- As the first-ever production fully electric vehicle from #Subaru, the all-new #SubaruSolterra needed to be a home run for the company if it hopes to carry its adventure lifestyle into the electric space. While Subaru did get all the help from #Toyota with the production of the #Solterra, there are some unique touches that make this #SolterraTouring a uniquely Subaru experience and the company has also given this car some improvements that make it a better EV this year.

I love the Solterra. I have had mine for just under a month and put on 2,500 kms thus far. I have tested it in city, on medium and long trips and it handles beautifully. It has taken on incredibly severe weather and floods without issue. I was quite skeptical about the lack of a rear wiper, but honestly it clears without issue. I will have to see about this in winter, since we get large amounts of snow and ice.
I have been charging on lvl 2 and cycling between 50-70% in the city and tested the DC fast charging on both 50 KwH and 100 KwH fast chargers on my long trips. I have not encountered any issues thus far and the charging time on the long trips has been between 30-40 minutes to achieve 80-90% charge. This has worked well with the need to have family stops for food and bathroom breaks.
Just picked up mine. I bought it for a commuter car. So far so good!!
I don’t hate it, I actually like the styling better than the Toyota BZ. I would definitely go with black or dark gray to mute the black cladding. For me it’s the performance. I test drove one before going with a Nissan Ariya AWD. One thing I learned about buying an EV is to buy one with about 5k miles on it. The MSRP on our Ariya was a little over $62k and I picked it up for $45k with 6200 miles on it.
I look at the EV used vehicle situation as a buying the dip type opportunity for people who want to get into an EV without as much capital on the line.
My Solterra was $35,000 new! 2024
Ambassador here, and I actually just leased one of these (Limited in Harbor Mist). Right now, these low lease payments are because they're able to roll incentives that DONT qualify on purchases into the leases; In that there's a lot of lease incenties on these to get to that 329/329 figure that the 0/72 buy option doesn't qualify for. I did lower my payment a little compared to my OB XT Touring, with a slight insurance increase... but at 1/5 what I'd pay for fuel in a month if I charge at home, it really works out. 200 in range for highway seems about right for what I got, especially once you get over the fun of flooring it for the rush. Generally I'm around 4-600 miles per month, and have an Ascent in the house for longer drives as needed.
If you can lease one for 3 years with those incentives, residual on a Limited is around 25k on the 10k/year lease, you essentially got those tax breaks if you choose to buy at the end of the term, so not a bad way to play it if you end up loving it. The front end on this is definitely better than the BZ4x imo, the faux grill helps it a solid bit. The cladding frankly looks better than the gloss black available fo the BZ too, like the piano black interior bits, the piano black is going to be covered in micro scratches, unless you stay on top of buffing and waxing.
Sofyan, If there was ever a car crying out for a few solar panels it's a ....Solterra. ☀🌝🌞🐝🐝🐝
The car itself is perfectly fine, but the price kills it. Better off with the competition in this price bracket.
Lease it for 3 years then buy it if you like it. The incentives on the lease, that finance doesn't get really helps it a lot.
If looks better then it’s twin but needs a refresh big time. Especially with all the better competition coming out lately.
I hate the pattern with these automakers throwing on those cheap looking plastic fenders, bumpers etc. I was interested in the corolla cross but it having those cheap plastic fenders killed it for me. Can imagine what it'll look like after 5-10 years in the sun.
With a whole lot of maintenance it can look quite good. The quality of preservation products is well beyond a spritz of Armour All these days. On the other hand plastic is high maintenance vis a vis paint and it looks really cheap.
Leased the 2024 Limited for $379 a month. Test drove Premium and it is not premium, manual seats and manual rear hatch, similar to my 2018 Forrester base model. So decided if I’m doing this going with Limited which has a bigger screen, power everything including hatch. A lot of hate from the people who driver a ton of miles but I’m not doing more than 200 miles a week let alone in 1 day. Have my Ascent for longer trips
Like any car, it's all about the price. Limited range and fairly slow charging would be less of an issue if the car was 35K all in. But otherwise....
Just when I thought the Mazda CX-30 went overboard with the plastic cladding, Subaru said, "hold my beer".
nah im thinking hold my sake
$54K you must be joking Subaru; $40K and I’ll consider looking at it.
