- BMW N54 E92 335i HPFP Install: DID NOT GO TO PLAN....
The brand new genuine N54 fuel pump has already arrived. In this video i swap it with the original pump. Everything was going so smooth.... until the test drive.. haha. Nearly got stranded again.
Let me know in the comments if you can tell whats caused the problem. Dont forget to closely check all the gauges before you make your comment!

Fuel level sensor got "stuck" in certain position after installing the upgraded fuel pump and you ran out of gas...? :-)
That's so funny, especially with the price of fuel ATM☺
@@pulsechainpete3808 Absolute classic. Good sport for showing us all, made for a really entertaining vid
Lmao 😂
at the begging of the video I can clearly see the "FP_L" which stands for "Fuel Pressure Low" or "Low Pressure Fuel Sensor" and from what I understand that the LPFS must keep a steady 72psi at almost all times, anything below it means the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor is failing hence why many get Low pressure codes, the car goes into limp-mode after accelerating faster and also get a "Drive-train Malfunction" as well codes such as P10D9, P15DF and P0087 all have to do with the Low pressure sensor/high pressure fuel pump but mostly the sensor to start with as the old version of the sensor is well known to fail do to the design and the latest updated version fixes that problem!
NOTE: The high pressure fuel pump should idle at 700 psi and go up to near 2500psi at full throttle! It the HPFP idles below the 700psi mark every time after installing the new latest Low Pressure Fuel Sensor/ + fuel line then the HPFP needs to be replace as its a clear sign is on it's way out!
Remember when I said the Venturi is there to fill the bucket? By not using the hydromat you risk damaging the HPFP by going dry. This only happens when you cut the bucket bottom or bypass the Venturi system to suck /fill the bucket to give the pump fuel when the tank is low.
As others mentioned , the tank level got stuck so it wouldn’t have been obvious until you did the visual you did at the end.
Fun fact, you CAN actually turn off the car whilst driving in neutral and you can also restart it with slight pressure on the brake pedal. I have done it before in my N54 335i.
Thats what i thought, but as soon as i saw LPFP hit 15 while i was driving i hit the button, so i didn't run the HPFP dry. I thought the car was off, but it kept running (just).
😂
Currently stranded cus the car kept going into limp mode and would come back after deleting the code as soon as I gave it any gas. It finally stumbled and refused to turn on. I also recently installed a stage 2 fuel pump and had to retro fit the bobber since the bracket holes for the screws didn't line up properly. So this is definitely my issue 👌🏼🤞 thank you for this one
If that ever happens again... Disconnect the neg terminal on battery and plug it back in to clear shadow codes and get the car running again. That saved me from calling a tow truck. Also, you many want to flash to 91 oct and then add more 91 oct asap till youn have it looked at. I have done this many any times, believe me. Too much E85 will throw Fuel Pump error / Low Pressure error and stall aka Limp Mode and will not start after that FYI.
The fuel level float must have got stuck on the lpfp lol. There’s also a fuel level sensor float on the fuel sending unit on the other side of the seat. If the gas tank still isn’t reading correctly check that. Ask me how I know lol.
How do you know? hahahah
This is the same HPFP that FCPeuro sells.... and I notice something..... The white sticker with bar code shows that the fuel pump is actually the old ass model 13517616194 and NOT the latest upgraded 13517616446 model that the box indicates is.... I know cause i have the same pump from FCP that I just ordered and realized I don't need after since all my car need was replacing the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor to the latest and better upgraded model with the included newer version fuel line it attaches to.... My car was giving the P10D9, P15DF, P0087 & from MHD Flasher error codes 11A401, 11B401, 11B501, 119404 (Rail Pressure sensor, signal: permanently stuck), 11A002, 11AC02 and all of these indicated High pressure fuel too low.... The first P errors lead me straight to the Low pressure fuel sensor and I replaced it with newest latest revision model with the upgraded short fuel line.
I finally was able to find an android app that monitors the Low fuel pressure PSI with BimmerLink. Once the new Low Pressure Fuel Sensor w/fuel line installed in my F10 535i M Sport the bad gas smells where gone! But the rough cold starts a 3 to 4 second starting cranks where still there and when warming up the car still felt rough until it warmed up.... At cold starts the High Pressure Fuel pump would have way too low PSI readings at about 100 psi or less and would throw a Drivetrain Malfunction when accelerating normal not fully warmed. I would turn of the car, open the door quick and restart the car and the PSI readings for the hpfp would become normal again at about 715 psi at idle. This continued for a few days and thought to myself that the HPFP was bad and needed to be replaced as well... $700 for the pump with $75 for core change included....
