Maria Lorea, here is a link to the script for this video. There is an updated pre-trip video preformed on a Thomas bus. You can find it on my youtube channel. :)
I watched, studied & rehearsed over and over your pretrial demonstration! I just PASSED my CDL and wanted to say THANK YOU! I studied all of this on my own (no school) and the examiner said I did very well with having had no formal training... THANKS "not broken, no cracks, or missing parts"!!!! #5 Bus Driver!!! 2016!
+Susanne Coppola Susanne, that is fantastic news! 🎉👏🏻 Way to go! Thank you so much for sharing your successful test outcome with me! You have much to be proud of accomplishing that on your own! Continued success in all you do!
Therese: I passed my pre-trip, skills, and driving test this morning. Your video helped tremendously so for that reason alone I'd like to say THANKS. Greetings from Fort Lauderdale/Miami! To all new trainees studying for their pre-trip I highly recommend this video. Good luck.
+Victor Thomas That's fantastic news! 🎉👏🏻 Congratulations, Victor! Thank you so much for sharing your success with me. Your comment and successful outcome really made my day! Best wishes and continued success in all you do. Therese
I PASSED MY CDL test!!! I did fail the parallel which eventually passed it BUT I passed my pre inspection with flying colors! Thank you so much Therese for sharing this video!!! I can't thank you enough!
+Paty Pocketz OUTSTANDING!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Congratulations, Pati! Thank you so much for sharing your successful outcome with me! Now the real fun begins. Enjoy the journey and continued success in all you do. 😀
well I watched the heck out of your video for about a month...took my test 2 days ago at the dmv...and passed with flying colors....thank you thank you thank you. ..awesome job you did in making this video blessings upon you
to everybody watching this video believe u me this video is on target I watched it over a 100 times and guess what I passed the only thing in maspeth queens ny u don't pop the hood and don't go under the bus that's it and I passed in flying colors god bless this women for her knowledge and teaching
Hands down this is the best review video I've seen on RUclips for pre-trip. I wish I would have watched it before my previous test because I forgot to turn the engine off before doing the remainder of the brake test.
This is the best class B CDL school bus pre-trip demonstration I have ever seen on RUclips so far. By far the most helpful for what a newly bus driver needs to know. Thank you so much.
I just wanted to let you know this video helped me pass my CDL test. I tell all our new School Bus Drivers to be about this video and they all have said it helped so much. Thank you so much for posting this. I've told my trainers about it as well.
Outstanding news, Dana! Congratulations! Thank you for your comment and kind, both are greatly appreciated. Continued success to you and your drivers. If you don’t mind sharing, where are you located?
I've watched many pre trip school bus videos and this is by far the most thorough, best, and clearly explained... you did a great job and i refer back to this one always ..I highly recommend everyone to just follow this video
A link to the transcript is highlighted in Blue in the comment section. There is an English transcript and a Spanish transcript. Click on the link to open the file. Thank you, Therese :)
Hector, that is fantastic news! Congratulations and thank you for sharing your positive test results with me! Continued success, blessings and happiness. :)
Just like everyone else in the comment section this video helped me pass. And if anyone reading this is looking for help for the pre trip, This video is all you need. Thank you Therese, I would not have passed without your video.
Well I'm about to go for my test. As long as nothing is cracked, damaged, no loose, or missing parts I think I'll be OK. Plan to watch this about 50 more times. Thank you!! 😁
Hi Therese, Thanks a ton for sharing this video. Very useful and informative. You drove away those butterflies in my stomach. Learn to say, It's not cracked, damaged or broken, there are no loose or missing parts,(and it's not leaking...to anything that can leak). Thanks for all the vital tips.
Under the hood, the steering rod is connected to a power steering pump which is gear driven. I think you pointed and said that's the gear box. Is it one and the same?
The gearbox or steering box, is not the same as the power steering pump. If you look on the video when I am talking about the power steering reservoir, which has a dip stick that you would check just like the oil dipstick, you would follow those hoses down which will lead to the power steering pump. The gearbox/steering box, has the pitman arm and drag link attached to it...the steering linkage. I hope that makes sense.
Very quality video! Enjoyed it very much as, I want to be a bus driver very bad! That is what I want to be In life very very badly!!!!! I just seemed to notice that you have to make sure nothing cracked, damaged, or broken any lose or missing parts. Thank you very much!!!
Who ever uploaded this video, THANK YOU....I am in the process of obtaining my CDL for a school bus and I was having problems with the pre-trip but now that I can pause a video and replay stuff (whereas in real life you obviously can't) I can take notes so I can remember all the external stuff on the bus. Thanks again :)
The brake portion of the CDL exam is crucial. When done improperly, will result in an automatic failure. Your service brake and parking brake will be tested with the engine running, but, for the remaining tests, the bus will be turned off, though your key will be set back to the accessory mode so your gauges are functioning. Be sure your air pressure gauges read above 100 psi before you begin testing for air tank leaks, emergency light, sound, and spring brake functions.
Once you pass the pre-trip inspection, you will move on to maneuverability, where they will test how well you can maneuver the bus. In Ohio, our students must do a straight line backing maneuver, an offset parking maneuver, and then either a parallel parking maneuver or an alley dock maneuver. Some states may have you do a reverse serpentine, and others may have you do a drivers side parallel parking as well as blind side. Once you complete the maneuverability, you will do your road test. The examiner will take you on a road test to see how you handle the vehicle on the road. There are a number of automatic failures that can happen on the road, such as hitting a curb, driving with your door open, 11 miles over or under the speed limit, 6 miles over in a school zone, running a red light...which actually means running a yellow too. If you have a manual transmission bus, stalling will also end the exam immediately. Best wishes for a successful test outcome.
Just came back to say that I passed my class B cdl road test. This video helped me breeze through the pre-trip and I highly recommend it to anyone that's having problems remembering all the things that you have to check to get through this portion of the test. Thanks Therese!!!!!!!
Please note, some test sites or other states may require you to use wheel chocks while testing your air tank safety features. Check with your local testing facility, to see if wheel chocks are necessary. If so, test the parking brake and service brake as shown then, if necessary, place the wheel chocks at that time and continue the brake portion of the test. Make certain you have at least 100 PSI to start the air tank safety feature portion. If you must chock your wheels, remember to take your keys with you.
Therese Mileti could you email me a script also to Blessedsummer1989@gmail.com in cdl training this is the video they recommended we watch said you did everything perfect! 👌
I just saw your request for a copy of the script. I'm so sorry I missed your message. I can still forward a copy of the script of you would like. Again, my apologies. Your request was attached to another comment.
Thank you for the script! After watching this video daily and reading the script I passed the pre trip.. Didn’t finish the outside inspection as she said I had enough points so we moved on to the driving skills portion
Very good demonstration of the pre-trip. You would make a very good trainer for the bus company here. Your video has really helped me to study for my cdl test. I didn't know about some things, for example airbags under the bus. And how to check the strobe light on top. Very informational. P.s. nice bus.
jessica teal Thank you, for your kind words, Jessica. I actually am a trainer in the district I drive for. I'm very pleased this video has been of some help to you. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance with obtaining your CDL. The Internationals are nice busses. I prefer them, even over the newer Thomas busses that we have. Best of luck to you, Jessica. Driving school bus is and has been the most fun and rewarding job I've ever had. Enjoy the journey!
+Jaconda Kearse I'm so glad you're finding the video helpful. Best wishes for a successful outcome tomorrow, Joconda! If you think of it, let me know how things go for you. All the best, Therese 😊
+Therese Mileti Thanks to this DETAILED pre-trip inspection, I was able to sound like the mechanic they want us to ;) haha!....Im so grateful for this video!!
