believe his original band was Brats.. (not the sausage)
Hahaha hes about to have his face ripped off!
You didn't even get to the best bit of the lyrics :P
And when you're down.. beyond the ground
I'll dig up your body again
And make love to shame!
King Diamond is heavily influenced by R&B. He sounds like Earth Wind and Fire from the 70s.
Hi T, what do i have to do to ask for a song reaction? I don't know if i have to donate through a specific method (PayPal or Patreon), of course i know i could do that during your live streams but you know... Just in case. Thanks for everything you do on your channel, by the way 🤘
Oh, just one more thing: are your live streams scheduled (besides country music and metal meltdown on Friday nights)? I couldn't find anything about it.
React to mercyful fate nuns have No fun🤟best band in -80 or sisters of mercy 🤘

odlicna pesma
Try "Night of the Unborn" from the same album. That song is insane.
perfect for the halloween season
All that aside, enjoy the KD/MF odyssey!
Dude. I saw them live 😂. Don’t ask.
long souvenir for me this album ,i remenber that,i had 4 track cassette in 1987 ,and i bring this track in school ,and teachers confisqued to me,they said to me,this is too much satanic
I recommend you start with Mercyful Fate The Beginning
Ya this.
Try Mercyful Fate A Dangerous Meeting or Gypsy
Great reaction! Can you react to MaxthaDemon...any song, they are literally all good. Thanks!