Well told myself, how could both the HPFP and the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor could've gone bad at the exact time when both are electronically connected differently and separately!
I started thinking and then it hit me.... "maybe the sensor needs to be reset as the ECU probably still thinks the old sensor is still connected".... But there is not app to reset that sensor and then it hit me..... For all sensor to start reading correctly when replaced you must ignitiate a startup power sequence.... So what I did was without starting my car the next day, I turned on the ignition but NOT the engine, and waited till the light turned on then turned off and the only light module that stays on is the Engine Light. So then I turned OFF the ignition and waited 10 seconds. I repeated this process 3 times.... after finishing the reset I left the car off for about 10 minutes.... I connected BimmerLink and started the car... To my surprised the car started right up on the first crank... the PSI on the Low Pressure Fuel sensor was ready a healthy strong 87 psi and would stay there when idle and driven.... The High Pressure Fuel Pump was at a stable strong 700 -715 psi at idle and would easily go up when being pushed on the gas peddle.... I would keep monitoring all the sensor and psi after clearing all the error codes, and kept testing the car for the next days... took it up on the freeway and did a few pulls and NO Check Engine Lights, No Misfiring, No Drivetrain Malfunction.... NO Problems.... seems the HPFP is indeed still good and the culprit was the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor!
💪🏽
The German tuners take out the small filter in the pump so that there is more petrol and less resistance, for stage 3 it is advisable to do this. Good luck 👍 HDP is an illness, lasts 50,000 kilometers approx
who does that?
Do they replace the filter by adding a larger inline one with larger flow ?
HDP? Hohe Drueck Pumpe? German for HPFP?
N54 Power, have you got any more info on that? I remember reading about Vargas doing it on his VTTO seeing some more info on it and at what point its needed etc.
I had not heard about that before but I think I would want to keep any filters that are in the system..
if the system cannot deliver whats needed because of a filter then I would just upgrade it
Ouch - out of fuel. How frustrating! Keep up the good videos ... and buy a M6 V10 so I can learn from you ;-)
Does the v10 M5 count? Gonna start playing with that one soon. Had it for 11 years now, it's been nearly faultless, so it's about time for some serious S85 preventative maintenance. Then we need to get it making some more power. It seems wrong my 335i pulls away from it now.
@@ZeroTo60Tube M5 works too! You're right - an inline 6 shouldn't pull away from a V10.
U will not beat the sound tho Mr astley haha i can still hear it in the clem 7 🤤🤤😍
@@nickcarman699 Heres a flash back for you..... 10 years ago....... ruclips.net/video/L6alFmUnucc/видео.html
Soooo ready for the next one 😆😆🤘
Geez the fuel economy has been so good running ethanol and boost......the gauge hasn’t even moved................Bugger! at least you have a spare hpfp now.
That is 100% what I thought. Since filling up the car had 2 5-7 day periods where it was parked up. I remember thinking “hmmmm I thought it had less fuel in than this” last Thursday...... turns out it did have less fuel 😂
Oh and just a reminder, there's a BMW Fuel Pump recall detailing the failure of the pump, melting harness and the fuel meter needle failing causing false fuel levels making the driver think there is still fuel in the tank when it runs out of fuel and stalling suddenly! This effects N54 engines and early regular N55 engines (not N55 engine M Sport models as these have the higher quality pumps as the M5 series models)...
Really cool that you made it into a quiz. I have no idea, but it's really late. Who am I kidding, even tomorrow morning I will probably not know. But it's cool that you 're making us think about it. Off to the comment section
Well, had to find a positive out of a very silly mistake on behalf haha. At least it's not another broken part.
I experienced the same issue if your lpfp is not right your hpfp system wont be right either to rule that out I would stick another genuine walbro in to replace that cheap primary pump ya have in it lol, I did notice in your previous videos of you lpfp data logging your pressure seems to stay at about 60psi ish witch I would expect to see about a solid 70 psi on average in the end I suspect you old hpfp might be still be fine I would be surprised if your old pump is still upto the task as it's a revised version
I might not have mentioned it. But I ended up making the walbro the main pump, for reliability’s sake.
It appears the JB4 gauge reads lower than MHD. I had the JB4 disabled while I was playing with the dtml flex input last year and noticed MHD logging listed a higher lpfp number than the JB4. Have you ever come across that?