+Jaconda Kearse Woohoo!!! Outstanding, Jaconda! Thank you so much for sharing your successful outcome with me! Continued success in all you do! Congratulations! Therese😃
I Would also appreciate your transcript if possible our Parish would benefit from such a wonderfully demonstrated pre trip ! roxanne.samplesbrown@yahoo.com
Everyone's opinion matters...It's likely that some states have a different set of criteria and they may be looking for different information. To each his/her own. It's all good. :)
Thank you for your comment and question. The seatbelt must be worn for the driving portion, or, on road portion of the state exam, and if it is not worn, for that portion of the exam, the result would become an automatic failure. When the video was produced, however, wearing your seatbelt while conducting the pre-trip portion of your examination, while on a private and, controlled environment, aka...a parking lot, was not a requirement. Using the best practice policy, I would advise all current CDL driving students to use their seatbelt regardless of location.
Marilyn, try not to get discouraged. The pretrip can seem quite overwhelming initially. A large portion of the pre-trip, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. Once you learn those key phrases, you have half of the pre-trip. Try grouping the components together...like, keep all of the suspension parts together, (front and rear spring mounts, torque leaf and spring leaf, U-bolts, and shock absorbers) Brake components together, and the wheel parts together. That way, you are not jumping back and forth between them and missing parts. If you look in the comment section, there is a link to a written script, that goes very well with the video. It is not word for word, but it is close and groups the parts. If you cannot locate the file or cannot read the file, let me know I can forward a copy to your e-mail address. You can do this! :)
Thank you for your terrific video!!! I passed my pre-trip, basic maneuvers and road test on my first try - after learning from many youtube videos. Yours was very helpful for the pre-trip!!! I never took a class and only had access to my vehicle one time for driving practice. I don't recommend doing it that way - it's very stressful :)
+Deb Harkcom Congratulations, Deb! Not an easy thing to do on your own, making your outcome even more impressive! Thanks so much for sharing your awesome news with me! Enjoy the journey and continued success in all you do! 😊
+mardoche bastien Try not to feel intimidated, Mardoche. You'll find that so much of this process, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. So, if you add the phrase, It's not cracked, damaged or broken, there are no loose or missing parts,(and it's not leaking...to anything that can leak), you have half the monologue right there. Then, once you learn the front of the bus, all you'll be doing is repeating what you learned up front and applying it to the rear of the bus. (with regards to the brakes, suspension, and wheels) Having a pattern and sticking to that pattern, will also help in keeping you from missing or skipping components. Apply the same pattern theory to the inside of the bus, as well. If I can assist you through any other part of the CDL process, let me know. I'd be happy to help, if I can. You can do this!
+Therese Mileti so id say its not cracked damaged or broken, there are no missing parts and its not leaking?hopefully eventually i can learn all those parts at some point..im from mass is the cdl test the same for all states ?
+mardoche bastien Mardoche, I do not know the exact requirements needed for the state of MA. It is my understanding that many of the states require similar elements for the pre-trip portion of the road test. Have you all ready obtained your CDL class B permit? If you have not, you will need to take a series of written exams before you can do any on board training. Once you have completed the written exams, you can move on to On board instruction. I can send you a written script that can be used in conjunction with the video to help you learn what is necessary for the pre-trip portion of the CDL practical exam. School districts that have, *board owned vehicles* will usually have an OBI(On Board Instructor) and will provide all the necassary training if you are hired for that school district. If you leave your e-mail address, I will send you a copy of the pre-trip script .
+mardoche bastien You have the perfect opportunity to memorize the pre-trep monologue and be ready to go when you've had your license the necessary length of time. Best of luck to you, on your journey to becoming a school bus driver! :)
Therese....I DID IT!!!! I PASSED MY CDL driving test thanks 100% to you!!!!!!!!!! I also nailed my parallel parking! Your video's were EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart
Courtney, that is such wonderful news! You did all the work and your efforts paid off! Way to go! Now the real fun begins! Congratulations and continued success in all you do! Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! 🎉
Wow, Leland, this is fantastic news! Congratulations to you! When you believe it, you can achieve it! Now, go out and get your dream job. Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Continued success in all you do.
without watching every second, i'd say this is identical to our pre-trip in west carrollton. i don't know if you know vicki, our trainer, but the 'cracked, damaged, or broken with no loose or missing parts' line i hear in my sleep. that's what the state tester just wants to hear, i reckon. anyone looking to drive a bus, you'll know how to drive a bus long before you get all this stuff memorized. on the surface it doesn't look all that difficult, but when you've paid to take the test and doing all this outside in 35 degree weather with a state tester holding a stop watch and clipboard, things get real, lol.
Thank You Therese. My Goal is drive school bus, gain experience, then apply for Driving Positions as a Limousine Driver and Motor Coach Driver with same Company who has multiple divisions. May I extend the same well wishes to you as well. Stay safe out there! God Bless.
Wow! Such detail and organization; I'm sure that memorizing and practicing this will help me tremendously. Thank you so much for sharing this. I am anxiously awaiting the start of the next training class for drivers
Ron, I hear what you're saying, Ron. You do a pre-trip every day, and you are checking these things, but you are not verbalizing any of it, so it goes much faster. This version is good for your initial state pre-trip exam and subsequent recertification every six years. I think you get comment of the year, Ron... ;)
Therese Mileti I truly do appreciate this video it's the best I found that's not for Class A. I know watching this will have me at ease during my exam. Thank you
That’s right. In my district we checked emergency doors for opening and closing. Half the busses, the buzzers didn’t work. We’d check tires, lights and mirrors. That’s it.
Caleb, that's fantastic news, thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! You put the effort in, and your hard work paid off! Congratulations! Now the real fun begins. Continued success in all you do! T
I'm really thrilled to share with you, the new release of my very first book, School Bus Sass. It is available on Amazon in paperback or kindle e-books. Take a look at the lighter, more humorous side of driving, and some of the more entertaining encounters I have had with my "kids" over the years. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=school+bus+sass
OMGGGGG ESTE VÍDEO ESTÁ PERFECTO PASARÉ MI TEST ME GUSTARÍA SABER TODO EN ESPAÑOL AUXILIOOOOOO PLEASEEEEE ESTOY MIRANDO ESTE VÍDEO ESTÁ EXCELENTE GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR TODO CRUZARÉ LOS DEDOS LAS MANOS Y LOS PIES PARA PODER PASARLA GRACIAS
Lily, Here is a link to a Spanish transcript. Please let me know if you can open the file and read the contents. files.acrobat.com/a/preview/7560b84a-373b-43db-8bea-eeef10226bf1 Espanol ^^
I did this whole pretrip excluding under the bus for the first time yesterday! I did pretty good too. Now I have to learn under the bus and fine tune my whole pretrip and I’ll be set!!! I’ve watched this same video everyday since I’ve had my permit
I parallel parked and did offset on both sides for the first time today and got everything on my second try! Tomorrow I’m learning the “Under the Bus” portion of the pretrip and I’ll have the whole bus down
Thanks for posting the link to the PDF. That will be very helpful as well. I just earned my CDL-B Learner's Permit with the passenger and school bus endorsements (air brake test also but it's not listed as an endorsement in MD) yesterday and now I can practice in a school bus. That pre-trip inspection will probably be the most difficult part but I intend to study it until I can do it without forgetting anything.
So good to know you found the link to the script! I’m glad the video has been helpful for you too. Please check with your local BMV to see what their specific requirements are. They can vary state to state. Best wishes for a successful test outcome!
Therese, I will be taking the CDL test soon here in VA. Are the pre trip inspections the same as the one you presented here? How can I get a transcript of this?
