Flip the components upside down and mount them the the top keyboard side of the case, 3d print some taller feet and you can cut a hole in the bottom of the case for the CPU cooler if necessary. It's a bit destructive to the case but it's not visible on the bottom. You can even design and 3d print mounting plates for the components. A PLA plate can be as thin as 0.5mm and still be pretty strong. Also, mount a tactile membrane switch under one of the keyboard keys as a power button.
Imagine seeing you here since I searched this on youtube wondering if anyone had added a modern PC to a commodore 64 because I saw your video about the Framework keyboard build.
One idea if you ever make a mk2, is to add a thunderbolt expansion card and use the floppy drive as an external GPU enclosure. That way you could fit just about any GPU and supply it with enough power and it would still be a sleeper.
It's a shame that this project has not more Views.... Go on with this kind of Videos, views(success) hopefully will come back soon!!!! GL and gereetings from Germany
Brian, this is epic! You need to complete this masterpiece as soon as possible. So exciting. Maybe use the floppy drive for a high end 3090! Possible your best video ever!👍
I started with a Commodore VIC-20 when I was stationed in Germany with the Air Force. Moved my way up to an Amiga 500. Wish I still had all of those rigs.
Flip and mount everything to the top so you can put the fan as exhaust and shoot out the bottom. Then if need be you can use risers to provide extra space out of the bottom and wouldn’t be seen
I still have my original C64 in the closet somewhere. There was actually an X86 Commodore 64 that was sold in the last decade called the Commodore 64x.
The power supply could've been mounted in a separate external enclosure like the original C64. It gives you more room in the case and keeps the computer cooler. It will be interesting to see how the fan will work out. It will be blowing or sucking the air from under the keyboard.
This is cool, you weren't kidding with your teaser on Twitter. I wonder if you can find a power switch that has a red LED that you could possibly replace the original power LED with. It it might not be 100% correct looking, but better than a whole new hole and switch. If you're not too concerned with how the bottom looks, maybe you could use a thin 5mm sheet of ABS to mount everything to. Rattle can it tan and put the standoffs in it, just drill the holes in the commodore for them to go through.
Could all the electronics fit inside the floppy drive and use the serial data leads to connect the two units together and use SATA drives and you could have kept the original keyboard in place.
Paul sent me here! I think If this build was done a bit later with the 5600G APUs from AMD it would have been even better because there is no need for an extra GPU (which I think is weaker than the iGPU on the APU) and it is also not terribly hot. But yeah cool build.
The tiny ones…….an itx based one? They exist as I have one …. The PNY XLR8 Revel Single fan edition. It’s a great lil GPU for my SSF Skyreach Mini build 🇦🇺🎉❤️🥰👍🥳🤯😎
Would stripping the internals of a Deskmini and using an AMD APU here be a better solution? obviously the graphics horse power will be significantly less on the APU , but it might be roomier ?
Love this idea, I still have my Atari 800 from 1980 that I wanted to put a modern rig inside of it! This video has inspired me to take the plunge. Thanks
Will it still fit when you add the brown keyboard PCB back? It is not going to work without that PCB. I think you should have added a plastic perimeter frame to add the clearance you need instead of cutting up the case. Why not use Velcro or more of your Gorilla tape to hold the 3 units to the bottom of the case? Have you seen the My64 case by myretrocomputer.com ?
I would mount everything upside down so it can intake air from underneath. I'd also go for external brick PSU, just because I hate tiny fans, thin ITX would make more sense in this case. myretrocomputer.com sells (sold?) a c64 itx case with an optical bay you could probably mod for a GPU if this doesn't work out I turned one of those c64 floppy drives into an external USB optical drive, for the occasional backup, though it's a bit bulky even for that
I feel like that flex power supply would be so incredibly loud that I wonder if you could somehow go with an external PSU instead. I honestly don't know how much wattage those get up to. Also is the IO shroud removable with screws at all?
The only more horrific keys I had apart from the C64 was the ZX Sinclair Spectrum's rubber keys :O .... My XT had a real M series... which is a dream keyboard up till today ... (typing on clicky blues)
Should of used a gaming laptop motherboard and cooling system. You’d have an external power brick but you would be able to retain the keyboard. You could probably get it to function with some work.
Laptop hardware would be perfect for a lot of these types of projects - the boards in them are a lot more similar to the original hardware in these, and more likely to fit.
Hi Brian :), stunning work ! I've been looking for a detailed mod like this for years now. What I don't understand is why this video does not appear in my recommended list... I discovered it via Paul's lastest probing :3
Great project to do and a terrific throwback to the 80’s growing up for me. I ended upgrading to a Amiga 1000 🥰❤️👍🎉🥳🤯 this video is definitely something I enjoy watching and great to do an entire series on! Keep up the great work Bryan and looking forward to the next part 🥰❤️🎉👍👍😎.

Ah the C64. Still got mine at my folk's place, somewhere in a closet. I think you've done yourself a disservice by putting the PSU inside the main chassis. It would have been perfect to put it inside the Floppy drive and have the power cables go into the main chassism like with a DC to DC Pico psu type setup That would allow you to mount a bigger gpu and put it facing down, so it could grab some air from underneath
Yeah I could use the drive for a bunch of things but after I started planning I realized I wanted everything in one package. So no external psu, and nothing in the disk drive housing.

Excited to see the final product.
You could use the External Floppy Drive an an eGPU and stick a more powerful graphics card...
or both the PSU and a graphics card
Putting the power supply in the floppy would mean to many large wires going between them. The eGPU could work though.
Just found your channel. I still have all my old original C64 and a case of copied floppy disk games in my garage from the 1980's.
Brian. Any update on the Commodore 64 build yet? Can you do some sort of update video? Very excited about it. 👍

aquarium silicone will hold down pretty much anything with very little thickness, it smells pretty harsh until it dries.
You can put an egpu in the disk drive using a oculink port to the PC in the commodore 64...

It might be easier but the GPU isn’t giving me any issues with spacing. It’s not the limiting factor

3d printing a band for the middle of the case to give more space, might've been good.
Could you 3D print a spacer to fit between the shell halves to make it work without cutting?
