  • People with Cotard's Syndrome believe that parts of their body, organs, blood or soul are missing and that they do not exist, are dying, are dead or are immortal. Sometimes people believe the world does not exist and nothing is real. It can occur in severe depression, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, brain trauma, brain tumours or brain infection, and other medical conditions affecting the brain.

I first heard about Cotards from speculation on a famous singer called Per Ohlin (or Dead as his stage name). The symptoms expressed by him and the condition as a whole are equally fascinating and scary. Sadly he ended up taking his life too at a young age.
And a word of warning if anyone looks into this story there are photos in wide circulation of his body so stay safe.

Thank you for this, Anderson. Unfortunately, suicide attempts are common in Cotard's syndrome.

Sometimes I have this feeling. I didn't even know that it is a psychiatric symptom.

Hi Beatrix! Which feeling do you mean? That you are dead, have missing body parts? Please see your GP if necessary. Best wishes, Beth

I have bad OCD, Anxiety and Depression with lots of SSI. When I'm not doing well I do have lots of thoughts that nothing is real, I am younger. How can I combat this so it does not get worse?

My daughter has been very distressed and telling me she feels empty inside like she has no guts and is just skin without anything inside. It is causing her to lose sleep want to sleep in my room anxiety and panic. She is 10 and has talked about this before a few times when she was younger. Cotard doesn't seem to quite fit is there another disorder that I could bring to her pediatricians attention?
