Theo (Clive Owen) escorts Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) and the baby out of the building past soldiers who lower their guns at the sight of the miracle.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Y Tu Mamá También and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón returns to the helm to tell this futuristic tale in which society is without hope since humankind lost its ability to procreate. The year is 2027, and women can no longer give birth. The youngest inhabitant of the planet has just died at the age of 18, and all hope for humanity has been lost. As civilization descends into chaos, a dying world finds one last chance for survival in the form of a woman who has become inexplicably pregnant. Now, as warring nationalistic sects clash and British leaders try to maintain their totalitarian stronghold on the country, a disillusioned bureaucrat (Clive Owen) is brought back into the fold of activism by his guerrilla ex-wife (Julianne Moore). Reluctantly, he takes on the daunting task of escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), the refugee who represents humankind's last hope for survival, out of harm's way and into the care of a mysterious organization known as The Human Project. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine co-star in this adaptation of author P.D. James's gripping 1992 novel.

You can actually see fear in the eyes of the younger people unsure of what they are looking at. In the older people its pure joy knowing that there is hope for humanity again.
Yeah... That's true...
Extras like these don’t get nearly enough credit sometimes. They can make or break a scene
@@almostunliketea You are correct in the words of Shakespeare "There are no small parts only small actors." Each person no matter how big or small a roll helps to emphasize the importance of this scene
crap you're right, I didn't notice it. The youngs look shocked in silence but the olds are full of joy. What a great detail.
Some of those people are old enough to have held thier own babies at some point in their lives. I think some of the older ones that wanted to get close were remembering that.
It takes a moment like this to realize what children mean to the world. They mean hope.
lol
Any other person can talk about love. Who really tries to provide a future means it.
They are a gift from God
No. Age-reversing technology means hope.
But you all don't respect the ones who bring children into the world
No dialog, just facial expressions, body language. And it's still moving.
I hope to not sound too pretentious but, that's what they call "Cinema" (with the capital C), the opposite of "entertainment"... the old good rule of "show don't tell".
@@paolastrange9903 This is why I do not consider most "Hollywood" movies to be real Cinema ;-)

the bleeding woman on the ground.
She heard a baby cry and she began to sing. A lullaby for a baby in a world where there were no more births. A dying knowledge.
Art born of the most beautiful necessity even as her life escaped her with every second her injury wasn't treated.
That's not just any reaction you get in any movie anymore
beautiful comment
Just look at the old soldiers and the younger soldiers.
Those old soldiers look emotional because they are seeing a baby again after 18 years...
Those younger soldiers look confused and scared because they never really seen a real baby...
European Pizza there aren't that many young soldiers either. The professional US military has a lot of late 20s-early 30s personnel, but you don't often see so many later 30s-40s men as ground troops kicking in doors. This world's population has aged quite a bit
I think it has more to do with the fact that for the past two decades, everyone present's entire world has been defined by babies not existing.
NYG5 that was the UK military
yeet
They are looking at baby as if looking at their own new born child
theres always that one guy who has to ruin a moment....
Sorry 0:48
why did that guy fall
Yeah, who is the fucker who shot the RPG out the window. Seriously.
Vladimir Dragonov ruin? He let them escape. The troops would have taken the baby after a few minutes
No they wouldn't, when seeing that baby they received hope again. something that was missing in their lives so they were just ordered to fight against civilians/refugees.
When the first soldier realizes there is a baby and yells "ceasefire", and then when the two soldiers outside neal and make the sign of the cross after seeing the baby, those two scenes always fucking tear me up.
Same and people are still reading these old comments in 2018 👍
2019 now
Me too man.
I liked this part and when the human genome project people finally find her
SpikedGaming The two older soldiers on the left at 2:45 always get me. The first one looks so weary but happy at the same time, and I love how the second one ignores the frantic talking from the radio and just stares with his mouth wide open in disbelief.
I strongly believe this movie is one of the best ever made.
And this scene is the best scene in movie I've ever seen. The power of the emotion, the tracking shot, the soundtrack, the acting from EVERYONE all the extras and main cast.
It is simply a masterpiece of cinema, and Children of Men is so, so underrated.
Greatest film ever made.
The1Floyd it is because you are naive as fuck. in real life they baby wasnt even born.
The1Floyd you know why it is so great to you? ask me in private. Colosphonium in here im the composer.
Underrated??? Jesus
I agree - this scene IS extraordinary and I don't know why but every time I see the breaking of the ceasefire it reminds me of Manga movies.
as good as Gravity was, but this should've been alfonso cuaron's oscar winning movie.
this movie is much better and more important in every way. especially in these times.
manulito2 Agree.
It is also the closest comparassion Cuaron has from Stanley Kubrick
manulito2 gravity was awful.
Gravity was visually epic but thats it- this movie is far superior.
If Sandra Bullock gave birth in space, then it would be the best movie in the world
Gravity wasn’t even that good of a movie. This one was far better
It's right when the soldier immediately said, "STOP! CEASE FIRING! CEASE FIRING!" that really hit me and I bursted into tears. Not just the civilians who are just fighting for survival, but even the soldiers who were sworn into service will stop & ignore their direct orders just to pause for one moment and see a baby. THAT is powerful.
@@ericgori6051 Have you seen the film..?
Because the context here is entirely different.
@@anitaekka6454 Yes. I enjoyed the film very much. I know it was the 1st child born in 18yrs. I just meant that from what I've seen overseas. I don't think it would have mattered. It(the firing) wouldn't have stopped, even for a few minutes
@@ericgori6051 I think that is the whole point. In a future where we cannot reproduce, humanity cannot stop killing itself. There is no evolution of consciousness. I will never understand humanities propensity for self destruction.
Eric Gori Yes but the situation is completely different. Slumping people in a desert is completely different to an extinction level event don’t you think?