im gunna have to keep watching this because my hands on training is coming up this week, its a Canadian thanksgiving now so its a holiday , good opportunity to learn, thanks for this videos mam..
Hi Tony... Thank you for your comment and kind feedback. If you’re interested, there is an updated version on the pretrip that I released a few weeks ago. Best wishes for a successful test outcome! Therese :)
Yes this is a great video and even though I knew this video word by word I still failed my Cdl exam for the simple fact that DMV told me that when I read all of the gages I wasn’t supposed to mention any numbers when I was making sure that they were functioning properly. So my advice to anyone taking their Road test. Please make sure that you obtain a Commercial Driver License Manual from your local DMV and review the Pre Trip section that way you can be prepared to preform your pre trip inspection the way that your DMV requires you to. By the way I’m from New Jersey.
Thank you for your feedback! It’s good to know what other locations requirements are. Ohio requires approximate gauge readings. Success will be yours next time around.
Thanks so much for this video. I’ve been driving a band’s tour bus (2017 Prevost 45’ X3 Star Motor Coach....a 2 million dollar bus) for the past year but I needed to get my “P” endorsement in order to drive charter busses as well. On a tour bus, everything is hidden. I’ve got a Class A CDL but i haven’t done a proper pre-trip since 2009 and never on a school bus. Thanks for saving my ass. You Rock!!!
Your welcome. If you would like a copy of the writtne scipt, please leave me an e-mail address, and I will forward one to you. The two forms of media work well together when trying to learn the pre-trip. Particularly whne you are doing this on your own. Best wishes for a successful test outcome. :)
Excellent demonstration Therese. I am sharing this video with one of my co-workers who is also preparing to take the pre-trip & road test for out campus. Thanks for putting this insightful video tutorial together & sharing it. Blessings!!!
Hi Therese, thank you so much for your video. I watched it quite frequently and went to take my CDL test today and the tester said I gave him one of the best pre-trips he's ever had at a test in his 8 years. I'm from PA. Your video definitely helped me a lot. Unfortunately, I have to redo some skills (parallel parking goofed me up) in two weeks. Hoping to pass that the second time around. I also purchased several copies of your book for me and few other drivers. I'm looking forward to reading it. Thanks again!
Your note really made my day! I am thrilled you did so well on your pre-trip! I may be able to assist you with a few tips on getting through parallel parking. Let me know if you are intersted. Lastly, I really hope the book makes you and your driver friends smile! Love the kids and my job. Enjoy the journey! :) Therese
Tyler, I am working on creating a parallel parking video. This is the script that I'm thinking about using. If you would be so kind to let me know your thoughts...and, if the tips help. I would be very grateful for your input! Thank you! Therese :) You will start the parallel parking maneuver completely forward of the parallel parking box. With your seatbelt and hazard lights on, place your bus in reverse and release the parking brake. Slowly go straight back until the rear dual of your bus, is visually aligned with the front left cone of the parallel parking space, making sure the wheel is sitting no more than 18 inches away from the cone, then stop. As you are stopped, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right before you start backing again. Hold the steering wheel tight, in that position, while backing. Look in the lower left side mirror, back up until you see the three rear cones of the parking space in that lower left side mirror. Go slow! Once you see the third cone come into view, stop immediately! As you are stopped, turn the steering wheel to the left until your wheels are completely straight. Once your wheels are straight, continue backing until you see the front left cone just disappear from view of service door window, and stop. As you are stopped, turn your wheel all the way to the left. Hold that position as you begin backing again, until you can see that your front and rear bumpers of the bus are completely to the right of the outer left cones, then stop. As you are stopped, straighten your wheels, pull your parking brake, put the gear shift into neutral, get up out of your seat and take a look at your final position. Ensure that your vehicle is completely inside the box and that no part of your vehicle is to the left of the parking space. Get back on your bus and honk your horn. That will indicate to the examiner that you are ready to have them judge your final position for that maneuver.
Therese, I love this! Those tips are super helpful. Looking forward to your video! Will this also work if I would change the directions for the bus to park the opposite way?
If you are driver side parallel parking, turn the wheel in the opposite direction of what is stated above. The pivot points will all be very similar. I forgot to mention, when you as you are backing with your wheel turned to the right, you only want to see the three cones...no space after the third cone...hope that makes sense.
A link to the pre-trip script is pinned and highlighted in blue . Please click on the link to access the file. There is an English transcript link and a Spanish transcript link. The Spanish link is highlighted above in the section above just below the words, published on Oct. 8 2014. The first highlighted blue http: file is in Spanish, if you hit, show more, you will see a second link to the English transcript. They are also among the comments. The English link is pinned and ends in fc50.
They also make you check the air tank refill rate. You must begin counting when the gauge reaches 80 psi while upping the rpms, and stop counting when it reaches 100 psi. That should take no longer than 45 seconds. Also the park break activating itself it’s testing the spring break...not necessarily the park break. They actually made me state that I was testing the spring break and not the air break. Fantastic review though! They just made me specify both of those points.
Hi Arlise, Thank you for your comment and kind feedback! If a transcript would help, I would be happy to forward one to you. Just leave an e-mail address, if you like. Therese😊
I read that the correct tire pressure for a bus or coach was defined, by such vehicle mfgr, as that pressure being able to carry the maximum weight the vehicle was designed to carry, plus the vehicle itself, and not to use the maximum cold pressure on the tire.
this amazing woman knows what she's talking about i didnt use this for my test but i was trained by 4 different trainers and they all sounded like her almost identical lol
Someone asked for a copy of the pre-treip script. A link is posted in Blue below. Please note, an updated version of the pre-trip has been put in video form and uses the most current accepted terms with additional items that may be needed and some no longer needed. Please check with your local test facility to find out what your local test requirements are.
Hi Cris, Thank you for your comment and kind feedback. Just thought I would let you know I have a 2019 pretrip demonstration, and a two part pretrip training video, as well as a host of skills and safety videos. Thanks for watching 😀
I appreciate your video very much. It really helps me study my lists and better understand all the parts and components. I will share this with my fellow classmates!
Best video by far and I've watched the ALL. I really appreciate that you took the time to put it together and your makes listening to you a pleasure. I see everyone asking for a script so It must be very helpful. If it's not too much trouble I would like a copy also. My test is in 2 weeks and I need all the help I can get. Thanks in advance. Also I wish commenters would come back and give the results of their test.
+Craig Mckenzie Hi Craig, thank you for comment and kind feedback. I'm glad the video has been helpful for you. Please leave me an email address, and I will forward a script to you.
+Laurie Hamar Congratulations, Laurie! Way to go! Thank you for sharing your successful test outcome with me! Enjoy the journey, Laurie Continued success in all you do, Therese :)
Therese Mileti, First hand, I want to thank you for sharing this AWESOME PRE-TRIP demonstration on RUclips. It is intended for the CDL testing and it is by far the best I have seen. Hi, my name is Luis, I am state certified school bus instructor here in California. We get tested by CHP-California Highway Patrol. Our drive test includes a pre-trip inspection, skill test, defensive driving, turning point comprehension, student escort. And with that said, I did get some great ideas from your video. A huge thank you. I also have a channel here on RUclips, you are welcome to comment. Share ideas. GOD BLESS
Luis, your lofty praise really made my day. Thank you! I'm very glad the video was thought provoking for you! I would be delighted to share ideas with you. In Ohio, the examiners here do not test us on turning point comprehension. I would like to hear more about that. Also could you share with me what student escort is? Thanks again for your comment and kind feedback! :) Therese
