  • Welcome to part 3 of my HMDI modded systems with the RetroTink4K test, discussion, and comparison series! In this video, we are putting HDMI-modded N64 systems to the test with the RetroTink 4K to see if an HDMI mod is the best way to go for the system when paired with the RetroTink 4K! The N64 remains one of my favorite systems to date and I was very excited to finally get my hands on an HDMI mod to install in mine. But, was it really worth it?

    s-video colors are ever so slightly muted compared to RGB, and the edges are slightly less defined. but it's way closer to how most of us experienced it.

      Remember, youtube always compresses the colors, so you arnt seeing the real difference in this footage. On a real CRT the difference in colors is quite big between s-video and scartRGB.

      You can apply SDR scanlines color correction or enable HDR on the r4k to make the image brighter and colors to pop :D

    • @ArchadesGames
      @ArchadesGames  6 месяцев назад +2

      So much this! I Can't reliably record HDR for YT so I don't show it off which is a true shame.

    • @PabloB888
      @PabloB888 6 месяцев назад

      @@wobblingpixels3921 In the SDR mode, it's impossible to compensate for the loss of brightness caused by the scanlines without affecting the colors and the gamma. Yes, you can get a brighter picture like you say, but some people may not like the way the colors/gamma look when artificially boosted. I have been using SDR CRT shaders for a long time and the best looking ones only apply a slot mask instead of black scanlines. This gives you a SD CRT-like look (instead of PVM / CRT monitor look) without making the SDR picture too dark and typical SDR LCD screen have enough brightness headroom to compensate for the loss of brightness caused by the simple slot mask.
      Only HDR CRT shaders can compensate for the loss of brightness caused by the scanlines without causing additional problems. so you can use scanlines and any type of CRT phosphor mask without artifically boosting colors and gamma. PVM HDR shaders in retroarch look absolutely amazing on my HDR monitor, but I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to get such accurate look in SDR, so when I'm playing on my SDR GT60 plasma TV I always turn off scanlines and use only slot mask which also make old 240/480p games look amazing. I thought I would have to keep my CRT forever to play old 480/240p games, because the image quality was extremely poor (extreme pixelation and blur at the same time) on my modern LCD monitor. Now however I prefer to play these old games on my LCD because I get even better image quality compared to my CRT.

  • @ChaosGenerator

    Patching the roms to undo the anti-aliasing is a must when playing these games in HD on original hardware. Emulation (when it works) is the one case where it is my preferred option when playing these games on anything other than a CRT where the N64 actually looks amazing but I always have to have an original controller using a converter or the Switch Online N64 controller.

    I decided to use an HDMI mod with the tink 4k to remove all analog noise. I'm not sure if there's something different but analog noise was pretty bad for me. So while mostly pointless but It only $40 I'll take it.

    I have the retrotink 4k and the problem I have with using s video is that I am trying to have all of my consoles plugged into the back of the retrotink 4k since most consoles I own use just the standard composite cables and I am running everything through either an HDMI switcher or a composite switcher box. I am using the RWY n64 cable through the composite switcher box through the retrotink 4k and honestly the video is still pretty amazing with the defaults.

    • @ArchadesGames
      @ArchadesGames  22 дня назад

      If you get a VGA to S video adapter you can use the enhanced video feature for N64 games and have the cable go to the back for a double win!

    Would love to see a quick roundup once you're done with the console-specific "is HDMI worth it with the Tink4K?" videos. Maybe once the RetroGem direct modes are available. It seems like Wii and OG Xbox have the biggest advantages with HDMI mods, but it seems like you might be able get the advantages of those mods without the actual mods.

    I have a tim worthington n64 rgb
    If i couple that with the retro tink 4k will it make the picture much more clearer and sharper? I like the look of the nintendo switch online n64 games. How will the tim worthington n64rgb+ retrotink 4k look like compared to the nintendo switch online n64 games? About the same? Or less sharp and clean?

    • @ArchadesGames

      Switch is using Emulation at 3x native revolution output you won't ever get that result from an actual system. Your results will look like what you see here.

    The N64 is one of my favorite system but let’s face it, image quality was not its strong point. I initially had an unmodded N64 connected via S-Video to a PVM. I then upgraded to a RGB modded one and it’s the smallest jump in image quality compared to all the other retro consoles I have. I lucked out and managed to get a RetroTink 4K last month and I just can’t see what a HDMI modded N64 can bring to the table vs RGB in term of video clarity. Only thing I can think of is clearer audio? But then again, with the Cartridge format, dev had to compress audio files too e.g. resident evil 2. Anyway, I been watching all your RT4K videos and it has help me set up my RT4K.

    • @ArchadesGames
      @ArchadesGames  6 месяцев назад

      Audio is negligible due to the compression already in place. The video is also practically identical. No reason to upgrade to HDMI for Tink use.

      It's a ridiculously priced and poorly built Svideo to HDMI adapter. Why would anyone want to spend $150 to pair it with a RT4K when a $10 Svideo cable would be better?

    Do you think we shouldn't mod any of our consoles and stick with SCART (when supported or component) if we have a RETROTINK? This is something I've been asking myself ever since i saw your first vid with the RETROTINK 4k

    • @ArchadesGames

      CRT effects are the best way to get a clean picture out of an N64 and that requires no mods. If plain pixels are desired an RGB mod is all that is needed.

    You say 480p or 960p. why not 720p? It should be sharp as 720p is a 3x scale of 240p and 2160p (4K) is a 3x scale of 720p. 240p games are much more common than 480i so having a clean 3x second upscale could be worth it.