The shock of the platoon leader ordering to cease fire after hearing the baby cry is enough to send you into a state of uncontrollable tears 😭
That actor did an amazing job - both with his face (the initial shock as he realised what he was looking at), and his voice (the frantic urgency in his tone as he yelled to cease fire).
Yup...
Weakling
We take seeing new babies for granted, in a world were no baby has been born in 18 years, eventually the knowledge of babies slowly fades away. I love how this scene shows something we ALL have, a natural instinct to protect a child. Seriously everytime you hear a baby cry, you instantly react in someway, but most time, your very first impulsive act is to care for the child. This scene did a great way of showing that even after 18 years of infertility, that instinct is still very much alive and strong in the human soul.
must have been 100 people in that scene that would have died for that baby.
Beautifully said!
My 1st instinct is to launch the baby from a giant catapult

I can't help myself: I'm a grown man but my heart melts every time. You truly forget what a precious gift children are. A beautiful scene in a world of cold tyranny.
It shows the true nature of the rebels that they would take that moment of mesmerized peace to strike. What a great film.
Patrick Bateman They were filled with hate, probably as a result of the many years of frustrations with the government and the way the world was going. It offers an incredibly prophetic insight into a dying world, our world. A great film indeed. :)
+Patrick Bateman those kinds of strikes are the only option when you are out-manned, out gunned, out-supplied, you get the idea.
+Matthew Penrose Indeed. You know, being a new father, I've been fascinated seeing a similar thing even today where you can walk through a super market and people that would otherwise not acknowledge your existence almost walk into things peering over into your open stroller as they pass by. It's one of those things that keeps your faith in humanity going.
Jarrett Burch That's nice to hear. I'm not a father, but I can't help but notice how beautiful they are when they're that young and small. Even has me smiling, despite not wanting any for myself.
This is a soul touching scene, this scene alone is what makes this one of my favorite films of all time. Also the long shot battle scene before this is brilliant.
Angel Valerio The book was a masterpiece. But the movie is better.
The tears. Oh my god the tears. Despite the ugliness and cruelty of life and mankind - everything stops in the face of innocence. All humans want is the beauty and innocence of life. We are all one. My god, this scene.
Freddie Mercury so true. The world we live in is full of hate, wars and violence, such a heartbreaking masterpiece film.
Everyone in this world should be watching this film.
I felt the same way the first time I saw it. We live in such a shit world right now. I gave up the thought of having a family because of it. I refuse to let anyone I would care so deeply about be in it. I wouldn't want them to suffer like I have.
Damn, really well said 😢
I literally came to the comments to see if anyone else felt the same way. This scene literally brought me to tears. Such a great scene and film.

I shed a few tears because of this scene. Particularly just before it when he told the rebel "...It's a girl." I couldn't hold it in any longer. Then the gunshots rang. The opera'esque music in the background, the baby wailing over all the music, continuing to silence, the soldier that got down on one knee...
Amazing. Simply amazing.

