    Fun fact about Hyperion - its rotation around the axis is chaotic and unpredictable except in the short-term due to gravitational influence from Titan. This is pretty rare for a moon, in addition it is a rare example of a moon not being tidally locked (except the very small and distant ones).

    • @woodsplitter3274
      @woodsplitter3274 Месяц назад +1

      Its appearance is unusual. It looks like sponge. Is this due to its low density?

    • @PlanetGuy901
      @PlanetGuy901 Месяц назад +2

      And Hyperion isn’t the only moon that does this. Pluto’s circumbinary moons also have chaotic rotations, so they are not tidally locked to Pluto, because Charon’s gravity prevents that

    The fact Saturn has so many moons, makes me think that chances of a habitable earth-like moon around a gas giant are perhaps not unlikely but chances are very small. After all, the mass around Saturn did not coalescent into a single bigger body but dozens smaller. Besides such planet being tidaly locked, the radiation from gas giant would also be a problem.

    What determines the definition of a moon? Bearing similarity to that of a planet, if simply orbiting a planet classifies it as a moon, one could consider every little ring particle could be a moon. Thus, Saturn would have billions of moons.

    • @OrbGamer1692
      @OrbGamer1692 Месяц назад

      Probably not, as the gravitational pull from the moon would be too weak to support any other bodies around it, and it would most likely get knocked out of orbit anyways from the planets gravity and either will be ejected from the planetary system or will go into a regular orbit around the planet

      It's very likely not. It has an orbit that goes around the equator of Saturn, its orbit is prograde and it is sandwiched between regular moons. Those three characteristics together strongly point towards Hyperion forming from Saturn's disk in the distant past, meaning it is very likely a regular moon.
