    Dear Mr Salles,
    I understand you must get several comments like mine, but I just wanted to express how much I love and value your videos and the unrivalled effort you bring to teaching us so thoroughly, and yet so interestingly at the same time. I’m in year 11 now, and have been watching your videos since the Summer Holidays. I used to find this subject so boring until I found your channel; you give such fascinating and unique interpretations of texts, and I am finally able to understand the genius of the writers who wrote the texts, which I used to find terribly boring. I watch your videos all the time and I sincerely look forward to the Macbeth videos you said you’re going to make this year. There is only one thing I can ask to you improve upon: instead of just putting quotes on the screen, I would be grateful if you could give us some illustrations, mind maps or anything visual to help us understand what you are saying, as some of the content you cover so thoroughly can be very tricky to grasp just by listening to you talk about it. That’s the only way you could possibly improve your videos, I think; I’m aiming for an 8 or 9 in English because of your channel and how interesting and useful I find the subject now, despite also finding it really difficult.
    Thanks so much once more Mr Salles - you’re honestly too good 👍

    6:01 do you think this would be a valid interpretation as well:
    In existentialism, the second tenant states “existence precedes essence” meaning we gain our morals by living and not through nature. So Hyde has been influenced by the deceptive, dual Victorian society Stevenson lived in and is therefore an archetypical member of this. Stevenson may have created Hyde to challenge the way the individual Victorian reader perceives their own actions and morals - and make them question whether it is what they truly believe in or whether it was enforced upon them, such as religion, which Stevenson believed they need to step away from, as its harmful and prevents progression. This is demonstrated as Stevenson was an atheist, and left England to live in the pagan country Samoa, where Christian morality wasn’t practiced to the same extent as it was in Victorian England.
    also ive got another interpretation for the murder of carew but im not too sure if its worded correctly:
    However, Hyde is also presented to be atavistic and primitive. We are given the violent notion that Hyde “clubbed” Sir Danvers Carew, a man with “an old world kindness”. Stevenson sets up this opposite attraction between good and evil to suggest they must not be separated - Hyde, the evil, who was separated from Jekyll, the good, is now incomplete and “deformed” so is instinctively attracted to the first good person he comes across and projects his aggression. Stevenson therefore is saying we should move out from the idea of trying to separate good and evil, as it leads to uncalled for and unstoppable acts, something only a “primitive” and less evolved being would be doing

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  3 года назад +3

    Hi sir, could you say that Enfield was actually in his the form of the more evil side of his nature at the start of the play when he wants to kill hyde although he represses the violent side of his urges. He represents the thoughts and Hyde represents what happens once you release those urges and they turn violent.

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish in fact here's a plan for 2 essays.
      The first one Macbeth and violence:
      -Macbeth's used as a construct to warn King James to be cautious of who he trusts- ('unseeded him from the nave to chops,' 'fixed his head,' 'usurper's cursed head.')
      -Macbeth's a construct to flatter King James and his interest in the supernatural- ('All's too weak for brave Macbeth,' 'greater and lesser,' 'what's he that was not born of women.')
      -Contrastingly Macbeth Is viewed as caring and loving- ('My dearest partner in greatness,' 'I had almost forgotten the taste of fears,' 'Throw physics to the dogs!')
      obviously all these ideas would be further linked to Shakespeare's purpose and context such as how he may have actually been Catholic which is why he flatters James and thoughts of the book James wrote- 'Demonolgie' etc...
      Would these points when fully developed with language techniques and explanation be good?

    • @keiralevene4946
      @keiralevene4946 4 года назад

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish another plan for an essay on Hyde
      -Hyde is used as a construct to mock the readers taste of their love for gothic acts yet they don't question what they read- ('Bones audibly shattered,' 'body jumped upon the roadway.')
      - Societies reaction to Hyde is far worse than Hyde himself- ('like some damned Juggernaut,' 'it brought out the sweat on me like running,' 'taken a loathing to my gentlemen at first sight,' 'turned sick and white..desire to kill him.')
      -Hyde is used as a construct for repressed homosexuality furthermore linking to Stevenson's disapproval of Christian beliefs and morals- ('tasting delight from every blow,' 'blasphemies,' 'release himself/ courage.')
      Once again all these points further linked to context and good language analysis.
      Thank you if you have time to look through!

    Hi sir I wrote a paragraph about the jekyll and hyde on chapter 4.Could you please tell me how can I do better?
    In ‘The Carew Murder Case’ Stevenson makes it clear that Hyde is a terrifying figure the descriptions of both Hyde and Sir Danvers Carew. Although Carew is described in a pleasant way as an ‘aged and beautiful gentleman’ this description actually portrays Hyde as a more terrifying figure. The adjective ‘aged’ used to describe Carew, suggests he is an innocent and vulnerable character, fragile and someone who poses no threat to anyone else. Just like the ‘little girl’ from the opening chapter, Carew is also a victim of Hyde and an example of another of the most vulnerable groups of society which Hyde has no hesitation in harming. This also makes Hyde more terrifying to the Victorian reader as it implies Hyde acts outside of the laws and morals which govern Victorian gentleman and society, a threat to their way of life.
    In contrast, Stevenson’s description of Hyde as a ‘small man’ helps to further highlight how different he is. The adjective ‘small’ establishes that he is different in stature from the expected Victorian gentleman. Having finished the novel, the Victorian reader will know this makes him more terrifying as it shows he is an example of devolution and the living reminder to them of how man descended from animals, therefore making Hyde savage and uncontrollable as he proves later in the extract. This is how he is frequently described and alongside his description of someone who is ‘deformed’ and ‘hardly human’ it shows how terrifying he truly is throughout the novella.
    thank you!