No way. 40k?! I cant find a car worthy of even putting down 5-10k cashdown. These automakers are bat 💩 crazy for these plastic matchboxes
@@RZ-sh6yiYour have 💩taste anyways so you won't be putting anything down.
This woulda been competitive when the nissan leaf was the most popular ev….
Nice job Sofyan & I hope I can buy this soon.
2 words. Compliance vehicle.
3 words: wtf?
We recently traded our 2020 Forester for an Ascent buut we almost got a Solterra. It’s an awesome deal right now for leases (I wouldn’t buy an EV)
Doesn't Sun wash out the instrument panel the way it sits plainly? 🤔
That cladding is what happened when a Subaru engineer looked at a Pontiac Aztek and thought "That looks cool."
There is "designer trend" right now that is going for the plastic fender look. The new Hyundai Kona (in some trims) is a primary offender as well. Let's hope they didn't use Aztek for inspiration.
@@cbotten106 Ewww.
Gotta say it was the Toyota engineer (it has it as well with a different shade of black than black paint if you choose that) after being told to make the EV "not so good". /s
Just wondering, do focus groups respond well to the gimmicky shifters being put in most EVs?
If I had to guess, early adopters were where the market research of anything being put out lately came from, since they’re early adopters they probably said they liked how “different” they were and all the car companies acted accordingly. In a few years you’ll see peoples preferences now being put into execution
Still better than swiping on a Tesla screen. I'd prefer push buttons to the push/twist knob, but once used to it it's not bad in the Solterra/BZ
Is it confirmed the 24 AWD comes with a Panasonic battery instead of the CATL? The BZ 24's AWD also have a 150kwh charging limit up from 100 and a 7.6kwh on oboard charger. I'd think the Subie would be the same.
Best part of the interior is the screen size
The Subaru Solterra: When you want to cosplay as an overlanding EV? This totally answers a question that no one asked.
Love Subaru…own a WRX. However this one is a TURD. They can’t give em away.
I'm a bit stunned but in the area where I work (plenty of disposable income and Tesla's) I see these and the WRX a good bit...people are actually buying them (guess faith in the brand thinking they wouldn't do a bad job). But I'm with you.
I feel like it's 20k overpriced.
Exactly around 30-34k seems right to me
Comes with bees and spiders
haha
I like the interior screen better than the one the new Subarus have.
Drop the cladding, start over on the dash, add a glove box, faster charging, add rear wiper, drop the excess badges, new steering wheel, at least 300 mile combined range, might as well change the name when you do!
You should have been in the product planning meeting for this turkey. Your recipe sounds like a winner.
The top speed is 105 mph not 110 and don’t expect anywhere near 222 miles of range if you’re running the climate control whatsoever. This was my first E.V. and in 2024 in Kansas we had -10°F temperatures but anything below 45° and expect to get around 180 miles of range if that if you’re having to run defrosters etc., lower that down to 150 or less if you need all wheel drive 120ish… and by the way, mine doesn’t even have 5000 miles so there’s no battery degradation and again it’s a 2024 touring however I do love the vehicle. It’s fantastic. That’s plenty of power. It’s very capable I live in the city, but I have family in Manhattan Kansas and K state so I drive this vehicle about 160 miles one way to school and back 3 to 5 days a week and it has saved me thousands of dollars on fuel in one summer.
54k for 215hp ? You gotta be dumb to go with that when u can get a similarly priced toyota rav4 prime with 302 hp and although its not fully electric its still super fuel efficient
Good luck getting a RAV4 prime without waiting at least a year or two
the electric motor on the RAV4 prime is around 150hp and the rear motor on it is only for assistant
So most all new cars go for $30k-50k hard to think thats normal I feel sorry for college grads/young gen.
so much piano gloss
Honestly, I would rather Subaru [and the Toyota version] offer this as a Hybrid system, rather than a full EV. I like the way it looks and really like the interior. Similar to the Prius, but I like a bit taller of a vehicle. But I won't do a full EV. I don't have the place to charge it. And a Hybrid system would probably cost less than a full EV.