I watched it last night. I was choked up! Films almost never do that to me but this? Wow! I wasn't expecting that!
I recorded from SyFy and it missed the last few minutes ARGH! I am trying to find the ending.
If you thought Children of Men was phenomenal for its direction, you owe it to yourself to also watch Gravity. The fear, the tension, the unknowingness of it all is so palpable. I'd label Cuarón as the best director of my generation (IMO)
Alexandra Alexus Definitely!
This was amazingly good. I saw it a couple of years ago on Netflix and didn't watch it, I am so glad I recorded it. What a film!
I can't believe the emotion that came pouring out.
The only other films that have done that to me are 12 Years a Slave and Schindler's List.
I love the really small details in this scene, such as at 1:55, where we see the civilian gently touch the soldiers shoulder, as they both sit together to witness the scene in front of them. Their conflict ceases to matter for those few minutes.

You have to remember that alot of these people haven't seen a baby for a long time. Not because of war but becuase something happened to the human race where we can't reproduce. Imagine two decades or so of not seeing one baby or child. Really emotional scene.
Is really more than that. Hope is crushed and everyone as turned cynical, self-destructive, or continue trough the motions like a machine. This baby is like some miracle that deny that and change that.

In real life this woul be improbable. We still woul have frozen eggs an thus babies woul still be born though perhaps only to the elite.
That you for explaining what we already knew.
that's the point of the whole movie, it's not like a small concept u forget while watching??
Uncontrollable tears. This is the most beautiful and powerful scene I’ve ever watched in a movie. The way the entire world stops, the crying stops, the gunfire stops, the conflict stops, the entire world stops and watches in awe as the last baby is carried out through a war field, giving humanity hope and everyone reaches their hand for the last piece of life left. Truly a masterpiece. Nothing will beat the power of this scene.

This is one of the most terrifying things to imagine. The world is crumbling, humans can't procreate, the army is at your doorstep blowing up your walls when you happened to land there by chance. Yet, it's beautiful, because mankind witnesses a flickering hope in that baby. Remember, many of the people born in this world have never seen a child. As one would say "I felt the world die when I could no longer hear the laughter of children. They all looked, they stopped, they felt joy again for a fleeting minute.

The expression on the soldier's face at 1:29 is amazing.
My compliments to the actor!
I think this scene is probably the best in all of movie history.
Just the sheer force of emotion in these 3 minutes far surpasses anything that a full length film has been able to that I can think of.
when the solder kneels down and starts praying gets me every time
This was the first movie that has genuinely made my cry, I was watching with my dad and during this scene I began sobbing uncontrollably. I thought I was soft or just too emotional because nothing had ever made me have this reaction before. However, I looked over to my dad and he was crying too. I don't know if it was the fact that I was sharing this moment with him or that It gave me the reassurance that it was ok have this sort of reaction but it just made me cry harder. After the credits began rolling I just walked over to him on the couch and starting crying into him, I couldn't stop. He is a filmmaker and this moment specifically made me finally understand why he made movies. Why he has the drive to make work that causes this sort of reaction from people. Emotions are such an essential part of our lives and to make a piece of work that could make a person feel the way that this movie and this scene made me feel is beautiful. I just wanted to share this because it was such a memorable part of my life.

I can't not cry when watching it even the 20th time, this film is a masterclass in film making
I cried last night when I saw this scene, I totally forgot about how beautiful this movie is.
The rebel that meets Theo on the stairs at 1:25 is the guy from the resistance house earlier in the film. I always assumed he knew that the leadership was dead and figured Theo would do the right thing. I saw this film when it first came out. One of the most touching pieces of cinema I've ever witnessed. Easily in my top 100 films of all time.
I picked up on that after watching the film a third time. Besides yourself, I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it. Seemed like a good bloke, even if he had a job to do.
In the script it was Patrick lol
Theo shared a cigarette with him earlier and tried getting to know the rebel’s background. He had no hard feelings against Theo.
Children are tomorrow, a reminder of innocence, a reason to hope.
And a reminder for _us_ to be better humans, because it is our responsibility that the baby has a future worth living.
Another Alfonso Cuaron masterpiece.
It was like 15 years ago and I was just a kid, but I've never seen more people crying in a theatre than in this scene.
As a couple struggling to bear a child ourselves, rewatching this scene, is very emotional.
Have you been doing okay now?
This scene just yells the concept of *'Hope'*
Nothing more, nothing less...
This scene is recalling the escape of Joseph, Mary and the Infant Jesus from Herod.
@Starscream91 this movie is more real than joseph m mary and sweet baby jesus (wutang wu tang)

That thought never crossed the mind
If I was one of the soldiers I would be crying tears of Joy, because that should have been a sign that there is faith for humanity.
This scene always gives me chills when I watch. The juxtaposition of the innocent baby and her mother in a scene of war sets such a stark contrast.. it reminds me of that legend about the christmas truce of 1914 when French, German, and British soldiers stopped fighting, exchanged food, conversation and then went right back to fighting a few days later
The Christmas Truce is a true story.