Therese Mimetic, great to see your reply. Our testing. Is the same in the fact that we must verbalize everything. Turning point comprehension is when making sharp, rounded, squared turns either to the left or right we must be able to explain to the testing officer what point or points we are using on the bus and the road to safely complete turns within 12 and 36 inches. That was a simple explanation,. I hope.. Now about Student Escort, this is huge in California. We escort all our pupils across the road. We must physically do a step by step procedure to activate our Amber lights, turn signal, Red lights, stop and distance from edge of curve, and so on. I can send you a copy of all this requirements in California just for your info. It is easy for us trainers, but for trainees having to do and verbalize is not. I want to say that by watching your videos I can sense that you have a lot of patience and that is needed when training individuals.
I also teach a class of 25 hours that required by the department of education. This class enables trainees and help them pass the written exams with the California highway patrol testing officer. I have some great ideas to share. God Bless.
Lastly, the Air brake test. Your frustration is detailed. But in California, CHP requires school bus drivers to split the system and explain any detection of leakage and explain the components that could have an air leak. We also get tested on passenger management, proper use of emergency exits and to repair off we must operate our buses in the correct gear even flat surfaces. If your bus has an automatic transmission, you must still be in correct gear.
Ok here in Pa. You have to were a seatbelt for test if your going to move the bus. I'm a trainer and one of my trainees didn't put his seatbelt on and failed. Like I said good video. I give your video to everyone I train and it helps them pass. Thank you.
I appreciate your comment, Ronald. I too am a trainer for the district I drive for. I’m glad the video is helpful for your students. I will be making an updated video and will add the seatbelt, simply because so many other states require it and I’d like to eliminate any confusion. Continued success to you. Therese
I enjoyed this video, have used it as a reference for inspecting my own school bus! Have all the info of what was inspected written down on a chdcklist for my own bus, nice work Mrs. Mileti!
Hello, Jacob...Thank you for your comment and feedback! Just to let you know, I have recently released three additional pretrip videos, and a host of additional bus safety, and skills training videos, if you’re interested, you can find them all on my channel. You can also find a link to the pretrip script, at the top of the comment section, if that would be helpful. Have an outstanding weekend, Jacob.😀
Hi Lori, Thank you for your comment and kind feedback, and you're welcome. I'm glad the video has been helpful for you. If you leave me your e-mail address, I can forward the written script to you. All the best in 2017! Therese
Mr, Monroe, If I have played, even a small role, in helping others in obtaining their CDL’s, I would be thrilled beyond words . So, your comment and kindness, Mr. Monroe, are appreciated more than you may realize. Thank you 😊
Well done, except I would use a pointer or stick to point out or touch component discussed. Thanks for your time to produce. Saves me time with our new learners.
Way to go, Andrew! Congratulations and thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! I will check out your channel too. Continued success in all you do. T
Cherese, I’m so glad to learn the video has been helpful for you. If you are interested, I have an updated version of the pretrip available. There is a 2019 pretrip demonstration, as well as two pretrip training videos, which I released just a few months ago. All the best to you.. :)
my CDL classes start next week monday, and i must say that under the hood process is soooooo overwhelming. i have no idea how i’m supposed to know all that as if i’m a mechanic, *sigh*. nonetheless i’ll try and memorize the script & this video until the day i have to do it. thank you, therese 💜
Sekkzc, try not feel overwhelmed. The pretrip can seem quite overwhelming initially. A large portion of the pre-trip, however, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. Repetition is key to learning the pre-trip. You've got this. :)
We can’t just use the phrase damaged. It is considered too broad of a term, so cracked is added to describe ha type of damage that could occur and since not all things crack, the words broken, lose, and missing are all examples of what might be wrong while performing a pretrip. I completely understand the redundancy of the repetitive phrasing. I believe anyone taking the pretrip exam, should be able to say the entire phrase once, and tell them it applies to all the parts and pieces you’re pointing out in it’s entirety...but until the CDL hireups ask for my opinion , I will continue teaching it this way, until they decide they want to hear the information presented in differently. The phrasing was taken directly from one of our local CDL examiners. If you prefer different buzz words, go for it.
+DAN54843 The tire pressure gauge is more accurate and is your best option. When a tire is struck with a mallet, particularly the rear duallys, the kick back will be noticeably different, almost mushy.
In minute 13:40 when you say you will check this side of the bus the same as the other . Do you actually do it in the Test the 4 tires? Or you just tell the person ? . At what time do I get to hit the tires with the wood stick , should that be at the time that I get to go in each tire ? Or should I do a special round just for it? Just wondering, sorry for my ignorance.
No, you tell the examiner that you would check the bus the same way but you will not repeat the process. You are also just telling the examiner that you would check the tire pressure with a tire gauge, you will not strike the tires.
So basically I want to make sure nothing is cracked, broken or damaged and there are no loose or missing parts? Seriously though, I heard some college kids invented a drinking game around the number of times you say that in this video. Good pretrip though
By George, I think you’ve got it. I do hope the phrases, bolted securely and not leaking, were included in the drinking game! Thanks for your comment and the laugh!
a couple quick questions do we need to actually point to the water pump because it doesn't look too clear from the video where it is? other question I'm not sure what you mean by average before the duals and red after? not sure what duals are either
Look in the area just below the serpentine belt and slightly forward. The other part of your question. I am speaking of the clearance lights and reflectors...They are, amber before the duals (rear tires) and red after the duals (rear tires) Dual...or pairs, like how the rear wheels are. Hope that helps.
+Nina McCord Hi Nina I would love to, but the district I drive for currently has no transit busses. If I can get access to one, I will. I hope that will be a possibility in the near future! I'll keep you posted.
So the question I have in mind is this one... Does a PTI for a school bus apply to a straight truck of (26,001 Lbs +) as well, or will it be a different PTI?
Hi Moe, I believe you are referring to the allowable PSI when testing the air storage tanks for leakage. The following comes directly form the, CDL Digest. If so, the answer to your question is yes...as long as you are in a single vehicle, those numbers will work. If you are in a combination vehicle, the numbers will varry slightly, as follows.... Test Air Leakage Rate (Static check) (Pre Trip Inspection) With a fully-charged air system (typically 120 psi), turn off the engine, chock the wheels, release (push in) the parking brake button (all vehicles) and trailer air supply button (for combination vehicles) and time the air pressure drop. After the initial pressure drop, the loss rate should be no more than 2 psi in one minute for single vehicles and no more than 3 psi in one minute for combination vehicles. Test Air Brake System for Leaks (Pre Trip Inspection) With parking brake, (all vehicles) and trailer air supply button (for combination vehicles) released (pushed in), apply firm pressure to the service brake pedal. Watch the air supply gauge and listen for leaks. After the initial pressure drop, the loss rate for single vehicles should be no more than 3 psi in one minute and no more than 4 psi in one minute for combination vehicles. If the air loss rate exceeds these figures, have the air system repaired before operating. I hope that is what you were referring to. Let me know if I was mistaken. All the best, Therese :)
Hi Sammy, thank you! I have an updated version of the pretrip, which contains the verbiage the examiners prefer. ruclips.net/video/AOkJqDoCzak/видео.html There are additional training videos on my channel, if you’re interested. Happy new year, Sammy
Great demonstration video. I think you forgot to mention about checking steering wheel play, should not be more than 10 degrees( approximately 2 inches movement at the rim of a 20-inch steering wheel).
Ihor Deftalinskij Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated! It is no longer a required element for us here in Ohio to mention the two inches or ten degree play in the steering wheel, so I tried to cut out what was no longer necessary for us to talk about.