Reminds me of when Mr Krabs opens that tiny treasure chest and a crowd yells "Plastiiiiiiiiiiiic" in the background
Thanks for the out takes👍 😂
Love the outtakes, bees also bother me lol
Thumbnail of the Solterra and the Toyota Crown , shows you they are cousins.
I think the both the Toyota engine Subaru will look better with a body color option for the cladding.
I guess that bee was a huge fan of the Solterra lol
jesus christ 222 mile range should be an embarrassment
It is and real world will be even worse than that. Imagine somebody in a cold climate. 😰 Chilling. Maybe 150 miles. Maybe.
I would rather have a Forester or an Outback instead of this.
Drive it to work-charged for free! No longer having to go to a gas station. Weird!! Will save $200 a month in gas. Driving this car for free!!
I think that their names should be flipped the other way around. Toyota Soltera and the Subaru Bz4x
I guess the best thing you can say about the Solterra is, "It could have been worse." Not exactly a lofty standard.
They’ve sold tens of them.
It still looks terrible inside and out. Why did they spring for such an awful interior design. It needs a Camry or Crown interior instead. DOA, and looks like they don't care as competitors keep springing up.
Oh hush
You don't know what you're talking about this looks good.....
@truckercowboyed2638 Literally, no one buys this or has many positive things to say. Compliance car that is behind competitors. No need to defend trash just because you own a Subaru.
Well your opinion doesn't make it true ......and yeah I drive a Subaru because they are good and reliable...and inexpensive compared to the competition....@@ishaansaral502
Agreed 💯. Another DOA from Toyota as usual
So your favorite Toyota hater is once again getting pleasure from everyone’s displeasure on this car😁
Not a great car, had one as a rental and the battery is way too small. At most (real)180 mile range, and since most people will start to freak out when you get down to 20 miles left, that means 160 mile range and then find a charger. And with the slow changing, you can’t ever do a road trip with a $54000 car. And never mind that it is trying way too hard to pretend it’s a rugged suv with a bunch of plastic fenders.
That somewhat solid sounding thunk of the door tells me it is made very cheaply.
Still one of the Best car reviewers out there. Front of the vehicle looks like a ford Escape/Telsa. Body cladding will fade out with time and look trashy. Overall not a bad functional car.
11:14 Can you please put a blooper reel out
40 min pause on your road trip to get you 170ish mi of range
Can you do a review of the 2024 Ascent Touring
I don’t like the excessive EV badges.
Why would anyone buy this when you can get the model Y is beyond me.
This thing is absolute trash when compared to a model Y…you’d have to an absolute moron to buy this instead of a Tesla. Especially at 53k… Subaru really shit the bed on this one
I got one as a loaner....Drove ok. Cluttered inside tho.
For the price, what you get is NOT good (quite frankly its awful). $54k for a 215 hp, 222 mile range, slow, absurdly slow "fast charging", ugly AF vehicle that can't tow is a horrible purchase. Toyota/Subaru need to step up their EV game. If this came in under $35k, it'd be acceptable. But not for $20k more.
You can’t get an EV for under $50,000
@@ronsmith7594um… Tesla. You can.
Used Tesla from Hertz. You can.
@AtlantiansGaming sounds like a gamble buying a tesla from hertz you know the people abused the hell out of those tesla
I agree that the black trim pieces look very ugly. It’s like they intentionally kneecapped the car’s look.
Bugs - It is their planet. 🐝🐞🦗🐜🕷
I thought he might have had a black widow in there with him.
This is the current day pontiac aztec or PT cruiser.
Let's see if people are still talking about this in 20-30 years. Those two are legendary!
I do enjoy the look of the steering wheel. Has great hand placement
"Fucking bee! Go Away!"
recently these bees have been in love with sofyan lol
sure gets lousy reviews on KBB. I have ridden in one as an UBER and that was very nice.
😂 had an Isiah Carey moment there.
This looks identical to the Toyota. It make sense because Toyota owns Suburu. I never knew Toyota owns so many brands besides Lexus.
Toyota doesn't quite own Subaru, they're just very close partners. Subaru is owned by Subaru Corporation, and Toyota has a 20% stake in Subaru Corporation
More plastic 😩 These cars are going to start melting above 90degrees in the sun!!
