What makes VoicePlay #1 on my playlist is their arrangements, the sheer surprise of their unending vocal creativity, and the humor. I never get tired of them. For me, the others are predictable. I know what note is coming next. With VoicePlay, I never do.
It's never to late to go back to any VoicePlay you've missed out before. After Tommys version of Ghostriders, check out the version from Geoff Castellucci.
This was their first video (actually the only one so far) to have all four VoicePlay baritones in the video. Layne was their first baritone, before they were even known as VoicePlay. When their beatboxer (Scott Porter) left to pursue his acting career Layne took over beatboxing and Tony Wakim became their baritone. He was the walk on character here, but he was on set as he often is to help with the direction. When Tony decided he wanted to just work on the production end of things (and he hated touring), J None was brought in as baritone. He left a couple years ago to join the US Navy and sing with their premier chorus, The Sea Chanters, Cesar came on as their new permanent baritone. But J still comes back as featured. So you can talk about all the bass, but the real story here was the four baritones!
Layne (the beat boxer) was the baritone of group before they were Voiceplay, when they were called 4 to 5. When Scott Porter (the first beat boxer) left Layne took over his spot. Scott left to pursue a career in acting. Layne and Geoff are the only 2 original members going back to when they were in school and a barbershop quartet called 4 the love.
Thanks for another VoicePlay reaction. They never disappoint. Someone not in the group submitted this VoicePlay song for consideration for a 2025 Grammy nomination for Layne's arrangement. Another of their songs, "The Way You Make Me Feel," was submitted by a frequent collaborator for consideration in two categories. We'll find out on Nov. 8th if that happens.
"Hellfire" and "The way you make me feel" are in consideration for a Grammy nomination this year 🎉 We will see if they get nominated on November 8th 😊 Layne arranged this one and convinced Geoff to do it (he didn't want to do it for a long time, because Frollo is such a complete evil Disney character) 😢 And they made an amazing job 👏🏻 If you want to hear more of Layne singing, I would suggest their cover of "The heart of life" ❤
Up until a few years ago Layne Stein, his wife and 3 of his daughters would sing to his youngest daughter every year for her birthday. Mostly Layne. The videos are all on his channel. "Layne singing to Doris" 1-?
I can remember hearing this back in the 80s and singing a few parts of it as it played. But I never really understood the lyrics until VoicePlay covered it. It’s such a different version, so much more contemplative than the more pop version. Another one of their under-rated pieces. And I love Layne’s voice in this one probably more than any other that I’ve heard him sing in.
Speaking of ‘how did they make that sound?’ I’m amazed that Layne managed castanets in this. I shouldn’t be. He has done other sounds that are really more amazing. But those castanets are so very apt for a song about a Roma dancer.

Great arrangement by Layne and perfect execution... Geoff doing the most evil of Disney villains justice!
🌹🕊
Even when he refused to do it first and Layne had to make it his project 😂. But I agree Geoff has the perfect voice for a villain.

I think my favorite is Don’t You Want To Be Evil Like Me with the whole family involved.

Agree 😁
I think you will hear Layne singing the most in True Colours. It was done several years ago and is gorgeous. No beatboxing at all.