Maria Lorea, here is a link to the script for this video. There is an updated pre-trip video preformed on a Thomas bus. You can find it on my youtube channel. :)
I watched, studied & rehearsed over and over your pretrial demonstration! I just PASSED my CDL and wanted to say
THANK YOU! I studied all of this on my own (no school) and the examiner said I did very well with having had no formal
training... THANKS "not broken, no cracks, or missing parts"!!!! #5 Bus Driver!!! 2016!

That's fantastic news, Ted! Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your successful test outcome with me! Continued success in all you do! :)
Hands down this is the best review video I've seen on RUclips for pre-trip. I wish I would have watched it before my previous test because I forgot to turn the engine off before doing the remainder of the brake test.
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback.
Therese
This is the best class B CDL school bus pre-trip demonstration I have ever seen on RUclips so far. By far the most helpful for what a newly bus driver needs to know. Thank you so much.
+Brandi Blackwood thank you for your kind comment, Brandie!
I'm very glad the video has been helpful for you.
All the best in 2016,
Therese
+John Barreiros
Thank you for kind comment and positive feedback, John. I'm glad the demonstration has been helpful.

Congratulations, Daniel! Way to go! Thanks so much for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Continued success to you.
T
I will watch it to study for my pre trip when I become a bus driver!
Well I'm about to go for my test. As long as nothing is cracked, damaged, no loose, or missing parts I think I'll be OK. Plan to watch this about 50 more times. Thank you!! 😁
...and nothings leaking😉
Best wishes for a successful test outcome, Sarah!
You’ve got this!
Claudees, I'm very happy to learn that the video has been helpful for you. A script has been sent. Best wishes for a positive test outcome.
Therese
Under the hood, the steering rod is connected to a power steering pump which is gear driven. I think you pointed and said that's the gear box. Is it one and the same?
The gearbox or steering box, is not the same as the power steering pump. If you look on the video when I am talking about the power steering reservoir, which has a dip stick that you would check just like the oil dipstick, you would follow those hoses down which will lead to the power steering pump.
The gearbox/steering box, has the pitman arm and drag link attached to it...the steering linkage. I hope that makes sense.
You're a star. Thanks Therese.
Glad to help...thank you for your kind comments.
Very quality video! Enjoyed it very much as, I want to be a bus driver very bad! That is what I want to be In life very very badly!!!!! I just seemed to notice that you have to make sure nothing cracked, damaged, or broken any lose or missing parts. Thank you very much!!!
Best wishes in achieving your goals, Jackson Lucas.
Please check out my newest pretrip inspection with all the current requirements.