I always thought the rav4 was the ugliest vehicle on the road but now this thing takes first place along with those Toyota crown vehicles.
I am beyond ready for brands to get past gloss black. No everyday consumer wants that crap.
When it is clean and scratch free it looks like an luxurious pricey piano black trim...and that illusion lasts about two minutes.
These insects 🕷️ 🐝 just won’t let Sofyan be great. At least they like the Solterra. I see potential here but the styling is a bit too polarizing for me. Maybe if I see more on the road I’d be into it.
These thing are fast but I'm not ready to move to ev.
The reason it chines in reverse is cause all cars in Japan do that
All EV’s worthwhile are $50,000 on up.
No disrespect with only 214hp for 59000$ with taxes and fees ,you can expect Subaru to go straight to the bankruptcy court .DOA real life range 180 miles.Lots of plastic for 59k .Yeah good luck with that.Stop polluting the planet with these rubbish vehicles.
Toyota must be horrified people are buying these things. They sold almost 10,000 of them last year and might sell twice that many in 2024! They tried like hell to make this thing ugly and uncompetitive in every way and even told people the wheels would fall off and they STILL bought them. I'll bet every single sale took one sale from their high profit tailpipe cars and is proving their "consumers don't want EVs" talking point wrong. How embarrassing.
The color of the vehicles is drawing the bugs to you and your shirt.
Ugly, slow charging, slow moving, cheap looking interior and exterior… unless you are a diehard Subaru fan, I can’t think of a single compelling reason to choose this over basically anything else in the segment besides maybe the Fisker Ocean for obvious reasons.
Hmm. Knowing this is the same as the bz4x, I wonder what your favorite Toyota hater you all know and love is going to say…?😉😂
It’s simply DOA just like any other Toyota product
This is vintage Naveen folks. The world's largest auto company got that way making vehicles that are DOA. Naveen, Naveen, the comedy macheen!
@@gerry9306 keep laughing
Their products may sell but selling more doesn’t make a car more fun to drive or faster or more luxurious or better looking or roomier than rivals
@@naveenthemachine Their cars are luxurious, fun, and most of all reliable. Simply the best 👍
@@naveenthemachineand fyi just because something is cheaper doesn’t mean it’s better
@@gerry9306 wrong on all of them
Toyotas are the worst driving in the segment. And they’re not remotely close to luxurious.
Ladies and gentlemen, i present to you the real reason Toyota is so invested in old hybrid technology. It’s because they cannot compete in the fully electric space. This is just terrible.
BTW, contrary to Sofyan, I think the outside styling looks cool. Again a nice car that just happens to be a very bad EV.
The bloopers get me 😂😂😂 but another note this car or suv sucks
this car is crap, there are much better electric cars
Same as you
You're a silly man Tommie
Plastic on wheels
Too much black plastic cladding 🤮
why do the bugs hate you!!
Its a very nice vehicle that happens to be a crappy EV. Unless your needs are limited to a short distance runabout, you should not buy this car. Worst EV specs in the market. Charges slow, very short range, and limited DC charging. Toyota's slogan is "Who Could Ask For Anything More?" Well......EVERYONE!😂
There is not enough lipstick in the world to fix this pig.
I don't really care for it. All that I would want would be an all electric version of the Subaru Outback
🐝🐝🐝😠😡🤬😅😂🤣
Subaru is a shell of its former self. Whole vehicle lineup is ugly
For a new car the interior looks dated 🙈🙈👎🏻
It's a compliance vehicle that Toyota/Subaru drew up years ago. It's dated in literally every way besides the date of manufacture.
Nobody buying this
The end of Subaru…bye bye
Worst design ever. Abomination.
Toyota X Subaru and toyota X bmw might be the biggest car mfg flop ever
Subaru design is ugly as always
Every Subaru is ugly.
So much plastic. Get ready if you wanna buy this car. Because this is gonna start rattling in the highway at 100 F.
Subaru is falling asleep at the wheel. This car isn't great. Listen to new buyers - your base is shrinking. You can only do safe for so long
This is garbage
whata disgrace to Subaru 😊
This car looks gay
They somehow were able to make it uglier this year lmao
Interior is awful.