No I haven't as I use MHD flash only and I have got my 17Ts fitted and your in for a surprise with these turbos I haven't yet tuned it and keeping an eye on the tune it pulls like a rocket past 4000rpm thy are just fantastic and the lag is minimal if I'm honest
One of those things mate, go have a beer and a chill, then come back and make fast car, fast again
Oh and remember the Jerry can
haha, that's it could have been worse thats for sure!
its just one of those things.. When I was working at Honda there was a tech who spent 4 hours trying to find a coolant leak, he forgot to check the rad cap.. just one of those stupid things that happens..
I need to sit down and watch the rest of these vids
Makes me feel a little better, definitely. Im glad i made it back with paying for a tow.
A tow is the walk of shame for us techs :) these things happen..
sounds like an intresting build and I really need to watch the build vids..I was talking to my friend yesterday about this and we got talking about an s14 thats turbo ready that i have.. cheapest body for it is an e36 im thinking
is the tank empty, was my guess when you were on the side of the road. out of fuel
his gauge shows he has just below half a tank. but tank it empty duno what to think.
Always the same with N54, if you go beyond FBO things start to be expensive and difficult. :D
Bjr, I have a problem with the water pump, when you turn off the engine and take a plug at the appraiser, the water comes out normally, but when the engine is running it's air that is sucked in. I wanted to better understand how it works. Thanks..
These hpfp would never fail if the engine naturally aspirated at 1200cc max
Did it not smell like gas in the cabin???
As Carl Childers of Sling Blade AKA Bill Bob Thornton said "It ain't got no gas in it!"
haha, he was god damn right!
Which muppet is it that you felt like exactly? Ms.Piggy, Kermit, Cookie Monster or perhaps Grover?
I personally identify with Cookie Monster…
No fuel, yet the the gauge is saying half a tank!
That's what got me while i was on the side of the road. I couldn't understand why i was having problems... You know cos my home made stage 3 in tank pump definitely wouldn't play up hahaha lol
@@ZeroTo60Tube at least you thought you were getting amazing economy !! :)
I've found myself on the side of the road with no fuel yet 30 klm showing on the dash - dooh!!
Zero To 60 This happen to me as well and I also changed my hpfp , the gas won’t go lower then quarter tank and I ran out of gas also thinking I had gas
Btw changing my hpfp didn’t help
@@rafaelvelasco7544 yeah same with mine, even when it was standard- low fuel on a slight hill and it might stop, anything below quater tank is a risk of running out. The bmw is not like my honda, which is very accurate on distance to empty.
batter upgrades low pressure switch
Yes, probably should really. They are cheap enough. But, wasn't the problem this time.
Merci.
very helpful! Thank you!
would love to know what app are you using?
this was the Jb4 app. You do need a JB4 to use it.
Ran out of gas
I am halfway through the video, but did you reset your fuel pump related adaptations?
Man this was so long ago, i honestly cant remember. I know that have been reset many times since. To let you jump through the whole story. A custom tune from JSR is what sorted this car out. It was never happy on the BMS ots maps.
I have an '11 e93 with a p0088. Do I need to do an adaption
I just replaced mine, and it worked, less gunkee stuff coming out the exhaust but it still stutters only because I still have index 4,7,9, and 12 injectors. None of them are even but I heard if you have 11 and 12. That’s the only one you can have, and the the rest o my on their own. Is that true?
To be honest i am on the fence with the "need" to have index 12. I have seen this be an issue as well. But they are all prone to issues. If money is tight, try and identify which ones are leaking and just replace those.
Just a note, different case if you are running big power. Big power where you are maxing the DI, go index 12s.
@@ZeroTo60Tube I found the best mechanic around my area but I can’t afford to pay him. Last time I went with him he gave me 2 index 12 injectors for free. He let me know which where taking a dump on me, and from there I replaced them as well the seals and couplers. After that he decoded them. The car still ran like crap but way better then before, I replaced the HPFP with an Oasis one. The car runs a lot better, I’m going to take the car to him when I get a chance. I just want to have money saved up this time because I’m always fixing the biggest issue at the moment and those index 4 injectors are holding up pretty well. So far I’ve done everything from Performance Dynamics and your channel, the car has ran a lot better since. I know next time I should try to replace all Injectors and finally do that walnut blast because I used red line and it worked but I still believe I need to drive it a bit more and give it one more oil change before I can say it’s good to go.
@@ZeroTo60Tube no huge power I still have stock cats. I actually want to see how much more power you can make with just silicone inlets, chargepipe, intercooler, and resonator delete. From your experience with N54s, what do you think that’ll push.