Honestly, I cried a lot in this scene. The baby's cry was the purest and most powerful sound in the world.. Even in the middle of the battlefield.
I am not at all a fan of children or infants but this scene is very powerful and I love every bit of it.

So did I! Well not crying but choked up and tearing up! That never happens to me, men don't cry at films!
The build up to that scene was really impotant to the over all weeping effect. I recorded this from a few nights ago and it missed the last few minutes! I need to find the ending or I will weep!

Miss Boss So I guess you wasn't a fan of yourself once.
Well considering as an infant I didn't have the brain functionality to hate myself nor do I remember being an infant, no. Also everyone says that same thing, 'guess you didn't like yourself'. I didn't develop a dislike towards children as a baby, I started disliking them as a young teenager and still dont like them as an adult.
You'll never see such miracle in cinematography nowadays. Its just heart stopping and put everyone speechless on their chairs

I remember watching this scene for the first time and feeling emotional. Its almost transcendent, how biblical this scene seemed to me. The reverence radiated by the soldiers and bystanders alike with the score just completed the picture of the Son of Man descending into chaos once more to become a flicker of hope to those lost in pain and hopelessness.
Even the soldier who yelled the others to cease fire deserved the Oscar.

Soldiers had covered their position but also they were covering the baby. This scene is so powerful and moving.
Sometimes it's good to remind yourself "oh, they're all just actors, none of them died and there's no harm done" but god how everything in this movie is put together makes the scene so damn authentic and depressing. You can tell Alfonso is a great director cause he directed the extras excellently, they all look so dejected and devoid of joy, desensitised to war and death, until they see a baby.. And they light up, almost not knowing what the hell they're actually seeing, it legit looks like some of them can't even believe it. And even if the scene resumes, many people in that building died, they were all graced with the greatest sight of hope which is seeing a baby, and that was probably all they needed for just some ounce of peace.
The scene tears me tf up cause for a brief moment it felt like everyone, refugees, freedom fighters and soldiers alike, was given a few minutes just to be the most human they've ever been in that cursed place
Probably one of the most beautiful scenes in cinema
This remains the most realistic depiction of a world in disarray. No leather jackets. No cool adventures. Just confused people and indiscriminate violence halted only by a baby crying

This movie would be a great game. There is that Metro 2033 feeling. With all the hopelessness and depression.

The moment I say those peoples reactions it started crying. The first time any of those people heard a baby cry in 18 years. It is incredible.
Idk how to put it into words. This scene literally makes my heart heart. In a world of death and despair, is a new life, hearing the baby cry just immediately shot out love as if it changed the frequency of the atmosphere. Just amazing.
It's something to cry about. A baby's cry is stressful. Hateful. But when they are silent it is a horrible moment.

All throughout this scene you're watching countless lives lost, yet every person stands still at the sight of the newborn. The newborn promises hope. Future. Untainted by the ugliness those around her have grown to accept as reality. Stunning scene.
I have watched this film a lot of times since it first came out and that ending scene with baby still brings me to tears , an innocent babies cry really tugs at the heart . such a powerful film and needs to be shown more .
You just don't get movies like this nowadays. Absolutely amazing.
Word
This scene is so beautiful. Not only it made me tear up when I first watched the movie but I got chills. And also the baby is like the depiction of Jesus with the people around them just makes this scene so good
This was literally the hardest I’ve ever cried watching something. Thank god I was alone
I’d say this is easily one of the best scenes in cinema of all time, easily top 10.
Very hard not not to shed a tear watching it.
My god the chills i got when i saw this movie in theaters... it was completely silent in there. Everybody was just absorbed in the film. A beautiful scene from one of the best movies created in the 21st century
Imagine the thought of killing your fellow man knowing that there’d be nobody left to replace him/her down the line. Every life you take would just be furthering human extinction.
The day when humanity find hope again.
i had never realized Clive Owen wears a 2012 London Olympics sweatshirt, genius detail
This is hands down one of the greatest scenes of any movie imho. Something so young, fragile, pure and innocent born into an old, violent and unforgiving world.
