I spoke with a young man last year (19-20 yrs old) and asked about the civil war, the political parties and he told me that the democrats were in the north and abolished slavery... I graduated high school in 1971. In.addition to satisfying state education requirements, if you wanted to go to college you had to have 4 years of English, 2 of American history, 2 of geography, 2 of math, 2 of a foreign language, 2 of science, 4 of phys Ed, plus minor classes, art, shop, etc. Extra curricular activities mattered. Being active in various school sponsored cubs mattered. If you didn't meet the requirements, community college was available. No ,"remedial" programs available, there were too many students that proved themselves in high school.

BrassBashers My school didn’t teach any of the stuff you mentioned (2016 grad). I honestly had to learn it from my parents, and they were so puzzled why I didn’t learn it in school. I wish HS nowadays would teach it but it seems like the teacher at the end was similar to how I schooling is now. I remember even my senior year of school (I wasn’t too involved in politics at this point). My teacher made us take the political compass test and she wasn’t too happy when I was found to be on the right and they really never mentioned in school what side was what in the civil war. Never really went over the constitution with us, etc. Im sure it has gotten worse luckily I got out of school before the political divide got bad. But Im not surprised about that teacher at all, which is insane because pushing your own political agenda on fucking 5TH GRADERS, is insane.

We were taught this every year fifth through eighth grade civil war, revolutionary war every year was talked about. Apparently the teachers skipped this one in their schools .

The issue with homeschooling though is that it creates huge bias and lack of social interaction. The kid needs to experience what growing up in the real world is like, talk and discuss with other people, be able to work with them. Kids would choose to be out with other kids than their parents.

If it's removed, no matter how racist it is, it can be hard for society to move forward as you're not confronting the past for all its mistakes, which should serve as a reminder not to go back in history. I understand your intention here, but the common public school curriculum is full of holes, manipulated texts and perspectives that serve the "state's narrative". The only way to break this cycle is to have school choice, difference in quality and perspective in teaching and then it's up to you as a parent to decide which school you would like to send your kids too. I'm not saying, I would want this lady to teach my children, but I take responsibility as a parent and teach my kids about my values and don't hope for the government to decide on that. On another note: That teacher is only able to go off the books and teach the kids whatever she wants because she's protected by a union. In the small public school I went to for a grade, most of the teachers there deserve a pay raise. They were kind and taught a lot more than the main public schools. The public schools need a substantial financial boost, and I'm aware that this money won't fall from the sky, but otherwise you could as well burn the money. If you want the schools to perform, they need to be able to afford better teacher, and more of them. So that you get manageable/teachable classes. And the teachers unions need to grow a spine and start supporting the schools in getting to get rid of bad, lazy and incompetent teachers. Getting them out of the system and creating space for someone better; and not keep them in the system at all cost. And besides all that, teacher needs to become a respectable job (as it once was) and (within reason) supported by the parents. If I'm any good at what I do, why would I currently choose an employment as a teacher? Payment sucks, way too big classes where I don't have the time to address any child as much as it would need it. I’ve been to public school, I’ve been to private school, and I’ve been homeschooled. Homeschooling is the best! I actually learned when I was homeschooled. At the other schools, especially public school, I was constantly being punished. Everything they taught there was either bull or stuff I already knew.

There are a few things kids need to be taught
1) The Bible. America used to be a much better place and it wasn't that long ago when 60-80% of a given town would be at sunday service, I've never met a bad christian in my life and everyone has been very good in my christian community, both chinese and non-chinese. 2) Kids NEEEEED to be taught about the constitution more than anything.

I spoke with a young man last year (19-20 yrs old) and asked about the civil war, the political parties and he told me that the democrats were in the north and abolished slavery... I proceeded to google the civil war for him, he was shocked it was the other way around.
I graduated from high school in 2017 I went to school when these kids were going to school and I remember learning everything from American history. I don’t understand how these kids don’t know the basics I’ll be surprised if they know basic math.