My guess is always 375 torque and 335 HP. My goal was to specifically make 420 hp or TQ lol 😶🌫️give or take.
Sorry have to admit I had no idea, until others posted about the fuel. Hope it doesn't cost you much to resolve. I suppose it's a learning process and you have to expect some hiccups like this. Love watching the progress though 👊
Thanks dude. Always nice seeing your name in the comments too. I know you have been here for a while.
what app and all are you running to check the car
U had no fuel 😂
4:47 Did you try the QC code on it to see if that brought anything up?
I didnt to be honest. She has been fine since going in tho.
hello great video! Do you have a model to advise me at a lower cost? I have mine to replace but I don't want to put anything in. Thank you in advance.
Unfortunately I have only used this genuine one. But the cheaper China options may work
If you don't want to put anything in you got the wrong engine, bud.
what pump did you fit? i just done one with a cheap pump and it appears to be broke from the moment i installed it
I used genuine. It was a painful purchase.
@@ZeroTo60Tube made the genuine purchase today, £929 ouch
Love the sad music 😂
I was really trying to capture the emotional roller coaster i was riding at the time.....
Wonder if we can able to use new m3 hpfp on n54
Probably, they bolt to the engine very different. Actually they are driven of a cam type lobe, not a shaft like the N54. That said even with better fuel pressure the N54 high pressure injectors are a limit. Port injection is the only way to make serious power.
my hpfp must be toast it sits at 5 lmao
Would a failing hpfp cause blue smoke to come out the exhaust and smoke to come out from the oil fill cap on the valve cover?
Generally not, but anything is possible. To rule that out, simply montior your rail pressure. Make sure it is behaiving as it should. If the HPFP is failing your rail pressure will be all over the place.
@@ZeroTo60Tube thank you soo much I appreciate your quick reply I'm actually doing a compression check now
May want to check your injectors!!
@@TheMAC0876 sadly I have low compression ok cylinders 3 and 5
@@motown862000 you may have an ovaled head, ppipfr has recently come out with a bore kit to correct ovaled heads. That can cause you to lose compression.
Looks like fuel pump module ekp issue. Did you sort out?
It was a fuel issue. There wasn't any in the car...... :|
Least you have a spare hpfp.. 👍
That's it, i have had the 29DC error a couple of times earlier in the year....so at least if it comes back again, we know its not the HPFP causing it. I feel like i am about to go down a long path of buying many N54 cars, so it will be handy to have one in stock for maybe a less modded car anyway.
No fuel faulty fuel sender it could of been worse :-)
It was worse.... it was my install skills haha

Hello, what's the problem finally?
It was the tune! The bms ots map wouldn’t stabilise fuel pressure properly. Custom tune from a decent tuner and never saw the problem again
@@ZeroTo60Tube i get 29dc code on mine but i don't have any problem with misfire and my cold start it's pretty good with no trouble. I just get this code 2 times before 2 days which was very hot outside 40 degrees. I have lpfp stage 3 pro tuners. Are you thinking something? Had issue with voltage as well on ekp module because of stage 3 lpfp. If i had problem with my hpfp it shouldn't have had problems with my cold start as well??
Thank you for your reply!
No gas huh?
😑
Looks like the rats nest caught the fuel sending unit arm and your actually out of fuel. Your pick up is clearly seen not submerged.
You are on the money! The bottom of the tank was dry to touch! I don't know how i made it back.
you found a bit of something that looks like a o-ring.. and... you... did not think that might be an issue?
Well obviously it wasn't a good thing....... but god knows how it got in there.
Can someone be so kind to tell me what software app this is? I use "Car Scanner" app for Android and its amazing as it fully scans all trouble codes and it includes shadow error codes, all the P codes, Permanent codes, etc... It also has an amazing Live Data and also monitors all the main sensors in you BMW and this is just the Free version. The only monitor missing is the Low Pressure Fuel Pump PSI monitor or it would be the perfect app! If you pay the $4 for the app it will unlock the Pro version and it becomes heaven for any BMW as this will open a HUGE amount of new sensor monitoring such monitoring for the Turbos, Wastegate, more Fuel PSI, Fuel pressure temps, all Oxygen sensors in ur car, Torque friction, Fuel rate for every Cylinder and a massive of monitoring sensors more..... worth the $4..... and works with any ELM327 Bluetooth adapter.
This is the JB4 app. You need a JB4 for it to connect to the car.