Thx
Thank you for putting this video on here. It's a big help to my trainees
Therese Mileti I might use this to study
Thanks
Who ever uploaded this video, THANK YOU....I am in the process of obtaining my CDL for a school bus and I was having problems with the pre-trip but now that I can pause a video and replay stuff (whereas in real life you obviously can't) I can take notes so I can remember all the external stuff on the bus. Thanks again :)
Good luck getting your license. I'm glad the video has been of some help to you.
Therese Mileti pis
i take my 3rd party exam Saturday...this video is very helpful but what all will i be tested on? besides the air brakes and pre trip inspection
Theres e Mileti
Hello Dacolis,
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback! A script has been sent. Have a wonderful day! :)
Therese
Just came back to say that I passed my class B cdl road test. This video helped me breeze through the pre-trip and I highly recommend it to anyone that's having problems remembering all the things that you have to check to get through this portion of the test. Thanks Therese!!!!!!!
+Craig Mckenzie
Way to go, Craig! Congratulations and thanks so much for sharing your successful outcome with me! Continued success in all you do! :)
Could I have a copy of your written transcript please? sbyrd32566@aol.com

Therese Mileti could you email me a script also to Blessedsummer1989@gmail.com in cdl training this is the video they recommended we watch said you did everything perfect! 👌
A pre-trip script has been sent. Best wishes for a successful test outcome! :)
Congratulations, Janine! Way to go! Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Continued success in all you do.
Therese
Enjoy the journey!
jessica teal call it a per safety walk around

South Georgia here! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone! I passed the test yesterday after watching your video on repeat for weeks.
Way to go, John, your hard work really paid off! Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Now the real fun begins!🚌

Woohoo!!! Outstanding, Jaconda! Thank you so much for sharing your successful outcome with me!
Continued success in all you do! Congratulations!