I graduated high school in 1971. In.addition to satisfying state education requirements, if you wanted to go to college you had to have 4 years of English, 2 of American history, 2 of geography, 2 of math, 2 of a foreign language, 2 of science, 4 of phys Ed, plus minor classes, art, shop, etc. Extra curricular activities mattered. Being active in various school sponsored cubs mattered.
If you didn't meet the requirements, community college was available. No ,"remedial" programs available, there were too many students that proved themselves in high school.

I wish HS nowadays would teach it but it seems like the teacher at the end was similar to how I schooling is now. I remember even my senior year of school (I wasn’t too involved in politics at this point). My teacher made us take the political compass test and she wasn’t too happy when I was found to be on the right and they really never mentioned in school what side was what in the civil war. Never really went over the constitution with us, etc. Im sure it has gotten worse luckily I got out of school before the political divide got bad. But Im not surprised about that teacher at all, which is insane because pushing your own political agenda on fucking 5TH GRADERS, is insane.

The issue with homeschooling though is that it creates huge bias and lack of social interaction. The kid needs to experience what growing up in the real world is like, talk and discuss with other people, be able to work with them. Kids would choose to be out with other kids than their parents.

That last “teacher” should be fired. None of what she said should be something you teach your students. The “how to not be racist” should be something their parents teach them. I am 49 and I would always question my teachers and I also learned most of what I know educating myself, it is alarming that as a Brit I know more about American history and the Constitution than they do. @Joe But these things should at least be mandated by a public vote, whether to keep them up or put them in museums rather than forcibly taking them down. If it's removed, no matter how racist it is, it can be hard for society to move forward as you're not confronting the past for all its mistakes, which should serve as a reminder not to go back in history.

I'm so thankful we homeschool our kids. My 4th grader could tell you so much about the American Revolution. He's taught to love our country, that America isn't perfect and has her stains, but our country has an awesome and unique story.
If we want to change (or restore) the culture we need to quit sending our children to be educated by leftist in public schools. Worldview matters, and an anti-American worldview is being taught in our public K-12 systems.

I understand your intention here, but the common public school curriculum is full of holes, manipulated texts and perspectives that serve the "state's narrative". The only way to break this cycle is to have school choice, difference in quality and perspective in teaching and then it's up to you as a parent to decide which school you would like to send your kids too.
I'm not saying, I would want this lady to teach my children, but I take responsibility as a parent and teach my kids about my values and don't hope for the government to decide on that.
On another note: That teacher is only able to go off the books and teach the kids whatever she wants because she's protected by a union. Remove the protection from the unions and she would have to face backlash from the parents or worst case losing her job...

In the small public school I went to for a grade, most of the teachers there deserve a pay raise. They were kind and taught a lot more than the main public schools.
The teachers in the main public schools are either incompetent idiots or total assholes. I don't understand how they let "people" who hate children teach and complain about their pay work in the school system.

The public schools need a substantial financial boost, and I'm aware that this money won't fall from the sky, but otherwise you could as well burn the money. If you want the schools to perform, they need to be able to afford better teacher, and more of them. So that you get manageable/teachable classes. And the teachers unions need to grow a spine and start supporting the schools in getting to get rid of bad, lazy and incompetent teachers. Getting them out of the system and creating space for someone better; and not keep them in the system at all cost.
And besides all that, teacher needs to become a respectable job (as it once was) and (within reason) supported by the parents.
If I'm any good at what I do, why would I currently choose an employment as a teacher? Payment sucks, way too big classes where I don't have the time to address any child as much as it would need it. Parents dumping their crotch goblins onto me so that I raise them and teach them values and manners. And on top of that, If I dare to grade that little applicant for a Darwin award, a character that did the tide-pod challange twice, with anything less than an A then I'm the butt for not acknoledging their little Einstein and ruining his future.

I’ve been to public school, I’ve been to private school, and I’ve been homeschooled. Homeschooling is the best! I actually learned when I was homeschooled. At the other schools, especially public school, I was constantly being punished. Everything they taught there was either bull or stuff I already knew.
I was homeschooled (online school) for 1 year, I left when my math teacher gave me work then yelled at me and told me that it isnt his job to lay down a piece of paper and teach me how to do it its the parents job...