As a CDL Examiner I would have to say that you passed with flying colors, we almost use the exact same wording. *BRAVO*
+Roxanne Samples-Brown
Tank you, Roxanne! I really appreciate your feedback, and coming from an examiner...well, let's just say...you made my day.
I Would also appreciate your transcript if possible our Parish would benefit from such a wonderfully demonstrated pre trip !
roxanne.samplesbrown@yahoo.com
+Roxanne Samples-Brown
It should be on its way. 😊
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down?
Everyone's opinion matters...It's likely that some states have a different set of criteria and they may be looking for different information. To each his/her own. It's all good. :)
bots that are programmed to do that. i don't know why, but it's a thing.
Thank you so much!!!! I passed! May God Bless you beyond your belief!
Rolanda, that is fantastic news! Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Way to go!!!!!
Continued success in all you do! :)
What happen to putting on your seat belt??
Thank you for your comment and question. The seatbelt must be worn for the driving portion, or, on road portion of the state exam, and if it is not worn, for that portion of the exam, the result would become an automatic failure. When the video was produced, however, wearing your seatbelt while conducting the pre-trip portion of your examination, while on a private and, controlled environment, aka...a parking lot, was not a requirement. Using the best practice policy, I would advise all current CDL driving students to use their seatbelt regardless of location.
I was thinking the same thing
I'm currently in school to get my class B CDL. This has helped me so much with my pre trip. Thanks soooo much!!
So happy to learn the video has been helpful for you! Best wishes for a successful test outcome!
Do you have any tips to remember all rhe steps of pre trip 😕 I feel so discouraged.
+Deb Harkcom
Congratulations, Deb! Not an easy thing to do on your own, making your outcome even more impressive!
Thanks so much for sharing your awesome news with me!
Enjoy the journey and continued success in all you do! 😊
i wanna be a bus driver so bad lol but the under the hood part scares me..kudos to everyone who can remember all the parts it seems hard to me
+mardoche bastien
Try not to feel intimidated, Mardoche.
+mardoche bastien
Mardoche, I do not know the exact requirements needed for the state of MA.
+Therese Mileti i don't have the permit sadly..i havent even had my license for two years yet sadly
+mardoche bastien
You have the perfect opportunity to memorize the pre-trep monologue and be ready to go when you've had your license the necessary length of time.

Therese Mileti. are u in ohio
without watching every second, i'd say this is identical to our pre-trip in west carrollton. i don't know if you know vicki, our trainer, but the 'cracked, damaged, or broken with no loose or missing parts' line i hear in my sleep. that's what the state tester just wants to hear, i reckon.
anyone looking to drive a bus, you'll know how to drive a bus long before you get all this stuff memorized. on the surface it doesn't look all that difficult, but when you've paid to take the test and doing all this outside in 35 degree weather with a state tester holding a stop watch and clipboard, things get real, lol.
Thank you for paying I take my test oct 11th pray for me
My test is October 11 on cape cod. I like the way you talked it thru, I needed to hear it smoothly, I was all over the place. Thanks again. Scott
Good morning, Scott
Knock it out of the park, Scott, you've got this! All the best, Therese
Yes, I passed, long test, your video really helped me, thanks again, scott from cape cod

I Passed MY CDL Exams and got my License. Now, if I can only get the hours to make it pay off!
That is fantastic news, Rene! Way to go! Congratulations and continued success in all you do!
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback, Stacy!
Best wishes for a successful test outcome! You’ve got this!
I know why we need to learn this, but nobody does this.
Ron,
I hear what you're saying, Ron.
That’s it.
Just got back from my CDL test...
Passed!
All thanks to you! Thank you so much. I watched your video about 100 times I think lol
Caleb, that's fantastic news, thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! You put the effort in, and your hard work paid off! Congratulations! Now the real fun begins. Continued success in all you do!

I'm really thrilled to share with you, the new release of my very first book, School Bus Sass. It is available on Amazon in paperback or kindle e-books. Take a look at the lighter, more humorous side of driving, and some of the more entertaining encounters I have had with my "kids" over the years.

Therese Mileti omggggggggggg thank you very muchhhhhhh yes I open the file
Thank you again ❤️❤️❤️
I did this whole pretrip excluding under the bus for the first time yesterday! I did pretty good too. Now I have to learn under the bus and fine tune my whole pretrip and I’ll be set!!! I’ve watched this same video everyday since I’ve had my permit
You’re going to do great!
I parallel parked and did offset on both sides for the first time today and got everything on my second try! Tomorrow I’m learning the “Under the Bus” portion of the pretrip and I’ll have the whole bus down
I got a cdl class A semi truck 53' trailors. this is pretty much the same procedure.
I just pass my pre- trip inspection test thanks to this video!! Thank you!!
That's fantastic news! Way to go, David! Congratulations and continued success in all you do. 🎉🙌
Therese, I will be taking the CDL test soon here in VA. Are the pre trip inspections the same as the one you presented here? How can I get a transcript of this?
The pre trips are fairly similar in most states. If you leave me an e-mail address, I will send you a script.
All the best,
Therese
A script has been sent. Best wishes for a successful test outcome.

im gunna have to keep watching this because my hands on training is coming up this week, its a Canadian thanksgiving now so its a holiday , good opportunity to learn, thanks for this videos mam..

Hi Tony...
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback.
If you’re interested, there is an updated version on the pretrip that I released a few weeks ago.
Best wishes for a successful test outcome!

@@SchoolBusSass thank you for your kind words and I will definitely look that up have a fantastic weekend
You too, Tony, thanks!
@@SchoolBusSass I PASSED ALL MY EXAMS Got my class b permit now gonn a watch your 2019 pre test..
You Rock!!!
So glad the video was helpful for you, Trey!
Continued success in all you do!

Just took my test and passed first try thank to you !!!! Your the best
This is fantastic news, Joe! Thank you for sharing your positive test outcome with me! Congratulations 🎉 and continued success in all you do!
Great video thank you for all this free information? I'm trying to get my class B license on my own so this is a blessing!
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback! Continued success to your and your co-worker!
:) Therese
Thank you so much. I would love your tips for parallel parking! -Tyler
Tyler, I am working on creating a parallel parking video. This is the script that I'm thinking about using. If you would be so kind to let me know your thoughts...and, if the tips help. I would be very grateful for your input! Thank you! Therese :)
You will start the parallel parking maneuver completely forward of the parallel parking box.

This video has been SO HELPFUL! Honestly I’ve learned so much and my test is coming up and im feeling confident!
So glad to learn the video has been helpful for you! Best wishes for a successful test outcome!
Therese
Omgosh! Best pre-trip demonstration on all of youtube! Thank you!!!
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback, Monica!
Hmm..
we have not had to do this in Ohio. Where are you located?
Thanks for sharing!
thank you so much for the script. I take my driving portion of my class next week.... super excited!
You've got this, Rolanda!
Thank you so oooohhhhh much!

Hi Arlise,
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback!
If a transcript would help, I would be happy to forward one to you. Just leave an e-mail address, if you like.
Therese😊
How do I do that??
All I need is a valid e-mail address.
If you have an e-mail address, I will send you one.
Therese :)
A script has been sent. Please let me know if you have recieved the e-mail and if you can open the file.
Therese
I read that the correct tire pressure for a bus or coach was defined, by such vehicle mfgr, as that pressure being able to carry the maximum weight the vehicle was designed to carry, plus the vehicle itself, and not to use the maximum cold pressure on the tire.
this amazing woman knows what she's talking about i didnt use this for my test but i was trained by 4 different trainers and they all sounded like her almost identical lol

Thank you for your comment and positive feedback!
Continued success in all you do! :)
Someone asked for a copy of the pre-treip script. A link is posted in Blue below. Please note, an updated version of the pre-trip has been put in video form and uses the most current accepted terms with additional items that may be needed and some no longer needed. Please check with your local test facility to find out what your local test requirements are.

Continued success in all you do, Therese :)
Therese
Thank u it helped me and I've been driving for about 2 1/2 years now THANKS 😇
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback!
Continued success to you. :)
Simply the best and easy to understand procedure..
Therese
You're better than any man. I'd rather watch you than some former cop with a macho attitude. So thank you.
Johnson Steele, you just made my day. Thank you for your comment and kind feedback!
All the best to you!
Thanks I will definitely check them out and I hope you have a great weekend as well Mrs. Mileti!
Thank you so very much for making this video. I take my test this coming Friday. Your video has been so helpful. Lori B
Hi Lori,
Thank you for your comment and kind feedback, and you're welcome. I'm glad the video has been helpful for you. If you leave me your e-mail address, I can forward the written script to you. All the best in 2017! Therese
The lady is a legend . I know about 50 people that obtained the license because of her
Mr, Monroe,
If I have played, even a small role, in helping others in obtaining their CDL’s, I would be thrilled beyond words . So, your comment and kindness, Mr. Monroe, are appreciated more than you may realize. Thank you 😊
Well done, except I would use a pointer or stick to point out or touch component discussed. Thanks for your time to produce. Saves me time with our new learners.
David L Barnes
Thank you for your feedback, David and good suggestion. I'm glad you're finding the video helpful for your new trainees.
+T.C Coleman Hello, T.C.
A script is on its way.
All the best, Therese

Therese, this is an excellent pre-trip inspection demo for aspiring school bus drivers. I hope to take my CDL skills test in the coming weeks.
Your comment made my day, Keith. Thank you.
Best wishes for a successful test outcome...you've got this! 😊
Watching this helped me out tremendously
Cherese,
I’m so glad to learn the video has been helpful for you.
Repetition is key to learning the pre-trip. You've got this. :)
files.acrobat.com/a/preview/6a76c394-d2e3-4f05-b68a-db0388b7fc50
I know it's been 4 years since you posted this comment but how did it go? Did you learn everything in the pre trip inspection?
If something is "Cracked" wouldn't it be considered therefore "Damaged" or even "Broken"?
I have received the script thank you so much and God bless u
You're welcome...best wishes!
How do you check tire pressure with a rubber mallet? You said this on both the front and back tires...
+DAN54843
The tire pressure gauge is more accurate and is your best option.
Your questions help to clarify the process. I hope my response helps.
Therese Mileti yes thank you again
Therese Mileti thank you very much beautiful that helps a lot
Glad to be able to clarify that for you. 😁
Hi Therese have you given any thought to making a video just like this one demonstrating on a transit/flat nose school bus ????
+Nina McCord
Hi Nina
I would love to, but the district I drive for currently has no transit busses. If I can get access to one, I will. I hope that will be a possibility in the near future!
I'll keep you posted.
So the question I have in mind is this one... Does a PTI for a school bus apply to a straight truck of (26,001 Lbs +) as well, or will it be a different PTI?
Hi Moe,
I believe you are referring to the allowable PSI when testing the air storage tanks for leakage. The following comes directly form the, CDL Digest. If so, the answer to your question is yes...as long as you are in a single vehicle, those numbers will work. If you are in a combination vehicle, the numbers will varry slightly, as follows....
Test Air Leakage Rate (Static check) (Pre Trip Inspection)
With a fully-charged air system (typically 120 psi), turn off the engine, chock the wheels, release (push in) the parking brake button (all vehicles) and trailer air supply
button (for combination vehicles) and time the air pressure drop. After the initial pressure drop, the loss rate should be no more than 2 psi in one minute for single
vehicles and no more than 3 psi in one minute for combination vehicles.
Test Air Brake System for Leaks (Pre Trip Inspection)
With parking brake, (all vehicles) and trailer air supply button (for combination vehicles) released (pushed in), apply firm pressure to the service brake pedal. Watch
the air supply gauge and listen for leaks. After the initial pressure drop, the loss rate for single vehicles should be no more than 3 psi in one minute and no more
than 4 psi in one minute for combination vehicles. If the air loss rate exceeds these figures, have the air system repaired before operating.
I hope that is what you were referring to. Let me know if I was mistaken.
All the best,
Therese :)
Passed 1st time! This is a great training aide. Thanks Therese ;-)
Amos, this is fantastic news! Thank you for sharing your positive test results with me! I'm so excited for you! Continued success in all you do! :)
This was a very informative video Ms. Therese.
Hi Sammy, thank you! I have an updated version of the pretrip, which contains the verbiage the examiners prefer.
ruclips.net/video/AOkJqDoCzak/видео.html
There are additional training videos on my channel, if you’re interested.
